I Want To Read Every Entry On This Site! I Just Found It Today, And It Explained The BETSUNI I’ve Been

Common Anime Words Glossary
Glossary of common anime words and their meanings in Japanese explained.

I want to read every entry on this site! I just found it today, and it explained the BETSUNI i’ve been hearing so much in video games and couldn’t figure out!!!

I expect a LOT of phrases this site goes through would help clarify confusion I’ve been having. It’s a nice site.

The Untamed / MDZS, resources link post, stuff I needed as a writer by AteanaLenn

Discovering and writing in a new fandom is difficult, but especially in one whose culture you know nothing about. I started writing a The Untamed fic the other day, and ended up spending hours looking up reference posts and blog posts, in order to try and avoid the most obvious mistakes at least.

Eventually, I ended with a lot of info, so here you go, useful stuff I found to understand this fandom.

MDZS Audio Drama Episode Guide by pumpkinpaix

An episode guide for all seasons of the MDZS Audio Drama, so if you’re searching for a specific scene/quote, it’s easier to find. A breakdown of novel chapters already exists, courtesy of the wonderful threerings, but the audio drama does slightly different things and has some really beautiful changes/scripting, so this is a supplemental guide for anyone who wants to reference the AD instead of the novel for any reason.

Obviously, spoilers for the entirety of the plot.

Stars of Chaos 杀破狼

Vol 2, Notes 7, pages 339 - 366.

Another eight notes...

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

The idiom for "too late" in Chinese is 黄花菜都凉了 "The Yellow Lilly (chrysanthemum? Yellow lily?) dish is already cold", which I had to look up.

Apparently, there was a time and place in ancient China where, when the fancy nobles would throw a banquet, they would serve 黄花菜 as the final dish. If you delayed attending so long that the 黄花菜 was already cold, then you had completely missed the banquet. You were too late.

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

牲口 is, technically, "draught animal" or "beast of burden," but I'm pretty sure what Priest means here is "those cold-blooded war beasts."

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

top: I think of it as two separate, unrelated, consecutive actions.

bottom: 铁膝飞足, iron knees flying feet, is so easy to read in Chinese. (This is the first time I've ever seen the word "poleyns.")

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

top: "young and inexperienced" in Chinese here is 初出茅庐, "first time out of the thatched cottage."

初出茅庐 is the coolest little idiom. So, in the Three Kingdoms period, there was a scholar called Zhuge Liang. Liu Bei, leader of the Shu Han, begged Zhuge Liang to become his advisor and, after three visits, Zhuge Liang agreed. This was the first time that Zhuge Liang accepted such an advisory position, and the "first time" that he left his thatched cottage (it was wartime. There was a lot of travel involved with advising a king/warlord).

Anyway, Zhuge Liang was a genius and immediately won a lot of battles through superior strategy.

next: for "dig in his heels before the capital," I feel like that could be more clearly written as "hold the capital."

next: regarding "unsalvageable situation," he's talking about his relationship with the emperor.

last: "No eggs remain when the nest overturns" is a common idiom, 覆巢之下无完卵。 We're all in it together.

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

"running to the market" 赶集 is a way to describe how things are noisy and busy and people are running back and forth (not bright and merry with people buying gifts for each other).

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

I think... the indescribable smell is the mix of gunpowder and blood...

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

If you don't know already, the Origin Myth for Where Humans Come From is that the half-snake goddess Nuwa made humans out of clay :)

Stars Of Chaos 杀破狼

I'm not sure why, but in English I thought that one of the Western soldiers was laughing; but in Chinese it's really clear that none of the soldiers are laughing.

Four more...

MDZS Vol 4 Annotations

Part 1, pages 1-49

I finally finished Book 4! It was beautiful! I loved it! But a lot of word and phrasing choices didn’t fit my personal interpretation of the MDZS world, and the final chapter of Book 4 was translated based on an earlier version of MDZS, so I have a ton of notes.

Alright. Here we go:

MDZS Vol 4 Annotations

The author is very affectionately roasting LWJ here, and simultaneously showing how LXC is an expert at reading his enigmatic little brother. The contrast between the high-register language of the brothers’ conversation vs the relatively informal narrative language is obvious in Chinese, and serves to make this short and otherwise rather somber exchange more interesting and a little bit fun.

MDZS Vol 4 Annotations

I had a hard time with contractions and slang in this book. I’m sure it’s in all the other books, too, but this time the “gonna”s and “gotta”s and “yah”s rubbed me the wrong way.

Every single character in MDZS (except Xue Yang) is highly educated and speaks with care and precision. WWX talks more colloquially than LWJ (or, rather, LWJ speaks like ancient poetry and WWX just talks), and JC tends to punctuate conversations with criticism and threats, but they all speak like they endured years of formal schooling and have hundreds of classical poems and ancient texts memorized.

So true, so true.

Be sure to read all the comments, too.

whenever people in fandom refer to lan wangji as “lan zhan” there is an instinctive part of me that reacts like “how dare you be so informal, that is ‘lan wangji’ or ‘hanguang-jun’ to you” which is, frankly, absurd

(but also. how dare you be so informal)

Zhou Shen Song Obsession of the week: 无问 No Matter.

Apparently this is a song written (lyrics) by oft-collaborator Mao Buyi for the movie 无问西东 Forever Young, starring Zhang Ziyi, Wang Leehom, and other people I should probably know but don’t. The movie looks beautiful, but it doesn’t look like it’s bursting with happiness, so…

Zhou Shen sang 无问 for Singer 2020 in one of their Quarantine Sessions (I think), against a plain white wall, wearing an oversized jacket that looked like it could slip off any moment; his hair was tousled and his eyes looked puffy and no one had touched up his eyebrows — he looked exactly like how a lover is supposed to look after a long night of sharing heartfelt feelings. He starts in a whisper that hooks into your heart like the scent of jasmine in the dark before morning, and then the song and his voice build into a spectacular dawn, then settle once more into the most intimate whisper imaginable. I can’t linguistically express how this song makes me feel, except Loved.

I hope you like it, too.

Lyrics have been translated, if you’d like to read.

MDZS Volume 4 Annotations

Part 8, pages 267 - 288

More little clarifications :)

MDZS Volume 4 Annotations

The Appendix has a “Time” section, but I always forget what each time period is called, so I wrote the times in here.

MDZS Volume 4 Annotations

下不为例 is an awesome phrase. Nearly-literally, it means “this is not setting an example for the future.” Formally speaking, I’d translate it as “Don’t take this as precedent.” Here, I felt that “Just this once” conveys the feeling of the message best.

(“There will be no next time” is what I threaten my children with when they severely mess up, which is not the case here.)

More under the cut.

MDZS Volume 4 Annotations

Please don’t refer to bone-bits as crumbs. I eat cookie crumbs with a spoon. I smoosh bread crumbs together and pop them in my mouth like little biscuits. I live off brownie crumbs for breakfast.

No bone crumbs, please.

I recently started keeping a list of all the ways I hear/read Chinese people say "death / dying". This has got to be the most artistic rendition of that question that I have seen to date :)
