Neil Josten is a really fucking phenomenal protagonist. Unreliable narrator or not, I really enjoyed his internal monologue. The reason I like his perspective so much is because we can we constantly see his internal conflict. He KNEW his father would find him, he KNEW about the Moriyamas and was terrified and he STILL CHOSE the Foxes and Andrew and Exy over it all. Even when he knew he was about to DIE, he told himself to that it was enough, because it was more than he ever thought he'd have.
I just- god, I love him so much. He's should be considered a national treasure. Anyway, happy birthday to Neil Abram Josten and thank you for coming to my TED talk.

neil’s favorite game is “i’m going to say something unhinged as fuck with no context and watch people try to figure out if i’m telling the truth or not”
andrew’s favorite game is “im going to watch neil say something unhinged as fuck and offer zero input on if it’s true or not (i know the answer) and watch everyone cycle through the stages of grief as they realize that there is literally no way of knowing without asking and they’re scared ask if neil really jumped out of a plane without a parachute once or if he’s fucking with them”
«Jeremy dove for him and grabbed his wrist. Jean’s heartbeat was like a hummingbird’s against his fingertips, and Jean shuddered so hard Jeremy felt it to his elbow.
“Jean, stop,” he tried. “Jean, you have to let go.”»
The pool scene lives rent free and I forever hate the coach for pushing him towards the water but I will forever love him being supported by Jeremy though it

Nora Sakavic put down the sarcastic British boy and picked up a rude Frenchman and made them both hit rock bottom and fall in love with a blond guy.
kevin day:
neil josten the character that you are. auburn hair and ice blue eyes and a serial killer's smile. the capacity for both extreme cruelty and immense kindness. an honest liar, a brave runaway. someone who is born of two violent, dangerous, immoral people and desperately, desperately doesn't want to be like them (but is a little bit anyway). harsh and brutal and rough around the edges and at the same time so devoted and genuine despite it all. spent his entire life outrunning his past, cutting people loose for his own survival, and was ready to die for the people he called family. never does anything half-hearted (except maybe college, but that's actually completely valid) but throws himself into it and literally puts his life on the line all for the game. bargains for jean's safety and makes an effort to keep him alive and well despite barely knowing him at all. signed his own death warrant by staying at the foxhole court because he wanted to see kevin break free of r*ko and make it to the top (where he belongs). neil josten, who could've been so much more violent and bitter and evil, but remained true and good and would've held onto his integrity and the people he loved till the day that he died. neil josten the character that you are.
