River Song's Wardrobe (Updated For “The Husbands Of River Song”!)

River Song's Wardrobe (Updated for “The Husbands of River Song”!)

image

So after my post on Martha Jones’ wardrobe got unexpectedly loved, and before I wrote about Rose’s Series 1 clothes, I thought I’d continue to put my two favorite things together (costume analysis and Doctor Who) and see what I could come up with. Because this is my specialty, yo, and it makes me happy.

So: let’s do River Song!

Now, there’s a small difficulty here. Either I can analyze River’s outfits in the order we see them, thus revealing the writer/viewer’s arc of her character’s trajectory, or we can look at them in the order River wore them from her perspective, going all in-universe and watching River’s wardrobe progression in the order it happened for her. I’ve decided to go with the second object, because then we can admire how the costume team managed to keep certain threads (oops, pun) consistent in a story that’s all out of order and out of time. And then you can go back and piece it together in order if you want! What nerds we are!

So, anyway, what’s River wearing when we first meet her? Well.

image

I’m sure it’s the height of baby-fashion, whatever it is. One nice anon pointed out that it looks like something called a Halo sleep sack, though, so there’s a thing for you. Baby fashion, guys. It’s complex.

River/Melody appears a few more times as a child, but her clothes are so little seen that I can’t really build anything solid off of them. River’s wardrobe only really starts to come into its own when she’s under the name of Mels, larking about with her parents:

image

What a lovely gif. You can’t see the outfit terribly well (because I chose this gif over closer shots, sue me), but it’s a gray tank and a black leather jacket. Not much to go on, but tank tops tend to be for active people and leather jackets always signal “tough person,” unless David Tennant is wearing one and looking like a wet adorable rat.

image

He is so smoll.

But the color palette for Mels’ clothes is already important: despite being a very colorful person, River sticks to a neutral palette most of the time, relying most heavily on beigey colors or muted earth tones, often with a shot of black to spice it up.

image

Kinda like the above outfit, actually. While we’re looking at it, note the pattern on her dress: how weird it is, kind of skeletal. It’s bold, but not an easily identifiable print like polka dots or stripes or florals. It looks like rows of spines, or barbed fencing. Something fierce and weird and not to be trusted.

image

Ah, good, now Alex Kingston is wearing it! Look at how the fit changes: that’s the River Song shape, right there, from the knee-length hem to the v-neck neckline to the drapey bodice. There’s usually a lot of draping in her dresses; I think it’s to add to the drama of it all, that appearance she has of living life on a very great stage.

In the above picture, River’s showing off her great lace-up boots, too. Here is someone who came dressed for murder. She totally looked in the mirror today and said “And that’s how an assassin looks!” to herself, while dancing to punk rock. Or to the screams of horrified civilians, as happens with her next outfit.

These people could be anywhere! Maybe even your own mother! Or work friend!

i love when people on here well be like “who DOESN’T want their blood to get sucked ? 🤨” well i hate to break it to you but the average person does not, in fact, want to have their blood get sucked. statistically there is a large amount of people who do not want this to occur. this is shocking and appalling, i know. the world is full of unsettling things

B disarms A, swinging their sword back up and preparing for the final blow. As eyes widen.

A: you wouldn't- no no no. It's me! It is me under the mask!

A lifts off their mask revealing their face as B looks at them with sad eyes.

B: I know.

Bs guard falters and A reaches out toward B

A: you? You knew? Then why have we been fighting this whole time?

Bs grip tightens back up and they press A against a wall. Sword to the throat.

A: oh-

B looks away as their calculated assassin face leaves and they start to cry.

A: oh honey- its okay.

B: I have to kill you, you know.

A: its okay! We can fake it and they will never know. We can run away, live in the woods. Wake up each morning side by side. Doesn't that sound nice?

B: ...you know that you would get bored. You would come back to this life.

A: I won't! I will do it for you!

A reaches out and cups Bs face

B: and yet we both know thats a lie.

B takes As hand and kisses it, looking sweetly down at A.

B: You were always my star. You will always be my star. I love you.

A: I love you too.

A pulls B close into a kiss, B reciprocates and they both lean into it, touch starved and frenzied. Breaking only for air.

as they both breath heavily, B readies their sword and As eyes widen as they tense up.

A: The order of-

B shakes their head and A shuts up.

B: don't let their name taint this moment, love.

A closes their eyes and exhales slowly.

A: I love you.

B puts their lips back on As. A gentle and soft kiss as B brings the sword in with a swift and practiced motion. Causing a quick and painless death.

B: I love you too my star, I love you too.

Look I love unconditional devotion love stories as much as the next person, but there's really something so deliciously raw about conditional devotion.

I have served you and I have loved you for decades, but I will not give up my principles for you. You cut out part of my heart and took it with you down that path that you insist on walking, but you walk it alone. Even when the bleeding, gaping hole you left in my chest kills me, I will not follow you.

Dad: do the dishes!

Me: *does the dishes*

Dad: why did you put this dish in the dishwasher! You know better than to be careless and put something in the dishwasher that doesnt belong in there.

Dish: I say "dishwasher safe". Of course they put me in the fucking dishwasher!

Hey remember when Tumblr banned porn and everyone fled to Twitter and the internet by and large became that much more insufferable? Yeah well, we’re about to get the sequel no one’s been waiting for

Hey Remember When Tumblr Banned Porn And Everyone Fled To Twitter And The Internet By And Large Became

A recent lawsuit is calling into question the very law that makes user-generated content possible on the internet and it’s going before a bunch of old people who have no idea how the internet works. If Section 230 gets repealed or modified, the internet as we know it will radically change forever. Content policing will be that much worse; and either the guidelines will be so restrictive it’ll squeeze the life out of their sites, or sites will close their doors all together by not being able to meet the moderation demand and not wanting to risk being liable.

Unlike SOPA way back in the day, this one is quietly flying under everyone’s radar so there’s no big pushback like last time, so there is a very real possibility this goes down in the worst way possible. So Yeah Ya’ll may want to start saving your favorite content if you feel it’s going to go bye-bye

I don’t know how else to explain it. If someone says something to me that initially hits as horribly transphobic, I’m going to be hurt. However, if, after I confront them about it, they go “Oh no! Jesus no, that’s nowhere near what I intended to say, I mean X” - well, I now feel a hell of a lot better. I like knowing people aren’t actually trying to hurt me.

So yeah - knowing someone’s intent can drastically alter the impact, especially if the impact was negative. It can literally fix a horrible case of miscommunication that could’ve resulted in a permanent rift in a friendship.

But I’ve been in communities where trying to have the second half of that conversation is “abuse” and “invalidating their pain”.

No! It’s actually a really fucking important part of communication! And to silence that second half of the interaction results in no one learning anything, no one healing, and everyone remaining hurt.

Person 1 remains offended, thinking their friend meant to say something transphobic. Person 2 remains hurt because now everyone thinks they’re transphobic.

The pain of being misinterpreted is not and should not be dismissed, and fuck anyone who tries to do so to me in the future.
