AU Fic Idea

I don’t want to be mean or step on anybody’s toes, but I feel like people have James Potter in a chokehold.

You can interpret James however you want but if people want to make him a real person than they can’t have him be perfect; I.e. never being rude or mean to people, never doing bad things with bad intentions, always having an open mind and always being accepting of things right away

Some people get really mad when ffs make James mean, or a bully, or not accepting of the people around him coming out to him(this one doesn’t happen that often but it’s fine) and it’s ok to get mad but it’s very strange to me.

For example, someone will say that James would be really hurt after all those years of Lily rejecting him and that causes self-esteem problems for him in the future.

Ok then, so he turns those problems in on himself, why can’t he turn those problems onto others like every other character? Why can’t he make fun of someone he doesn’t like for not having a girlfriend, why can’t he get mad or snippy with Lily about it when they’re dating instead of just forgiving her immediately?

When these stories do get told, people begin to say ‘he definitely wouldn’t say that! He knows how much that could hurt someone. He would never intentionally hurt someone unless it was for the greater good!’

Unless you think James Potter is God, then that is just not true. People do bad things sometimes, that’s how they learn to be better people. Just because someone has a sunny disposition doesn’t mean they can’t have bad or prejudiced thoughts. It doesn’t mean they wouldn’t take advantage of people or take out their anger on others.

Sirius, Remus, Regulus, Lily, etc. They all get to be mean, all except James Potter who is the same age as them, goes to the same school as them, and has more privilege than most of them. Why is he exempt?

If you want James to be real then you have to let him get mad, you have to let him make mistakes so that he can learn from them. You have to give him time to understand things he’s never seen or only heard bad things about. You have to let him have a full range of character and emotions.

Nobody is that perfect from the start.

If you don’t want these characters to feel real then that’s totally fine. Just don’t interfere with or critique others trying to do so.

I love James Potter as much as the next person, and I would love him even more if I got to see him grow into the man we picture him to be now.

I believe that the reason why so many people like Regulus Black is because he is a blank slate. like we barely know anything about him other than the fact that he was a seeker, Sirius’s younger brother, a death eater at age sixteen, in a good relationship with a house elf and died around the age of seventeen or eighteen. another thing is that writing him is so interesting because of his circumstances, like boy grew up in a blood supremacist household, had Sirius Black as his older brother, Walburga Black and Orion Black as parents, was friends with Kreacher. There are just so many possibilities on what kind of person he could have been. He could have been a blood purist until he realized that muggle-borns are just as good at magic as purebloods. Or he didn’t believe his parent from the start but kept quiet because someone had to keep the peace in this shit hole of a house and it sure as hell wasn’t Sirius or Walburga. he could have been a very nice boy and a goody-two-shoes who tried to please everyone. or he could have been a ruthless young man who was tired at the unfairness of the world, bitter towards his older brother who left him to rot with his crazy mother and distant father. he could have been an animagus. knew Remus was a werewolf. friends with halfbloods or even muggleborns. maybe he was bisexual or demisexual or asexual. he could have been in love with James Potter. best friends with Barty. there are just so many headcanons and possibilities with Regulus because he is a blank canvas for us waiting to be brought to life and we can project ourselves on him and mold him to our liking and hoe we see fit. and this is why I think regulus is such an interesting character even though we know so little about him.

Someone notices Regulus singing a song nonstop and when they ask him what song it is he just says he doesn’t know and walks away.

And then like a month later the song comes out on the radio and that person is just losing their shit.

Seer! Regulus but it only allows him to randomly know songs (mostly muggle) that have yet to be written. Like imagine he goes to to Lucius and Narcissa's wedding and just starts humming 'Barbie Girl' by Aqua.

Sirius pisses him off and so Regulus screams 'Who let the dogs out' at the top of his lungs.

I think Walburga liked Sirius more than Regulus. Sirius fought back. He was a leader, a protector. He was strong minded and passionate but also incredibly loyal to his friends. Walburga thought that if she could get Sirius to agree with her ideals, all of his characteristics would fall perfectly in place of Voldemort’s right hand man. He wouldn’t be just another DE, he would be in the inner circle. Walburga didn’t expect much from Regulus, so she didn’t care about him as much. Regulus was submissive and didn’t think for himself. She knew he would become a DE, so she didn’t pay attention to him. When Sirius left, Walburga was left with her spare. She was disappointed with not having a strong enough heir to be of more importance to Voldemort. Regulus was the disappointment in her eyes.

She was wrong about Regulus though. Regulus wasn’t submissive, he was strategic. He had his own opinions and ideals, he just never said them because he knew it wouldn’t get him anywhere. He knew how Sirius was treated and figured that speaking up for himself just wasn’t worth it. He became a DE because he wanted to. He felt awful about his brother hating him for it, but he agreed with the world he was told Voldemort wanted to create (I think he was manipulated into thinking Voldemort just wanted a peaceful world where everyone could be free).

When Regulus realized he’d been tricked, he didn’t want to be just another soldier on the light side like his brother, he wanted to take down Voldemort himself. (Little dramatic but love the enthusiasm) He sacrificed his life knowing that he would never get to say goodbye, never get to redeem himself in his brother’s eyes. It wasn’t expected nor welcome of him to do such a thing but he didn’t care. He did what he wanted, whether people knew it or not.

Things James would call Regulus:

Little king

Lionheart

Little star (NOT to be confused with bright star who is Sirius)

Love (Reg calls him lover)

Gumdrop (because it annoys the FUCK out of him)

Lucy (let me explain. Everyone calls him Reg so he decided to call him the end of his name instead of the beginning but ‘lus’ was weird so he said Lucy)

Broom boy (affectionate)

James calls him lots of things but these are the most used.

James even called him shawty once and Reg only spoke to him in French until he promised not to do it again.

I feel like Sirius drinks fruity cocktails while Regulus drinks wine. They both like to act like classy motherfuckers when drinking. All their friends have seen them sloshed out of their minds at some point so none of them take them too seriously.

And when they’re drunk Sirius will turn to anyone and start screaming, “I love you so much you’re so pretty, not as pretty as Moony but no one can be as pretty as Moony. He’s my boyfriend by the way, you HAVE to meet him. Where’d you get your shirt? Can I try it on? Yes right now. OH HI JAMES!!!!!”

Regulus just sits in the corner giggling the whole time. When he sees James (and/or Barty if you like) he just openly stares at them. Like, wide eyed, open mouthed, hands holding his cheeks staring.

So I’ve been thinking

Quidditch car wash fundraiser

I don’t know why they would ever need the money or why they would wash muggle technology for it. But just ignore that.

The school would never allow them to be sexy because they are c h i l d r e n, but you know James and Sirius would be constantly wiping their brows with their shirts just to show off their abs.

Remus and Peter would handle the money but then Sirius and James would convince them to participate too. (Sirius just wanted to see Remus’ muscles at work)

All the house teams would have to do it which causes a lot of problems. They would constantly be spraying water at each other, throwing rags and sponges, fighting over the music, and too many people would end up with soap in their eyes.

All the pure bloods (regulus) would be terrified of touching a muggle device that’s “sure to explode at any moment”. Regulus would end up getting put on money duty. Since he doesn’t know how muggle money works people severely under pay. He was also incredibly distracted by the show the practically shirtless James was putting on.

The minute the last car was washed James and Sirius would take off their shirts just to show off. Remus and Regulus had a cardiac arrest at that point.

It would pretty much just be a shit show and they would never raise enough money. And everyone got to watch them all waddle back into the castle soaked head to toe looking like drowned rats.

“I’ve always loved you Reggie. . . I don’t think I ever stopped.”

He didn’t say anything; just kept taking labored breaths as tears ran down his face. This was not how James wanted closure with Regulus to go.

It had been years too late. James had a beautiful wife and a kid brighter than any star you could find. What he didn’t have for most of those years was the man standing in front of him.

God, it’s hard to remember that they’re both men. Not the boys they used to run around school as. Already influenced by the war but not so close to be broken by it yet.

Regulus had moved on as well, dating Barty.

Well, not so much moved on, but rather moved forward.

“I guess you could say we were the right peo-”

“No, James, you’re wrong. And you wanna know how I know?” Regulus voice was nasally and raw.

James didn’t know how to respond.

“Because if I was so right for you, then the wrong time wouldn’t have mattered. So please, stop lying to me, and stop lying to yourself.”

James tends to forget. It’s not hard to when Sirius rarely talks about him, and when he does it’s hardly good.

Sirius is a trickster. A rebel. A Gryffindor. An untamable spirit. An amazing friend. A son to James’ parents. A lover to Remus. A soulmate to James.

Sirius is many things, but before everything; before all of this, he was a brother.
