I totally get what you’re saying. To get jegulus and jegulily, you have to change all their characters around.

I personally don’t like when people say Regulus was just forced into a role and he never wanted any of it though I do like seeing how people twist the story in that way. But it makes him sound like a mediocre Draco.

I think a lot of people like Jegulus because of the character depth it brings to both of them. We get to see a softer side to Regulus and how he’s just as scared as everyone else is. It teaches James that you can’t save everyone, especially when they don’t want or think they need to.

In canon, nothing about Jegulus and jegulily would work. But that’s what fan fiction is for. So we can change things or put our own theories about the characters into play.

Jegulus

I’ve seen a lot of discourse about Jegulus in this fandom and I want to give my opinion on it. Before I get into this I would like to say: no hate to any Jegulus shippers. You’re entitled to your own opinions, and I could care less about who you ship as long as it’s not pedophillia, incest, etc. This is just my opinion.

I really hate Jegulus for multiple reasons:

First off, it completely destroys their characters and makes 0 sense for both of them.

James was strongly against blood purity and the Potter family were labeled as blood traitors. He was invited to join the DE by Voldemort and declined (JKR confirmed this was 1 of the 3 ways he betrayed him.) Not to mention he betrayed Voldemort 2 other times. Plus, he was friends with Remus, a half-blood werewolf and Sirius, a blood traitor Gryffindor. Do you really think the Marauders would still be his friends if he suddenly dated a blood supremacist? Imagine if you’re a POC and your white friend dated a racist. Or if you were Jewish and your German friend dated a German N@z! supporter.

Regulus was strongly for blood purity, seeing as he made a shrine dedicated to Voldemort and the DE. This means he would’ve hated Muggleborns, half-bloods, half-breeds, and blood traitors.

Not to mention Sirius. Regulus probably loved Sirius since he asked Kreacher not to tell his family about the Horcrux, and Sirius died not knowing about it, but that doesn’t mean Regulus was a good brother when Sirius was still around. In his youth, Sirius would’ve hated Regulus because of Walburga and Orion’s favoritism. The Potters took Sirius in and James adopted Sirius as a brother. He would’ve hated Regulus because of the way Sirius talked about him. And considering that Sirius hated Regulus as kids, he would be very hurt and angry with James if he suddenly got in a relationship with him.

Second off, Jegulus and Jily can’t work in the same timeline. Lily would never go out with James if he dated a blood supremacist before her. If a white guy asked me to date him, and I knew he dated a white racist before me, I would be horrified and shocked and immediately say no.

And don’t even get me started on the HC about a poly relationship between Lily, James, and Regulus. I’m sorry, but that’s a very disgusting HC to have. Muggleborns are an allegory for Jewish people and DE are an allegory for N@z!s. It’s just like Dramione/Drarry, just Marauders Era edition.

The only way I can see Jegulus or a poly relationship between Regulus, James, and Lily working is in an AU where Regulus was always good, but that still changes him entirely and throws away anything canon about him.

I think a lot of people use Jegulus as a way to give Regulus a better redemption arc. But honestly, using love as a redemption arc doesn’t work and is just lazy writing. We see this with Snily and even Grindledore, to an extent. I think Regulus should’ve been given a better redemption arc but using Jegulus to do so makes no sense and isn’t a good way to fix JKR’s terrible try at a redemption without obsession.

How the marauders + reg and lily tied their shoes

James: tied them around his ankle. He also wore Velcro shoes because he thought they were more fun. (He also had rollerblades and Mary taught him to skate)

Sirius: didn’t tie them. Ever. Like a fucking psychopath. He would make a show of not doing it whenever someone told him he should tie them. He also had light up shoes and heelys. (Imagine almost getting decked in the hallways because some dumbass didn’t know how heelys work.)

Remus: tied them normally. He’s not about to lose the circulation to his foot or eat shit because he couldn’t tie his shoes properly. They’re just shoes to him (but he also definitely wrote book quotes or song lyrics on the sides)

Peter: tied them with a bow tie knot cause that’s how he learned it and just never broke the habit. He would always change the shoelace color to whatever he was feeling that day. (They were always super funky)

Regulus: had the slip on fancy shoes. Never learned how to tie laces. (Was really insecure about it). Sirius also gave him a pair of stilettos as a joke gift and Reg set them on fire.

Lily: tied them normally. Was really smug whenever pure bloods didn’t know how to. Wore a bunch of sandals and flip flops.

Tw: mentioned child abuse

In almost every fic I read, Sirius and the marauders deny Regulus ever being abused (usually in fics where Reg is emotionally abused and/or manipulated)

But I want one where Reg denies they ever did anything wrong and Sirius is always trying to convince him other wise.

Sirius tries to be gentle with him but Reg never listens. One day during an argument in the halls, Reg tells Sirius that if he just stopped fighting, their parents wouldn’t punish him.

Sirius is just so tired of hearing it that he says, « oh really? Then why do you flinch when someone moves too fast? Why do you look for an exit when you enter a room? Why do you bite your nails so often? Why can you tell who’s walking just by the sound of their footsteps? Why do you shut down minutes at a time? Just because your scars aren’t on the outside doesn’t mean they’re not there. You are just as fucked up as I am. So don’t stand there and tell me that being perfect would change anything because you are living proof that it wouldn’t. »

Regulus felt so exposed. He didn’t think anybody could see it. But with Sirius’ and his own friends looking anywhere but at the two, he understood that they all knew about both of their abuse. It’s the first time Regulus says to his brother, « I hate you. »

He walks away from the crowded hall and cries in a hidden room in the dungeons for hours. Apparently, he hadn’t fooled anybody with his act. His friends just didn’t care.

Sirius felt terrible for saying it how he did. In front if a crowd of people, in the form of an insult, and insinuating that his own scars were visible. He wanted Regulus to admit it to himself before he heard anyone else say it out loud. He took a thousand steps back in helping his brother and proper communication was nowhere in sight.

And you can’t tell me James wont give the ‘epic highs and lows of high school football’ speech to Remus’ ‘I had to sell drugs for my nana’ speech.

As a former vampire diaries (both the tv show AND the books), twilight, and shadow falls(I know no one’s heard of it, that’s fine) stanner, I can confidently say that vampires are still sexy and cool as fuck.

The only reason I believe Jegulus couldn’t be canon is because James would be buried in a shallow grave after the breakup.

Regulus is that crazy bitch that would rather kill a man than have anyone find out he got dumped. There’s no moving on if there’s no James.

You might think I’m exaggerating but if you think about how easy it would be for Regulus to get away with it you’ll see I’m right.
