Umbra is Latin for shadow so basically shadow energy. A good way to attempt to harness that energy is to get a feel for it.
-I would sit in a dark room with just enough light to see. Sit down and bring your hands together in a cupping gesture.
-In between your hands try to visualize the shadows and darkness of the room beginning to pool and form an orb between your hands.
-As the energy builds get a feel for it. Keep your empathic senses open as it will help (if you are empathic)
-Once you know what the energy feels like and how to gather it you should be able to use that energy in spells
A spell jar/sachet recipe for sweet dreams. As always none of the items listed are “required”, just personal items I put in mine.
Disclaimer: some of the associations used are personal (non-medical/scientific associations)
Lavender (for relaxation)
Rose petals and/or rose quartz (for sweetness of your dreams)
Eucalyptus (for aiding in nasal congestion through the night)
Amethyst (my personal association for sleep and dreams)
Black tourmaline (protection from nightmares)
Cat’s eye stone (personal association with Neptune)
Jar or bag
Ground yourself and unwind for the night. Turn off electronics and do what you need to get yourself in the headspace for rest.
Fill the sachet with chosen ingredients
If you choose to, ask Neptune for good dreams and protection from nightmares
Put the sachet under your pillow. If using a jar I’d put it beside the bed
Return your discarded spell ingredients to nature in the morning
I’ve had a few people ask me about how to interact with shadows and darkness. And I found myself thinking of a method I used.
Needed:
Totally dark room
Small table you can sit on the floor in front of
A black candle (any size)
You will be working with elements of fire and shadow (light and dark)
Sit in the floor and light the candle. As the flame rises pay close attention to how it moves. Focus on the movement and dance of that single flame. Let the light fill your senses.
Now out of the corner of your eye look at the interaction of the candle light against the darkness and start looking at the dance of the shadows instead of the dance of the light. Eventually raise your eyes from the candle and stare straight ahead, focusing more on the darkness and the dance of the shadow. Let that darkness start to fill you, replacing the light. You may feel your own internal darkness resonate with the darkness around you. When you do, blow out the candle.
I’m curious for people to try this and share their experiences with me.
**If you try this please message me and tell me of your experience**
Explain the basic: Energy manipulation
Disclaimer: in this chapter you are going to learn the physical and spiritual meaning of energy! Everything I will talk about is information that I got from books and sites online and even videos on YouTube. In my years of practice, I learned as much as I could out of curiosity and what works best for me. I suggest you do the same by learning as much as you can on your own (I will be here making posts teaching this kind of stuff) from multiple sources.

When it comes to energy manipulation, we have to remember the 12 laws of the universe! According to these laws, we are all connected; everyone vibrates at different rates, and energy is always changing! We can use the knowledge that those laws gave us to manipulate the energy that is around us in different aspects. Before we start to talk about what energy manipulation is, let's learn what energy is, even in a more scientific aspect.
"Energy" is often referred to as the life force or spiritual power that flows through all living things and the universe itself. People who practice witchcraft often work with this energy to bring about desired changes in their lives or the world around them. This energy is believed to be manipulable through various practices such as rituals, spells, meditation, and visualization.of course Different traditions and practitioners may have their own specific beliefs and terminology surrounding energy, but it is generally understood to be a fundamental aspect of the spiritual and metaphysical realms of witchcraft.
manipulating energy:
More often than not, we manipulate this energy, which can happen on a daily basis without our knowledge. In a more visual explanation, we are surrounded by a bubble. Bubble = spiritual energy. When we go out and do our daily things and have our daily experiences, we give some piece of bubble. Energy manipulation is understood if we are using our bubble, understood when we have to use it and use it to our own advantage. for example, "If I feel this kind of bad feeling from a person, I will use a piece of my bubble to protect myself." I used my spiritual energy to protect myself from negativity.
Energy is defined as the capacity to do work or produce heat. It exists in various forms such as kinetic energy (the energy of motion), potential energy (stored energy), thermal energy (the energy associated with temperature), chemical energy (energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds), electromagnetic energy (energy carried by light and other electromagnetic waves), and many others.
The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another. This means that the total energy within a closed system remains constant over time, even as it may change from one form to another.
Energy plays a fundamental role in all physical processes and is a central concept in fields such as physics, chemistry, and engineering. It's a crucial aspect of understanding the behavior of matter and the interactions between different systems in the universe.
Why am I talking about physical energy?
because we can use physical energy to practice witchcraft. Let me give you another visual example. We are going on a walk to feel relaxed and release some tense energy. We are using kinetic energy to protect our peace. It is all in the intention and the mindset when you use this kind of physical manipulation; even lighting a candle before a spell means using thermal energy to protect the space. (I'm saying protection as an example.) You can do pretty much anything; a walk can equal aboundance if that's what you want.
NSFW TALK AHEAD (MINOR DO NOT INTERACT)
It is a bit uncomfortable for me to talk about this, but it has to be said. Carnal acts like sex or masturbation can also be used to manipulate energy, and it is a whole practice in itself called red magic, where you use the build-up energy of the orgasm and the peak release to put your intention in the world. The tricky part is to actually concentrate on your intention until you release it.
When I first heard of Pop-Culture Paganism/Magick and Techno-Witchcraft/Paganism my first thought was, “Whut?”
It seemed strange to me and after looking into it a bit I was still quite confused over the concept.
Worshipping a fictional character as a deity? Writing spells around dialogue from a TV show? Using modern day technology as magickal tools? It all seemed a bit absurd to me.
As Pagans, we tend to lean toward a more natural path than most other religions. We tend to shun electronics in our practice (save for maybe that Spotify playlist we use for ritual) and think that those sorts of modern day amenities can interfere with our magick and energy. We look towards the Olde Gods and our ancestors during worship or ritual work and not Castiel from Supernatural or our favorite fictional character.
But then I really thought about it…and it started to make more sense to me and I realized that I actually incorporated some of these beliefs into my own practices and didn’t even realize it.
These paths, these traditions are seemingly Pagan evolution. What we now know as Paganism and witchraft is going to be vastly different from what was practices thousands, or even hundreds of years ago. Sure, we have a ton of information that has been passed down from scholars, monks, and familial lineage, but it isn’t going to be 100% accurate and that is ok.
For instance, (I am going to go a bit off track here) Wicca is one of the most common Pagan traditions you hear about nowadays, but seventy years ago it was a non-entity. It didn’t exist, but maybe a concept did in the minds of a few. Someone decided to reinvent and revive a part of the Olde Ways and give it their own twist…and the Wicca we know today is even different than the Wicca of the 50’s. Religion and practice is constantly evolving with the times and with the people that practice.
So, back to the Techno and the Pop-Culture and why I think it is a valid practice and system of magick as well as religion.
What are the Gods? Some of us may see them as real energetic beings, while others view them as just archetypes. They have attributes, correspondences, and stories to go with them, but none of us have physically encountered them, we have faith that they are there and exist on some level, but not physically, at least not anymore (if you view them that way.)
Now, Pop-Culture Paganism…I will start with a personal experience.
I am a follower of Loki, a Lokean if you will. I have loved his character and archetype since I was young and before I even discovered Paganism. He chose me (as he does) and came to me originally not as his ginger haired self, but…as Marvel’s Loki.
This seems to be something that is far more common than I realized, at least for the Trickster, but a lot of people who found Him through Marvel were being invalidated by other Pagans and Heathens in the community saying things like “You just really have a crush on Tom Hiddleston and you are delusional for following him because of that.”
Ouch.
Maybe that was the case for some, but Loki of all beings would be the first one to make himself known in this way. The Marvel Loki played by Tom is very different from Himself, but also very much the same. Really, when you look at it, it is Tom himself that personifies the Trickster God and draws people to him. Their personalities are very similar and I feel like Tom channels the God in a lot of ways.
And there you go, Pop-Culture paganism. You identify with Loki, but you prefer the Marvel version so you set up an altar and instead of having a fancy, super expensive effigy of Him, you place a Lego Loki or a Loki Helm pendant that you got at con to represent him. This doesn’t mean you are necessarily worshiping a fictional character, but this is what clicks with you and how you view that God.
There are those, however, that worship actual fictional characters or write rituals around fictional magick, or even perform spells that are written specifically for a TV show or movie.
I have actually cast the “To Find a Lost Witch” spell from Charmed (and it worked) as well as using the Devil’s Trap from Supernatural to protect my magickal tools and even going as far as tattooing it on my body for protection. These things, though fictional, have some root in truth and the fact that millions of people put their energy and time and love into these things, gives them magick all on their own.
It is like the Tulpa (which was in an episode of Supernatural, haha) or thoughtform, a concept in mysticism of a being or object which is created through spiritual or mental powers. The term comes from Tibetan “emanation” or “manifestation”.
What are these fictional Gods, spirits, and ideas but essentially just that? We give them power and then there they are. But there is also the possibility that if you believe in multi-worlds or multi-dimensions that somewhere out there on a different plane of existence, these characters actually DO exist and could be worshiped and revered.
This concept doesn’t sound so far-fetched now, does it?
Here’s another example… tutting. Tutting is inspired by the art of Ancient Egypt (the name derived from the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, colloquially known as “King Tut”), tutting exploits the body’s ability to create geometric positions (such as boxes) and movements, predominantly with the use of right angles. It generally focuses on the arms and hands, and includes sub-styles such as finger tutting. This has been used in Pop-Culture magick examples in shows like “The Magicians” and movies like Marvel’s “Doctor Strange. What is this but using sacred geometry to cast magick. Not only are you using your will and thought to cast, but the movement of the body to will the energy forward. It may have become popular because of fiction, but it is still valid and a lot of people may have been using a form of this magick without even realizing it.
This is how paganism and magick evolves. We have thought, we have intelligence and a thirst for knowledge and we also have the ability to create our own magick and thoughts.
As a writer, I am constantly tweaking known magick, lore, and pagan concepts to fit my stories, but they could also be plausibly used in my actual practice. I even wrote my own tradition (and am still working on it) loosly based off of my fantasy novel series, ”Faytes of the Otherworld". Sometimes I wonder if fiction like this is the writer channeling actual magick, energy, and practice from a higher being. I mean, how did we get the knowledge that we have about our craft and Paganism in the first place? Even monotheism got it’s religion from supposedly God himself, the Bible being written by man but the context being delivered from God, so it would make sense.
I have many more examples, but this post has already become rather long.

I’ve gotten this question before, from other witches and myself: what do you do when your main power source sets for the night?
Nighttime is for shadows, things that are fundamentally different from who I am. The moon is my friend but also not my patron, so what’s there for me to draw strength from?
Well, like most things, it’s complicated. Every witch is an individual, and every sun witch will cope with the disappearance of the sun in a different way. Some will charge sigils or crystals during the day and use that as a back up until the sun rises.
Personally, I transfer my energy from the sun to the stars. All energies have at least some form of duality in their nature, sometimes many more facets than just duality.
The sun is no different, and for me, the star girl comes to life at night.
The stars are her cold light from eons away. I can feel weaker, true, but I accept that darkness is a welcome part of our being, and necessary for us to rest. I feel like some separation from the sun mother is good for me to recharge.
The stars are a much more gentle energy, cool and refreshing. I shine with a colder, white light, and I am much less grounded mentally. This is the time to think about the vastness of the universe beyond us, perhaps about how small we are, also shining like stars in the dark with our different energies.
The only time I am uncomfortable at night is when clouds cover the moon and stars. When I look up a see nothing but a black void bearing down on me. I become uncomfortable with no lights in the darkness.
I’d love to hear from other sun witches about what they do at night! Do you transfer your power to the moon? Do you just wait it out? Or don’t even think about it at all? I’m curious!

Also called Technopaganism, Tech Witchcraft can be defined as the use of modern technology within magical rituals and other forms of witchcraft.
To me (but everyone has their own opinions), it’s really about accepting that the world is changing quite rapidly, and placing technology at the heart of my spirituality by using my computer and mobile phone in my craft - from finding resources, sharing knowledge, meeting fellow witches, etc.
It might seem in strong oppositions with the environmental and traditional values of witchcraft, but I don’t see them as opposite. On the contrary, there is power in using technology for good, and I intend to do so.

Moon is a very simple and straight-forward app telling you the current moon phase according to your location. Ideally, I prefer actually checking the moon phase in the night sky, but as I live in a city, the moon is not always visible, so this app helps me a lot!
Labyrinthos is amazing for Tarot learners as it allows you to learn the meanings and correspondences in a Duolingo kind-of way. You can also draw cards directly on the app if you do not have your Tarot cards with you, or enter the cards you just drew physically to keep track of your previous readings.
Co-Star is a beautifully designed astrology app creating your birth chart, and giving you a hyper-personalized daily horoscope made from an algorithm that is just a bit wonky - but super fun!
Seek is a useful app for all the green witches out there as it allows you to identify wildlife, plants, and fungi with just a picture. Incredibly useful when you are in nature, or in stores, and you don’t know the exact name and properties of a plant that you’d like to harvest or buy.
