[TL] PYSCHOBREAK/Chapter 3

People don't like to admit it bcs cringe or w/e but Homestuck really did revolutionize the webcomic as a storytelling medium and I am endlessly frustrated that before webcomic artists could really stretch our legs fucking webtoonz swooped in, set a new, more restrictive standard, and then monetized and monopolized the ever living fuck out of the concept of The Webcomic until it drove away anyone who couldn't be a professional quality manga artist for free, and now the only webcomics that actually feel like spiritual successors to Homestuck are so obscure they're basically cult classics that you have to beg people to read.

Like it's just so wild to be in high school and see Homestuck be like "we're using like fifteen different artistic mediums to tell this story bcs we can" and be really fucking inspired by that, only to grow up and see basically every webcomic ever have to conform to One Single Standard or fucking perish.

theres literally nothing i want more than rei and adonis lore, it would be an absolute dream come true. why is adonis' family tied to a random japanese vampire cult? why did rei study overseas under adonis' father? what was it like for adonis to have travelled between his home country and japan throughout his youth, ferried around like a coddled child? what versions of rei has adonis seen? what versions of rei does adonis know? did adonis see a side of rei outside of his "comfort zone"? (not as a gifted child in a cemetery or a singer in an underground concert venue, surrounded by his followers, but a boy alone in a foreign country?) is that why adonis has such a nuanced view of orerei/wagarei, viewing them all as manifestations of the same person and acknowledging that to reject one identity as "fake" and the other as "real" is to reject part of rei? will we explore the parallels between adonis and rei, their self-sacrificing natures, their debilitating self-hatred, their duty to help those in need, their endless love? two people who've seen war and the worst of humanity, and yet can't help but love humans nonetheless?

and most importantly DID ADONIS CALL REI "REI" WHEN THEY WERE KIDS

When rei sings "this love song between a human and a monster" adonis stands behind him and mimes the arms of a monster with claws on "monster" (and kaoru and koga do this super cute show-off move)

The camera angles make it hard to tell, but they do some interesting blocking in general during lines about a monster where one (or more) members will stand behind the other with arms outstretched. i think it's supposed to make the member in front look like they have more than 2 arms

Drum kit on stage has a skull and roses (wow, i wonder who picked that one out)

On the line "[every smile of yours] is like a stake piercing my fickle heart" they mime pulling out something from their heart instead of stabbing something in

more undead character lighting!

the heart on the mannequin matches the heart on the jacket! this one's pretty obvious i just really love the way adonis looks in this screenshot

This ending pose is unique in that adonis and koga are in the middle -- usually rei and kaoru (or at the very least rei) take center stage. the exceptions are the event songs, but in these cases the two center positions at the end have always been the 5* and 4* characters. considering that rei is the 4* in this event, not koga, i think it's really sweet that the senpais gave the underclassmen a chance to shine! it feels like undead is on more equal footing in !!!-era ❤️
