It’s OK to be a little weird. You’re an artist and people expect that. Don’t let them down. Now, let’s give this tree a friend. There.

A wallflower. Not the first and certainly not the last of that particular personality breed. Were she more favorable towards potential prey, perhaps Kasandra might even take an opportunity to understand them on a deeper level. As it were, she felt a bit more consistent with the current monotony of her life: seduce, feed, release into the wild once more. Avoid names, avoid faces, and above all, avoid connection. Most deserved the unbearable ache of emptiness which followed them afterwards, but whether this patron also earned a hellish remainder to his mortality had yet to be determined.

“My club seems to draw those types in like moths to a flame.” The most recent conversation with Leighton quickly surfacing within her mind. Even as she spoke, Kasandra began pouring herself a similar glass to match his and although she preferred wine above all else, mimicry of another tended to lend itself to favorability. People search for a familiar habit, any thread of affinity worth latching onto when in the midst of a natural allure. “I would have noticed you. In here, at the very least.” Bringing the glass to parted lips, she pulls it away just before speaking. “Are you waiting on someone?”

image

Yet the cubi knew he had flown under her radar, though his presence within the club was not frequent or long lasting when it occurred. Regardless of the perception, Silas’s main and usually only reason for coming into a place like this was his cursed hunger. There was, however, a detail of her comment that he couldn’t fully ignore. My club. Which explained why she would notice individuals, they were all her paying customers and patrons. It was still odd that she hadn’t noticed him, though this just went to show how skilled the cubi’s irish goodbye had really become. Come inside the club, find the easiest human to feed off of, leave without a trace of his existence within. Not such a bad thing in his mind.

After a gentle head shake, his charcoal hues locked into her own and gave a smile, “No.” Not as if Silas really needed to lie about that fact. He was with no one and no one would be coming up to him stating otherwise, “Just needed to get out. I run a shop on my own and while the silence is nice for a while, social interaction — I’ve heard — is essential for humans.” A chuckle and another sip before he attempted to turn the attention towards herself, “I couldn’t help but notice you say this was your club, how long have you owned it?”

Gabriel waited not so patiently for Silas to hold good on his promise. And as soon as the other incubus exited the store, Gabriel was beside him in a second, “Fucking finally. Now come on. You distract the barista. She’s cute, kinda young for you though. She goes to the college down the road a bit. Don’t get any ideas,” he put his arm around Silas’ shoulders, steering him towards Tranquilitea first. “Then…when I get all their packaged teas, we’ll go to the other one. Switch it up, and watch the madness ensue.”

image

Eyebrows furrowed slightly at the idea of getting ideas when it came to a college student. If anything, she would accidentally become his meal at any given local bar but the cubi often tried to make sure they weren’t too local. The last thing he needed was for someone to remember his face vividly and want to keep any kind of relation going. “Is that really all we are doing?” a laugh fell from his lips before locking up the shop and walking with the fellow cubi, “Just mixing up tea and watching barista’s swear they made that person a chai latte?”

“Hand wrapped? What a service.” Kiera smiled as she leaned over the boxes, considering her choice for a moment. Her aunt was an affectionate woman though, and so she quickly made her decision and pointed towards the box with the words on them. “I think I’ll take that one. I think she’ll love it.” She also liked reusing boxes such as this one, so Kiera was happy with her choice as she leaned against the counter. “Do you hand wrap everything you sell?”, she asked curiously, always interested in how other people handled their shops, whether they involved food or not.

“Yes, especially when I know it's a gift,” he replied as his hands fiddled with paper and bubble wrap. The sound made it a bit hard for the cubi’s softer voice to talk over, but managed to get the message across regardless. It was nice to get questioned on his work, even for something as simple as hand wrapping. It meant that someone was interested in more than what they wanted, curious about the workings of others. “You see what I do daily, how about yourself?” charcoal hues were still fixed on the task at hand, but was always interested in how his customer’s lived and their day to day life.

“What on earth is this meant to be?” The woman held a particular trinket aloft, dubious of its use or even worth as she scoured Knick Knack in a mild effort to entertain herself. Most of the various items were a far cry from revolutionary to Ana, however she did glean some semblance of amusement from antagonizing the store owner… Regardless of how alluring he might appear. Hues skirted along the notepad lying open at the front counter, her prior item laid beside it as she observed the drawings. “He sketches. Is this a quirky little past time or should I be searching for your name in the newspaper comics?” @silaskyun

“Both,” the cubi quickly replied, not looking up as the brunette continued to look around the shop. He was used to this kind of behavior from Ana when she came in, not all objects appealing to the vampire and finding many of them worth mocking. Silas honestly didn’t mind. Not all of his knacks were meant for all tastes and his years of hardship had given him especially thick skin. “I’ve done this as a quirk and for money in newspapers, even some political comics if the money was right.” A statement that held a lot of truth, although he wasn’t sure if anyone could actually find his works anymore. War and time had destroyed a lot of things from his past, some was still probably sitting in an artifact collection back in Korea just collecting dust.

What: Closed starter

Who: Calida and Silas @silaskyun

When: March 25, 2020, 6:56 pm

Where: Art Convention

Calida glowered. There were too many people around her, touching her without permission - even if they were just brushing by. She had to be there, though, as an artist and parlor owner. Fire & Brimstone had its own stand, handing out business cards, showing portfolios, and even giving small tattoos for reduced price.

But she and her employee had been there for a couple hours now, and the witch was growing restless. Leaving the stand in the hands of the other, Lida wandered until she found herself standing in front of a particularly terrible stand. “Are you kidding me?” She muttered to no one in particular before turning to the person beside her. “This is shit. Like, literal shit. You see it, right?”

image

Conventions were always a good time for Silas to get to see what others around him were doing, where the art styles of present day were headed. Over the years he had more than grown into his own ways, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t adapt here and there depending on the look. Never was he found compromising his work, but it was always nice to make a little extra cash now and then. Especially with his travels. Being a cubi meant that eventually he would have to move again and being an artist? Well, it was hit or miss on paying the bills.

His feet gently moved from one booth to the next, buying pieces when they seemed to fit his shop's particular style or even his. That’s when he heard her, ebony hair still bouncing as her body seemed to tense slightly, and words cold enough to send a chill down the spine. The phrase seemed harsh until Silas actually took a look at the artwork the woman referred to. Clearly something you would find at a children’s craft show, not for acclaimed artists to view and it was hard for him not to choke out a little laugh. “Oh, I see it,” he replied, holding onto a bag with prints from the day and a look on his face that matched the tone, “It’s amazing what people will try and pass as art these days.”

Do you like what you are?

Silas: Like is a very strong word. Accepted is probably the more accurate way of saying it and I don’t think I would go as far as saying I hate what I am either. I have become something for a reason, even if it was completely out of ignorance and eventually I will understand the depth of it all.

Gabriel had made his way around the store to stand by Silas finally, tilting his head a little bit more at the snark that exited his friend’s mouth. The other incubus was soft; a kinder spirit than Gabriel had ever met in his entire existence. And that existence was being reminded to him, again. “Oh, so he’s got jokes.” Gabriel huffed out a laugh, shoving Silas lightly, “Unbelievable. I offer you my friendship, my wisdom with all my age, and you just – throw it back at me. Forget it. I’m going to steal the tea recipes and then I’m going to blame you.”

image

“Alright, see you in about thirty minutes,” the fellow cubi kept the smirk firmly planted on his face as Gabriel attempted to psych him out. Silas wasn’t exactly sure if he really needed another with him in order to do the deed, but assumed another set of hands was probably necessary. Either that or another set of eyes. Regardless, he was involved now for better or worse. “Maybe you can support the bookstore across the street while you wait. I’m sure there is something you haven’t seen yet.”

It must have been interesting. Showing up at old estates, going through storage bins, just collecting old relics. You could learn a lot about a person by their belongings, interior decorating, that kind of thing. Despite his often nomadic nature, Leighton often wanted a house just to fill it with things. An old Victorian kind of place full of furniture and knick knacks from his travels. Make it like a museum of his life, of his travels. Collecting such artifacts kind of made Silas a tourist in these people’s lives. Someone who shows up and buys great grandmother’s ottoman. “If only these things could talk, right?” Leighton turned his head to offer Silas a small smile before picking up what looked like a wooden jewelry box off a shelf. Simple, but the craftsmanship was beautiful. Something for Lia maybe, but he didn’t know if she’d appreciate it. “Ever run into anything…” He wasn’t quite sure how to phrase it out in the open. “Suspicious?” Cursed, enchanted, that kind of thing. Items that should probably be passed off to the witches, maybe even a genasi.

image

Hadn’t that been the whole reason for Silas’ current existence? Suspicious artifacts, cursed objects, enchanted things that gave the allure of normalcy and tricked the unsuspecting. Not in the sense that the cubi did this for a living wage, that his whole life was altered by what Leighton called suspicious. Silas would be lying if he said that wasn’t a major part of why he went heavier into that side of the business. The more he was in contact with supernatural objects, the more he could learn from them and how they all functioned. He couldn’t afford to be ignorant to their existence and instead had to embrace it, find out more. “Absolutely,” was the cubi gut response given his close ties and personal feelings. Many of his clients were part of the community and wanted to remain confidential, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t speak on his other lines of work. Even his own connection continued to be a mystery for most, which he didn’t mind keeping that way, “It’s rather interesting that over the years I’ve become well-known for that— able to dig out what others are seeking so eagerly. And enchanted artifacts are a hot ticket item depending on the need or purpose.”

A look: oversized t-shirt, yesterday’s jeans, yesterday’s make-up– all of that paired with some very fashionable puffy red eyes she could not have been bothered to cover. The girl hadn’t even remembered to put on her shoes as she stormed out of the building and ran until her feet felt wet sand under them.

It was odd. The ocean had never before offered her any kind of comfort whatsoever. Not until coming to Corinth Bay, anyways. But now she found herself at its shore whenever she felt like there was nowhere else to go. Nowhere else to run. With a deep breath she let the sound of the waves slow down her heart– and she was almost successful until she felt a splash of water hitting her face (mind you, one that clearly did not come from the ocean’s nature itself).

Lucy gave an audible gasp and then a loud and irritated: “Will you stop that?!” directed to the source.

@corinthbaystarters

At times, Silas found himself seaside listening to the waves crashing right below his feet. Sketchbook in hand with a large bag of different artists' tools depending on his mood, drawing anything that interested him or came into his mind. Sometimes it was the water itself, other times it was the various faces that could be found making their way across the gulf’s drift wood and pieces of shells. It was a chance to get away from his shop and find new inspiration in the people that called Corinth their home, along with the many visitors that appreciated its allure.

That was when she appeared— hair catching light giving it hints of crimson and gold. The woman had also seemed out of place. Not in the sense that she didn’t belong around the bay, just that she almost didn’t seem to know what exactly she was running to. More that she had to run from something. The cubi began to sketch her, entranced by her presence until he heard her shout at the water tides with all her might. Expression changed within moments and he attempted to sketch that, too. Charcoal hues glanced up and back down at his paper, trying not to seem too obvious with his movements as he wanted to keep capturing her naturally. A tool he often used when evading the North Korean army during the war, drawing them without even realizing he had been feet away the entire time.

Connor only ever visited the library when he had absolutely no other choice. It definitely had nothing to do with Gabriel (except that it had everything to do with Gabriel). He often snuck in when he felt like the Cubi wasn’t paying attention, and had nearly successfully avoided him on most occasions. Browsing the stacks now, he ran fingers down the spine of a historical biography, chewing his lower lip. He spoke Greek but reading it was still sometimes a struggle. French had always been his forte. Too bad he couldn’t find a translator patient enough to work through it with him. After some struggle, he finally plucked the right book off the shelf and moved to a different section- crafting- looking for a place to settle on the floor to get to work. He stopped as he rounded the corner to find a face that looked familiar but he couldn’t place- perhaps it was a customer that frequented the shop- “Excuse me, but I’m looking for a bit of help.” He raised the book and wiggled it slightly, “I have trouble reading Greek, are you any good?” ( @silaskyun )

image

What Silas loved about the local library was how large their selection was. Many of the small towns he had found himself in barely had anything at all, not even a government funded one, and there was something about the feeling of a book in his hand that he still couldn’t get over. Their section on woodwork had copies of books that the cubi had never laid eyes on. Such as ‘Tricks of the Trade’ and ‘The House Beautiful’ by Clarence Cook, most of which had been translated into Greek text and was still difficult for him to read. Sure, it gave him the practice he much needed but didn’t exactly help when certain tools didn’t quite fit the translation as he had hoped. Most of the time he would find himself digging out his phone for help from Google to get it into Korean, but it never worked well. Even the English translation came off choppy and tricky to read. So when he heard the man next to him asking for assistance, Silas wasn’t exactly sure he could offer much assistance. He gave the man a meek grimace, but charcoal hues remained kind, “Not sure how much help I would be. Greek is far from my first language, but I could always give it a go.”

“Okay.” Her eyes looked down at the blue tinted one once more, and when he posed his question, she realized that he was right. It was the one her aunt would probably never pick for herself, and therefore the perfect gift. “You’re right, she wouldn’t. That’s a great idea. I’ll take the blue one then. Do you possibly have a box it can fit in as well?”

image

Gentle head nods fell from the cubi as he pulled the mask towards himself. Silas was sure he had the right gift wrap for this particular style, getting out two sleek black boxes. One had a gold tint in the writing, embossed with the words ‘with love’ in the center. The other was similar with silver instead of the gold, but held no words and displayed an abstract geometric pattern. “Take your pick and I’ll hand wrap it for you,” warm words fell from his lips, happy that the mask was going to go into a wonderful home.

safiyebasak‌:

Most of the time, Safiye procured objects others required. In her time in Corinth Bay, she’d built a network of smugglers and fences and information gatherers–plus one idiot vampire–sand it allowed her to move things in and out of the area with relative ease so long as she knew the channels to get there. This item, however, was a bit more difficult. Most witches didn’t attempt to make them anymore because of the hazard in keeping them stable. It looked to be a simple magnifying glass, but it acted as a focus for spellwork that allowed the caster to amplify their spell without the use of another witch. It was risky and the object itself could potentially backfire, but if used properly and carefully, the results were magnificent. They were rare and expensive, and witches in possession of one were loathe to part with it for obvious reasons. Safiye needed one, which meant she needed to find a witch to relieve of it.

image

When she saw Silas called, she ignored the voicemail in favor of some bookkeeping, and only later in the evening did she remember to actually check it. Once she heard it, she immediately gathered her purse and a few other items and shot off a few texts to let him know she was on her way. She had to see it to make sure it was real, but Silas was almost never wrong about these things.

The walk to Knick Knack was a quick one, spurred by equal parts of excitement and curiosity. Sure the door was locked considering the early evening hour, Safiye rapped on it and then peered through the window as she tried to catch a glimpse of the man, hoping she hadn’t missed him.

There was always plenty to do at the shop. Custom orders to finish, various research to do, and even items to clean up in the back that would soon find their place on the shelves. That’s why when he hadn’t heard back from the gensai, Silas wasn’t all that concerned. She had work to do just like himself, although he was aware that this item was of extreme importance or it wouldn’t have been such an eager hunt. His hours were never really set in stone given his line of work, so the texts from Safiye were no real surprise. A small light was lit in the front of the store to indicate that someone was still around, but the closed sign remained in place. Once he heard the gentle tapping, feet swiftly moved to the door as he checked to make sure it was the proper client. Unlatching the locks, a heavy security system he had put into place after dealings with unhappy supernatural lead him to a trashed shop, Silas let her in.

“Let’s go to the back,” he stated before the brunette could say anything, locking back up and directing her towards his back room. This was an area that not many actually got to see. Half finished projects littered the room, along with various tools and a cot set up in the corner for when the longer hours left him unable to walk home. He walked up to a desk that was strewn with papers and artists pens, placing his rough hands on the knob of a drawer before sliding it open. The object was wrapped in loose newspaper, removing each layer before handing the magnifying glass to Safiye with a hopeful expression. “Looks to be the real deal. I found a few copy cats, but it was easy to tell by the makers mark that it wasn’t right. What do you think?”

noraxzhao‌:

“Silas?”

Nora stepped into the silent, warm interior of Knick Knack, and though the bell on the door announced her arrival, she called for him for good measure, just to be sure. She stepped around the shop, bag over her shoulder and a small stack of business cards in her hand, finally halting at a dining set she’d made a month ago. Much to her delight, a neat handwritten card sat atop it with the single word sold written across it. She’d done matching scrolling carving on the legs of each of the chairs as well as the table, and the table itself could expand to fit more people than just four. About then she heard soft footsteps heading towards her from elsewhere in the shop, and she turned to grin at whom she assumed was Silas himself.

“It sold!” she chirped happily. “That’s wonderful!” Momentarily, the few smaller objects to hand over to him and the additional business cards were forgotten in favor of celebrating the sale of something she’d spent absolute ages on–it was nice to know someone else liked her work as much as she enjoyed making it. @silaskyun

image

Ding, ding.

The cubi’s heart leapt at the sound of the chime, hyper focused on the object glistening in his hand and notes strewn about. Ever since he had woken up with the scale and no memory of the day before, everything about him didn’t make sense. It was as if the core of his personality shifted slightly and he couldn’t keep his hands off the scale. Currently it was snug inside his pocket, the same one his hand gently slid into as he made his way to the front of his store. Silas’ saving grace was the familiarity of the voice, but it could also be a downfall. Ones that knew him best might notice the behavior shift and his need to understand why he had the scale in the first place, but he hoped Nora would be a good escape. He left his notebook open, still on the day that he had written the events that he no longer could bring back to the forefront.

“To a lovely couple that just moved in together,” a broad smile on his face, welcoming the wolf’s excitement and leaned casually on his front counter, “Asked if you could also do a few other personal pieces to match, if you are up for it.” Which he had assumed Nora would be, already giving the couple reassurance that it could be done. “A lot of people had been eyeing it, but these two seem as though they will cherish it. They both seemed tired of the same old Ikea look and your work is one of a kind, truly meant to be heirloom pieces.”

ancient greek word of the day: ἀθάνατος (athanatos), deathless, immortal

Tags

Over time, Silas had gotten used to forgetting a day or two from the past. Memory had this oddness about it that could be fleeting or become twisted and he had noticed this gradually as the years passed on. That’s what his journaling had been for, a habit that started during the war and only continued as things worsened in his home country. But this was and felt so different. Sure a day would go by that might be less than eventful, causing the cubi to pause at the memory of the day or two before— but the day was gone. Not just little cracks of what happened, completely wiped from existence. All he had was the various notes he had written later that night about the oddity and curiosity of what he had seen that night. However, none of it made sense and Silas couldn’t even draw out the connection. When his mind would try to dig it out, it was as though a dark blank was placed there instead.

Tapping lightly on the end of his pen, Silas sat puzzled on a bench outside his shop. The sign currently read closed as he grappled with the situation. As if the memory wasn’t hard enough for him, the damn Eidolon’s wouldn’t let him be. They were trying their hardest to chip away at him, but his attentions had been in so many different places that seeing his dead relatives had been the last of his concerns. The scale and the journal entry was driving the cubi madder than any Eidolon could. Even the fact that his sister wasn’t present in his hauntings didn’t phase him, a detail that wouldn’t have usually gone past the young cubi and instead the emerald shimmer flooded his thoughts. He shuffled it through his fingers tips, eyes locked and entranced while the world around him seemed to keep beating. How could he have possibly noticed the shadow of a man coming towards his direction?

“Well,” Kiera said slowly as she put both of the masks back down on the counter to look at them. Folding her arms over her chest, she pursed her lips, trying to find the best words to describe her aunt. “She’s… very warm and loving as a person. She enjoys nature and good weather, and tea. She likes to dance, too. And she’s a horrible cook,” she joked, tilting her head to the side as she looked back down at the masks. “Does that help?”

Kieratandanu‌:

“I would go with the blue tinted one then,” he replied, an absolution in his voice that wasn’t present before. He liked to pride himself on knowing his clients and having a feeling about what items belonged with whom. It was something that he had practiced over the years, especially when his father had been training him. “It seems as though it might not be something she would normally pick out for herself, what do you think?”

“Silas, you have to pretend to be a little excited. Don’t give me that look – or I’ll invite Safiye instead and let you watch through your little shop window.” He waved a hand in the direction of Pandora’s Lore, smiling a little at the other cubi. Gabriel sighed dramatically and pulled himself up onto the counter, “A half hour? What do you expect me to do while I wait? Dust your shelves? My hands are far too delicate for that kind of work, darling.”

image

“You and I both know that’s an empty threat or you would already be at her doorstep,” the fellow cubi retorted with a chuckle, this hardly being the first time something similar fell from Gabriel’s lips when Silas didn’t seem as thrilled as he anticipated. By this time, to his friends dismay, the cubi had fully intended on going along with any plan. He had just grown to love ruffling Gabriel’s feather’s and learning more about him through the reactions. “And I’m sure you can find a way to entertain yourself for a measly half hour— you have made it this long, after all,” a bit of a devious grin emerged onto Silas’ face as his charcoal hues peer at his friend, “What was it like being the first human being, anyway? You’re what— one hundred and ninety thousand now?”
