🛌 from @kasandrarosales take a nap with yours

The only reason Silas knew the days had changed was by the light or darkness he found when his eyes finally opened. Nightmares, regardless of the time the cubi’s eyes finally shut, had been more than brutal and real to the point of needing another to tell him this was reality. Maybe that was why he found himself on Kasandra’s front door — or maybe it had more to do with her actually being able to relate to his issues. As many people as he could got a white lie or two, residual effects of the eidolons and seeing his family like that, though it was truly the emerald scale that ruled every inch of his experiences. He passed the floor of her entryway and tapped again on the door, wondering if his original was too soft out of anxiety of even being here. It had been awhile since he felt close or desperate enough to seek aid in another, suddenly hearing the gentle footsteps of the other checking to see who it was. The creek of the door echoed as Silas turned towards the noise with a half-hearted grin and yearning hues, “I-uh.” Now that the fellow cubi was staring at him, Silas wasn’t sure how to ask but forced his tired brain to make a sentence, “Do you mind if I try to sleep on your couch? I— I would appreciate the help and just discerning what is authentic.”

“What caught your eye?” a silky voice echoed from behind what used to be a perfectly fine desk. Now, just a few years after being taken in by its new owner, it has been littered with paint that managed to miss the objects it was meant for. Various papers, works in progress, and tools littered any other free space much like the shop itself. Brightly colored masks hung above him, furniture with large yellow price tags that seconded as shelving for other pieces— unique objects with every turn that many came to gawk as if it were a museum. Silas had only owned the shop for a few years, but business was starting to get pretty regular through word of mouth. Advertising by featuring local artists and that in turn had really boosted his foot traffic. A broad smile followed with surprisingly warm eyes, hardly the look of someone blemished for eternity. He set down his pen and moved closer to the entrance.

People were interesting most of the time. The way they moved about as if nothing was wrong with the world intrigued him. They were surely blinded by how charming the people that desperately wanted to take advantage of that were. His own boyfriend had been blinded, but he would never lump Elias in with the rest. No, he was one of a kind. Everyone else though? They were just naive. As he walked into the nearby flower shop that happened to be across the street from his funeral parlor, he looked around for a moment before turning to the nearest body. “What flowers do you think a child would want at their funeral. Mother says daisies, but that sounds pretty fucking stupid, doesn’t it?”

Kaanerdcgan:

Most of the cubi that Silas knew only held some similar qualities to himself, which was fine given the differences between backgrounds and where everyone was from. All older than himself as the line of their kind seemed to diminish over time, making them more and more rare. That’s why he tried to make friends when he discovered they, too, had been changed or crossed the wrong god. “I suppose I understand the color choice— white, innocence and all that,” giving the mother some benefit of doubt, even if Kaan always saw the more cynical side of life, “Those camellia look nice or maybe the freesia?”

Gabriel could almost feel the regret coming from the other incubus. It was there, in Silas’ eyes. The other was so gentle, it was almost ridiculous to think about. Then again, Silas was young. Gabriel just wasn’t sure if he had the patience to help the Kyun out for the rest of their time in Corinth Bay. “You’re right about that. I guess I can forgive you.” He turned towards Silas, crossing his arms over his chest as he gave the other cubi a once over. “What was wrong, Silas? What had you so agitated that you thought it’d be cool to…” he waved his hand a little, “weird. Not calm? I don’t know. Ela, sit down. You’re making me stressed by just standing there looking like I stole your pet rock.”

image

“My pet rock—” the fellow cubi huffed at the idea of something so silly, but took a seat where Gabriel had motioned with ease. Maybe it was the way his exhaustion hung on his expression that caused the reaction he received from him, though Silas hardly thought it warranted any amount of stress. He simply came to explain, even if it wasn’t a conversation that the other really cared to have. “Well. Guess it was the same thing that Kasandra had, that emerald scale,” his tone was calm, though remembering the havoc the scale caused should have unsettled him greatly but it was all over now. Destroyed by the hands of a genasi, finding help in the most unlikely places, “Safiye from the book shop by mine assisted me in getting rid of it after Kas told me more about what it was. The thing had me convinced I needed to keep it by my side.”

At times, Silas found himself seaside listening to the waves crashing right below his feet. Sketchbook in hand with a large bag of different artists’ tools depending on his mood, drawing anything that interested him or came into his mind. Sometimes it was the water itself, other times it was the various faces that could be found making their way across the gulf’s drift wood and pieces of shells. It was a chance to get away from his shop and find new inspiration in the people that called Corinth their home, along with the many visitors that appreciated its allure. That was when he appeared— hair catching light giving it hints of crimson and gold within its darkness. The cubi began to sketch, entranced by his presence as charcoal hues glanced up and back down to keep capturing him naturally. A tool he often used when evading the North Korean army during the war, attempting to draw without the individual even realizing that Silas was just feet away the entire time. Though he supposed those within the army were simply humans, not full of glistening magic like the man whose eyes zeroed in on him.

“That’s really cool.” It was, even if not everyone would see it that way. Kiera knew people often didn’t pay attention to detail or the work that had been put into gifts or items produced. She did, as it was how she earned her own income, and it put a smile on her lips to watch his hands wrap up the mask with great care. “Me? Oh, I cook. I have a small restaurant down the street. So I can appreciate someone treating their customers nicely a lot,” she smiled.

Kieratandanu‌:

Only part of Silas was taken aback by her youth and owning her own restaurant, having seen many take over the family trade around her age back home. It just didn’t seem as prevalent in many if the European regions and it excited him, though his expression hardly showed it. Clearly this woman knew how to hustle, a quality he admired and reminded him of his sister. “Kiki’s?” the cubi asked, having seen it a few times during his walks into the store but had never stopped in.

“Would you believe me if I said that’s precisely what I wanted to hear today?” He plays coy with the true reason behind his visit for only a moment longer before settling into natural charm, slightly disconcerted that the other man held a vastly greater allure without actually trying. “White, medium sized, and in an ornate metal holder. The wax has an intricate carving on one side. Does any of that sound familiar?” Fingers brushed at the crux of his neck, an uncharacteristic turmoil overtaking in that moment. As much as Giovanni intended to use Silas for his own knowledge, there came something rather striking about the other man and almost… trustworthy. The sensation struck him as both odd and comforting in the same breath. “If someone wished to pawn it, I thought you might be their first stop.”

image

Of course it sounded familiar, though Silas was having a hard time actually allowing those words to come out of his mouth. He hadn’t had the chance to really look into it, seeing as it had only been a few days of it being in his possession, and the idea of simply handing it over to Giovanni without a second thought seemed foolish. The incubus knew better than that. Trust was something that came later, with time, and the man that stood before him hadn’t been granted that level as far as Silas was concerned. Stalling, however, wasn’t exactly possible at this moment. What did the cubi care anyway? He had already had his fill of dabbling with cursed objects and the goal had to be who was going to be his highest bidder, “Yeah I’ve got a couple that might fit that description in the back— hadn’t gotten around to placing them out on display yet. Just let me bring them up.”

Months had gone by without a single trace, causing Silas to wonder if the object existed in the first place. Rumors and hanging onto belief that his client was right in her pursuit grew difficult, but Safiye insisted on his continued search. The cubi listened without attaching too much thought. It was never any of his business why certain items needed to be obtained and simply accepted that if it wasn’t him, it would be someone else. Which led him down a path that he hadn’t quite expected this time and talking to individuals from many different walks of life. Originally the necklace was traced back to Gascony, a region in France that was ruled by the English Crown during the 14th century. Once the witch trials had started, however, many of the possessions in the area were lost or obliterated. Finding anything during that period of destruction was next to impossible, but not completely. “Hey, it’s Silas at Knick Knack. I think I found it,” he stated calmly on her voicemail as charcoal hues continued to examine the detail of the brass and condition of its embedded stones. It was as if it was brand new, glass still in perfect condition and hung by the original chain. Though the cubi knew after over fifty years of experience that items like this are not always what they seem.

Months Had Gone By Without A Single Trace, Causing Silas To Wonder If The Object Existed In The First

Every so often he found himself in the small shop surrounded by things he definitely should not fill his London flat with at the expense of looking like a tourist. Shelves were already lined with trinkets from here or there. Sometimes it a souvenir wasn’t something that he could buy, a rock off the ground from a particularly beautiful mountain, a flower from the edge of a lush forest. Hell, Leighton had leaves pressed between pages with their name, location, and the date he’d found them, meticulously scrawled beside them. Everything was an attempt to capture the feeling of a moment in a place as he desperately sought to document the abundance of time on his hands.

Silas had made this more than just a place for tourists though. Local art pieces hung among the knick knacks, pieces of furniture finely crafted, a couple of oddities from the beaches here and there. “I’m trying to decide if I do indeed need another teapot or if I should just surrender and buy a proper cabinet to display them all in.” He took a sip of the tea in the thermos in his hand and nodded to the shelf. “The kittens might be too whimsical to pass up.”

image

Leighton had become something of a regular at Knick Knack and the pattern seemed to form in the blink of an eye. Sometimes the vampire would mosey in with general conviction, knowing exactly what he wanted as if the moment depended on it. Other times his shoulders looked slunk and caused Silas to wonder if the shop was just another way to pass the time. Not as if that was a horrible thing in the young cubi’s mind, the gods knew that was why he continued to do it. Trinkets, the little things, and all those varying purchases could be used as a way to connect and remember when time was the enemy. His own studio could be found with different objects littered about that helped keep his mind sharp and attached to the memories most important to Silas.

“You could finally accept my offer to build you one,” the cubi joked, but half hoped Leighton would actually say the word. He had several different concepts that he kept on the side, unable to control himself after the vampire had first mentioned it. Cabinets was almost a specialty at this point, having designed many during his time in Korea and felt a bit eager to craft another. Especially for someone like Leighton and the unique way he decorated his loft back home, “And take the whimsical kittens.”
