Ahem^^^
THEORY TIME
okay so if you’ve seen the clip, this is from the VERY first Sanders sides video, right?
Logan mentions procrastination as being one of his flaws
Patton mentions selfishness being another
And Roman mentions him not being very adventurous
Now, I know you guys are thinking what I’m thinking, but let’s bring more to the table, about ALL of these:
////
We know Roman is referring to Anxiety, which is his hinderance when it comes to performing his function by fear tactic and, well, anxiety towards certain activities and opportunities.
Then you’ve got Patton, who’s obviously referring to Deceit, who’s main appearances are trying to get Thomas to perform something selfish or considered to be such by Patton, hindering Patton’s function.
Then you’ve got Logan, who mentions a side of Thomas that’s more so assumed than they are represented: his lazy side.
//If I wanted to go off more on this tangent, Logan does call all of these things flaws like Thomas called Janus a flaw to his face in SvS redux (Putting Others First) and I’m totally not salty about that one//
//can I also say that every single episode could be interpreted to reflect on something already mentioned in the first episode— but that’s just food for thought//
(I’d also like to say that Remus is rarely, if at all mentioned prior to his episode, but his text will be green regardless)
If we’re to take this episode by episode, the first one obviously covered (although not completely extensive)
(All the colors stand for who is HINTED at the most, not who was present, although sometimes overlapping)
————
In Way Too Adult, Patton literally insinuates by the first minute that Thomas is lazy, by laying claim of his complaints that he cannot cook, and his lack of attempts at doing so, fueling the idea that OJ (the orange side, as I’ll use from here on out) is Laziness/sloth/procrastination.
————
Taking on Anxiety: we literally get Virgil. And, oddly enough, he comes up a lot like Remus does. He shows up “uninvited.” Anyway, he really does put on the “I’m really enjoying your suffering” type of deal in the episode and by Gd I missed it that differentiates him from the other sides. As we learn later, he’s a ‘dark side’ yadda yadda.
Anyway, the first person that Thomas summons to combat his anxiety is Roman— not Logan to logic his way out, not Patton to make him feel better, but Roman— and from the episode, to hope and wish him away.
So, it’s clear from this episode onward in the series that Roman and Virgil are tied just like Patton and Janus from Can Lying be good, but we’ll get there.
————
A New Year of Lying to Myself: this episode originally started off with Patton telling Thomas about all the responsibilities he has been procrastinating, hinting again at its existence— but mostly becomes a gigantic hint at Deceit, coming namely from the side with the most experience with the guy— Virgil.
————
Dark Side of Disney is namely just solidifying the relationship between Roman and Virgil (with the hint at Deceit with “lying and deceiving their way right into the castle and getting the princess,” which, we all can agree was deliberate word choice. As well as the next scene where they debate the Fox and the Hound, Virgil arguing that society in the film is absolute sh*t (excuse my language), just as Deceit later argues in SvS. And, the lawyer thing with the Little Mermaid, but that might be a stretch lol.
————
IM IN A DISNEY SHOW: it’s just the sides fanboying and we love it
————
Mind vs. Heart: Logan and Patton going at it, the only potential hints being at Deceit for Thomas’ overall lack of self care and prioritization of other people, covered in SvS Redux— with oddly enough Logan arguing to prioritize Thomas, then others. This video was like an introduction to the entirety that was Deceit’s character arc. Huh.
————
Alone on Valentines Day: starts off clean with Virgil telling Patton not to lie to Thomas, but overall Virgil has the most influence over the conversation. Anxiety existed within Thomas whether he was there or not. He got to state his opinions and ended up making a point and helping Thomas, making this episode more so about his contributions. (And the small build of Roman and Virgil’s relationship—)
————
Losing my Motivation: literally, and I quote; “I DONT KNOW, LOGIC! I KNOW IT DEFIES..... Logic. I’m just a textbook procrastinator!” If that isn’t OJ I don’t know what is. And, Logan is the one to call him out. Logan goes on to say that procrastination is not the cause, it is the effect, which could be implying that OJ as a side is the result of the others leaving or being introduced to Thomas. It’s even in the title.
There is the small bit of “I’m not ALWAYS the bad guy” Virgil angst but that’s not the point—
There’s also the knife thing and Roman using a nickname used as an insult which reminds me of Remus but I digress.
There’s ALSO the snake hint that Logan mentions as a paradox but I’m just taking stabs at anything at this point
Anyway, Logan (awww this was his name reveal) really does work on the issue addressed in this video— by developing a life management system to create a more productive and healthy Thomas, which, he ends up rementioning in SvS.
————
Q&A: Logan and Roman both for strike just a little Anxiety to Patton by telling him to not screw up, but that’s not the most important thing in this. Anxiety does show up, and is invitied to stay! :D
We learn Roman is attempting self love we know how that turns out, a few other small factoids about the sides, and funny stuff we all really enjoyed, but other than that, there is little— aside from:
Thomas made two individual references to getting to know the sides better in this episode, including learning their names and “hopefully we get to learn a little bit more about them in videos to come!” Which could refer to their individual traits, their issues, or potential relationships (siblings, dark sides, etc)
————
Am I Original?: we are introduced to the idea of Full Creative Control, which, with the introduction of Remus, could mean A.) he was deprived of power in this episode, or B.) we have the potential to see it come out in Remus, or has already come out due to Thomas being out of sorts, giving Remus all the power he needed, with Deceit’s help.
Also Roman angst
(I highlighted this green based on the theory— there isn’t much that has to do with non-introduced sides in this video ngl)
————
My NEGATIVE Thinking: Small Batman reference, and Deceit ends up making one as well in Embarrassing Phases, but again little connection. Anxiety takes a primary role in this, while Logan ‘dukes’ him out in a debate-like setting. (Overall I’ll give it to Virgil as it is more of an argument as to who holds more ground in the situation, but there are references all around)
In the video, Logan covers Cognitive Distortions, describing Virgil’s input as “Bad Imagination,” which could be a reference to Remus, but again, a bit of a stretch. (We’re also introduced to the idea the Creativity can be, physically and metaphorically, bruised, taking Roman out for the video, implying that Remus could as well be bruised to an extent, so angst writers do what you will with that information)
Productivity was covered in the second question, in which Logan was GOING to answer fully, before Virgil called out his answer to be unclear, asking him to answer honestly multiple times over, distorting the conversation and Virgil taking control. Logan also mentioned Virgil’s ’Silver tongue,’ a trait primarily attributed to Deceit and Virgil hissing but that’s beside the point.
————
Growing Up: Intro was about procrastination— and, what he has to accomplish as he gets older. They compare Thomas’ achievements to that of their friends, and how he hasn’t accomplished much, which could be a nod to his lack of productivity, I.e., OJ.
They accuse Patton of allowing the lack of Productivity, which, is odd because of the second video, which shows him being the leading force in eliminating laziness.
There’s the bit about Virgil saying Thomas looks like the ‘Man’ and that he wants to fight him, which could be a reference to his disliking of societal heiarchy, which could have been instilled in him by Deceit.
The Mind palace, might I add, could probably come into later use as more sides appear and are instituted into videos— but that’s just an Hypothesis. (And Patton’s name!)
————
Making Some Changes: we’ve never really discussed on the idea that Patton gets confused, like, Chronically confused and emotional with excessive change— which may have come into play in more recent episodes that ever noticed.
Anyway, Virgil takes a stand in this episode as well— ‘siding’ (bu-dum tsss) with Patton on the issue of change which is a thing in Deceit’s playlist but I digress, saying that the lack of steady constants is stressing Thomas out, being away from his friends, which affects Virgil and Patton specifically.
Many single-central-column-wall breaks later and Virgil complains to Thomas as to why this doesn’t feel right, all the talk on Change, and Thomas closes up by saying he loves each of them just the way they are and later hating the way Remus and Janus are.
————
Becoming a CARTOON: Patton says woopsie-doodles, something Deceit ends up saying in the bloopers for SvS but that irrelevant
Not really many references in this video— only Virgil being frustrated to be the Bad guy, which, was a good building block for the next video— Accepting Anxiety pt. 1
————
A few last things: people who write the subtitles; stop adding excessive things— they contribute nothing and make it harder to read the dialogue.
I would like to personally thank @beautiful-doom for OJ as the name for the Orange side, which, I find hilarious and cannon until proven otherwise.
Okay! This is 15/30 of the videos, analyzed and gone over for hints. I’ll come to more of a conclusion after I’ve watched the other 15 and analyzed them for references and hints. Please, go over these and add anything I may have missed!
See you in Part 2 of this post!
