One Of My Favourite Geology Facts Is This: These Diagrams Are A Lie.

The mantle isn’t yellow. Nor is it orange, or red, or brown, or gray, or black.

The earth’s mantle is made up largely of peridotite.

The earth’s mantle is lime green.

First birds made honking sounds more than 66 million years ago
A new fossil discovery has shown that birds developed the unique vocal organ that enables them to sing more than 66 million years ago when dinosaurs were around

Birds developed the unique vocal organ that enables them to sing more than 66 million years ago when dinosaurs walked the Earth, a new fossil discovery has shown.

But the earliest syrinx, an arrangement of vibrating cartilage rings at the base of the windpipe, was still a long way from producing the lilting notes of a song thrush or blackbird.

Scientists believe the extinct duck and goose relative that possessed the organ was only capable of making honking noises.

The bird, Vegavis iaai, lived during the Cretaceous era. Although its fossil bones were unearthed from Vega Island in Antarctica in 1992, it was not until three years ago that experts spotted the syrinx.

All birds living today are descended from a particular family of dinosaurs that developed feathers and the ability to fly.

The new discovery suggests the syrinx is another hallmark of birds that was absent from non-avian dinosaurs…

Israeli scientists see breakthrough in AIDS cure

Drug now being tested causes HIV-infected cells to self-destruct without harming the rest of the body

HIV and AIDS patients may find new hope in a drug developed at Hebrew University in Jerusalem which is currently being tested at the Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot.

The drug was inserted into test tubes containing the blood of ten AIDS patients currently being treated at the hospital, and was found to decrease the HIV virus count in the blood samples by as much as 97 percent in just eight days, Channel 2 reported Monday.

The active ingredient in the drug is a peptide, or smaller version of a protein, that was developed by Abraham Loyter and Assaf Friedler at Hebrew University. The peptide causes several copies of the virus’s DNA to enter the infected cell, instead of just one copy, causing the cell to self-destruct.

HIV is currently treated with a cocktail of drugs that slow the progression of the infection in the body but never rid the patient of the virus entirely. These drugs have allowed doctors to treat AIDS as a chronic illness as opposed to a fatal one.

Loyter explained that the new approach is superior to previous efforts.

“With our approach,” Loyter told Channel 2, “we are destroying the cells, so there is no chance that the virus will awaken one day, because there are no cells, there will be no cells that contain the virus.”

Loyter explained that “the drug enhances certain processes in the body during the spreading of the virus and that enhancement kills certain cells.”

In a separate but related development, the Health Ministry announced last week it would begin distributing prophylactic drugs for the first time to populations at higher risk of contracting HIV. The drugs, when taken regularly, have been found to be effective in preventing the spread of HIV during contact.

One Of The Most Dangerous Pictures Ever Taken - Elephant’s Foot, Chernobyl. This Is A Photo Of A Now
One Of The Most Dangerous Pictures Ever Taken - Elephant’s Foot, Chernobyl. This Is A Photo Of A Now

One of the most dangerous pictures ever taken - Elephant’s Foot, Chernobyl. This is a photo of a now dead man next the ‘Elephant’ Foot’ at the Chernobyl power plant.

The image distortions in the photo are created by intense level of radiation almost beyond comprehension. There is no way the person in this photo and the person photographing him could have survived for any more that a few years after being there, even if they quickly ran in, took the photos and ran out again. This photo would be impossible to take today as the rates of radioactive decay are even more extreme now due to a failed military experiment to bomb the reactor core with neuron absorbers.  The foot is made up of a small percentage of uranium with the bulk mostly melted sand, concrete and other materials which the molten corium turns into a kind of lava flow. In recent years, it has destroyed a robot which tried to approach it, and the last photos were taken via a mirror mounted to a pole held at the other end of the corridor for a few seconds. It is almost certainly the most dangerous and unstable creation made by humans.  These are the effects of exposure: 30 seconds of exposure - dizziness and fatigue a week later 2 minutes of exposure - cells begin to hemorrhage (ruptured blood vessels) 4 minutes - vomiting, diarrhea, and fever  300 seconds - two days to live

Uhmm, how exactly were all of those megafauna able to grow that large and function??? And how the fuck was that giant bird actually able to fly????????

Realistic answer?  Mostly because humans hadn’t come around and hunted them all to extinction yet.  Dinosaurs are exempt from this because they vastly predated us, but almost anything that coincided with our timeline, we killed.

We are, for our relatively small size and frail, sometimes clumsy physical characteristics, a TERRIFYING species.

Evolution has produced all kinds of Big Shit.  Ever seen a Paraceratherium?

Uhmm, How Exactly Were All Of Those Megafauna Able To Grow That Large And Function??? And How The Fuck
Uhmm, How Exactly Were All Of Those Megafauna Able To Grow That Large And Function??? And How The Fuck

Or a size chart for Sauropods that wasn’t produced before 1970?

Uhmm, How Exactly Were All Of Those Megafauna Able To Grow That Large And Function??? And How The Fuck

Evolution likes to make things big.  It tries this all the time.  Whenever there’s a plentiful food source and enough space, things just get bigger and bigger.

The largest animal to have ever lived is alive right now.  It’s the blue whale.  And it’s truly a masterpiece of evolution’s drive to Go Bigger.

Uhmm, How Exactly Were All Of Those Megafauna Able To Grow That Large And Function??? And How The Fuck
Uhmm, How Exactly Were All Of Those Megafauna Able To Grow That Large And Function??? And How The Fuck

HOW THIS HAPPEN.

Basically, because they live in the ocean, space isn’t really an issue for them, and thanks to buoyancy, neither is their frankly ALARMING weight.  The only real limit to their size is chemistry – whether they can possibly metabolize enough energy fast enough to stay alive at their size.  Blue whales are estimated (having, for obvious reasons, never been measured in one piece) to be able to reach over 200 tons.  As an average weight.  Fluctuating with their feeding season.  This was for a 98 foot long whale.  The longest whales ever measured were 110 feet and 109 feet, both females.  (Males tend to be slightly shorter, but heavier at any given length).

A blue whale can hold over 90 tons of food and water in its mouth.

They need 1.5 million kilocalories of food per day.

Blue whales are MASSIVE.

They are not the LONGEST animal in the world, though, just the heaviest.  The longest is likely one of two things: the Lions Mane Jellyfish or the Bootlace Worm.  The longest recorded Lions Mane Jellyfish washed up on shore with tentacles measuring 120 feet.  It is unknown if they can be longer than this, but certainly possible given how fragile they are and the fact that this is just one that happened to get washed up on a beach.

The longest recorded bootlace worm SMASHES this record, but because of its stretchy body and the date of the recording (1864), the scientific accuracy is disputed.  It also washed up on shore and measured 180 feet.

How far off topic am I this time?

Anyway yes animals get big sometimes.  It helps deter predators when you’re too big to be hunted by anything.  The only natural predator of the blue whale is killer whales.  Regarding bears specifically, Brown Bears are in far more trouble than Black Bears because the Brown Bear line trends toward going bigger, which makes them easier targets for humans, while Black Bears have evolved to be shy and stealthy and avoid human contact.  As a result, Brown bears are far larger, but far more likely to be driven to extinction by humans.  Nature functions just fine if it’s left alone.  We just ruin everything we touch.  That’s why the largest individual crocodiles still living right now are the ones that have learned to avoid humans at all costs: conservation laws have not protected crocodiles from poaching long enough for them to get really, really big, even though we have significant historical records of crocodiles larger than what we generally see now.  At least some of those records are considered to be reliable and put a couple extant crocodile species well over 20 feet – some over 22.  The largest reliably measured crocodile was Lolong, a Saltwater crocodile in the Philippines who measured 20 feet 3 inches and died a few years ago.

And Argentavis magnificens was able to fly because it was designed to.  Even with a massive 24 foot wingspan, it only weighed around 175 pounds, because birds have very lightweight skeletons.  As impressive as the size was,

Uhmm, How Exactly Were All Of Those Megafauna Able To Grow That Large And Function??? And How The Fuck

a living bird of that size probably weighed about as much, if not a bit less, than the man standing next to it.  The surface area of its wings would have been sufficient to keep it in the air, mostly by gliding the way you see large modern birds of prey do.  It would have resembled a condor or vulture, just much larger.

Flying to New Heights With the Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission

A mission studying Earth’s magnetic field by flying four identical spacecraft is headed into new territory.

image

The Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, or MMS, has been studying the magnetic field on the side of Earth facing the sun, the day side – but now we’re focusing on something else. On February 9, MMS started the three-month-long process of shifting to a new orbit.

image

One key thing MMS studies is magnetic reconnection – a process that occurs when magnetic fields collide and re-align explosively into new positions. The new orbit will allow MMS to study reconnection on the night side of the Earth, farther from the sun.

image

Magnetic reconnection on the night side of Earth is thought to be responsible for causing the northern and southern lights.

image

To study the interesting regions of Earth’s magnetic field on the night side, the four MMS spacecraft are being boosted into an orbit that takes them farther from Earth than ever before. Once it reaches its final orbit, MMS will shatter its previous Guinness World Record for highest altitude fix of a GPS.

To save on fuel, the orbit is slowly adjusted over many weeks. The boost to take each spacecraft to its final orbit will happen during the first week of April.

image

On April 19, each spacecraft will be boosted again to raise its closest approach to Earth, called perigee. Without this step, the spacecraft would be way too close for comfort – and would actually reenter Earth’s atmosphere next winter!

image

The four MMS spacecraft usually fly really close together – only four miles between them – in a special pyramid formation called a tetrahedral, which allows us to examine the magnetic environment in three dimensions.

image

But during orbit adjustments, the pyramid shape is broken up to make sure the spacecraft have plenty of room to maneuver. Once MMS reaches its new orbit in May, the spacecraft will be realigned into their tetrahedral formation and ready to do more 3D magnetic science.

Learn more about MMS and find out what it’s like to fly a spacecraft.
