In Another Life

dear rue, don’t hate me 🥺 @rueclfer full fic to the angst drabble i wrote the other day, which can be found here; angst drabble

synopsis; he’d never be yours in this life, but maybe in another he could be. (dabi/touya x reader)

cw; angst, allusions and mentions of character death, fem!reader imagined but not exclusively stated can be read as gn!reader, quirkless reader, mentions of endeavor (yes i consider this man a warning), i think that’s all

word count; 1.7k

please don’t use, copy, or steal my writings thank you and enjoy 😊

“fuyumi invited me to dinner this weekend. she says everybody will be there. your mom, natsuo, and shoto. i think he might also be there, she didn’t say but i could tell by the look on her face. i told her i’d think about it,” you sit on the uncomfortable plastic chair in the bland white room.

the only sounds are the beeping and the raspy shutters of the life support machine that is keeping touya alive.

“do you think i should go?” you're silent as you wait for him to answer. fuyumi had told you that you would be the only one to visit him today, meaning he’d be able to answer you if he wanted.

“that’s up to you.” his voice is raspier than you’ve ever heard it before, you know it’s because he’s burned his vocal cords beyond repair.

“i don’t think he likes me very much. he always glares at me,” you explain and watch the roll of his eyes as he lets out a scoff.

“i’m serious, he never liked me as a kid because i’m quirkless. i’m pretty sure it’s still the same. i know he only puts up with me because your mom forces him to since i’m friends with all of you four.” you assume the garbled sound that leaves him is a laugh and it makes you chuckle in turn.

“i miss those days,” he sighs and you smile nostalgically, as a kid you’d go to his house after school some days and nearly every weekend to play with him, fuyumi and natsuo.

you were their neighbor and the same age as fuyumi who you quickly became friends with, and grew incredibly close to touya. so close that you developed a crush on him at five years old, though you’d never admit to it.

“yeah,” you sigh while looking over to the machine encasing him, “me too.”

it’s been almost two weeks since you last went to visit touya, work has been keeping you busy lately and you’re finding it hard to make time for him.

you have tomorrow off and have made the plans to go see him, fuyumi already knows and is making sure nobody else will go see him so that you can have the whole day with him.

it’ll be nice, you think, to see him and spend an entire day without having to worry about leaving if his family shows up.

you love them you do, but sometimes it’s nice to just be with touya.

“you should tell him how you feel,” fuyumi’s voice sounds from your phone as you make your way into the facility where touya is.

“does everybody know?” you groan out, stepping to the check in desk and writing your name down.

“everybody except him,” fuyumi laughs, “you’ve been in love with him since we were five it’s not hard to miss.”

you scoff, of course it isn’t. it’s not like you hid it, but admitting it isn’t as easy as it seems. you have no idea whether he feels the same, and the fear that he might not make it out of the facility is what keeps you from telling him.

“i’m just scared yumi, what if he doesn’t feel the same?” you pause to take a breath as you enter the elevator.

“what if he does?” she responds,

“ok well what if he doesn’t get better? i don’t want to get my heartbroken,” you explain through a heavy sigh.

“and what if this is the push he needs to get better?” she’s always been the logical one.

“i’ll think about it, but i’m here. i’ll talk with you later,” you say your goodbyes as you approach his room.

you smile as his eyes flicker towards you when you enter the room.

“i know you can’t have any but i brought soba to eat. figured it might cheer you up a bit since it is the day before your birthday.” he rolls his eyes and scoffs as you sit in the uncomfortable plastic chair.

“i’m sorry i haven’t come to see you, works been keeping me busy.” you sigh and take a bite of the soba you brought.

he only grunts in return and you sit in silence for a while.

“will you be here tomorrow?” his voice startles you out of your thoughts.

“i might come after your family, i don’t want to be around your father.” you explain and he makes a humming sound.

the silence stretches another few minutes before he coughs violently, you’re by his side immediately to check if he’s alright.

“are you okay? i mean obviously you aren’t but i fuck i’m bad at this.” you ramble on and he chuckles deeply, or at least he tries to.

“i’m as good as i can be.” his eyes meet yours and you feel your knees weaken. his eyes were always your favorite.

“do you want me to go?” you ask, he gives a slight shake of his head.

“just sit with me for a while.” he whispers and you do.

you spend the rest of your visit rambling to him about the last two weeks and he listens in silence, giving an answer here and there.

he’s asleep by the time your visit is over and you smile softly at his sleeping form.

you stand to leave, leaning over the machine to get a look at his face.

“goodnight touya, i love you.” you whisper and gather your stuff to leave.

you miss the twitch of his eyelids as you walk out.

you see him the next day for his birthday, surrounded by his family. and although his father is there too, you’re able to manage being around him for touya.

it’ll be another week before you can see him again, so you enjoy the time you have today.

the night of his birthday, you dream of another life.

in the dark of the night, when the people sleep and the city is quiet, on a rooftop under the clear sky, two figures sit and watch the stars.

“if you had the chance to go back and redo things, would you change anything or keep it all the same?” a whispered voice carries in the wind, a chill running through his veins.

there’s a soft humming sound that filters in the air, an acknowledgment of the question and his head tilts as he processes your words. the stars blink at him in anticipation, silently awaiting his answer.

“i don’t know.”

his voice is meager, afraid to speak any louder and scare you away again. but it’s clearer than you’ve ever heard it before.

“do you?”

such a simple question yet the answer is anything but.

he draws in a breath at your silence.

“i think i would change one thing.”

a pause, he turns to look at you.

“i’d fighter harder not to lose you.”

he smiles softly and gently tucks a strand of hair behind your ear. you continue to stare at the sky, afraid it’ll all disappear if you move.

“y/n… you lose me no matter what you do.”

you sigh and his touch is gone just as quickly as you felt it.

glancing to where he sits, you choke back a sob, he’s already fading as the light from the sun starts to rise.

“i know.” you feel like you can’t breathe as the words force their way past your lips.

he smiles. it’s broken.

“i’m sorry.” your heart breaks as he speaks, you’re starting to forget what he sounds like, it’s been so long.

“i love you.” you reach for him, hoping, no praying, that you can touch him, feel him one last time before he slips from your grasp again.

“i know.” he never says it back and you know it’s because your brain can’t imagine what the words sound like on his lips, never having heard them before, even if you confessed while he was alive.

not even your dreams can bring you solace as you watch him fade completely, your body jolting upright in the sweat soaked sheets you lay.

the tears are steadily streaming down your face, you do nothing to stop them as the sun crests over the horizon and the light sneaks into your room.

“why’d you have to go?”

there’s no answer. there’s never been one, but you’ve always known his motivations.

“i had another dream of you last night,” you sit cross legged on the grass, the wind blowing softly in response to your words. as if filling the silence in place of an answer.

“this time we sat on the roof watching the stars, like we did when we were kids,” you sigh, the tombstone across from you reading touya’s name.

‘dabi’ is written in smaller letters beneath, your idea as you knew he would’ve liked that over touya but his father insisted on using his given name.

it had taken fuyumi, natsuo, and shoto just to get him to agree, but you knew touya would be happy wherever he was.

“i told you i loved you in this one, before it ended the same as the others. with you fading away as the sun rose, and me jolting awake with tears streaming down my face.” it’s just you visiting him today, and somehow it feels better than visiting him in the facility.

he passed away after his birthday, a couple days before you had the chance to see him again. you got the call from shoto, fuyumi too distraught to be able to tell you.

hearing the words from shoto’s monotone voice made it hurt worse than you imagine hearing it from fuyumi’s voice would’ve.

“i still can’t believe you’re gone. it’s been a year now, it feels like just yesterday you were turning twenty-four,” your voice shakes as your arms wrap around yourself.

“i never thought there’d be a time where i was older than you,” the tears don’t come as quickly anymore but they still come.

“i miss you so much touya. why’d you have to do it?” you plead as if the stone would provide an answer.

you sigh heavily and stand, dusting yourself off to leave.

“i love you,” the wind that blows is warm, a gentle caress around your body and you imagine it as his arms wrapping you in a hug. a silent i love you too, his final comfort to you.

your eyes blur as you leave, you don’t visit him again after that.

the bar was packed. compared to your first day of work there, the amount of people crammed into the dim lit space had basically tripled. even though, the band wouldn't go on for a couple hours, the place was already bustling with excitement. rumi, whose shift had begun an hour prior to yours, was already running around passing out drinks and taking orders, while keigo had taken to bartending for tonight. he spotted you and took his hand off the tab he was pulling beer from to wave you over. hesitantly you pushed through the crowds and made your way behind the bar.

"don't you clean up nice, ace."

he lazily slung an arm over your shoulder and pulled you into a quick side hug. you weren't bothered by the physical contact, keigo had already seemed like the touchy type on your first day. not in a bad way, though. he was just very extroverted. you were actually more put off by the nickname.

"ace?" you looked back at him – an eyebrow raised and your head tilted to the side. he laughed, finishing up the beer and setting it down for one of the patrons at the bar. when he turned back to you, his laugh had turned into a cheeky grin. before keigo could offer up his reason for the nickname, rumi jumped in.

"he gives all staff nicknames, it's a whole thing." you hadn't even seen, when she had rejoined you, but she was on her way back on the floor with a full try, just as quickly. "be glad, that yours isn't bird themed."

rumi left without another word and you turned back to keigo. "you seriously give everyone a nickname?" he shrugged, grabbing the ticket one of the servers had just put in. "yep." he grabbed a bottle of tito's from the shelf and poured it over a glass of ice. "it's more fun that way." that seemed to be the extent of his answer, before he added one more thing. "everyone, except rumi that is."

you watched her weave through the masses, confidently carrying the tray to her tables. on your first day, you had been a little intimidated by her. she was taller than you, by quite a margin. you were pretty sure, that she at least matched keigo in terms of height. that was only half of it, though. not only did she exude a confidence, you could only hope to ever match in your dreams, but she was ripped. like really fucking ripped. she had worn a compression shirt the other day, that had shown off every single rippling muscle in her upper body. and again today, in a loser shirt, you could spot the way her bicep and forearm tensed under the drink tray, with every little movement.

"why?" you asked; your eyes still following the woman's movements. keigo stood next to you, his eyes following where you were looking. "let's just say, i can still feel the bruise from the day i tried." a snort escaped you, involuntarily. mocking your boss on your second day of work had not exactly been on your to-do-list for today, but keigo didn't seem to mind. he just accepted your reaction and flashed you another cheeky smile.

"by the way, if you do mind the nickname, let me know."

"i don't."

he nodded before turning to the side to hand a young woman her vodka cranberry. with a wink and an almost unnoticeable flash of his tongue between his teeth, he wished her a fun night. you felt even more affirmed in your assumption, that he just flirted with everyone under the sun. you hushed to the back of house and tied the black apron around your waist. rumi had been sweet enough to already put in a little notepad and pen for you, so that you could quickly get back onto the floor and start taking orders. when you got back behind the bar, rumi quickly went over your section with you. she also told you that keigo would let you both take a break during the band's set, so you could enjoy it outside of working.

for the next two hours, the two of you took care of your tables, but whenever you passed each other, you couldn't resist quipping about customers being idiots or just throwing each other air kisses. you had worked in customer service before, though by now, that had been almost half a year ago, but you had never had an infant connection with any coworker the way you had wit rumi. it was only your second day of working together, but the way your shared laughters echoed over the loud atmosphere of the black wing, most customers would probably assume, that you had known each other all your lives. there was something refreshing about being around her and keigo. even though, all three of you were working, you felt an ease that was more akin to a hangout between friends. having pretty much only tomura to talk to – and your mother, though that was an entirely different thing – had taken more of a toll on you, than you would have liked to admit.

"you, all right, ace?"

keigo playfully flicked your forehead with his pointer. ripped from your thoughts, your hand moved to the point of impact. he hadn't flicked hard enough for it to hurt, but you still looked up at him. he watched your brows furrow and your lips purse, clearly amused by your expression.

"what was that for?" you crossed your arms in front of your chest, tilting your head upwards to look at him even closer. his grin didn't falter for one second. "you were spacing out."

"oh shit, i'm sorry." your eyes suddenly found the ground below you much more interesting than keigo's face. he just laughed. if you hand't felt like he had just caught you red-handed, you would have been offended. "don't worry. you're not in trouble." you could hear in his voice, that he was suppressing yet another laugh. "just worried about ya, ace."

you blinked a few times unsure of what to make of him seeming so genuine, but went back to work pretty quickly. he kept his eyes on you for a bit, as if to wait for your response. after a few seconds you just shrugged it off with a perfectly practiced 'it's fine, just a bit nervous'. he figured you had meant the concert and the crowd that had come along with it. considering it was your second shift, it made sense, that you would be nervous. you didn't feel the need to elaborate and he left you to serving drinks.

♪ ༘⋆ Drawn To You — T.todoroki Smau

the bar got very crowded, very quickly. compared to just a few hours ago, when you thought, that it had already been full, it was now packed. you were aware that lov had amassed quite the following online, which was in big parts thanks to tomura's already huge twitch following. but you would have never guessed, that so many people would squeeze into the bar to see them play live. you overheard conversations here and there, as you made your way back from the floor to rumi. most were talking about how excited they were. some spoke about how well they liked the new ep; others of course discussed how much better or worse it held up compared to their older music. here and there you even heard comments that went something like 'oh my god, dabi is so hot! i can't wait to see him play!' or 'i hope tomura notices me, i would literally die if he looked at me!' you snorted out a quiet laugh, as rumi leaned on the alcohol shelf behind you two. her eyes followed yours, watching the group of girls that was sipping for your brother and his fellow bandmate.

"looks like they're going on." she nodded toward the stage that was being lit by a singular spotlight.

keigo stood at the center of it, tapping lightly on the microphone in front of him. the shrill of the feedback, made you wince. keigo had noticed a couple people being put off by it and tried covering it up with an awkward laugh.

"give it up for lov!" he hadn't even finished the announcement before loud cheers already drowned out the sound of his voice. "performing their new ep 'disintegrate' for the very first time tonight!"

you doubted that anybody had been paying attention to keigo's words. right as he had finished up his introduction, the first of the band members had stepped on stage. lazily spinning his drumsticks in his hands, spinner passed keigo with a quick nod and took his spot behind the drums. he was followed by himiko skipping over to the right, where he keyboard was. even from as far away as you stood, you could see that it was plastered full with various stickers. from the moment himiko walked onto the stage, you could hear the clicking of a camera shudder and see multiple consecutive flashes coming from the crowd. ochaco was true to her word – taking pictures almost entirely exclusively of himiko. though to be fair, you would most likely do the same, if only to piss of tomura. speaking of, him and dabi came onto the stage last. both taking their place at the center, though dabi was a bit further to the left. they both slung their instruments over their shoulders, fine-tuning them before beginning to prepare for the first song of the set. you could barely hear them introduce themselves or their first song over the loud cheers that blared through the crowd. by the time the cheers and screams had died down a bit, they had played halfway through the first chorus and keigo had slipped back behind the bar.

"feel free to go up front, by the way." he pulled out a bottle of whiskey behind rumi and poured himself a glass. "talked to the owner and he said it's fine." he winked at the two of you earning himself a death glare from rumi and a deadpan expression from you. the feigned annoyance at your boss was short-lived, especially when rumi grabbed your wrist to pull the two of you through the crowd. you were sure, that she was going to get pushed back or at the very least get some nasty insults thrown at her, but most people you two passed were simply too intimidated by the woman to say a thing. that didn't save you from the salty looks cast your way. and yet, by the time they had finished the first song, you were at the very front, basically right in front of where dabi had positioned himself. when he noticed you standing in the front row, staring up at him, he threw you a cheeky smile. much to the dismay of tomura, he even added a little bass riff at the end of the song, finishing it off with a wink in your general direction. which of course, about ten other fans that stood around you two, decided, had been thrown at them. you were pretty sure, yourself, that he hadn't meant it for you specifically. rumi would have disagreed, if you had asked for her opinion, that is.

it felt like they were blasting through their songs. half an hour passed you by in a blink and suddenly they were halfway through with their set. you and rumi had gone back to the bar under the guise of at least working a little bit. (you were both standing on the bar counter dancing.) keigo had yet to complain, so you were just enjoying the moment for now. you didn't take note of the bright blue eyes trained on you, watching your every move. he hadn't even really wanted to, but he had glanced in your general direction and just noticed, that you looked like you were having the most fun out of everyone in this room. something about the way you just ignored everything around you and completely lost yourself, to the point that he was almost scared, that you would fall off the counter, kept drawing him in, even as he tore his eyes away from you to engage with the remaining crowd.

when the band got to their last few songs, rumi and you were sitting on the counter, exhausted from dancing. the two of you were laughing so hard, that you both struggled to catch your breath, which in turn only lead to the two of you laughing even harder. sitting on the counter had gotten you a couple of reprimanding looks from keigo, but he was glad, still, that the two of you were having fun. he stood behind the bar, leaning forward so he could easily turn his head sideways to look up at the two of you. the three of you remained like this for the rest of the show, with only keigo moving every once in a while, when someone ordered another drink. every now and again he would sigh.

"if only i had staff, i paid to make drinks." he still ended up pouring all the drinks himself, even shooing you away, when you had wanted to help him.

lov had just finished the final song of their encore, leaving the stage after bowing, even though the entire crowd was screaming for them to get back out. himiko was the only one who peeked her head out from back stage one last time. though only to throw up a piece sign and stick her tongue out for ochaco to take a picture. rumi and you were forced to go back to work pretty quickly after, when the crowd stormed the bar, obviously needing their post-concert refreshment. you fell back into the same rhythm from before, chitchatting with the two of them and bickering back and forth while swiftly finishing up all the orders.

rumi had left about two hours before the bar officially closed. technically, keigo had offered to send you home early as well, but you had just figured you would stick around and have tomura drive the two of you home. reluctantly he had accepted and let you help him out with closing. the bar was closed officially, but keigo had let the band stick around in the basement to come down from the show and have a little celebratory jam session.

you had no idea how it had happened, really, but out of nowhere ochaco and himiko had popped up in front of the bar counter. with the latter grabbing ur wrist and dragging you along with them to the basement. the room was very small and crammed to the brim with music equipment, a battered, old couch and a little pile of what you assumed to be jackets, pants and whatever else musicians apparently needed to change on a whim. spinner had claimed the couch for himself using his drumsticks to keep a haphazard beat. tomura was sitting to his right on the floor, his trusty electric guitar was plugged in, but he wasn't playing any of their songs just jamming to the rhythm his drummer was giving him. on spinner's right was dabi, who joined in here and there with a little bass riff, to harmonise with tomura. you were in awe that he could play laying on the floor with his legs up leaning on the basement wall. the three almost hadn't heard you come in, too focused on their fun little experiment. when ochaco let the door fall shut behind her, they all looked up.

"hey guys." spinner was the first to lift himself up and walk over to you with a welcoming smile on his face. "how'd you like it?" he was asking both you and ochaco, but it was clear that he meant pretty much only you. "i loved it." you replied immediately, recounting how amazed you had been by the variety of the songs they had played.

"we could tell." dabi piped in. he was grinning, too, but something about his expression seemed a lot more mischievous than spinner's. "you know, 'm surprised keigs let you guys dance up there." he chuckled. his eyes almost unnoticeable trailed up and down your body. the glance was fast enough for you to figure, that you had imagined it.

you grinned. "pretty sure, rumi would have done it regardless." "touché."

dabi looked at you one last time before turning back to his bandmates. "going for a smoke. anybody wanna join?" his eyes trailed the room, waiting for anybody to pipe up. they seemed to hang on you a little longer, than anybody else. you thought for a second. after having been stuck in the stuffy bar for hours, maybe a bit of fresh air would do you good. "i'll go." you finally said.

he nodded before leading the way to the backdoor that led to the back alley behind the bar. keigo had shown it to you once, since that was where all trash had to be disposed of at the end of the night, but he had also said, that he would never let anybody go there on his own. especially not at night. you understood why. it was a barely lit, narrow little alley; away from any type of busy street. especially at night, this alley was entirely deserted. dabi stood next to you, pulling a packet of cigarettes from his jeans' pocket. he tilted the packet toward you, waiting for you to take one. his brows knit together, when you didn't.

"just needed some air." "ah." he nodded placing the cigarette between his lips.

from his other jeans' pocket he pulled out a dark purple zippo lighter with some kind of stitch design on it. he flipped it open, watching as a tiny blue flame emerged. your eyes widened. you had never seen a lighter with a purely blue flame before. "cool, huh?" he grinned, bringing the flame close to his face to light the cigarette.

he took a long drag, purposefully blowing the smoke away from your face. you appreciated it, but you wouldn't have minded it either way. home had always smelled like smoke and nobody had bothered turning away from you, then. after one, two, three more drags he held the cigarette out for you to take. you hesitated. you hadn't smoked before and to be honest, you were a bit worried, that you would embarrass yourself with a coughing fit. you doubted that you could take the embarrassment, especially coupled with the smirk that you knew would be etched onto dabi's face. "no, thanks." you smiled. "no worries."

he continued to smoke.

"did you wanna cash in, what you were promised?"

"huh?"

he couldn't help but chuckle at the utter confusion displayed on your face. he crossed his bare, heavily tattooed arms in front of his chest. you didn't like the mischievous glint in the far right corner of his mouth. even only knowing him for as short as you did, you know that couldn't mean anything good.

"i mean, you were promised a kiss with the show." he shrugged.

the words had left his lips so nonchalantly, as if he had just told you how the weather was. he did however find your reaction hilarious. the way your eyes had widened, when your brain had put together what his words meant and how you had to physically stop your mouth from gaping open in utter shock. he couldn't stop grinning at how genuinely shocked you were.

"oh fuck off."

you tried your best to sound as deadpan, as you could, but you couldn't stop the grin from poking out through your sorry attempt at a blank expression. curse dabi and his damn infectious smile, you thought. he just laughed. he had obviously not meant anything by it, but he might have entertained the possibility of you actually agreeing, even if only for a split second.

"but seriously, you guys were amazing."

you beamed, recounting how awesome the experience had been. there was something about the real and raw excitement you showcased, that endeared him. you had such a genuinely kind way of speaking, when you talked about how great they had performed the songs and how you had enjoyed all the ad-libs dabi and tomura had bounced off of each other. you were soft, gentle in a way dabi wasn't familiar to and he felt strangely enveloped by the warmth of your excitement.

"… and that one solo you and tomu did during 'smokescreen' was so cool!"

"also, you sounded great by the way." your smile was so sweet, it almost ached him to look at you. "i didn't know you sang, too."

he just shrugged. "usually just do backing vocals. i sing main on two songs, though."

you knew which ones he was referring to. one was at least two years old and technically unreleased – you had only heard it, when tomu had played you the demo. and the second was 'blue', which you had noticed, they hadn't performed tonight. then again, a ballad like that probably wasn't suited for a show like that.

"you definitely should sing more." you nudged him lightly. "i mean, if you like to that is."

you backtracked a bit, having realized that might have come off a bit demanding. dabi didn't seem to think so, though.

"well, since you're asking, pretty."

he emphasized the pet name in a way that mad it clear, that it was meant to tease you a little. you decided to just ignore it. just like you ignored the way dabi's tongue played with the inside of his mouth before his face fell back into his usual cheeky grin.

he was just about to say something else, when a vibration came from the pocket of his jeans. he pulled out his phone and immediately his face went blank. for a split second there was something unreadable in his eyes, but it was gone as quick as it had shown up. his face was now stone cold. none of the playfulness from before was visible. the blue of his eyes, though still bright, was now ice cold as he stared at her.

"i gotta go." his voice was equally as cold.

before you could ask any type of question, he had already disappeared into the dark streets.

you were already a pretty light sleeper under normal conditions, so it wasn't surprising that the loud creaking of the floorboards woke you up in the middle of the night. at first you just assumed, that tomura had gotten up to get himself a glass of water and were ready to go back to sleep without a second thought. but something didn't feel right. the steps felt heavier, too heavy for someone who had just rolled out of bed.

immediately your chest tightened. thoughts raced to your head about who the intruder could possibly be. one thought in particular clung to you, but you refused to let yourself entertain it. everything rational within you screamed for you to text tomura and get both of your asses out of here. and yet, not a second later you had hushed across your room to hear the intruder better. your ear was glued to the door, trying to make out any sound.

there were only a few more creaks, followed by a heavy thud. the steps were a lot lighter now and the floorboards didn't creak anymore. it was safe to assume that the person had taken their shoes off. but why? if they had broken in, why would they bother taking their shoes off? you knew, you should be a lot more terrified, but for some reason you were just confused.

a deep breath escaped your lips before you slowly pressed down the door handle. this was a stupid decision. you knew full well, that you should have probably run the other way the moment you had heard any type of noise. the smartest decision would have been to climb out the window and use the little ledge on the window sill to climb over to tomura's room and wake him up. instead you gently pushed the door open and stepped into the pitch black living room.

you couldn't hear any steps. the sudden dead silence enveloped you like an eery, dark cloak. you had expected to see a figure move through the room, but there was none. there was no way you had imagined all of it, was there? from the door to your room, you could see the entire living room. to see the kitchen, though, you would have to round the corner, because the wall from the entry hallway that connected to the kitchen island blocked your view to it. there was a slight rustling sound again, followed by the fridge being opened? you'd never heard of people going through fridges, when breaking and entering, but in all fairness, in this economy, you couldn't blame them for trying. obviously they didn't know your brother well, though. if they did, they would know his fridge wasn't worth opening. there was never anything worthwhile in there, except for energy drinks, ice cream and half empty take-out containers if you were lucky.

"fuck's sake!" a deep voice hissed.

you were pretty sure now, that it was a guy, but you couldn't place the voice. that was much more relieving, that it should be, but a man you didn't know was very likely to be safer, than the ones you did know. still, you grabbed tomura's keys from the little bowl in the entry way – careful not to let the keychains dangle. you tiptoed over to the kitchen, the cold metal of the keys digging into your skin. you kept close to the wall, so he wouldn't see you, but by the time you reached the kitchen island, he was already walking back toward the living room. you could only hope, that he hadn't seen you yet. you pushed your body into the wall, as if that would make it swallow you.

he stopped walking. you decided to take that second to try and at least make out some features. he was dressed so dark, that his frame almost entirely blended into the pitch black background. he was wearing a hooded jacket, hiding any feature you would have otherwise maybe seen, beneath it. his arm shifted, at least that's what you assumed it was, since your eyes still hadn't gotten used to the dark. that proved unnecessary a second after, because his elbow hit the light switch. the sudden shift in lighting momentarily blinded you and somehow turned off the alarm signals, that should have told you to get the fuck out of there.

"not running off this time?" you jumped back hearing the playful tone of his voice.

blinking a few times to get used to the very bright light, you stared up at him. when you recognized who he was, you felt both relief that he wasn't some psycho killer and a little annoyed that he had obviously noticed you a bit ago and messed with you for whatever reason. you had been right about him wearing all black, though. his thick hooded jacket covered his pitch black hair almost entirely. it didn't however cover the shit-eating grin, that he was staring down at you with.

"to be fair, you were a strange man in my brother's apartment." you crossed your arms in front of your chest. "and i was in a towel."

"fair enough." he laughed pulling the hood of his jacket down.

even though you hadn't really looked at him, when you had bolted out of the room yesterday, you had seen his face a bunch online before. he had been everywhere together with the rest of lov, when their first single blew up. now that dabi's face was lit entirely, you could see the black ink snaking its way up his neck from below his jacket. there weren't any on his face, but he had more than enough piercings to make up for it. just from a quick glance you could see little silver balls adorning his right eyebrow, three more on the left side of his nose and he had snake bites. his black hair was tousled into every possible direction, sticking out in messy spikes. he was taller than you and a good bit broader, too, though that could just as well be the thickness of his jacket.

"didn't mean to wake you up, by the way." he unzipped his jacket and lazily dropped it onto the kitchen island. even though the hoodie that he was wearing under it was baggy and obviously intended to fit loosely, you could see the broad shoulders underneath it. the tattoos from his neck obviously continued under the collar of his hoodie.

"you're good." you smiled, awkwardly shifting your feet.

he just nodded and slumped onto the couch. you assumed that to have been the end of your conversation and where just about ready to leave, when he spoke up again. "i'm dabi by the way."

it was kind of funny that he felt the need to introduce himself, when you both knew, that you were aware who he was. maybe he just thought it was the polite thing to do.

"y/n." you said quietly. you weren't sure if tomura had mentioned your name. himiko had told you earlier tonight, that tomura had never mentioned you, so you probably were right to introduce yourself. dabi just hummed, resting his feet on the coffee table next to three open cans of monster and the bag of chips tomura had opened sometime before you had moved in. his eyes turned to you again, looking at you, almost as if he was trying to remember something.

"wait, i know you." you furrowed your brows looking back at him. "didn't you say you didn't like lov on twitter bout a week ago?"

if only you had taken the advice of the smarter part of your brain and climbed out the window when you had the chance. you laughed awkwardly, wishing you could be anywhere but here – preferably somewhere six feet under ground. and not right in front of the bassist of the band, you had publicly claimed hating, even though it had been for a joke. the whole thing had blown up completely with their vicious fans literally blowing up your phone with hate comments and threats. you remembered vividly that somehow dabi, of all people, had found your post and even commented. tomura had found the entire thing hilarious, because of course he did. but he had never mentioned to dabi that the person who had made that viral post, was his sister.

"i didn't actually mean that." you choked out an awkward laugh. dabi's head tilted to the side. he stared at you so intensely now, as if he are genuinely curious about the explanation. you just then noticed how brightly blue his eyes were. which was only accented with the black color that was smudged all around his eyes. and it looked like he was wearing black mascara as well. "i honestly just wanted to mess with tomu. never expected that shit to blow up the way it did."

he looked at you for a good second, as if he was processing what you had just said. and then he just straight up snorted out a laugh.

"so what i'm hearing is you don't actually think we suck?"

"didn't say that, did i?" you decided to be petty and mess with him a little. as payback for him messing with you earlier.

from the way his eyebrow raised, you assumed that he hadn't expected that answer.

"wait for real?"

you just shrugged, trying your best to keep a straight face. he kept his bright eyes on you, trying to gauge your expression for any sign if you were being serious or not. he gave up a few seconds after.

"come on, you're killing me here."

you laughed seeing how invested he seemed to be. it was kind of nice to see, how serious he was taking this, especially since you know how much the band meant to your brother. you decided to make him suffer no longer.

"i'm kidding." it was funny to watch the actual relief on his face. "most of your stuff's actually really good."

"just most, huh?" he leaned back on the couch very quickly switching to his grin from before.

you stared at him with a deadpan expression, which of course, he found even more amusing.

"obviously not what i meant." you rolled your eyes.

dabi let out a soft chuckle, still actively amused by annoying you. even though, he was sure, that you weren't actually as annoyed as you tried to look. and he would've been right. "you have a favorite?"

"hm?"

dabi grinned seeing your head tilt, not understanding what he wanted from you.

"favorite song, i mean."

the question left you more stumped, than it probably should have. you had been honest with dabi, you really did like all of their music. both the heavier rock songs they played and the very few slower songs they had – even their covers were usually very nice to listen to. even though, tomura usually asked you for your opinion the moment, they released anything, you had never really been able to pick a clear favorite. though you had been able to give him an answer earlier, that was usually heavily influenced by the way you were feeling on that particular day.

"don't think i could pick that easily." you shrugged. "but i've been listening to blue from the new ep a lot."

something lit up in his eyes, when you said that. it was subtle enough, thought for you to not really register it as out of the ordinary. dabi just hummed in response, not commenting on your choice at all. silence befell the two of you. the realization hit, that it was probably well over four am in the morning and though, tomura had the ability to sleep through five fire alarms blaring at the same time and would not be woken up by the two of you just talking, you should probably sleep at some point, if you wanted to at least pretend to pay attention in your 8am class.

"i should probably head back." you said, already turning on your heel, when dabi stopped you.

"hold on." he got up from the couch and was now standing barely two feet away from you. "give me your number."

"huh?" you couldn't help but stare at him for a couple seconds. the surprise on your face was palpable and probably really obvious, but you had genuinely not expected him to say that. especially not as demanding as he did. he just smiled, completely ignoring how you had reacted, which you were sure he was doing purposefully.

"you live here too, now. 's only fair, i give you a heads up when i'm coming over." he explained.

that made a lot of sense, actually. and it was really considerate of him. you quickly hushed into the kitchen and grabbed a little piece of paper from one of the cabinets. you quickly scribbled your number on it and handed it to him. he thanked you and haphazardly folded it before letting it slip into the side pocket of his pants. it didn't really occur to you, until then, that you had given an entirely strange guy your number, but you figured, that it wasn't that much of an issue, considering that tomura was close to him.

"it was nice to meet you, dabi." you smiled at him. " good night."

"night, y/n."

was thinking about aot, mha, and jjk and all the angst in the shows and the characters who’ve died and came up with this angst drabble. i apologize in advance. (could also apply to characters from other shows.) (was thinking a bit about jason todd here and some mcu characters.)

cw; angst but not too bad, allusions to character death (thinking about writing a whole fic on this, might turn it into a story don’t know what character i’d pick though.)

as usual please don’t use, copy, or steal my works. thank you and enjoy 😊

in the dark of the night, when the people sleep and the city is quiet, on a rooftop under the clear sky, two figures sit and watch the stars.

“do you ever think about redoing it all?” a whispered voice carries in the wind, a chill running through his veins.

there’s a soft humming sound that filters in the air, an acknowledgment of the question and a que to continue.

“if you had the chance to go back and do it again, would you? would you change anything?”

his head tilts as he processes your words. the stars blink at him in anticipation, silently awaiting his answer.

“i don’t know.”

his voice is meager, afraid to speak any louder and scare you away again.

“do you?”

such a simple question yet the answer is anything but.

he draws in a breath at your silence.

“i’m sorry.” your heartbreaks as he speaks, you’re starting to forget what he sounds like, it’s been so long.

“i love you.” you reach for him, hoping, no praying, that you can touch him, feel him one last time before he slips from your grasp again.

“i know.” he never says it back and you know it’s because you never confessed when he was alive so you can’t imagine what the words would sound like on his lips.

not even your dreams can bring you solace as you watch him fade completely, your body jolting upright in the sweat soaked bed you lay.

the tears are steadily streaming down your face and you do nothing to stop them as the sun crests over the horizon and the light sneaks into your room.

“why’d you have to go?”

there’s no answer, there’s never been one and you doubt you’ll get one in this lifetime.

Love and Drugs 🍃💛

Synopsis; Smoking buddy Denki has an important question to ask. Gender neutral reader

A/n; Behind the scenes of the Denki smau. lower case indented, please don’t use, steal, or copy my works.

the room is cast in a soft glow of the yellow colored LED lights, the bluetooth speaker on your dresser plays electric love as background noise. you sit at your desk finishing up the last of your homework after your last text to denki telling him to come over.

his signature knock rings through your dorm a few minutes later and a small smile makes its way onto your lips at the sound.

standing from the desk and crossing the room in a few strides, you open the door to find denki standing there with a sheepish smile on his face.

“i uh, picked these from outside before coming here,” he shrugs lightly, in one hand he holds a makeshift bouquet of flowers and in the other a small baggie filled with pre-rolled joints.

“thank you,” you smile and take the flowers from him and guide him into the room. “what’s the weed for?”

“stole it from sero to use as courage.”

you laugh, the sound like music to denki’s ears and he smiles softly.

“i figured we could climb to the roof and smoke some. also because i don’t want iida to catch me in here again,” he explains as he watches you set the flowers on your desk.

“hmm i thought you had something to ask me,” you tease and giggle as he flushes red and begins to stutter.

“uh i-i do, i just, well. i’m nervous,” he sighs and pouts slightly. you smile widely and wrap him in a hug.

“yeah denks we can go to the roof.”

ten minutes later, and the both of you are on the roof, sitting in the area you made specifically to smoke up here. the night sky is clear, the moon shining brightly with the stars twinkling behind it.

denki lights the first joint and takes a hit, for courage, before handing it to you. you share the first joint together in silence.

you know what he wants to ask, and you know your answers, you give him the time he needs to prepare himself and quietly wait for him to be ready.

“that time i thought you were booty calling me and i thanked toshi and sero,” he begins halfway through the second joint, his voice is soft but it still shocks you out of your thoughts.

your gaze floats from the stars to look at him sitting next to you. his eyes are red, a pink tint to his nose and cheeks. you hum and tilt your head, blowing the smoke in your lungs into the air above you.

“it was mostly a joke, but not really,” there’s a nervous chuckle as his gaze meets yours. “those two have been pushing me to tell you my real feelings since they found out about them.”

“denks,” you reach forward and grab his hand, his eyes follow your hand and he releases a shaky breath.

“i just never thought you felt the same, sure we flirt, like a lot. but i don’t know,” he shrugs, “you’re just so… you. smart, kind, attractive, out of my league for sure.”

“denki,” he squeezes your hand and you pause.

“i like you y/n, a lot. and i, i want to ask if you uh…” he takes a deep breath and makes eye contact again.

“will you go out with me?”

you smile at him.

“yes denki, i’ll go out with you.”

he beams and releases the breath he was holding.

“really?”

“yes you dork, really.”

“uh cool cool.”

you laugh and move to rest your head on his shoulder.

“uh does this mean i’m your boyfriend now?” you snort and nod.

“yeah denks it means you’re my boyfriend now.”

a few moments of silence go by and you shiver.

“c’mon let’s go back inside, it’s late.” he says and helps you stand up.

the two of you stand in front of the door to your dorm room, your hand in his as he stares at you.

“goodnight denks,” you smile at him, his head tilts to the side.

“can i kiss you?”

you nod. he leans in, head tilting down forwards you as his hands slide to your waist. your arms come up around his shoulders as he pulls your body in.

“this okay?”

“perfectly okay.”

your lips meet in a soft kiss and you melt in his arms. he pulls you in tighter and brings one hand to grab the back of your neck, holding you steady.

tilting your head, you slide your tongue across his bottom lip and the power in the building goes out as he short circuits.

you pull back with a gasp at the electric tingle in your mouth before laughing once you notice the dark hallway and the blank look on his face.

“kaminari!” iida’s voice rings out in the hallway and sero appears behind denki. you shake your head with a laugh and sero smirks knowingly.

“i’ll get him back to his dorm,” sero whispers.

“thanks,” you say before pressing one last kiss to denki’s cheek.

“goodnight denks.” you step into your dorm.

the last thing you hear before closing the door is sero’s chuckle and denki’s scattered mumbles, you fall asleep with a smile that night.

It wasn’t uncommon for you to not pay attention to your surroundings, especially when it came to crowed surroundings. You often got lost in the vibrations the rippled across the floor and climbed up to your ankles as what ever song boomed from the stage that you purposely stayed far away from. Crowds weren’t your thing, but they were certainly called to your friend who always seemed to rope you into coming to things like this. If Mina knew a lot of people would be some where, best believe she planned to be there first.

Your phone is set to silent and slid into your back pocket just as your finger pressed send on your last message to the ass hole you’d just met this morning. If his sheer disinterest and lack of human decency wasn’t enough to scrunch your nose in disgust, his teasing messages about paying attention to ‘the set’ surely were able to send a crippling anxiety up your spine. You knew from the moment you met him you didn’t like him one bit- and judging by the cocky glint in his eyes that were set on you as you look up to the stage, you knew you never would.

“I’m going to get some air.” You call to Mina, who was swaying to the music that had yet to start playing. “It’s getting stuffy in here.”

“What!? Jiros about to start playing.” You recognized the high pitched whine in her voice and recoiled as her hand wrapped around your wrist to keep you planted as you desperately wished to run. “They’re only playing 3 songs, we’ll head out after! She said she’d meet us in the side alley anyway! You’ll get your air later.”

You knew that even if you wanted to (which you did) Mina wouldn’t let you miss your friend’s debut as the new lead guitarist. You just couldn’t shake the burning feeling of disbelief and anger as your eyes scan the stage, locking Eyes briefly the the drummer. You felt guilty for wanting to ditch Jiros performance but after the very short interaction and the texts from the man still watching you- you wished you could.

-

Thirty minutes pass painfully slow, every song was followed with a talking segment that lasted far too long and every song seemed to play in for hours opposed to the few short minutes they actually echoed around you. On top of your clear distaste for one of the members onstage- the crowed had begun to go wild with every passing second. You’d been bumped, elbowed and stepped on more times than you could count before Mina excitedly pulled you away from the crowed and into the ally to meet Jiro.

“Babe what gives!?” She all but shrieks as the cold wind brushes over your warm skin. “She was killin it up there and you didn’t even bib your head!”

“Sorry Mina, I just-.” You pause, unsure of what exactly you should tell her. It wasn’t fair to Jiro that a man you met a single time could ruin your night and take away any effort you had to support her. “The drummer is a dick and I didn’t know he’d be here. It just put me in a sour mood to see him up there with our girl.”

“You know Bakugou?” She asks in bewilderment, her eyes glued to the door that opens beside where the two of you stood. “Well come back to this- Jiro!! You rocked!”

Jiro was the first of four people to join you in the ally, her smile the brightest you’ve ever seen, making your guilt grow further. You really should have ignored your personal feelings and supported her the way she deserved. She was glowing, and pulling Mina into and offering you a happy wave.

“Not a fan of our music?” The gravely voice you’d heard speak a single sentence laughs from beside you. With Mina gushing to the only other person you knew here, you had no choice but to turn to face him. “I thought we did pretty good up there, so why were you scowling?”

Your breath hitches as your head turns, he was far too close for comfort and it offered you the perfect view of his very sweaty tshirt that held his crossed arms. You can’t help but take a step back, moving your eyes from his chest to meet his eyes quickly. Just like before, he seemed absolutely uninterested in your presence dispute is attempt at getting a rise out of you.

“Because your presence makes me sick.” The shaky undertone of your voice was evident, and it made his smirk grow even further. “You’re an ass, and frankly if I knew you’d be here I’d have stayed home.”

“A nameless face in the crowd wouldn’t be missed anyway, extra.” His voice was wrapped dangerously with arrogance driven venom, and it made your neck burn to hold eye contact. “The nerd sent me the money you owed me.”

“You’re welcome, by the way.” Finally, you find the courage to cross your own arms and glare at him. “You didn’t deserve a single penny.”

“Am I supposed to thank you for replacing the shit your dumb ass damaged?” The wind blows around you, picking up scattered pieces of trash as he waits for an answer he knew he wasn’t getting. “Curious why he paid your debt though, the guy can’t pull so I know you aren’t dating the guy.”

“For your information jackass, he has a girlfriend and has for a while.” If there’s one thing you’d put your sudden nerves away for, it would be to defend someone as kind and sweet as your neighbor. “He paid for it so I wouldn’t tell my dad what you do for a living. Again- you’re welcome.”

The others have begun to make their way toward the two of you, happy smiles and upbeat conversation traveling between them as your hate filled conversation with their friend remains obvious to them. You weren’t sure if he’d told any of his band mates how he knew you or why you’d been staring holes into his head during the performance, but you were sure none of them were aware of your fathers career or how easily you could ruin the cocky blondes beside you.

“The hell would I care what your dad thinks?” It’s sad to admit but you enjoy the fact that he’s unaware of how easily you could get him in legal trouble. You have half a mind to tell him, but he opens his mouth before you can. “You aren’t the only person who knows a police officer.”

“How-?” Your friends look between you, worried and confused glances shared between you and Bakugou as your mouth hangs open. Did Izuku tell him? “Did-?”

“Don’t think that you could ever put me in a position to ask you for a favor, including keeping your mouth shut.”

four years of no contact. it’s been four years since the two of you laid eyes on each other, yet that never stopped the ceaseless thoughts. after splitting to focus on your careers, you thought you would never see him again. it seemed the universe was aching to prove you wrong.

the piedmont.

it was a name you hadn’t heard in the long time you’d been away from home. you would often find yourself looking back onto the shared experiences held within those four walls. reminiscing in hopes of bringing any form of semblance of home back to the forefront of your mind.

now here you were, finally settled back into the confines of your own house, in your own country, in your own town. you found your career to be a blessing, but nothing beat the comfortability of your own room and your own bed.

you could practically hear the shrill voices of your friends already, celebrating the return of your coveted friend group. you had to admit, it was difficult being so far; but it wasn’t just you. it seemed the stars had finally aligned with the wishes and whispered pleading that came from the group of you. you couldn’t remember the last time you all had your feet on the same soil. yet somehow, now, you could finally look upon the faces of all those you held dear in person, instead of over the phone. sincerely, it felt like a cosmic hand had lowered itself to push you all together again.

including bringing back the one person you tried to keep locked permanently out of your racing mind.

hitoshi.

stupid fucking hand.

there was no hatred harbored in your heart toward your ex. if anything, your relationship was teetering on the border of something amiable. in a way, this was frustrating. typically a breakup creates some sort of tension, augments some sort of hatred. unfortunately, shinsou was someone who kept his nonchalance in check, making it difficult to loathe the person he was after the separation. often times, you wished he wouldn’t have made everything so easy. holding contempt for him would be easier than the complete neutral feeling you had toward him that settled within you.

neither of you made the effort to keep in touch. you broke up, went your separate ways, and kept those ways separate. until now, of course.

the finishing touches of your look finally came together, and you dissociatively stared back at your reflection.

maybe he won’t show…?

you aimlessly tapped your finger on the bathroom counter that you found yourself leaning on. repeatedly tapping, tapping, tapping, until you had to forcefully pull yourself from the solid grasp of your overthinking.

who cares if he’s there? we’re cool. him and i are cool. we’re friends. stop freaking out.

pulling yourself together, you placed each strand of hair in its rightful position, smoothed what wrinkles you could from your outfit, and turned on your heel out of the bathroom. one foot in front of the other. until you reached your front door and finally hustled yourself out of the house.

tonight was about seeing your favorite people. tonight was not about worrying over a guy you dated. you might’ve been exes, but you were still friends. somewhat.

the buzzing that came from your phone in your hand caught your attention as you carefully locked the door behind you.

⎯⎯⎯⎯

bright neon letters shone in front of you, illuminating the features on your anticipated expression. katsuki’s car parked a few spaces away gave you the indication that the others were definitely waiting for you inside. the moment you stepped through the door of the building your senses were met with music on high volume, voices reverberating, bodies bustling, and ten pairs of eager eyes. it wasn’t hard to pick them out of the crowd. it never was.

your feet were barely able to carry you to where your friends stood, before you were met with their expected clamor.

“oh my god!” a voice sprung in your ear, bringing a wide smile to the canvas of your face. your arms were quick to reciprocate the hug uraraka had engulfed you in, giving her a tight squeeze that said ‘i missed you too’.

you gave this same treatment to the rest of your friends, giving one hug after another; saying words of greeting to whoever found themselves in your embrace.

it was strange how each person seemed to look the exact same as the last time you saw them, yet, sporting aspects you had yet to witness first hand. it made you feel better knowing the people you grew up with hadn’t changed too much. adulthood made your friends before you glow in a radiance that suited them well.

“you look good,” hanta expressed, draping an arm around your shoulders, “finally found a sense of style, i see.”

his smirk didn’t do well from deterring the playful hit you landed on his abdomen, “i’ve always had style, asshole.”

you found yourself, moments later, with a drink in your hand and a smile still stubbornly adorning your face as you watched the people surrounding you catch up as if no time had passed.

denki still had the same sense of humor that made your face hurt, and it was showcased perfectly as kirishima retorted the banter with ease. the feeling of nostalgia ran high; everyone was finally back and you couldn’t have felt more comfortable than in this moment.

the group of you huddled around a small standing table a good distance from the bar, leaning on each other for stability.

“is shinsou not coming?” izuku asked through the noise that filtered through the air. a few shared glances between the eleven of you ended in awkward side eyes pointed in your direction.

“stop looking at me like that,” you chuckled out.

it wasn’t a foreign notion to your friends that shinsou was a touchy subject. you tried time and time again to reassure that ya’ll were okay with each other. yet, even still, talk of shinsou was treated like taboo if you were in the vicinity. it was mainly to accommodate you, which you thought was a sweet gesture.

a few awkward laughs permeated through the group.

your eyes rolled slightly, “guys, really, it’s okay to talk about him. i’m not going to explode if i hear his name.”

“you sure about that?” katsuki retorted as he stared at you over the rim of his cup, one of his brows arched.

midoriya landed a soft jab into bakugou’s side, causing the blonde to jump with a frustrated grunt. you watched the two silently mouth profanities to each other, eliciting a giggle from your throat.

jirou grabbed your empty hand from where her and denki stood across you, “we just don’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything,” her thumb caressed the back of your hand gently. she was always so careful with you, so attentive, “i wouldn’t imagine talking about your ex isn’t very thrilling.”

“it’s thrilling for toshi,” denki blurts, “y/n is his favorite topic, actually.”

kaminari laughed proudly at his own words while the rest of the group laughed along with him. you chuckled awkwardly, letting your gaze fall to the lacquered wood that your fingers mindlessly traced shapes into. you knew hitoshi well enough to remember his tendencies, but even so, you weren’t particularly excited to learn whether he ever got over you after all these years. you had tried your best to move on and create something for yourself without letting him cloud your mind, and you hoped he was able to find the same path. according to denki, however, it seemed shinsou hadn’t let go quite yet.

or maybe denki was joking and you were mistakenly taking his words to heart. either way, why should you care? it wasn’t your problem if hitoshi had left things in the past or not. you and him hardly talked anyhow. what he grappled with in his own time was his responsibility, and you weren’t going to worry yourself over something you had left behind years prior.

“this conversation is not passing the bechdel test,” toga sighed.

you nodded your head in agreement, silently pleading for any kind of topic change, ”uh, how is the short film coming along?”

ochako and himiko beamed brightly at your question.

“our team is great,” ochako began, suddenly ripe with excitement, “the filming process has been so fun because the actors actually love being apart of the project —“

“unlike last time,” toga playfully interrupted.

uraraka rolled her eyes, intertwining her arm with the blonde’s and turning back to you.

“do you think you could take some photos for us again?” she questioned with big eyes, “we want some promo shots and a picture for the poster.”

you cracked a smile, grateful that your friends trusted you with this task. last time you helped them was during the beginning of both your careers, and now, the three of you had grown so much, “of course i will.”

the abruptness of denki’s sudden excited movements jarred you out of the moment you had happily sunk into.

“shinsou, over here!”

it’s almost as if something otherworldly pushed your head in his direction. without meaning to, almost completely subconsciously, you quickly looked over your shoulder to find his brooding eyes already locking intently with yours. even though four years had passed, and even though he stood halfway across the crowded bar, he still looked the same as the day you left.

you should look away. you know you should. but, the way you watched shinsou visibly stop in his tracks, watched his demeanor instantly change almost as if to adjust to your presence, had your eyes glued to the boy. you were so lost in your stare that you almost didnt notice monoma pop out from behind him, annoyingly pushing hitoshi to where the rest of you resided.

you swiftly turned your gaze away and back to your friends who were watching you closely. embarrassingly so.

“way to be nonchalant,” hanta said quietly in your ear. you shot him a glare and he was quick to back off after letting out a chuckle.

“don’t worry guys,” neito said from behind you as the pair neared the group, “the fun has finally arrived,” you could practically hear his stupid smirk. everyone let out a collective groan, wishing he would crawl back into the dank hole he most definitely derived from.

but you didn’t dare turn back, especially not when you could feel hitoshi standing directly behind you, virtually blocking you from turning to leave.

monoma joined the rest of you, slipping himself between denki and sero, yet shinsou didn’t move. his figure stayed put, standing comfortably in your shadow.

should i say something?

you watched the others banter about while it took far too long for you to convince yourself to greet him from where he stood behind you. when you finally did, turning your head over your shoulder, his eyes were already locked with yours.

has he just been staring at the back of my head?

“hey,” you said through the noise filtering through the bar, giving him an awkward smile.

shinsou shot a smile back, taking your spoken word as his sign to move his feet that felt glued to the floor from the moment he walked in, “hey.”

hitoshi took the barely open spot next to you, keeping his hands snug within his jean pockets. the silence between the two of you was suffocating — palpable. yet in that suffocation, was a comfort you had been without for four years. you were ashamed to say you missed it, even. you both watched the others as they engaged in conversation, but neither of you spoke; only listened.

“i’m going to the bar,” hitoshi said to you, leaning his body into yours to grab your attention, “want something?” he asked, pointing to the empty drink you held tightly in your hand.

you stared at the glass, not quite able to tell if you were glad it was empty or wished you could will it back to fullness.

your head nodded, “uh, yeah…sure.”

“you, uh,” he raised a brow, “wanna come with me?”

maybe it was how crowded the bar was, or how loud everything had suddenly become, but hitoshi seemed closer than before and you felt your breath stop short in your throat.

all you could muster was a single nod of your head, which was enough for him to take the lead with you close behind him.

reaching the bar, you ordered your drinks as you made yourself comfortable next to him.

“since when are you a beer guy?” you ask with a slight chuckle.

hitoshi shot back a grin, “since i have to drive home.”

“you came with monoma right?” you asked, remembering how they walked in together. shinsou nodded his head, “couldn’t you make him drive?”

you both looked over to where the rest of the group stood across the room. monoma was interjecting into every conversation, loud as usual as he sipped on the drinks of your friends.

“you’re joking, right?”

a laugh slipped from your mouth, “yeah, i don’t even know why i asked.”

he looked over at the drink that rested on the wood in front of you — the drops of condensation slowly making its way to stain the surface. shinsou watched as you slowly circled the rim of the glass with your finger.

“who’s driving you home?”

you turned to look him the in the eye for the first time since taking your place at the front bar, “me,” you replied.

the way he raised a single brow at your word elicited a roll from your eyes, “do i need to take that away from you?” he asked, a smirk painting his face.

“shut up,” you replied with a scoff, turning your head to hide the smile that slowly formed on your lips.

this felt natural — felt good. you were ashamed to say how much you missed talking with him like this. the casualness of it all brought a comfort to your soul.

“if you need a ride, i can drive you.”

why can’t i stop fucking smiling?

“i won’t,” you stated, meeting his gaze once again, “need a ride, that is. uh…thanks, though.”

the interaction ended as quick as it started; silence radiating between the two of you. shinsou kept his eyes trained on you as you looked away, losing yourself in thought once more.

“so,” he shimmied himself closer to your figure, keeping his elbows planted firmly on the bar. well, as firmly as he could considering his nerves were shot just being beside you again.

you giggled without meaning to, “so.”

how long had you been standing here? what really lasted seven minutes felt like three hours.

“you look different,” he instantly thought to mend his wording when you shot him a side eye, “good different. you look really good.”

“you look the same.”

a chuckle you knew far too well flooded your ears, “that means i’ve still got it. i knew my youthful glow was noticeable,” he laughed again when you rolled your eyes, “i can let you in on my skincare routine if you want.”

“and you’re still a smart ass, too. good to know,” he could tell you were messing with him by how wide your grin was. he could never forget the way your face glowed when you laughed. he always saw it in his head, but he was grateful to see it in person again.

“what’ve you been up to?” hitoshi turned his body so he could face you completely, leaning his side against the hardwood.

“denki told me you’ve been good at keeping up with that sort of thing,” you eyed him with a subtle grin.

“what sorta thing?”

good to know he still hadn’t stopped doing the ‘playing stupid on purpose’ act, “me.”

you giggled to yourself when he bowed his head with a dramatic sigh.

“first of all,” he started, “believing that ass hat is actually crazy. kudos to you for trusting a single word out of his mouth, you are so brave.”

you now turned your body to face shinsou completely, mimicking the way he stood, “is there a second of all?”

“do you want there to be?”

your shoulders shrugged and you still couldn’t wipe the smile from your face; your cheeks were starting to hurt, “maybe,” you responded.

hitoshi nodded his head slowly, taking in your features with a smirk resting comfortably on his face, “do you keep up with what i’ve been doing?”

“please,” you scoffed, “i have much better things to do with my time,” you playfully rolled your eyes and he took a swig of his drink, “i mean, it’s hard to not know what you’re up to when your name is in every headline right now,” you answered honestly.

“oh, so you are keeping up,” he wore a disgustingly shit eating grin, “that’s cute.”

“don’t even with me, stalker.”

another silence settled in the air between you and hitoshi. you looked away from him, opting to watch your friends as they kept a conversation going. toga was elaborately telling some sort of story which had kirishima hunched over with laughter. you watched them as shinsou watched you — admiring the way your lips pouted, the swoop of your nose, the way your eyelashes fluttered when you blinked.

you weren’t oblivious to the way his eyes were glued to you. he had always done this.

“what?” you asked, cocking your head as you caught his gaze with yours.

“nothing,” the way he stared at you was pure and inquisitive, taking in every piece of you that he could, “just…haven’t seen you in a while.”

“takin’ in the view, huh?” you said with an awkward chuckle, obviously messing around. you didn’t know how to combat his sincerity with anything other than a joke. who could blame you. it had been four years since you spoke to him; which was was to break up and say goodbye.

“yeah. if you’re good with that.”

you knew it was obvious how your breath caught in your throat by the way his lips curled into a grin. the most you could do was stare — stuck blinking at the boy in front of you.

since when was he this bold?

“hey! you guys!” izuku’s voice cut through the air that grew thick between the few inches that separated you and hitoshi.

midoriya beckoned the two of you over back to the group.

“probably suggesting to hit up another place,” he said to you as you downed the rest of your drink, “you gonna go?”

“it’s not like i have anything else to do,” you responded, finally moving your feet to carry yourself back to where the night started.

“cool,” he tried to sound as nonchalant as possible, “cool.”

you giggled silently to yourself at his single word response as he practically attached himself to you, following as close as he could behind you.

“you’re still a fuckin’ dork.”
