“It might be imagined that the most brilliant birds would be able to learn at any tempo, whereas others would learn well only when tutored at a slow tempo. But Mets and Brainards’ results demonstrate that this is not the case. Most remarkably, birds that were genetically tuned to sing slowly were not inherently worse learners. In fact, they often learnt better than the fast birds once the tutoring tempo ‘resonated’ with them.“

too many songs about love. not enough songs about sword fights
Not to be dramatic but seeing/coming into contact with ancient stuff is an overwhelming experience. I can’t look at a damn mummy without imaginging every facet of who they may have been in life. I was in a cave once to see a stone full of grooves where people had sharpened stone weapons thousands of years ago and I was told I could touch the grooves and my spirit left my body on contact. I fell through time and space. What the fuck
Shocked quartz is not actually rainbow, those images are microscopic views of single shocked quartz particles! On a non-microscopic level, this is what it looks like.
A little bit mundane compared to those funky rainbow microscope shots if you’d ask me.

“Erebor – A3, watercolour and gouache. My depiction of The Lonely Mountain (Erebor), from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Deep within the dwarven keep lies Smaug the dragon, perched upon his hoard of treasures. The smell of someone unfamiliar rouses him from sleep, but Bilbo stays hidden, watching.
Rivendell – A3, watercolour and acryla gouache. My depiction of Rivendell from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.”
Running the FRANTZ to magnetically separate the garnet from my sample, all the stuff falling out is the less magnetic amphibole. For anyone curious I’m dating the Syros monolith
Rime-rimmed rocks
Looking a bit like white moss, these cairn stones on Mountbenger Law in Scotland (at an elevation of 543 m) are covered in a special type of ice known as rime.

The end-cretaceous extinction is actually very simple. The asteroid caused all the dinosaurs to bounce up into the air like a trampoline, and only birds, who could fly, could survive falling from such a height
