Not to be dramatic but seeing/coming into contact with ancient stuff is an overwhelming experience. I can’t look at a damn mummy without imaginging every facet of who they may have been in life. I was in a cave once to see a stone full of grooves where people had sharpened stone weapons thousands of years ago and I was told I could touch the grooves and my spirit left my body on contact. I fell through time and space. What the fuck

On one side this may look like just a ordinary clam shell but when you flip it over it contains beautiful golden calcite crystals. The crystals formed when the clam died and a cavity formed allowing the crystals to develop. Took over two million years to do this. Found on the east coast of Florida in Brevard County.

.

I still remember being in complete disbelief of the actual water color of this beautiful Canadian lake! Today I’m excited to be headed to upstate New York for a few days in search of more awe and more lakes aha 🙌

GUYS, I HIT THE JACKPOT. So My Department Is In The Midst Of Organizing All The Stuff And We’re Getting

GUYS, I HIT THE JACKPOT. So my department is in the midst of organizing all the stuff and we’re getting rid of a bunch of rocks that we’ve had lying around in bins and LOOK WHAT I FOUND. It’s a copper ore, specifically a bornite (Cu5FeS4) vein. For reference, bornite is the peacock ore, and it’s even prettier in person than in the pic. I remember collecting little pieces of bornite from rock grab bags when I was a kid, but this piece is HUGE!

Happy Fossil Friday! Even Though This Animal Looks Like A Big Lizard, It Is One Of The Early Relatives

Happy Fossil Friday! Even though this animal looks like a big lizard, it is one of the early relatives of mammals: meet Edaphosaurus! It lived 280 million years ago, in the Permian Period. The key feature that tells us Edaphosaurus is related to mammals? The synapsid opening behind each eye socket. Photo: © AMNH
