Tapirus terrestris terrestris

Tapirs are like living fossils. They haven't changed much in years because they are well-adapted to this world. That was until we came into the picture. We, humans, move in this world at a pace that is hard to follow for many animals, and Tapirs are one of them. Their habits are just the opposite. Its reproduction is slow, making it very hard for them to recover once is decimated in some areas. They wander vast distances which means they need space and we are not providing that to them. Kill roads, fragmentation of the environment, crops in jungles, etc.

I think we need to understand that we are at the top of this world. Whatever we do is going to have repercussions on everything that surrounds us. We decide where the world is going and how it does it. That means also, that we are responsible for all living beings. Now is not like before, when animals extinguish because they couldn't adapt to the environment. Now they extinguish basically because they couldn't adapt to us. We set out to cover the entire tapir family, but there's a debate about including the Kabomani Tapir. This newly discovered species hasn't been validated by all studies yet. Family: Tapiridae Genus: Tapirus Conservation Status: Endangered Habitat: Mountain Forest Subspecies: 0 The Mountain Tapir, excluding the controversial Kabomani Tapir, is the smallest member of the tapir family. Unlike its tropical relatives, it thrives in chilly high-altitude environments within the Andes mountain range and is known for its thick, woolly coat. Unfortunately, decades of internal conflict in Colombia have both helped and hindered this species. While the instability has prevented hunting and habitat destruction in some regions, it has also made it difficult for researchers to study their habits and breeding patterns.

Despite the advantages and challenges presented by the conflict, the Mountain Tapir remains endangered. The species faces threats from hunting, habitat fragmentation, and the introduction of cattle. The current population of around 2,500 individuals may decline by 20% over the next 20 years, which is concerning given the species' already precarious situation. Humpback Whale

If there is a whale that has been ingrained in the imagination of humanity for centuries, and has been the one that make us fall in love of these magnificent mammals, is without a doubt, the Humpback Whale. Probably the most notorious whale in nature, the Humpback Whale has it's own genus (Megaptera) and stands out as a single one. However, some scientist have noticed that the populations in different regions have been developing very distinctive characteristics that theoretically will diverge the species into various subspecies. In other words: Evolution. In whaling times, this species almost got extinct, with it's population dropping to an alarming 90% before 1996. Today's numbers are stable around 80.000 and we can say is safe and can be found in mostly all oceans.

This is the only whale I have ever seen in my life. (well just a tail surfacing the sea) and despite the seconds I had the chance to observed it, it was extremely captivating. I hope one day I can see more of these beautiful animals and hopefully too, some of its relatives. ________________

Vietnamese Javan Rhino This one was very fun to do. I had a very low-quality photograph as a reference and I had to invent all the textures and wrinkles and also the color. Very challenging but I'm happy with the result.

There was a very small population of fewer than 12 individuals living in Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam. The last Vietnamese Javan Rhino (a subspecies of the Javan Rhinoceros) was shooted by poachers in 2011 in Vietnam. This animal used to live around very poor populations of villagers that were very hard to convince not to kill them, knowing that its parts could be sold for good money. Let's don't forget that those who decimates the population was mostly European trophy hunters at the beginning of the 20th century.

Indian boar, Andamanese pig or Moupin pig These are animals mainly nocturnal. Females and  young males move in small groups of about ten individuals, while the old boars are solitary for most of the year.

North African boar, Barbary Wild Boar This wild boar have been documented swimming offshore islands up to 7km apart. Ten different vocalizations have been distinguish. It is also remarkable that each mother can recognize her own offspring voice.

Central Asian boar Can be found in southeastern Iran, Pakistan and Northwest India.

Middle Asian boar, Black-footed Boar This boar can be seen in Middle Asia, Kazakhstan, the eastern Tien Shan, western Mongolia, Kashgar and possibly Afghanistan and southern Iran.

Chacoan Peccary, Tagua

Due to inhabit in an isolated region of South America, it is very vulnerable to human activity. As soon as is discovered in an area, it disappears. Herds are decreasing rapidly due to habitat loss, fragmentation and hunting. The area where this animal lives is being transformed into ranches, disseminating the species. In order to save the species, a population has been established in North America and some Europeans zoos. Paraguay is also establishing laws to protect it, but they are not highly enforced.

The Bryde's Whale has been a kind of puzzle for scientists because three species use to fall into its category. This is called complex in taxonomy. In other words, three (or maybe four) species of whales were thought to be subspecies, (or just the same species) as the Bryde's whale.

I wonder why not just name all four species the same if they are so closely similar? The devil is in the details. Those little differences that make one species become different from others can be the starting point for a completely new animal in million years. On the other hand, those tiny changes also may be the ones that make the animal adapt better than its relatives and therefore survive the changes of the environment.

So if is similar in appearance, as it seems in the cetaceans, there are movements and changes that are only perceptible in millions of years of evolution.

Can I suppose that the Balaenopteridae family is a young one, therefore many of its members are closely similar? Could be...

Working on this one was a real challenge. The lighting of the photo was difficult to figure out, and the shapes on the head were at an angle that I wasn't familiar with.
