hot take: what if we stopped reducing the oh hellos entire discography and presence down to soldier, poet, king. don't get me wrong, its a fantastic track, and it gets a lot of people into the band. but im so tired of saying "you know, the soldier poet king band." they are more than one song, and i beg you to listen to the rest of dear wormwood and through the deep dark valley and the wind eps because its all so good.
Okay, so we're all vaguely familiar with the fact that there are multiple wind gods in Greek mytho-religion, yeah? Well, let's talk about just how many there are in the Anemoi alone.
"The Anemoi" is the catch-all term for the wind gods who are the children of Astraios (aka Astraeus, Titan-god of stars, planets, and the art of astrology) and Eos (Titan-goddess of the dawn).
Sure, Boreas is the North Wind, with purple wings and strong ties to winter (as a winter god himself and father of Khione, nymph-goddess of snow, along with the rest of his children and his wife also being winter-aligned). Boreas is often depicted with shaggy hair and a shaggy beard, holding a conch shell in his hands and wearing a billowing cloak.
Yeah, Euros (aka Eurus) is the East Wind and an autumn god who hangs out with Helios. Euros is depicted as a bearded man holding a heavy cloak.
And Notos (aka Notus) is the South wind and the wet, storm-bringing wind of late summer and early autumn. Notos is depicted as pouring water from a vase.
And even if you didn't know the rest of the Anemoi, you surely know about Zephyros (aka Zephyrus aka Zephyr), the West Wind god of spring, husband of Khloris (aka Chloris, nymph-goddess of flowers), father of Karpos (Carpus, god of fruit). Of all the Anemoi, Zephyros is the most well-known and commonly depicted, seen as a beardless youth scattering flowers from his mantle.
Notice how weird it is that Euros isn't associated with summer, but rather late summer and early autumn? Well, if you do some digging, you'll find that there's a monument in the Museum Pio-Clementinum that lists Euros as the Southeast Wind rather than the South. Some more digging will lead you to the Tower of the Winds in Athens, which also depicts more Anemoi.
So there are other directional Anemoi? Well, probably? Kinda? According to some depictions and sources? Anyway, like their four more well-known brothers, the rest of the Anemoi are also children of Astraios and Eos. Their names and directions are as follows:
Apeliotes, god of the East Wind. Depicted as a clean-shaven man, he's also depicted as holding a cloak full of fruit and grain. This is the one associated with summer. However, when knocked down to four instead of eight, Euros takes over as god of summer and the East Wind instead of Apeliotes.
Kaikias (aka Caicias), god of the Northeast Wind. He's depicted with shaggy hair and a shaggy beard, carrying a shield full of hail stones.
Lips, god of the Southwest Wind. He's depicted as a winged man holding the stern of a ship.
Skiron (aka Sciron, but not to be confused for the bandit son of Poseidon) is the Northwest Wind. He is a bearded man tilting a cauldron that signifies the onset of winter.
Sometimes, instead of being depicted as humans or winged humans, the Anemoi were instead depicted as horses (because the ancient Greeks loved their horses) that were stabled and kept in line by Aiolos (Aeolus), divine keeper of the winds and king of the mythical, floating island of Aiolia (Aeolia), also called just the "king of the winds". Sources go back and forth on whether or not he was a god himself or just a king who also happens to possibly be the grandson of Kheiron (aka Khiron aka Chiron). Either way, when they are horses, the Anemoi answer to Aiolos.
The Anemoi aren't the only horse-shaped wind beings in Greek mytho-religion, though - that would be the Anemoi Thuellai (singular Anemos Thuella). These are the sons of Typheous (Typhon) are horse-shaped wind daimones (personified spirits) of violent storm winds. These may instead be the wind horses that Aiolos keeps in check and have been later conflated with the gentler Anemoi.
There's also the idea that several horses in Greek mytho-religio-history were, in fact, the children of the Anemoi, which...gets complicated. There's a lot of complicated connections between the Anemoi and horses.

Don’t mind me going insane over the oh hellos again…
I always hear people pronounce the name of the Oh Hellos song “Passerine” as /ˈpæsəriːn/, but in the song they only ever uses the plural so technically shouldn’t it be /ˈpæsərɪn/??
I wrote some stuff based on The Four Winds album collection by The Oh Hellos.
Idk what these are but I really love them, so do with them what you will 💙

The calm before the storm. Letting go of the past, yet always longing to cling on. The deep unsettling despair that comes with nostalgia. A haze of memories, blasted in the sun until they become unrecognisable. The dragging of a whirlpool, deep into the sea. The humming of cicadas from far in the distance. Notos brings the winds of Summer. A warm, bold season. Her colours are dull but her spirit sturdy. Summer brings many memories, but those come in many varieties. Summer days spent joyous, and those spent alone, in sweltering heat that blisters your very bones. A warrior, a queen, a hero, a leader. Notos carries unimaginable burdens. The Southern Wind heads The Four Winds, stoic and strong. Every word a torrent, like the sea that froths and foams when children splash amongst its waves to escape the warm weather. She remembers the things of the past, the days of summer long gone, even when those around her do not. It is her fate.
.
A deep sense of community. Love, everlasting and ever fruitful. Bountiful harvests that bring such joy. The coming of great change, for better or for worse. Celebration. Eurus is the carrier of the autumnal winds. He carries a light disposition, bringing in a season of thanks. Be grateful when he arrives on the tail of Summer, a reprieve from the heat and a buffer from the cold. Harvests are plentiful, and allow for feasts that feed many. They bring friends and family together, a feeling of communal love that spreads across the land. Dancing until the night fades away, drinking until the sun rises and sets the leaves of the trees alight like a raging fire. While creatures begin to slumber and vegetation withers with the chill in the air, some life prospers and grows. The feeling of warmth within us carries us through the nearing cold, and into a feeling of lightness. Eurus is the Eastern Wind, the youngest of The Four Winds, and the most naive. He is not yet wise to the ways of his winds, the death that Autumn heralds alongside the joy it promises. In time he will learn the truth.

An endless despair, reaching into your very soul. A sense of impending doom, yet with nothing you can pinpoint to cause the dread. Repetition and routine, over and over until it becomes unbearable. A longing for something more, but it's just out of reach. The long darkness of the far north. The bitter cold and biting winds that freeze your heart. Boreas brings with her the season of winter. She is a dreamer, always wishing for more, despite the cards she's been handed. Many despise her. When she arrives, so does the snow that lays thick on the earth and kills all life beneath its smothering weight. The shortened days that bring early darkness that causes a sadness that clings to even the hardiest of beings. Life is short, and Boreas makes it shorter. Yet she brings beauty as well, the Aurora Borealis, dancing above the world, ever intangible. That's the problem with Boreas. The most beautiful things are always intangible. The Northern Wind is one that carries with her a deep depression. She desires nothing more than for change, but every day is the same blank canvas of snow and ice. She just wants to know the warmth of the sun once more.
.
Creativity, ever blossoming and ever expanding into worlds of its own. Growth, learning from the past and looking to the future. The blossoming of new life, born from the womb or hatched from a seed. Colours bursting from beneath a world of black and white. With Zephyrus comes the winds of spring. He brings in hope for the future after the dull dread of winter. His bright energy brings new ideas to light, spurring those inclined to it into great displays of the creativity that rests within them. Paintings of the most magnificent trees, poems of playful animals, and songs of hope and life born anew. Growth is his most powerful weapon. While new life rises and transforms, so does one's spirit. Lessons of the past take shape, as new bonds are formed and new mistakes are made. The Western Wind is the bringer of hope. He ushers in a season of progressiveness, urging those around him to make big decisions, no matter the consequences. He is carefree, always carrying with him a sense of joy. Yet with that joy there comes the intrinsic knowledge that things all come full circle. The times of darkness will return, and if one does not learn from them now, then they never will.

Their tales as old as time, their stories never ending, they traverse the world on the wings of inevitability. Just like the seasons, the four winds flow together and apart in a constant ebb and flow, changing with the days and always entwined.
For around six months now I've been living next to an actual real life archive, and it's unnervingly similar to TMA! Here's a few notable things from these past months:
-i watched a balding man in a very posh suit carry a massive antique briefcase out of the building and out it into his car at 4am
-at 12:30am i made direct eye contact with someone working at a computer on a floor I'd never seen anyone go before. (there's a section of car park and pavement between my building and the archive so this was pretty impressive! )
-The smoking area is always full at weirdly specific hours of day and night (presumably breaks), and completely empty the rest of the time. Clearly archiving really does encourage a smoking habit!
-one of the floors has really bright LED lights which were left on day and night for a week, then off for four days, and now are on with every single blind closed.
-for the first few months I only ever saw three people go in or out of the building- a generic looking security guard who yells at people that park in front of the entrance; and a dishevelled looking man, pursued by another man from the smoking area.
-from my window I can see directly into a room that's filled with mannequins! I couldn't tell what they were at first due to the sheer amount, but they range from cpr dummies to full body mannequins.
-despite being able to see many desks I've only consistently seen two people working at them.
-the fire alarm once went off for hours and nobody evacuated.
-recently at 3am I watched a security guard from the building come out to feed bagels to the fox in the car park (not really that relevant but I thought it was quite nice)
-two of the windows have humanlike figures in them at all times, but they're impossible to focus on so I have no idea what they are.
piano concerto no.2 in g minor, mvt 1 - sergey prokofiev; local music student passes out in the practise room and has an existential horror related epiphany

Convinced the Oh Hellos’ four Anemoi Cycle albums are best when listened to on loop in one continuous unshuffled cycle, spring-summer-fall-winter, birth to life to dusk to death, the old wheel turning, over and over again, on and on and on
The Oh Hellos Lyrics that make me feral:
-Yeah, I’m one spoon away/From setting the ends of my hair on fire/If I’m kindling for a little while/At least I’d feel of use
-No, I am not afraid to die/it’s every breath that comes before/Heartache I’ve heard is part of life/and I have broken more and more
-Even when you haunt me with ire relentless/batter down my door when you find me defenseless
-If you’re doing all the leaving, then its never your love lost/If you leave before the start, then it was never love at all
-And you will surely be the death of me, but how could I have known?
look what they found!
zephyrus came out today which means the oh hellos’ anemoi eps are complete and i’m ASCENDING
