Happy #GhibliGourmet month! Today’s recipe is an obscure item from My Neighbour Totoro - the gift that Kanta brings to the Kusakabes when they first move in.
I posted a quick-fix ohagi from Sousei no Onmyoji before, but was tempted to make a real ohagi from scratch. Usually, I do not have not much affinity with western desserts, so I wanted to try an asian one, to only find out that I have not much affinity with wagashi as well.
I tried following the recipe for anko from just one cookbook, but somehow it didn’t work for me. I even soaked the beans for 24 hours! It was a lot of work for not much anko. See whether her recipe above (click the link above) works for you, if not, I have reflected the cooking times it took me below as well. I decided to only make the non-strained tsubuan version.
Also, check out what the rest of the Fandom Foodies have made for #GhibliGourmet in the linkup post here!
Recipe is below the cut! (Dashboard Users)
Ingredients
For Anko
1 cup (250ml) azuki beans
1 cup (250ml) sugar (or to taste)
Pinch of salt
For Rice
360ml mochi rice
390ml water
Pinch of salt
Others
Kinako powder (for topping, optional)
+ Plastic Gloves/Clingwrap
Method
For Anko
1. Soak the beans in water overnight. (I soaked them for a day)
2. The next day, pour the old water away, and put in new water about 1-2 inches above the beans.
3. Set beans to boil on high heat.
4. Reduce to a simmer after it starts to boil. Keep some water handy to add whenever it boils down. (Note: this somehow took me 5 hours? Even though other recipes say 1-2 hours.)
5. When the beans are soft and you can smush one between your fingers, add the sugar in gradually, stirring with a ladle/slotted spoon.
6. When you can draw a line at the bottom of the pot with the ladle that lasts for two seconds, it means it’s viscous enough and then you can add in the salt, stir, and let it cool.
For the rice
1. Set the mochi rice to cook in your rice cooker. (Use the sushi rice function if it has one.) I was going to make it in a clay pot and everything, but the long anko-making process made me tired, so I used a rice cooker.
2. Sprinkle salt over and then mash it into rough chunks with a wet wooden pestle.
Assembly
I made 2 kinds of ohagi - the anko-covered one, and the kinako covered one.
For the anko covered one:
1. Wet a plastic glove/ clingwrap, and spread about 2 tbsp anko on it.
2. Make a rice ball about 1-1.5 inch in diameter, and place it in the centre of the anko.
3. Cover all the rice with anko. Add more anko if necessary.
For the Kinako-covered one
1. Spread and flatten the rice on your palm, with a layer of damp plastic in between your hand and the rice. Make it as flat and wide as you can.
2. Place a dollop of anko in the centre, and work the rice to cover the anko. Add more rice if necessary. (And this was why my kinako ones were bigger than my anko-covered ones)
3. Pour the kinako (soybean flour) on a plate, and roll the rice-covered ohagi in it!
Finally, decide to just have your neighbours give you ohagi everytime instead of making it yourself.

A music video to There Beneath by The Oh Hellos. no fandom for once. These characters and this video idea just kind of came to me while listening to this song the other day. My grandfather died today. Has been dying for the past week. Which is why I think the idea of death and graves were on my mind. Along with the vivid picture of a zombie hand coming out of the ground but instead of horrific is it soft and gentle and lovingly rendered
Made the mistake of looking up the Oh Hellos on TikTok.
It's all basically...
Imaginary person: “Aren't the Oh Hellos just some Christian Band? Why do you listen to them?”
Response: The person singing along to song with enthusiasm. (As if to say, it doesn't matter because they make actual good music or sometimes “It doesn't matter, music is what you make of it!”
And like listen, generally that's not really a problem, I think. The thing rubbing me the wrong is that... The Oh Hellos are not a "Christian Band". They are christian, they do use religious allegory, but like it is more multifaceted than that. On the religious side they often explore faith and deconstruct ideas they learned in church.
But also their use of Christianity is often for framing and comparison. Bitter Water is a song about a toxic relationship using wormwood (a healing, but potentially deadly herb) from the bible as a comparison. Constellations uses the Tower of Babylon as a metaphor for being stuck in your ways and causing damage because of it. Like it's so multifaceted.
(Not to mention that Christianity isn't all they reference at least in their most recent albums. They also reference greek mythology quite a bit. But that might be because they're using the four winds.)
Anyway, just they're so good at writing lyrics that bring together so many ideas and I just want the take on them to be less “Who cares if they make Christian Music, they're still good lol” and more about like how the lyrics become more and more meaningful as you listen to and pick them apart.

(Spoilers for A Silent Voice/Koe no Katachi)
Shouya Ishida is one of my favorite anime/manga characters ever, and I’ve been meaning to make a post about him. In my opinion, he is the poster child for the perfect redemption arc. I want to talk about some of the reasons why his change of heart was foreshadowed/under the surface right at the beginning, and why we as an audience are rooting for him, despite the horrible things he did to Shouko.
A Silent Voice is currently one of the top anime movies of all time, and while I do really love the movie (KyoAni is amazing) I am a much bigger fan of the manga; it has more time to expand on the characters and introduces some smaller important plot lines. In this post I will be quoting some moments that were in the manga and not the anime, aka, Shouya’s internal monologue. Anyway, let’s get into it. I want to start with why I think Shouya went down the bullying path in the first place.
Environment and Role Models
One of the biggest factors that influenced Shouya’s class’s toxic environment and led him to be a bully was having an uncaring ableist teacher. In the manga, the phrases “something we just have to deal with” and “this is your responsibility”, things that the teacher said to him regarding Shouko, repeatedly echo in Shouya’s mind whenever he interacts with her. At some points, the teacher actually laughs when the other students make fun of Shouko, letting Shouya (as well as the others) believe that it’s an ok thing to do. If Shouya had an adult figure in the classroom with a stronger sense of morality, he might have changed his tune earlier.
Shouya was also highly influenced by his peers (which makes sense because he was literally 11 years old). When another teacher comes into the classroom to explain what sign language is, there’s a very small panel before anyone else says anything, where Shouya thinks “that sounds fun”. At first, he’s interested in sign language and may have been willing to give it a shot. But then, Ueno suddenly starts complaining about how it’s much easier for them to use the notebook than sign language, and Shouya absorbs this and immediately goes back to thinking about how much of an inconvenience Shouko is to him.
Another influence on Shouya’s behavior is his home environment. I do not want to shade Shouya’s mom completely because overall I think she is a loving parent, but unfortunately she was not able to fully be there for her son because she is a single mom with a full time job. Even though he was in a caring home, he was not necessarily in one that gave him enough attention, and by the time Miyako realized what her son was up to it was too late. If she had given him more guidance earlier on in his involvement with Shouko, they may have been able to avoid disaster.
But all of these reasons aren’t excuses, they’re explanations. Regardless of why, Shouya contributed to Shouko’s severe trauma and did unforgivable things. So why do I think he’s the best case for redemption in anime?
Recognition/Guilt
Shouya is repeatedly shown as having actual remorse for his past actions. This is why other bully characters like Ueno and Kawai are seen as far less likable than Shouya. Other people on here might have actual analyses about those two characters, but as for this post all I’m going to say is that I believe they are much more widely hated than Shouya because of their initial denial of having done anything wrong.
It’s also important to remember that Shouya changed his tune as soon as Shouko left. It wasn’t years after she left his school that he realized he was wrong, it was days. He as an 11 year old realized he was wrong for hurting her; he figured it out as soon as he noticed how she was protecting him from being bullied. And once he himself started to be harassed by his peers, he finally recognized the full weight of what he had done to her.
Some might criticize this moment, saying “Shouya only realized bullying was bad because he got bullied himself”, but frankly, what’s so wrong about that? Many kids who bully don’t realize the full extent of the emotional damage they’re doing until it happens to them. Through this experience Shouya was able to realize, “this is how much pain she felt from the things I did to her”. And that unfortunate shared experience is what drives him to have so much guilt and a desire to change.
Change of Behavior
After his realization of the severe damage he had done to Shouko, Shouya started actively being more kind and thoughtful to others. He learned sign language in order to properly apologize to Shouko. He started helping out strangers and not judging people who are different (Tomohiro, Yuzuru). He acknowledged the severe financial strain he put on his mother and worked hard to pay her back.
And the whole point of the ending of the story is that him feeling sorry for himself and hating himself for the rest of his life isn’t going to undo his past behavior. All he can do now is operate with a better mindset going forward and make a positive difference instead.
Obviously, no one should be forced to or feel obligated to forgive their bully/abuser. But the story isn’t about whether Shouko should forgive Shouya, it’s about whether Shouya can change into a better person. I think it’s a very harmful ideology to believe that people who were bullies as children will be the same person forever. The world isn’t divided into ‘good people’ and ‘bad people’, it’s made up entirely of people who are capable of doing both good and bad things. And I really like how the protagonist of A Silent Voice is someone who had done bad things but is now choosing to be different.
Anyway, this was super long so thank you if you read all of it. Please let me know your thoughts on Shouya or any other characters from this movie/manga.
Thanks for reading!

This is a weird request, but does anybody have recommendations for media about failure/regret/making mistakes, and the power of human bonds to help cope with it? Off the top of my head, Disco Elysium, Omori, the Baru Cormorant series, A Silent Voice, and Everything Everywhere All At Once have really hit that nail on the head for me, but I am insanely curious what else is out there.
A Silent Voice is so good
believe it or not, my blog was supposed to be all about movies and film (thus the name filminah, innovative i know) i don't know if i enjoy torturing myself or what but here are some movies that made me cry. when marnie was there (anime 2014) - follows teen anna sasaki through a journey of self exploration that takes place due to a mysterious girl she meets named marnie. now, this is definitely not the best ghibli film ever, a little awkward at times especially in the dub but miyazaki does not know how to make a bad movie. the twist was kinda expected but it's ghibli and it's so damn charming you can't help but get attached to anna and marnie and feel everything the way they do. i want to eat your pancreas (anime 2018) - the title is weird, i know. an introverted boy, haruki finds out the secret of his very popular, bubbly polar-opposite-of-him classmate named sakura. she is affected with a severe pancreatic disease. the way they build the connection between the main two characters is so so good to watch, fulfilling what you know will happen in the most unexpected way and showing the aftermath of the movies major events. a silent voice (anime 2016)- this was the first movie i ever found sad enough to make me cry actual tears. ishida shoyo bullied a nishimiya shouko in middle school. shouko is deaf. now a highschooler, after being unable to commit s**c*d* he finds himself becoming friends with shouko, helping her get better and maybe himself along the way. imo this film is one of the best representations of a lead with struggling mental health and they show that incredibly well in both visuals and dialogue, kyoto animation always impresses with their work and the sound work is impeccably done with the way they establish an atmosphere or put you in a characters shoes, embodying them. link to pt 2 (to be added)

Most of the people I talk to who say “I didn’t like A Silent Voice/ Koe no Katachi” state that they didn’t like it because “The main character is a bully and gets redeemed.”
And I think I know WHY they say that and also why I think that thought process is fundamentally flawed… so I have a few minutes, let’s get into it.
Most media, especially lately, has this redemption arc of… not actually having one. It’s usually a “sacrifice play” that a character makes to redeem themselves before they die, or a very quick “forgive and forget” scenario, or something very much “not built up, and often never referenced again in any meaningful way.”
But A Silent Voice/ Koe no Katachi is literally all build up, no use of the “sacrifice play” moment, and the purpose of the film is redemption through hard work to be a better person.
The other part of the problem, from my perspective on those who don’t like the series, seems to come from the fact that certain readers refuse to see the abuse and bullying that the bully is put through as well. Almost to the point of saying “well that’s what you get for doing that” - and … yeah I get it, it’s a lesson to be learned but… if the person who was the bully, is also bullied, then makes an effort to be better and then is bullied and cut off from everyone MORE because of their actions to better themselves… is that really a deserved perspective to have as a reader/watcher?
Do we, as actual people and those absorbing this content, want people to suffer that much even AFTER they have properly shown they are growing, changing, being better, working harder, and making that effort on their own even with the constant bullying they receive never going away?
Simple answer to that is NO.
Which is why A Silent Voice/ Koe no Katachi handles things so well, the main character finds new people who don’t know him or his past, and - through the forgiveness he receives from the person he hurt - begins to try to branch out and become a person again after being forced to lock himself away… both by others and as a self imposed punishment.
So here’s WHY I think A Silent Voice/ Koe no Katachi is so great about what it does or attempts to do…
The people AROUND the main character are, at their own speed, forgiving and opening up to the main character.
But the main character is still struggling to forgive himself.
The story isn’t about other people forgiving him, he already did most of the work to be a better person by the time we - in the present - meet him. But he’s still lost, disconnected, and not understanding where he is going wrong on making things better… so much so that he almost gives up on everything.
And in that exact thought is where we find the purpose of A Silent Voice/ Koe no Katachi’s story overall.
Each player in this story feels like they have done a wrong, one way or another, and it’s the journey to find their own peace, their own acceptance of self, working for the forgiveness they want, and then ultimately forgiving themselves for what they have done.
And again, that’s where I think people’s view on this series is off… it’s not about the redemption arc, most of the cast (especially the main charcters) have already gone through those redemption moments in their past - and we are shown them - but they continue to carry that weight and fundamental disconnection from life and happiness at all because they feel they need to keep hurting themselves in one way or another because they don’t feel they deserve that forgiveness yet.
But they do.
And it’s shown they do.
And when they finally get to the moment of realization that they do… their world opens up to them again.
The best example of this growth is when the main character STARTS to feel better, but then has a triggering interaction, and experiences a huge flair of rejection sensitive dysphoria that causes him to painfully relapse.
Anyway… I adore A Silent Voice/ Koe no Katachi because it shows just how difficult overcoming these things can be, even if the world has moved on, sometimes you just can’t deal with it… and yet other times you can find the help you need in the most unusual of places.
My Favorite Forms Of Media are the ones that are not afraid to say, “Hey. There’s some terrible things about the world. Sometimes it won’t get better. But that’s what life is and you gotta suck it up and swim by. You don’t get a second life, after all.”
My Favorite Forms Of Media are the ones with the characters that are not painted on a black or white spectrum and simply are. You can judge their actions all you want and hate them, and be perfectly allowed to.
My Favorite Forms Of Media are the ones that shed light as much as dark. There’s always gonna be hope, even if it’s not possible. There’s always a way to be better even if you don’t follow it. There’s a spectrum of good and bad, but it wouldn’t be doing the good morals justice if you didn’t see the perspective of the bad moral. Sometimes we have to adapt to survive, and that can be either a blessing or a curse if we do survive.
We could die at any time, and there’s no one way for anyone to look at that.
So I wanted to tag some of my favorites as a little tribute.
Best manga descriptions ever.
