You know, dude bros out there hating on Abby because "she is not hot/she doesn't look like a woman" are so WEAK! Have you seen those arms?! Yes ma'am!!

Also, if I was an apocalypse militia soldier planning on getting revenge on someone you bet your ass I would get as jacked as motherfucking possible! And they have an actual gym in the stadium so..

I really feel like anybody who finished the game and still hated Abby at the end completely missed the point of the game. The game makes it very clear that in the world of the last of us, things aren’t all black and white. It’s not as simple as just good and bad, nobody is truly innocent.

Just a PSA: you can dislike Abby but people who draw and post art of her don’t need to hear about it on their art posts. Literally just don’t fucking comment on their art if you’re gonna be like “nice art but this character sucks” like just ignore the post like a normal person

genuinely do not understand how people completely miss the point of the game being less about getting revenge for Abby, and more about forgiving Joel. Abby is meant to parallel Joel, not Ellie. If you think Abby is a villain, then so are Joel and Ellie. TLOU1 was about love, but it is far deeper than that. The real point of TLOU1 is to ask how far you are willing to go, and what you’re willing to do in the name of loving someone. Even before meeting Ellie, Joel did unspeakable things to people. During the story line of TLOU1, he does pretty horrific things as well, but I suppose we can excuse that as self defense, and trying to protect Ellie. But the ending? Joel murders dozens of innocent people, including the woman who looked after and raised Ellie, in cold blood. He ripped away the worlds chance of a cure, and regardless of whether they would have actually been able to make that cure, Joel wouldn’t have known so it doesn’t matter. Joel chose one girl over the fate of the entire world, and over the fate of the human race. That isn’t noble of him, it’s selfish. He then lies to Ellie about doing so, after spending so much time learning how much a cure means to her, and how she feels it is her place to at least try, to at least try to give all the lives lost protecting her some sort of meaning. Joel takes away her own free will because he is selfish, and because he alone cannot cope with losing another child. He spends the next few years continuing to lie to her, and his own brother swears to take that same lie to the grave and to never tell her what really happened. Ellie’s resentment and anger towards Joel is 100% justified. Ellie spends the entire TLOU2 trying to find closure, driven by hatred. She hates Abby for taking away her chance to forgive Joel and have a stable relationship with him, much like she hates Joel for taking away her choice to be the world’s cure. She hates herself for becoming such a vile person in her own eyes. She spends the entire game wishing to forgive and to be forgiven. Not only does she want to forgive Joel for his actions, but she wants to be forgiven herself, for surviving and for not being able to make good on her goal of being the world’s cure. She’s finally able to achieve that closure and, it seems for the most part, overcome the survivors guilt at the sequels ending. I don’t see how that is depressing, when the ending of TLOU1 sets up the entire plot of TLOU2, and its ending delivers the conclusion of her character.

In my opinion the hardest thing to swallow about TLoU 2 is how it challenges protagonist-centred morality with Abby. Because the thing is, Abby really doesn’t do anything worse or better than what Ellie or Joel have done. Her motivation for killing Joel is literally identical to Ellie’s own motivation for seeking revenge. Yes the way she kills Joel is horrific but Ellie kills people just as brutally (esp. Nora), and the more people talk about how much they hate her and wanted to fuck her up at the end of the game just proves that you’re capable of understanding her impulse to enact extreme violence on someone out of revenge. The only thing that makes Abby “worse” to the player is that she kills the protagonist of the last game and traumatizes Ellie, both characters who we’ve come to know and care about from a meta perspective. She is a direct challenge to the ingrained assumption we have when interpreting a text that the only characters who actually matter, who are actually human and deserve our empathy, are the protagonist(s) and their allies. And yeah, that can be a hard thing to adjust to, but personally I love narratives that challenge my own assumptions about fiction and whose perspectives matter.

Last year, The HRC (Human Rights Campaign), reported that in 2019 alone, at least 26 trans and gender nonconforming people were killed in the United States alone. Disproportionately, Black trans people were the victims. Those I have illustrated here, do not even scratch the surface of what is, and should be recognised as, an epidemic. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we do whatever we can to support the black trans community.
