”Oh I am just fine.” I answer a little too high-pitched.”This is a regular hazard when I talk to any person ever. Anyways, my offer still stands. A cup of hot cocoa, a few batteries and a lighter that may or may not work.” I say, smiling reassuringly.

I jump as she replies to me. “okay if you say so, I’ll gladly take you up on that. Uh, what do you mean a hazard? if you don’t mind me asking. You seem cool.” I smile at her.

Knock, knock.

Nina grinned. “That’s cool,” They were interrupted by some ringing, but she was surprised that Peyton hung up. Maybe Nina didn’t scare her off after all.

“Yeah, apparently. So, what band?”

“ His name was Shawn. The guy on the phone. He was just making sure I got here okay.. Uh the band is Black Viel Brides. They’re good if you like head banging music. What about yours. Which band? ”

“Nina’s not that bad. She’s just got a rough exterior.” I say. Remembering her batteries I fish through my drawer and grab the case. Swinging around, I go to sit beside her on the love seat and hand her the whole case. I then lean forward to grab my donut mug, reverently inhaling while holding it up to my nose. 

“What’s your story?” I ask, head tilting to the side curiously.

I guess.. She seems a little homophobic... Oh, thanks for the batteries.” I fiddle with the package.” Uh um I guess I could talk about my story with you.. I trust you for some reason, even though I’ve known you for like five minutes.. but uh if I say anything I’m gonna need a cig.  Can I?”

Knock, knock.

“Well you seem to have a place to live now, and a new friend if you want one.” I place my hand on her arm and give her a reassuring squeeze, “ And life is a journey, just because we did something in the past we’ere not proud of doesn’t mean we can’t move forward.” I give one more squeeze before letting go and begin to clear some of the dishes from my coffee table and wash them in my kitchen sink.

 “Do you know Veronica Mars?!” I call, hoping my voice makes it over the sound my obnoxiously loud sink.

“ Thanks, I would appreciate another friend right now ” I glance at her hand on my arm. I wasn’t expecting that. I see her suddenly get up and grab our cups. I awkwardly follow behind her. She suddenly yells out something. “ Dude! there's no need to yell. I’m here.” Veronica Mars? “ Veronica Mars? What’s that?”

Knock, knock.

Nina tried to get up at 6:30 in the morning before her siblings woke up so she could go to the gym. Lately, Nathalia had been waking up earlier and crawling into bed with her when she had nightmares. However, Nina hadn’t been woken up at all last night, and the children seemed to be asleep and sound. Usually she would stay at home to work out, but she hadn’t been in a while and she didn’t know if she would get another golden opportunity. She bundled herself in her thick jacket and wrapped her knit sweater around her neck. She hated the cold. She quietly opened the front door before popping in her earbuds. That’s when she smelt cigarette smoke wafting through the air. She wrinkled her nose in disgust, looking over to see Peyton leaving her house bright and early. Should she acknowledge her? That would probably be the nice thing to do. “You’re leaving early…” She retorted. Nina could still feel the tension from their last conversation.

“Uh yeah.” I take a drag of my cig and blow it in her direction. “ Not much choice there.” I turn to walk away fast.

Job Searching

“The cutest.” I agree. “ And ya, it’s short for Munchkin because of his little legs.” I beam. Maybe I’ll actually make a friend. I notice she exhales the cigarette smoke away from me and munchkin. Awe, how nice. Either way, I’m going to be purchasing some very expensive air fresheners. 

Inquisitive about her story, I usher her on, getting comfortable with the remnants of my now cool hot chocolate in hand.

“ Basically, in a nutshell, my parents think I’m a disgusting fag and my girlfriend had sex with a guy and only dated me as a stupid bet.” I angrily huff with my eyes teary.

Knock, knock.

After a year of watching CR, the cast’s panels and the Between the Sheets interviews… I think I can safely say that the most important lesson I’ve learned from them is how life-changing it can be to surround yourself with good people.

Surround yourself with people who are open and vocal about how much they love and admire you, who call themselves your biggest fan and who are there to support you through your path to greatness.

Surround yourself with people who enjoy their own interests unapologetically, who genuinely seek for the things that will make them happy and who are not restrained by what people will think of them. 

Surround yourself with people who aren’t afraid to show affection through words or physical gestures, who are shamelessly in love with their special other and who see that their love is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Surround yourself with people with healing energy, people who will listen to you attentively, who will offer a helping hand when the world is falling down around you, who will try their best to understand your struggles.

Surround yourself with people that are loud, who aren’t afraid to exist brightly and colorfully, who laugh and cry and have fun and feel with every fiber of their being. 

Most importantly, though, be that kind of person. Put positive energy into the world and you will find it coming back to you. This group of nerds is just a taste of what unapologetic genuine shameless love can accomplish. And I feel grateful every day for the reminder that there’s someone out there who, when you least expect it, will show up and love you and make life a thousand times better.
