Nina got herself comfortable in the front seat, adjusting the mirrors and her chair. “Yeah, sure. And, I understand,” She reassured, although she really couldn’t help her judgements sometimes. “And no problem,”

She turned her head to the back. “You ready to go?”

“ Ready willing and able!” I two finger salute. “ Do you have anywhere to be?”

Startled from a loud voice behind me I drop the mug and panic surges through my body as I turn to face an attacker. It’s just my neighbor. “Sorry.” I mumble. 

“ I was wondering if you wanted to finish the episode of Veronica Mars I was watching before you knocked on my door. Wait, I never caught your name! My name’s Rosie. I think I may have mentioned it earlier, but you seemed a little distracted.” I add quickly. I know her life story, well some of it and not her name. I knew that my social skills were sub-par at best, but I didn’t know they were THAT bad.

“ Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. Uh, Peyton. My name I mean. And sure I could stay for a little bit to watch some tv.”

Knock, knock.

“Three words, want a ride?” She rebuked, dangling her keys after locking her front door. Nina ought to be nice for once.

“ Five words. Yes please and thank you. Aha, Thats probably the only time youre gonna hear those works out of my mouth, is there any place in particular that you know is hiring?- hey, wait is this your way of saying sorry, cause that ain’t gonna cut it” I raise my eyebrow at her.

“ I would appreciate a REAL apology.”

The scent of vanilla seeps into her nostrils as she gets the board games set up. Rosie had made cupcakes, which were almost ready to come out of her cute little oven. Although she hoped it was appropriate for this kind of thing. Who doesn’t like cupcakes she thought, brushing off her worry. She had finished dinner a while before, Chicken Kiev. It was a Russian meal she found on pinterest after she figured out that Borscht was Russian, and Nina & Nathalia seemed like Russian names so she kind of put two and two together. Oh, and hopefully Peyton approved of the food.

Insistent knocking makes her drop her muse. Furrowing her brow, she jogs over to her front door and opens it up. Standing huddled together is Nina and her two little siblings, with a  grimacing Peyton behind them. She had met the cute little girl, but she hadn’t met the boy, who seemed a little older and more than a little unamused, a look she often saw on Nina. Rosie musters her brightest smile, “Welcome!” She has so got this.

Nina raised her eyebrows as the door opened and the aroma of vanilla cupcakes sunk into her skull. Rosie had really gone all out. She ushered the two little ones inside, watching as Nikolai went to the couch with his Nintendo DS and Nathalia jumped up and down expectantly. “Are their cupcakes?” The little girl squealed excitedly. Nina nodded in reassurance as she walked over to the couch where she sat beside Nikolai. “Nikolai, put that down please, spasibo,” She asked, watching Nikolai huff and move the device away from his face. Nina looked up to see everyone else. “You really went out of your way here, Rosie. Although, it’s very nice,” She admitted. She admired Rosie’s quaint and homey environment. It reminded her of Rosie. She wondered what Peyton thought of all this as Nina sat back and moved her eyes from one child at a time.

Peyton’s breath hitched as she got a glimpse of the room over Nina’s shoulder. Rosie had really gone all out with the board games. There wasn’t an inch of empty space on her coffee table. It was amazing. Peyton looked around with wide eyes. She inhaled through her nose to smell the lovely scent of vanilla. “Man, if only home was like this,” Mumbled Peyton. letting out a long whistle in amazement. “ Rosie, you really out did yourself. This is awesome!- Hey does anyone wanna play Clue?” She speaks over her shoulder as she goes to sit down near the little guy. “ You wanna play a board game with me, big guy?” Peyton reaches over to grab Clue with her bad arm and winces. She looks down to see a red splotch expanding on her shirt sleeve. Looking at it, she begins to internally panic afraid that everyone will see.

Huh. She was younger than I thought she was. I wonder what her story is.

”Oh I am just fine.” I answer a little too high-pitched.”This is a regular hazard when I talk to any person ever. Anyways, my offer still stands. A cup of hot cocoa, a few batteries and a lighter that may or may not work.” I say, smiling reassuringly.

I jump as she replies to me. “okay if you say so, I’ll gladly take you up on that. Uh, what do you mean a hazard? if you don’t mind me asking. You seem cool.” I smile at her.

Taken aback by her kind words, I say nothing and turn to make her a hot-cocoa. I specifically choose my sassy mug with a a cat on it saying ‘Oops. I don’t care’ figuring it would suit her nicely. “Make yourself at home.” I tell her looking over my shoulder. I hand over the mug and bring my free hand up for her to shake.

”Rosie.”

“Aha, nice mug. I like that cat. so uh thanks for letting me come in.. I didn’t expect you to be so nice. I met the other lady uhh.. Nina I think and she wasn’t exactly welcoming, haha.” As I speak I take a sip and sit down on the white loveseat.

Now Nina was intrigued. “How fresh?” She passed the heavy bag towards the girl.

“Yeah I have a few,” A few was a bit too loose of a term, but she always had a thing for artistic expression. To her, tattoos were symbolic. It was like historic artifacts on your skin and she was the archaeologist deciphering a code.

I stared at her for a minute contemplating what to say. “ like three days ago fresh. They still sting a little but nothing that I can’t handle. By the way, it totally flew over my head what’s your name?” I ask her trying to move on from talking any more about my tattoos.

Oh,shit.

“Yes, but it can wait a few minutes. Just gotta be back within the hour,” Nina informed her as they turned the corner.

“ okay, awesome thanks so much. I really need this job so hopefully, I don’t say something incredibly rude but knowing me that's highly likely.”
