One of the funniest online parenting rabbitholes Iâve fallen into is parents being irate and hysterical that their children are referred to by nicknames by their friends and family. And the kid doesnât care or actively asks to be called the nickname. It would be slightly different if the name was something with a deep cultural meaning to the parent but usually itâs white women breaking down about their kid asking to be referred to as âbugâ instead of *insert white bread top 100 trendy American baby name*. Theyâll get so upset about it too. Theyâre like âI NAMED HER MACKINGSLEIGH FOR A REASON.â not realizing that their child is not an accessory but a living, thinking, sentient being capable of choosing how they would prefer to be called. And kids so often outgrow their nickname.
