Writing x Characters When You Aren’t x, A Masterlist

x: a variable used to represent something unknown.

We’ve seen an influx of questions about how to write stories based around characters of color, disability, non-binary, etc. when the author does not fall into these categories. Rather than have these posts take over the site, we’ve decided to compile a list of resources to help our fellow writers become more educated about writing what they do not immediately know. However, this list is not the end-all-be-all of knowledge; one should always try to learn from someone with first hand experience in any topic. The world is constantly growing and changing, and because of that, there will always be more to learn. The admins at Plotline Hotline want to help writers form respectful, informed, and realistic characters that broaden the narrow range we see in literature today.

*Be wary that some of the topics listed below contain sensitive material. Reader discretion is advised.*

As always, the links I found to be especially apt will be in bold. Topics are listed alphabetically, excepting the “other” section.

Okay Bernie stans.

I need you all to prepare yourselves to vote for Biden in November.

I’m not happy about it either.  I wanted Elizabeth Warren to destroy Trump on the debate floor.  I wanted to watch her shatter the glass ceiling.  I wanted student loan forgiveness, Medicare for All, and refugee and immigrant protections.

But I’m not going to get that.  So I am going all in for Biden.

This can no longer be a matter of “well if I don’t get my way THEN I’M NOT VOTING”.  I’d hoped you all learned your lessons four years ago, but from what I’ve seen on social media, that’s not been the case.  Biden is not ideal but he is better than the alternative.  He is a Democrat who will continue Obama’s legacy.  And you have a shot in hell of getting progressive movements like Medicare for All under a blue majority Congress; we do not have that under Trump.

Biden is more willing to listen to the progressive factions of the Democrat party than Trump is.  We will get shit done under him.

We cannot survive a second term of Trump.  I need you all to hold your noses, put on your big girl pants, and deal with it.  Prepare to vote for Biden.

For Those Who Must Eat During Yom Kippur

Rofei chol basar – Healer of all living creatures:

I thank You for the breath that is in me

for the community of Israel that lives

for the possibilities of today and tomorrow.

May my eating be as a fast;

May it be dedicated to you, to t’shuvah–

to the renewal and restoration of my relationship

to You, to others, and to myself.

Then just don’t say it and be different.  It’s not a requirement.

It’s actually really fucking weird that we were expected to stand up every day and pledge our allegiance to a flag as kids.

OHHHH.  We call them....  actually we just call them window stickers.  How fun!

Wait, what are jelly dreidels? Are they like, jelly in a dreidel mold? I am *intrigued*

Oh, no! They’re like those little....remember the sticky hands from elementary school, and you could stick them to windows? Like those. They’re like window decals or clings, but easier to use and also 3D.
