the funniest thing abt the old guard is nicky just blurting out weird profound sounding shit all the time and everyone reacting with “dude what the FUCK are you saying”. hes gay and dramatic and cant read a room to save his life and i ADORE him
The baklava scene is super cute but my favorite part is Joe’s “Santa Maria Madre di Dio” because if that doesn’t scream I’ve been married to an Italian for almost a millennia I don’t know what it does
The Old Guard also known as that time in 2020 when Italians on Tumblr massively and collectively lost their heads over a well-written Italian character in an international franchise

The Old Guard fandom has a problem with homophobia.
I’m just going to be blunt about it because there’s no point in beating around the bush about a serious topic and one that seriously impacts my ability to engage with this fandom in a meaningful way.
I’m also going to be very clear: LGBT people calling out homophobia and transphobia, people of color calling out racism, disabled people calling out ableism, so on and so forth isn’t fandom drama. Also, I think it’s important to curate your fandom experience but when your curating includes blocking and silencing people who are speaking out about real problems, you’re being a bigot.
But, I’m a trans gay man and in my short time in this fandom I’ve seen a lot of “progressive” homophobia (and transphobia) go on unchecked to the point where… I don’t feel comfortable in this fandom. Especially not when the people spouting these “progressive” homophobic takes are given a platform/
Fandom is supposed to be enjoyable, I get that, but for me it’s not enjoyable because every time I turn around I see “progressive” homophobia and transphobia, or I’m calling out that “progressive” homophobia and transphobia.
Don’t get me wrong, I block these people but honestly, blocking is a joke when they still come across my dash because people still platform them despite them being publicly bigoted… but in acceptable ways.
Before we get into it, I want to make it clear that reblogging this is okay. I want you to reblog it, which is why I spent so much time writing this, and liking this post doesn’t… do anything so please, reblog this.
I’m tired of seeing homophobia in this fandom.

Over the past few years, he’s started sleeping as little as he possibly can without dying — his under-eyes are permanently bruised and he regularly hallucinates during the day. It’s better than dwelling on what had come before: screams, limp bodies, spraying blood, blue eyes.
life is very long by kaydeefalls
Andromache tells him: "The Greeks used to have seven different words for love. Well. More, probably. But I remember seven." She shrugs. "There are many ways to love one another, and life is long. We've time enough for them all. It's the only thing that makes it worthwhile."

Nicolò smiles so beautiful and free at Yusuf as he utters the words that damn them: “I have lived and died all so I could love you.”

For centuries, they have fought together, lived together and died together. Nicky exists in the marrow of Joe’s bones, safely secured in Joe’s rib cage, placed delicately by Joe’s beating heart.

one burning candle, one wind-whipped flame by Dialux
Yusuf dies, and dies, and dies, and lives, as well, for a thousand years. Nicolo's by his side for all of them, and it's not quite the love story of eternity, but it's theirs: and that's enough for them both.

He wishes he were Nicolo still, a knight fighting for his God, but Yusuf had to look at him with his dark eyes for far too many times, didn't he? He had to find him a house and teach him how to raise goats and bare his body in the river where Nicky could see, right?
