Inspired By Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes Vs Women, I Wanted To Pitch A Zelda Game Where Zelda

Inspired by Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes vs Women, I wanted to pitch a Zelda game where Zelda herself was the hero, rescuing a Prince Link.

Clockwork Empire is set 2,000 years after Twilight Princess, and is not a reboot, but simply another iteration in the Zelda franchise. It just so happens that in this case, Zelda is the protagonist. I’m a very big Zelda fan, and worked hard to draw from key elements in the continuity and mythos.

This concept work is meant to show that Zelda as a game protagonist can be both compelling and true to the franchise, while bringing new and dynamic game elements that go farther than being a simple gender swap.

Hope you like it!

saturday D&D tip: write all your lore from the woefully confusing world of Academia™. The whole argument depends on a tenuous citation of a guy who wrote about an event 100 years after it happened. The biography of the lich was written by one of his greatest enemies and so we have to treat it as a questionable source despite being the only primary source we have. The translation out of Old Draconic might be “sword,” or maybe it was “thorn,” but then the Draconic for ‘thorn’ was also often used as a euphemism for ‘usurper,’ etc. the academic text they were relying on is actually a fringe theory that may or may not have any basis in fact.

Chain Of Acheron, Helltrooper Hawthorn “Tha Plan? Don’t Die, And Tha Least Bloodied Buys Drinks.”

Chain of Acheron, Helltrooper Hawthorn “Tha plan? Don’t die, and tha least bloodied buys drinks.”

Stout, loud and spiky best describes this Khemharan Desert Dwarf.  Hailing from the eastern side of the Granite Mountains, Hawthorn was formerly part of the shock troopers known as the Khoragad, or Dust Devils (or Cactus Men, but don’t say that in front of him). He and his flails would tear through the battlefield and none could ignore him.

He joined the Chain a while back, towards the beginning of Ajax’s conquest of Khemhara. Doesn’t do well with plans, prefers the tried and true method of “whack it until it falls over,” or, the true Dwarven way. Likely didn’t make it onto the Rosso Cielo because, uhhhh, who travels by water?

He will have to, eventually, but he isn’t going to like it.

Has strong opinions on stoneworking (sandstone or it’s not worth it) and ale (cactus based), but is otherwise quite civilized. Just… Don’t stand to close to him in a fight. And close is a relative term.

In game terms he’s absolutely a Mountain Dwarf Battlerager barbarian. I like the idea that despite the obvious cactus imagery, when he joined the Chain, it was mostly Vaslorians who hadn’t ever seen a cactus before, so they called him their spiky plant (they weren’t going to call him rose, that’s for sure).

I was having a hard time thinking of him, but then suddenly he came to me all at once and now I desperately need to do something with him.

“See? It all turned out in the end. What do you mean, ‘stealth operation?’”

Toes, at only 14 ran away from home after hearing his parents speaking of abandoning him in the woods because of his “witchcraft”, he quickly took off before dawn, leaving the farm and making for the city as any surrounding farms would recognize him and return him home. living as a beggar on the streets of Blackbottom learning of his gifts in secret.

Toes, At Only 14 Ran Away From Home After Hearing His Parents Speaking Of Abandoning Him In The Woods

One night when food and shelter ran particularly scarce, desperate  for warmth. He conjured a violent burst of flame that nearly left him without hair altogether and through the wild and unpredictable nature of his gift, turned three of his toes to solid gold. Cutting these toes off to sell, since he has never been seen in anything but noble garb

Hearing of the chain arriving in town and of the magic user among them with seemingly very similar talents to his own, toes immediately set to getting onto the crew. To maybe find a mentor and the safety in numbers.

in game Toes is a human wild magic sorcerer with a street urchin background, he dresses and speaks finely, even in combat, to give no hint at his lowly beginnings, he is humble but immensely greedy.

why you should not dismiss research unless you rly truly mean it

Internet, I am a queer researcher of queer health and I have something to say.

A few weeks back, a study went viral about the relationship between marriage equality policy and queer teen suicide rates, and a lot of people reacted thusly: “queer mental health is better when we’re not discriminated against! BREAKING: SKY IS BLUE, WATER IS WET”

This happens a lot. People see research about a thing ~Everyone Already Knows~ and they mock it. Now I want to make two things really clear:

1. Everyone does not already know.

2. This shit can lose these projects their funding.

Did you know that media coverage is a crucial factor in funding allocation? When we submit our application for grant renewal, we have to provide a list of news articles about our research so they can decide whether the public cares enough about us to let us keep doing our work. And most research doesn’t get all that much coverage, so individual reactions can really matter. If the primary reaction to our publications is eyerolling, we legitimately might not be able to continue.

I’ve seen some frustration from people who believe this research funding would be better put to use “actually helping” the affected populations instead of–I don’t know, pinning them under microscopes or whatever it is they think we do. But funding for policy initiatives is driven by research. I know you wish politicians would listen to individual voices telling them where the problems are, but that’s honestly not a smart way to direct limited resources. We need solid evidence. And a lot of the areas that need the most attention aren’t obvious–who knew bisexual people are at a much higher risk for physical and mental health disparities than gay and lesbian people? Who would have guessed that transgender folks are more likely than any other group (including straight people) to be military veterans, but overwhelmingly don’t claim their benefits? I’m sure some people noticed these patterns, but they definitely weren’t common knowledge within the queer communities I’ve grown up around, and those findings are leading to direct action as we speak.

I get that it can be frustrating to feel like your identity is being reduced to facts and figures for the benefit of red tape. But trust me, the researchers aren’t your enemy here. Most of us are queer too. All of us are just as frustrated by this crap as you are. We are doing our best, and I swear to you this work really is making a difference. Please don’t sabotage it.

An odd idea I got in my head a while ago that I thought might be fun to share:

What with the prevalence of reporters in the Stays and interest surrounding the Chain, I thought it might be interesting to consider one of these journalists approaching rank and file Chain members for interviews (sort of mockumentary style). While on the one hand I think Chain members know better than to blab, on the other hand what if this was sanctioned by the higher ups to drum up some good press and attract recruits. Maybe even conducted under the watchful eye of a Junior Officer (I’m assuming Two Shoes as the only one trusted and responsible enough for the project but who knows).

I’m far from an expert in journalism, but here goes:

Alright, well, why don’t we start at the beginning: Where did you join the Chain of Acheron?

So, as far as I understand, Helltroopers get pretty descriptive nicknames when they join up. What’s the story behind yours?

And what attracted you to the Chain initially? What was your first impression on joining? Has that impression changed lately?

Has anything really surprised you since joining the company? Any particular memories that stand out to you?

Why have you stayed on with the Chain? Do you see yourself sticking with the company for much longer?

And how exactly do you contribute to the Chain? Do you ever see yourself as doing more and moving up the ranks?

Do you have any beliefs or convictions apart from membership in the Chain?

I’ve heard that Helltroopers leave their old lives behind, but what was your life like before you joined the Chain?

What’s the most challenging thing about being a member of the Chain?

If you could direct the Chain’s next action, what would you have the company do?

What is your opinion on the Senior officers?

Any Helltroopers, officers or otherwise, you have a problem with?

What do you know about the Chain of Acheron’s intensions here in Capital?

I imagined this as starting out like a human interest piece that escalates into an interrogation.

Please feel free to add in your Helltrooper responses and reactions, and even add/expand questions if ya like!

Crows- specialize in treating non-magical ailments of the common folk and prevent spread with the help of vultures. Are generally better at triage than other plague doctors
