Greer had nearly walked past the young woman taking some sort of apparent poll, but the small bit of movement caught the corner of her eye. She stopped in her tracks and looking back at the young woman who asked her a question as she removed an air pod from her ear. “I’m not sure I’m gonna be the most help,” Greer admitted, closing the few steps between the two. “The scariest thing I’ve watched recently was probably Trolls, and I think I was mostly just horrified that I didn’t have enough self-respect to just turn it off when it started playing. It just… sat there and let it happen to me.” She paused for a moment, lifting her shoulders into a casual shrug. 

“But, um… I have to ask: what is Ghostface?” 

Laurel couldn’t blame the other for not having that knowledge -- it wasn’t until she established her freedom that she delved more into pop culture and cult classics. According to her parents, if she had the time to watch a movie that time could be better delegated to studies. “Trolls wasn’t that bad. The soundtrack album sold out at Crossroads after the first week it as released in theaters.” 

“But Ghostface is the serial killer in the Scream saga -- highly recommended. I’m thinking of even hosting a marathon party for it. It’d be a good way to start your horror movie to-watch list.”

“You mean Gremlins?!” Laurel threw her head back, laughing at her description of the cult classic. “You mean you don’t want one to take home and feed after midnight? It was either that or Poltergeist but I didn’t feel like ruining your life that night.”

“You know, if you spend more time walking around in a specific neighborhood, rather than relying on cars most of the time, you can actually stumble upon some pretty neat finds,” Thomas said, casually showing around a passerby. “Hole-in-the-wall restaurants, neat antique shops, you name it. You’d be surprised what kind of books you’d find in a no-name shop.”

“You’re really speaking my language,” Laurel muffled with a mouth full of soft pretzel. “I never would have seen this pretzel place next to the enchilada place if it wasn’t for you.” It was actually a lie--Laurel had been to that pretzel place plenty of time before this moment but she didn’t want Thomas to feel bad as a tour guide. When she first moved to the city, she explored Portland through every nook and cranny. It was rare that there was a hole-in-the-wall place she didn’t know about. “What about local artists? Are there ways you can stumble upon them by aimlessly wandering?”

That’s a sweet story. I don’t have any, but when I do decide to adopt a pet, I’m thinking of getting both a cat and a dog. Growing up we had two dogs and a cat, and I’m just a lover of both. I bet the cat lives up to the name. They are as smart as hell.

I think the Halloween thing is basically my sisters forcing me to watch horror movies with them. I usually like to watch action movies and comedies. So I keep horror to Halloween if I can. So what movie would you watch tonight, that you think will have the desired effect?

Ooh! I would love to go with you to the shelter so we can find you a couple of rescues. That’s the best way to adopt. Or we can just roam the streets until the animal comes to you. You know what they say: the pet always finds you.

Maybe you can come over and help me pick one out?
