“You don’t do scary movies?” Laurel stared at her skeptically. “You’re telling me as a world famous supermodel, no more than a few people invited you back to their place to watch a horror movie in hopes to get in your pants where you would have accepted?”

Brooklyn glanced at herself in the mirror and smiled brightly. “I swear you never fail to make me look beautiful. This is it, this is the look I want for my photo shoot.” She said turning towards the girl. Brooke had a photoshoot coming up and she always liked having her make up done the day before, so if she wanted a different look she had time to fix it. “You think you can come with me to the shoot and recreate this? I will pay you time and half for traveling.”

Laurel would do almost anything for her favorite client, and she knew that Brooke loved her too but... time and a half for traveling? Laurel’s eyes lit up at the surreal proposition. In a normal world it would be the perfect opportunity to gain new clients interested in her aesthetician business, but how would be offer that without having to explain the under-the-table aspect of it. “Holy shit--I--” Laurel sat down, twiddling a makeup brush between her fingers. “I mean, yeah! But--don’t you have professional makeup artists that already work at the photoshoot?”

"What’s your favorite scary movie? And, no, I don’t mean that in a scary Ghostface way, but what is your favorite scary movie? And why? I’m asking simply for research. Research for what? Don’t ask.”

“i got an email last night from a parent and it was WILD!” aubrey tells the other, she’d had to re-read the email a few times just to understand what the parent wanted, she was gobsmacked. “his kid is failing my class, so he wants me to give her a C? for no reason at all” . 

laurel scoffed and rolled her eyes at the parent’s demand, only laughing slightly because of aubrey’s incredulous tone. “fucking milennials, am i right?” she leaned over to read the text. “how do you deal with the burden of helicopter parents?” she asked, memories flashing before her eyes of her own.

“You know, if you spend more time walking around in a specific neighborhood, rather than relying on cars most of the time, you can actually stumble upon some pretty neat finds,” Thomas said, casually showing around a passerby. “Hole-in-the-wall restaurants, neat antique shops, you name it. You’d be surprised what kind of books you’d find in a no-name shop.”

“You’re really speaking my language,” Laurel muffled with a mouth full of soft pretzel. “I never would have seen this pretzel place next to the enchilada place if it wasn’t for you.” It was actually a lie--Laurel had been to that pretzel place plenty of time before this moment but she didn’t want Thomas to feel bad as a tour guide. When she first moved to the city, she explored Portland through every nook and cranny. It was rare that there was a hole-in-the-wall place she didn’t know about. “What about local artists? Are there ways you can stumble upon them by aimlessly wandering?”

they cocked their head to side thinking really hard. scary movies were not kirby’s first choice thing to watch. “um… scary movie 3.” they replied with a small shrug. “it counts. i saw it in theaters and was convinced the girl from the movie was going to kill me.” 

“just because the title has the word ‘scary’ in it, doesn’t mean it’s scary. do you know what is a horror movie though? titanic. i stand by that.” laurel wasn’t that well-versed in all things horror movies. if it weren’t for liv and livvy, her knowledge would be that of an amateur. perhaps she asked simply to gather recommendations. “it was one of the ten movies my family and i watched together back in baltimore.”

“ Full disclosure, I did unintentionally make someone…” she trailed off for just a moment trying to find the right word. “Let’s just go with… a little upset… because they tripped and I took advantage of them being vulnerable and eliminated them from laser tag. ” She explained knowing there was a chance someone could misconstrue that as she had tripped that person, but they didn’t have proof that that is what had happened. It was a dark room, anyone can trip in any way, didn’t make it her fault.  “ In my defense though, if you can’t handle a competition or… ya know… a winner… friendship or dating wise we would have problems in the future so at least ya know upfront, am I right? ”

Laurel wiped the beads of sweat dripping down her forehead before re-tightening her ponytail. She chugged whatever was left in her refillable water bottle before dropping down beside Eevee. Laurel had always been competitive. Perhaps it was due to always needing to catch up with her older sister, but she also enjoyed the thrill of winning or losing. “You’re speaking my language, hot stuff,” Laurel said, nodding in agreement. “I actually saw you trip that person--needless to say they looked like they were gonna cry home to their parents. I knew I made the right decision in choosing you as my celebrity crush.” She toggled with the green button she had pinned to her t-shirt. \
