Symbols of Lord Shiva & Their Meanings

Lord Shiva, one of the most complex gods of India, embodies seemingly contradictory qualities – He is the destroyer and the restorer; the great ascetic as well as the symbol of sensuality; the benevolent herdsman of souls and also the wrathful avenger.

Matted Hair: The matted hair represents Lord Shiva’s connection with the wind and Brahma’s “breathe of life”.

Unclad Body and Ash: The unclad body symbolizes the transcendental aspect of Lord Shiva. The ash smeared on Lord Shiva’s body signifies that He transcends physical phenomena and is not affected by it.

Third Eye: Lord Shiva is also known as Tryambaka Deva, which literally means ‘three-eyed Lord,’ and is often depicted as having three eyes. His right and left eyes are the sun and moon respectively, while His third eye is the eye of wisdom.

Ganga: The river Ganges, is the most sacred river in India and represents the causal waters from which the earth arises. By holding the Ganges in his matted hair, Lord Shiva allowed the holy river to traverse the earth and bring its purifying water to humans.

Crescent Moon: Often depicted on Lord Shiva’s head is a crescent moon, representing the cyclical nature of the universe.

Snake: Lord Shiva is often shown with a snake curled three times around His neck. The three coils of the snake represent the cycle of time – the past, present and future. The snake around Lord Shiva’s neck symbolizes his transcendence over the cycles of creation and time.

Trident: The three-pronged trident known as the Trishul shown with Lord Shiva symbolizes His three fundamental powers, or shakti, of iccha, kriya, and jnana (will, action and knowledge). The trident also represents Lord Shiva’s power to destroy evil and ignorance.

Tiger Skin: Lord Shiva is shown sitting on a tiger or wearing a tiger skin. The tiger is the vehicle of Shakti, the Goddess of power and force. The tiger skin that Lord Shiva wears symbolizes His victory over every force.

Aziraphale once decided to gift Crowley a plant, because he knows that Crowley likes them, and it’s all good, except, Crowley can’t put the fear of, well, himself into this plant. It is a gift from Zira, after all.

Top five underrated characters from the Ramayana?

1. Urmila is by far, in my opinion, one of the most underrated characters in the Ramayana. Everyone talks about the sacrifices made by Rama, Sita and Lakshman and everyone knows about them but Urmila is generally forgotten. She willingly allowed Lakshman to leave her behind so he could serve Rama and Sita and then gave up fourteen years of her life so he could fulfil his duty properly. She is regarded as a forgotten heroine by Tagore because of her immense duty. 

2. Shatrughan. He governed Ayodhya in Rama’s absence in terms of administration whilst Rama and Lakshman were in exile and Bharat was living like a sage. He also slew Lavansura, Raavana’s nephew, and is mostly forgotten in comparison to Rama, Lakshman and Bharat. 

3. Mandodari because she always strove for good and is again for the most part forgotten. She suffered for being Raavana’s wife and yet she still tried to persuade him to return Sita as well as saving Sita from death and rape. She is generally overlooked.

4. I think one of my favourite lesser known events is between Rama and Lakshman where Lakshman claims that as he is the younger brother of Rama he has to serve him which was unfair. It is said this is why he was reborn as Balarama on the Mahabharata so that he could have a chance to be served. I’m not entirely sure how accurate this is but I can certainly imagine it.

5. The birth of Sita is one of the most interesting stories I think. She was found in a field and hence Janak named her Sita but there are different stories about who her birth parents were. The most common is that she is the daughter of Bhumi Devi but other stories suggest that the apsara Menaka was her mother or even that she was the daughter of Raavana and was abandoned because she would cause his death.
