I honestly and truly believe all good AUs should be a little “”””ooc”””” in the sense that good characterisation involves understanding that changes a characters backstory and circumstances will have an effect on how they respond to the world around them
Good characterisation isn’t about creating a perfect 1:1 canon replica it’s about understanding why a character is different in your work and about grounding the changes you do deliberately choose to make in canon character traits
This is what their reunion in Sly 4 would have been like if that game hadn’t been written by fanboys who cared more about inserting fuzzy T&A in the game than they cared about writing half-decent female characters (and good stories to go with them). Seriously, this game wasted a GREAT opportunity to showcase these two interacting as platonic buddies. I imagine him teasing her about that old crush pretty much every time Bentley and Carmelita are out of earshot.
“You’re a heck of a woman!”
“I know. That’s what it says on my homepage.”
Thinking about Penelope
I was bored during the self-quarantine, so I decided to ripoff @doubleca5t
Sly/Carmelita: You think that the only thing that could possibly have made Lupin the 3rd better would be if Lupin and Zenigata really wanted to fuck each other.
Bentley/Penelope: You think the concept of “opposites attract” is highly overrated. And you probably really hate Thieves in Time.
Murray/Penelope: You think that the concept of “opposites attract” could not be rated highly enough. And you probably really hate Thieves in Time.
Sly/Bentley: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of jumping and pressing the circle-button.
Sly/Murray: Your ideal relationship dynamic involves wacky hijinks, after which, hilarity ensues.
Bentley/Murray: Your ideal relationship dynamic is Nerd and Jock. And by Nerd and Jock I mean that really wholesome Webtoon comic-series.
Bentley/Dimitri: Your ideal relationship dynamic is nerd and theater-kid. And you’re a scalie.
Sly/Bentley/Murray: You think the only way that the found-family trope could possibly be improved is if it involved a polycule.
Sly/Penelope: You are the author of a Sly Cooper/Sailor Moon crossover-AU, wherein Penelope portrays Usagi and Sly portrays Tuxedo Mask. And you probably really hate Thieves in Time.
Carmelita/Penelope: You think it’s a real shame that Sly 3 doesn’t pass the Bechdel-test. You probably also think that the redesigns in Thieves in Time were either too horny or not horny enough.
Carmelita/Contessa: Looking back on your childhood you can pinpoint Sly 2: Band of Thieves as the catalyst of your hypnosis fetish.
Sly/Panda-King: Your ideal relationship dynamic is enemies to friends to lovers.
Murray/Panda-King: You’re always a sucker for bara. Especially when one of them is a literal bear.
Murray/Muggshot: Same with Murray/Panda-King except you’re also into BDSM.
Dimitri/Mz. Ruby: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of vogueing. And you’re a scalie.
Carmelita/Neyla: You’re really into BDSM, despite never having tried it
Sly/Neyla: You’re really into BDSM, despite never having tried it, AND you’re heterosexual.
Dimitri/Neyla: You’re really into BDSM and have probably tried it.
Neyla/Penelope: You are the rare breed of person who thought Penelope’s betrayal in Thieves in Time might have actually made too much sense.
Neyla/Contessa: You’re a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of police corruption. And you probably have a hypnosis fetish.
Neyla/Clockwerk: You’re into BDSM, upgraded your hypnosis fetish to a mind-rape fetish, and you’re into vore. Among other things…
Murray/Dimitri: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of a “Barney the Dinosaur” origin story.
Dimitri/Penelope: You are Dimitri Lousteau, and you probably really hate Thieves in Time.
Also, it goes without saying that if you like any of these ships, you’re a furry.
A few months back, I posted a few previews of my full Thieves In Time rewrite on DeviantArt. I thought I'd repost them here.
All of them are set during Episode 0. You know, the museum heist.
I can't wait to fully explore these relationships that Thieves In Time vanilla completely ruined...

One interesting thing I LOVE about the Holland Level in Sly 3:
So I’ve talked before about how every Sly Cooper level is based on the personality of the character who owns it.
Generally, this means that the level’s color palette will be based on the villain’s color palette! You can see this very clearly in Karin Madan’s concept art for Sly 1:
But then you get to the Holland level. You’re introduced to the Black Baron, whose color palette is obviously BLACK and RED.
So you go into the level expecting to see a lot of black and red. The Contessa was another black-and-red-themed character, and her levels had RED SKIES and BLACK SHADOWS, because that’s how Sly Cooper level design works.
But then…. you don’t see that?
Instead, the level’s color palette full of purple…
Gold….
And light blue skies.
Because the levels are based on the personalties of the character who owns them! Purple, gold, and blue aren’t the Black Baron’s colors–but they ARE Penelope’s colors!

Here’s yet another “Behind the Scenes” comic.
Bentley and Penelope both come across as MAJORLY socially awkward dorks who don’t have much experience in the romance department. So I can imagine them going a wee bit overboard in the honeymoon phase just after they officially become an item (and annoying the hell out of their team mates in the process).
FUN FACT: My main reason for doing this comic was the desire to put Dimitri’s final line into a story (that part was the first thing I wrote; the rest of the comic was tailored around it). XD
I'm aware my WIP fanfiction shares a name with a WIP comic series. I wish us both luck in our writing.
This was a quickie comic I did in about 15 minutes (that’s why the panels are uneven) This scene is something I imagine would have happened in Sly 4 if it hadn’t been written by people who suck at character writing (specifically FEMALE character writing).
Yes, Thieves In Time Redux is still in the works.
Yes, it is incredibly challenging to write.
No, I'm not looking forward to writing the villains' dialogue. Or the ancestors. The worst part is improvising their existing lines from the vanilla game. And giving them new lines.
