“Sir? Took you for more a Daddy type,” Luke smirked. He didn’t know just yet how far he could push his luck with the girl, but Luke was interested enough that he’d be entertain the entire time. “And if not, I’m sure I’ve got some poisons to alleviate the stress.” It wasn’t a secret that the Hounds party, Luke however was an exception. He was always seen as the Mama’s Boy or the Designated Driver, no one truly knew what poison Luke used, and he kept it that way, but with Lia’s reputation he knew he’d be in for a treat. It was a brief walk, moving to open any doors for the girl just like his mama taught him. “Don’t play any of that Taylor Swift or Lady A crap. I get enough of that with Becky driving to school.”

Her strides falter for only a moment as she took in his words, a simple nod with a smirk on her lips, “Perhaps I like both, whatever you prefer Daddy,” Lia listened to his words, having been to one or two of the hounds parties. Luke either never showing up or disappearing halfway through the night she eventually just stopped looking for him. But that didn’t mean her intrigue on him diminished any, if anything only strengthened. “And what kind of poisons might that be?” A perfectly kept brow raising at him, her eyes glinting with mischief and curiosity. “I wouldn’t dare, I’m a little insulted you think I would,”

She could see how off Kai looked, hell she looked the same underneath all he carefully placed makeup, but Vanessa couldn’t find it within herself to find empathy. She wasn’t there, but she had spent her ow time beating herself up literally and metaphorically trying to deal with it all. “Stop it,” Vanessa replied firmly. “I’ve been dealing with your bitchin’ and moanin’ for the past two weeks and I’m sick of it. You know what it means to be a part of this family, heartbreak or not. If you’re not going to act accordingly, don’t come.”

Right away Vanessa heard hints of their mother’s Souther draw in her voice, but she immediately shook it off; a face resembling their father’s apathy taking its place. “No one is going to care that Mama died after this. People are going to assume we lost our mother to gang violence, drugs, or that she’s doing time. So either honor Mama now or spend the rest of your life ruthlessly defending her. Either way you’re making an enemy of yourself in your home. She wouldn’t want that.”

Once their eyes met, Vanessa knew she had to hope strength. Though her eyes were blood shot, anyone who knew her not a singular tear was actually shed––just rosy cheeks and slightly slowed movements were her guide. She followed in line, taking her place as the middle child between her brothers.

“You’re going to regret this,” she whispered.

‘Part of this family’ he repeated back to himself as he spoke, a phrase he began getting used to hearing. Anytime he disagreed with a simple statement now, it was seen as disobeying his father and hed get the same lecture on how if he was a ‘part of the family’ then he would do as his older siblings did. Which in Kais mind, meant following along like a little puppy and hanging onto his every word. “Youre right I forgot mourning and recovery had a time limit, my apologies for burdening the great Vanessa Montgomery who tells people she has one brother,” And even at his age, he was as individual as they came, and to much of a mommas boy to worry about being in his fathers good graces. He knew he was always protected no matter how angry his father got, but now? He was out in the open, ready for the hunting and no one in his family or their friends were there to protect him and have his back, ”easy for you to say,” slipped through his lips before he had the time to process his thoughts.

“Ah yes, the police chiefs wife in jail, doing drugs, or involved with a gang. Thatll really seal his legacy huh?” He hissed out before sighing for a moment, rubbing his face roughly. “Look, you keep up whatever picture perfect appearance you think you need to have. Unlike those two, and clearly yourself, I dont care if i show emotion. Everyone has an emotion, and everyone shares it in their way. Unfortunately for myself, I have three stone faced people surrounding me. Im gonna look out of place regardless if I speak or not, Id rather save myself the knowledge of knowing everyone saw me sobbing at my mothers coffin,”

He smiled and shook hands of the people who went by, nodding at some of words given his way. Already feeling to small for the group around them and wanting to slink to the corner with his mom, but unfortunately this would become his new normal. Being in the middle of the attention given to the Montgomery, regardless if they all knew the truth or not.

“Have you even thought to ask me what I want to do to honor Momma, or are you to busy pleasing dear old dad to care?” He whispered, before smiling at the gentleman in front of him.

“amelia” leaves his lips in a haughty sigh as she click clacks toward their outdoor area and declan runs two fingers over his eyelids in pure exhaustion. he wrestles with himself for a moment, whether it’s worth the fight so close to bedtime, before following her out. plunks down at her adjacent on one of the outdoor wicker chairs that came with the place. “you know how I feel about your drinking habits, especially in my establishments—“ the scotch in his glass prevents him from mincing words. she could drain back to back blue amalfis at their local olive garden if she so chose, but in front of his peers and colleagues the expectation was that she remained prim and proper as they come. like she too had been force fed twenty six years worth of lessons in table manners and general etiquette. “how does it look if my fiancé, the woman I’m supposed to be starting a life with, is downing cocktails at the bar like it’s going out of style!”

he knows he’s partially to blame, more than aware that she was equally troubled as she was beautiful before he ever picked out a clear cut diamond to glimmer prettily from her left hand. but he can assume that she didn’t walk into this relationship blind to the kind of man he was either—one from a rigid upbringing, inebriated on power and control, with ultimate awareness of how important keeping up appearances is to maintaining the veneer of perfection that’s been passed down from generation to generation like an antique necklace or a house in the hamptons.

“i know you don’t care what people think but that attitude doesn’t get you very far in this world. it just doesn’t. how many people do you think are gonna want to work with a designer with an alcohol pr—“ his tone softens as he settles on dark irises, had always found brown eyes boring until he discovered so much hidden depth behind hers. a sigh leaves his lips, so exasperated it sounds like it’s been building up for a lifetime, a clear surrender of sorts. because he’s not out to hurt her, only to make her understand. “I’m not asking you to be this perfect lady, and host society brunches and wear skirts down to your ankles. …I just want you to be aware of your actions when you’re in public, of how they’ll reflect on both of us…it’s time to grow up amelia, and start considering our future together”

Lia set herself up, grinding her weed and getting her wrap ready to roll. Wanting nothing more than to face a blunt and go to bed, ready for a new adventure the day held. Everything was stressing her out now, a much different feeling than she had started her night with. Turning to face Declan as he came on the balcony, listening to his words as she rolled her blunt. “It looks like I’m a 25 year old girl spending her time at a bar, waiting by myself for my fiancé who happens to own the bar. I understand you’re busy, and youre working, but I can’t be expected to act a specific way when you yourself are out doing the same thing but your with colleagues so it’s different right?”

Amelia knew what being in a relationship with Declan meant, that she had to be the most upstanding citizen she could possibly be. Keeping her words proper, no cuss words, no slang, full sentences that make sense to everyone. She took more business classes, to learn the language Declan and his colleagues used, having wanted to try and be more involved in the conversations and not sound out of place. Lia had put more time and effort in becoming a different version of herself for the people Declan surrounded himself with, and yet he continued pointing out more things she needed to work on. Time and time again, she had to continue to change.

She pauses her movements, and glances up at him as he continues his words, “First of all Declan, I don’t have a drinking problem. I wake up and go about my life, 9/10 times I don’t drink during the day. I enjoy alcohol, but it takes a lot more than a couple drinks or shots to get me intoxicated. I’m well aware of my own tolerance and how to pace myself after my history. I’ve done more than enough damage in my past life to drink myself into a coma anymore,” having spent a six month stint in and out of the hospital more times than she cared to count before she was of legal drinking age probably wasn’t the best history for the new Coyne heiress. But then again, they neednt know all her business, but Declan did. Amelia understood he was worried, and just wanted to protect her of sorts. But she had been independent far to long to have a father looking over her shoulder and monitoring her intake. “I’ll never be this perfect little princess they hope for me to be, I’ve never been that kind of girl even when I had to hold up my own standards in my family. I’m not gonna pretend to be someone just because people will get upset from something, I’ve done a lot of changing and a lot of pretending with people you’ve brought me around. But if I’m stuck in a bar, you told me to meet you at, and you don’t show up for hours and hours on end, then I’m not gonna sit there sipping water for five hours when I can have a couple drinks. Then drink a couple glasses of water, and then some more alcohol. I’m not an idiot, nor sloppy, never have been. Just an idiot at times,”

“I prefer your mouth closed,” Luke rolled off his tongue in indifference. It wasn’t a secret that Luke wasn’t the most progressive thinking when it came to women, but he what he lacked in nuisance he made up in treatment. In the same way he thought of women traditionally, he understood his role as a man traditionally as well. He only nodded, reaching besides here and purposely brushing his hands against her bare thigh to get passenger door holder. “Uppers, downers… I know a guy.” He let the small cigar holder he was reaching for fall into Lia’s lap before starting up the road. “And what am I supposed to think? You listen to hardcore  rap or punk?”

“But there’s no fun in that,” she pouted, rolling her eyes. Slowly realizing it was gonna be a bigger effort on her part to get what she wanted. Luckily for her she was able to play up the innocent but not so innocent card well, in more ways than one. Knowing that different guys wanted different things, she learned ways to adapt to the different types of people. Watching his hand move across her thigh, the slight brush bringing a small warmth to her. Inspecting the case that was placed on her lap for a moment, “I know a few guys, don’t like keeping all my business in one place,” she shrugged, popping it open and a smile tugging to her lips. “The All American has a dirty little secret, love to see it,” Before finally going to her phone and clicking shuffle play on her playlist, “I listen to a little bit of everything honestly, but certain artists I only prefer few or limited songs,”
