::please stop breaking my heart::
Elva covered her mouth at the confession, not realizing that was how he felt and how she must have hurt him. “Oh…Salem…I…” but what could she say? She had never liked him that way, and probably never would. Just like Charlie she saw him more as a brother than a potential…anything else. Even acknowledging him “as a man” as he put it seemed strange. “It’s not that I don’t care about you…but I like…Harry.” The guy everyone was talking about her kissing the other day, the guy she’d never really brought up because she thought they needed to work on Salem’s stuff. “But even without him. You have to know, it was never like that for me.” It was cold, but so was she, and she couldn’t let Salem hope for something she could never give him.
Did some part of the former ghost think that maybe once he confessed, she would see him in a new light? A small, fragile part did, but he was still prepared for rejection. He was not prepared to hear that she had feelings for another guy and why did that make it so much worse? “Yeah, I know.” He chuckled dryly, shaking his head. It shouldn’t have surprised him after all the rumors he heard but he barely paid attention to anything when he was on a high. “I know you’ll never... yeah.” He finished lamely, unable to keep the fake smile on his face. All he wanted to do now was drink himself stupid but if he did that and Elva found out, she would be mad at him and he was supposed to be trying to do better.

“ you don’t reckon we should change that ? ” head will tilt slightly to the right , fingers moving to tuck golden locks behind her ear . gaze will fall from his face , to the ground . she’s not one for getting excited about festival activities — but there were ways around that , certainly . “ i’m not so sure this kind of thing is my … style , but . being drunk would help ! ”
“ yeah, we --- wait, i can’t.” he stopped himself, internally patting himself on the back for resisting the temptation of alcohol. “ alright, well, i can’t get drunk but i can help you get drunk. i used to be pretty good at it, after all. ” he chuckled, waving down the bartender. “two -- no three white gummy bear shots.” he turned back to the princess. “these taste so good and totally go with spring vibe.”

“no – no, that’s not what i meant,” harlow quickly amended, shaking her head as she met salem’s eyes ( she almost forgot the color of her friend’s eyes after being away from one another for so long, she remembered a time where it was full of life ). “i know, i – i,” she paused, taking a breath as she let a small smile make way, “i missed you too, salem. so very much.”
“what did you mean?” he asks, dark eyes searching for answers he had no right to demand. a brow raises at her statement, genuinely surprised she returned the sentiment. “ the old me, ” he corrects. “ you miss the me before i got all screwed up. ” he really had drank himself stupid, saying things that were meant to hurt himself just to punish himself. it was unfair to be putting this onto harlow.
i’m standing out here in the pouring rain begging for salvation. ‘cash or credit?’ they ask. but my pockets— they’re empty! i’m rich in sin alone.

“I know it’s not, and I don’t expect it to.” Elva sighed, “But you don’t need something to help you, you need to get at the problem from its source.” She knew there was something about Salem and being out of Halloweentown that he struggled with, but she couldn’t say exactly what it was. “Talk to your parents, ask them how to fix this. If Fairy Godmother could dampen my powers there has to be some help for you.”
“No.” He could never go to his parents. They would call his powers a gift, they would force him to embrace them. “Wait -- she dampened your powers? Why didn’t you go to her sooner?” Part of it was Salem trying to distract from his own problem but he was curious why Fairy Godmother, who seemed to know everything, hadn’t approached Elva sooner.
Hey, I am sober. I’ve been sober for two - almost two days now. It feels like 45 years.

“So, you’re what? A ghost? Vampire?” Or would a vampire just be in a state of perpetual drowning? The thought was a distracting one, and was quickly tucked away to be researched at a later time. “Fuck it, just tell me what you are. Nobody likes a guessing game.”
“I’m not playing any games,” he corrected. “I never said I would tell you.” Antagonizing a pirate was hardly wise but Salem always had to make things difficult for himself. Probably some twisted form of self punishment but he was not a specialist on psychoanalysis so he left that thought alone.

“Fabulous you’re feeling better.” Maleficent said, deciding to employ her technique. She let the shape of the petite princess fall away and instead she was herself. But she made his mind think nothing of it. She was Maleficent mistress of darkness, but nothing was amiss. Nothing was wrong certainly. He wouldn’t tell anyone about her but he didn’t need to examine why. “Maybe now you can go get your little ice princess.” She smiled, keeping a hold on his mind.
When he pulled away, a new face greeted him but nothing registered as wrong, he was only curious. “Never thought I would be hugging, well, you.” Salem assumed she would get his meaning. “I don’t know... I still have to get clean and that’s gonna be a pain in the ass. Voices or no voices.” Withdrawals were no joke. Even a day of trying to go cold turkey was painful, mentally and physically, but he knew he could do it now that his main drive pushing him towards drugs and alcohol was gone.

“Wait your dad is that one dude? I forget his name but I think I know who you’re talking about.” Of course Irey knew who it was thanks to the many stories from Lock, Shock, and Barrel but if she can confirm who it is, the girl knew this would bring in some brownie points where Oogie the next time they talked.
“The Pumpkin King! You can’t know Halloweentown without knowing him,” he exclaimed. His dad was the most famous person in Halloweentown, if she knew the town she had to know of Jack Skellington. It never occurred to him that he should be cautious of the girl that called herself Oogie’s daughter.
