Another competence youβll need is cooking. Never did it in your life? Some recipes are easier than they sound. The easiest?
-Soup.
Β You always eat them from a can? You can make them by cooking vegetables with hot water and broth, then put the vegetables in a mixer (or a food mill in case of a blackout).
-Mashed potatoes and fries
They can be done otherwise than from a bag or frozen. Mashed potatoes are first steam cooked, then mashed in a food mill. You can cut fries in potatoes, spray Β them with oil, and roast them in a hot oven, without Β a fryer.
-Pies and pizza
First you donβt have to buy the dough, flour, water and oil are all you need. And if you donβt have greaseproof paper, coat the baking tin with butter and flour.
-Pastas
The basis remains the same, only the sauce change, and there are tons of them. Puttanesca, bolognese, chicken Alfredo, carbonara, etc. Our vegan friends can try pesto, tomato-basilic, or oil and garlic.
-Cookies
They can be done without butter, olive oil can be used for them.
-Jams
Simply cook fruits with sugar. No sugar? Grape jam was done with grape must instead. It can be difficult to find, so, use grape juice instead. It contained any fruits or vegetables available in the season.
A bit more difficult:
-Bread
Bread was not indexed in stocks, because you canβt keep it for long, except crisp bread. The fresh version must be made. Youβll need bakery yeast, and trying to do it without a robot. In my case, it would not raise much.
-Brioche
Same: it must raise with yeast, but it does slowly. Yeast, by the way, is done with a bit of dough you let sour.
-Cinnamon rolls
Still that raising problem.
And much to my dismayβ¦I still donβt know how to do these.
-Puff pastry
This kind of dough is long to do and master.
-Crumpets
I donβt see why, itβs very close to pancakesβ¦and pancakes are easy.
-Carrot cake
I donβt see why either, itβs never as delicious as in Starbucks.
Butter, like bread, is not easy to make (unless you have fresh milk) nor to be stocked without a fridge. Clarified butter (melted, then solidified) was a possible long stocking method.
Β Nearly all culinary preparations that involve butter can be done with oil otherwise, easier to stock. For spread use, lard was once used. It can be stocked outside a fridge.
Vegans wonβt approve the use of lard, but making your vegetal butter with cashew nuts, water,Β coconut and colza oil is possible.
Who say cooking say waste, and manage it. If dustmen canβt assure their duty, and you canβt find trash bags? Perishable rubbish can be composted as said earlier.Β
You can use papers and cardboards asΒ fire starters. For everything else, like glass and porcelain, use a pit in your garden, then bury it. Do not put toxic waste in it, still.
