Description

You own a bakery at the heart of your home village, Berseras. Your older brother, Ryan, has been looking after you for the past nine years. Though in reality, he was always the one taking care of you. But at some point you’d have to move on, right? Start your own life so your brother can live out the rest of his. Well, that was always true but neither of you ever expected it to be so abrupt. 

Having never left Berseras, you find yourself navigating a world that you are definitely not prepared for. With a prophecy looming over your head, an assassin on your tale, a people-appointed ‘savior’ charge, and a tyrant Monarch, you are poorly prepared for this journey. 

Travel to different cities, make allies or enemies, befriend a Saint and/or an assassin, be a menace or a peacekeeper, no matter the choices, what you do will go down in history. What kind of Protector will you be?

The Edge of Yesterday  is a 18+ interactive fiction game, with a main focus on plot and lore. It is intended for mature audiences and will contain scenes of violence and vulgar language. Some themes might be distressing for some, so please understand your own limits. Here’s a list of themes: murder and attempted murder, gore, blood, slight torture and mentions of past torture, enslavement and mentions of past enslavement, explicit language/profanity, instances of harassment, severe character injury, emotional abuse/manipulation, fear, domestic violence, mentions of neglected childhood and child abuse, talk of arranged/forced marriage, religious topics (I’ve created a new religion, there will be no mentions of real life religions), scars, mentions of alcohol, fire, mentions of wars and past wars, guns, hospitalization, obssession and possession, jealousy, and forced to do something against your will.

 I will have an option for viewing warnings before each chapter.

Extremely mysterious with a side of snark, Elliot is the tyrant Monarch’s right hand, eyes, and ears. With an abundance of nonchalance, coldness, and disinterest, Elliot doesn’t appear like the kind of person to stray from orders or their supposed destiny. Though perhaps a part of xem, deep, deep, very deep down, aches for something more. Having grown up without parents, taken in by an assassin training academy, xey have known nothing but violence and strength. Will xey be able to find xemself after spending so long being someone else or will xey finally break free from the chains binding xem to a dark past?

The Garden of Bones demo is very much in-progress and it will undergo more edits as the story continues. I also plan to continue upgrading the CSS and aesthetic of the game right alongside everything else! EVERYTHING is subject to change and nothing is final, especially the worldbuilding.

So expect some retconning and even small personality changes for the ROs as the story moves along...

There is at least one known error that I'm working on where you might get a repeating passage, but it won't break the game. Also it's not currently mobile-friendly although I anticipate adding that with the next update, so you'll need to play on a different device for now!

That said, I'm very excited to present the first chapter to anyone who might wish to play it! I've been working on this project since October and it feels great to finally have a shareable version.

The soundscape is important to the experience I'm attempting to cultivate for you and my beta readers have really enjoyed it, so my earnest recommendation is that you give the audio at least one chance to win your affections - but if you aren't someone who likes music in your IF games or you have your own playlist, you can always mute the game!

If you're hoping to befriend (or romance) the Younger Twin, don't sweat too many of your decisions in this chapter... within reason. Most of your attempts will be deflected by their natural inclination to hate everything.

That said, you can definitely make them hate you slightly more.

If you were hoping to meet the Elder Twin you'll have to wait a bit longer - but that doesn't mean won't get any information about Z in the first chapter!

Greetings and welcome to my Dev Blog, I figured a quick introduction is in order. 

I am Hik (they/them), and I am working on a interactive fiction project! This is technically not my first go at it, but this project is a bit more serious. I’m more of an artist than a writer, not that writing isn’t an art but my brain works in pictures. So this is my debatably first big writing heavy project, but I really love this medium and I’m running on 80% self indulgence here. Plus, you can’t improve if you never try after all. Succeed of fail it will never go to waste!

Premise 

Your former fiancé and heir apparent of the Aurelian Kingdom, Prince Ædan, has married the love of his life, the fair Saintess Helene. As the nation celebrates their union, you are left alone to pick up the pieces of your broken heart... until you receive two letters. One is an invitation to the office of Prince Ædric, the crown prince's younger brother and rival for the throne. The other is a letter filled with concern from your childhood friend and secretary-in-training, Cyfrin, who is currently assisting your father at your family’s ducal estate in the countryside. Each letter contains a proposition that will change the course of your fate forever.

Characters

The Second Prince: Ædric Aurelius

Ædric is known throughout the kingdom as the Dark Prince, not just because of his ebony black hair, but also because of his unsociable disposition. While it is true that his deep violet eyes and usual scowl can be intimidating, he has been nothing but kind to you in all the years that you have known him. Sometimes you would catch him looking at you with a small smile on his face, but he would always deny it ever happened.

The Future Secretary: Cyfrin

You have known Cyfrin your entire life, and your father has known him for even longer, given that he discovered your best friend on the doorstep of your home when he was just a baby. Even though he is the older one between you two, he often trails behind you like a duckling following its mother when his break times align with yours. He has often been compared to a dog: always eager to spend time with you, fiercely protective and loyal, sullen and moody whenever you are apart.

The Crown Prince: Ædan Aurelius

Handsome and charismatic, Ædan is the definition of a fairytale prince… just not your fairytale prince. With his golden blond hair and crystal blue eyes, he easily captured the hearts of the people upon his social debut. When he unleashes his soft smile upon a crowd, there is a very high chance that more than half of those present will swoon. You, too, were once enchanted by that smile, back when you thought your love would last until the end of time.

The Fair Saintess: Helene

If your world was the setting of a typical romance novel, there would be no doubt who the protagonist would be. People say that her beauty is a blessing from the gods, and that her silver hair and golden eyes were meant to set her apart as the Favored One. Helene may have the entire kingdom wrapped around her little finger, but you know that her true colors are lurking just beneath the kind and naive front she puts up.

Hope to make the prologue and maybe chapter 1 of the demo out by the end of May? Once I can seriously sit down and bang out something.

But the overall story will be the prologue, and 7 chapters. Each chapter will take place over the course of a day, so the whole story is over the course of a week.

Trying to reconcile with the fact that ad much as I like them in other ifs, I simply don't like putting personality stats in my ifs. I feel like I have to have em to make a good game but the other half of me knows I'm not obligated to do anything in my works.

As a kalalav (death flower) harvester, you live and work in the holy land of Duutrepia. You've known nothing else since birth. The merciless disease's agonizing grip, your burning rage, and the crimson flowers—all share a grim connection. You don't know what freedom means. Will you ever get the chance to become your own person? But what will happen when the Abyss Forged descend? Cruel, demon-like creatures who have intelligence. YLVERAS/YLVERA CAISYS: The famed dragon rider hailing from Duutrepia. Composed and genuine. Though quiet, their eyes speak volumes. They burn with an intensity of untamed fire. What a curious individual. IMRAI/IMRA RORA: The descendant of a long line of oracles. Though when one first sees them, it's quite difficult to believe that fact. Charming and flirtatious. However, their actions don't match their words sometimes. What is their actual goal in life? KATRYK/KATIR GRERA: The leader of the association. They desire nothing more than power, fame, and money. Confident and goal-oriented. However, their expression sometimes tells a different story. They require something else, something different. SYV/SYVI WYNDI: The exiled noble from Hishuy. They observe from the shadows and don't seem too fond of forming relations with others. Haughty and introverted. The scar on their porcelain face tells a painful story.

A few notable side characters are: ELANIL ARAVBI: Your mother and a gifted healer. She's kind, caring, and adores you more than anything and anyone in this world. But your beloved guardian is hiding a secret, one she isn't ready to tell you yet. NALAEA EKRAS: The esteemed alchemist from Neptule. She's playful and incredibly smart. Nalaea dreams big and has many hopes for herself. You wonder just how many of those will come true for her. THEDOMAR ALTRIS: The fearless gunslinger and Nalaea's partner. He's always seen walking around with a self-assured grin and looks like nothing in this world will ever shake him. NUUVIAN NORVAN: The sarcastic yet talented healer. His witty nature and sharp tongue make up for his short height. Nuuvian takes pride in his ability. You can drop the fear of dying when he's there.
