therapist: so how are you?

me: the entire foundation of mai and zuko’s relationship was built on how miserable they were together, and how they would just sit there and hate the world together— letting their misery fester as they enabled each other’s depression— and I think that’s really unfortunate because they would work so well as friends if they weren’t trying to make their dumpster fire of a relationship work. similarly, what makes zuko and katara’s dynamic so compelling is that they share the same flaws, only as opposed to mai’s apathy and misery, it’s katara’s rage and guilt that zuko identifies with. they both share trauma over having lost their mothers, and both in a similar way (sacrificing themselves for them) and they both cope with their grief through rage, often misplaced. in the southern raiders, they both act deeply insensitively towards sokka by acting as if his grief over his mother’s death is somehow less valid simply because he is a lot quieter in his coping mechanisms and doesn’t project his rage & guilt onto everyone else. katara and zuko have a deep & profound friendship, but if they were to be in a relationship, they would only bring out the absolute worst in each other thru enabling each other’s rage and emotion-driven decision making. conversely, when they go to the boiling rock, it is shown that sokka and zuko make an excellent team, as they balance each other perfectly. sokka thinks big picture, and plans ahead, but zuko will charge into situations, and account for the details of the plan, such as when he breaks the lever for the gondola. in that same scene, we see zuko jump off the platform and sokka catch him without any communication that either was going to do so. zuko later catches sokka from slipping off the side of the gondola. when they’re fighting azula, again they fall into wordless trust with zuko on the defense blocking azula’s fire, while sokka takes the defense, using the opening zuko creates by protecting him to charge at azula with his sword. throughout the entire episode, zuko supports all of sokka’s decisions without question, telling him that it’s his call to make when he wonders whether they should stay another night, which is the kind of trust sokka always needed to receive as the leader. when sokka is about to give up because he’s afraid of failing again, zuko inspires him and even encourages failure, a lesson that sokka still needs to learn, especially after the shame he feels after losing the invasion. throughout the episode as well you can see the steady building of their friendship, and they’re shown to trust each other unconditionally. the next episode, zuko asks sokka to recount to him one of his most traumatic memories in excruciating detail, and even though sokka could easily say fuck no, he tells zuko about the death of his mother because it is important to him that zuko and katara get along. zuko also genuinely smiles a hell of a lot more than he does pretty much any other episode, even though the situation is incredibly tense, because he enjoys sokka’s company, even when he’s in prison. zuko and sokka have a lot in common, a lot of the same experiences struggling with limitations of masculinity and feeling worthless compared to their prodigious younger sisters. and that’s not to mention that they have a lot of interests in common, such as swords, and the arts (sokka likes to paint & draw, zuko is a theatre kid etc), not to mention they share a similar dry, sarcastic, offbeat sense of humor. as opposed to zuko and mai, who are two miserable people who make each other miserable, zuko and sokka are two miserable people who make each other HAPPY

Major spoilers for ORV, LCF and SCTIR

Usually I post my thoughts on @mire022 but today I really wanted to share with you guys what I think when I make orv + lcf + sctir comics (SSB comics)

One of the reasons Dokja, Cale and Yoojin are so interesting to me is how they are inserted in the context of “protagonist knows the event so they make use of the knowledge to their advantage”.

Usually, the protagonists start their lifes after they gain the advantage, as if they are finally doing what they always wanted, free from their jobs and regrets. They got the chance to do everything again. But, often their old lives are forgotten, they become a mere speck of what things used to be and how they avoided the same events from happening. For Dokja, Yoojin and Cale this is different and REALLY important for their characters

Dokja tells the readers how he used to be an office worker who loved to read a certain webnovel. Truthfully, I accepted that he was only this person and moved on, happy that he got to meet his beloved characters and live how he wanted. Though, it is important to note how Dokja is an unreliable narrator. He doesn’t tell the readers his past as this abused and bullied child because that is his story and there is no need for him to remeber his trauma. There is no point for him, so you only get to discover this through others in his life. And by god, that explains so many of his actions. I’m not saying trauma shapes who other people are, they are just a part of someone, but his decisions on self-sacrifice never made sense to me. If he was just an office worker, why would he keep sacrificing himself for others like a madman? Did he like the story to the point of removing himself from it just to keep the narration moving on? No, this is tied to the fact that he never saw himself as someone valuable, who deserved to be cherished and cared for, because others always saw him as a target, or a character from the news, never as a person. His mother might have loved him, but would he have been able to note how much she did as he was always hiding and in fear of being beaten? Maybe some people can, but not Dokja.

Yoojin always thought of others ever since he was born. His little brother was his priority as his parents neglected them, so he took upon himself to raise Yoohyun. Every decision he took was in order to ensure Yoohyun had a good life, he dropped out of college to take numerous jobs to pay for their finances and to enable Yoohyun to get on a good college. That being the case, he never thought of himself, prioritized his future and happiness, if he ever got to live a comfortable life, it would only be after every single aspect of Yoohyun’s life was ok and THAT was his happiness, to see his brother doing fine and grow to be a healthy adult. Isn’t that extremely altruistic, to be happy by seeing others happiness, never resenting them for “taking away your future” or “a happiness that was supposed to be yours”? But, with that it comes the consequence that Yoojin forgot entirely that he was a person who had his own life, his own needs and dreams, he tied his entire existence to Yoohyun because “he was his older brother and he loved him”. Many parents think their child is their life, so they forget about themselves and when the child has their own life and moves away, the parents have nothing to do, because “their life” has gone away. Yoojin entered a depressed state because of how Yoohyun decided to shut him off his life to protect him and Yoojin, hurt and feeling betrayed, decided to live his own life and BOI DID THAT GO BAD. When he got the chance to re-do his relationship with his brother, he was still set on the mindset that it was his responsibility to ensure Yoohyun’s happiness and safety, because Yoohyun died for him and when Yoojin tried to live for himself, he had no objective, no goals or dream since he never thought of that and only spiraled to a bad state of mind. His time of happiness was when he was with his brother, working and hoping to see his brother’ smile. And that is why Yoojin keeps overworking himself to the point he lost his sight due to stress and exhaustion.

Cale is a funny case. He tells others how he won’t sacrifice himself, that this is foolish and he hates feeling pain but, at the mere danger of his family getting hurt, be it a scrape on the knee or not being able to eat one meal, he stops everything he is doing to ensure that will not happen. Although, sometimes he feels pain beyond imagination and it wasn’t something planned, he still would welcome it if it means avoiding keeping his family out of danger. Cale also has extremely good leadership skills and huge charisma, this trait often seen as expected from an isekai protagonist, it comes from out of nowhere and does not need an explanation, the protagonist was just born with it and for some reason his past world did not see it or they had a chance to show it off. Cale, on the other hand, acquired this skill being a powerful teammate and leader through YEARS of experience. The position he was put through is explained by his special abilities, not something he asked for but had to deal with it. Cale, being a leader and a strong fighter, shouldered resposibilities like it was just natural of him to do so. Be a minor inconvenience or a teammate getting hurt, he thought it was his fault as his ability was to record every monsters’ power and attacks and he was the leader. He never looks too bothered by having to deal with huge expectations because it is NATURAL for him, it was something that followed him through so much time he had to learn how to deal with it. And this is important to his character. He still has the Record ability and knows a little about the future of his current world, so he still thinks is of his resposibility to achieve world peace, otherwise he won’t be able to rest peacefully. Hence why he is always saying his dream is to rest when all he does is bring trouble to himself.

I’m not saying this is the solid truth and a fact, this is just my interpretation of the characters and how interesting it is that their past is as important as the events that are currently happening that us, readers, are experiencing. It makes them look more human, to know their mistakes, their regrets and how they feel about it and how it affects the present. They have a history beyond what we are told, and isn’t that how humans work, to have a history before you meet someone?

i want this on ao3 so bad bro

In the Edgeoworth-Wright roleswap au, I wonder what Phoenix’s dynamic would be if Franziska became his sister. I feel like Miles gave Franziska a childhood in their “gifted child environment” and Phoenix would’ve done the same.

I noticed in the Ace Attorney games that Phoenix functions for someone: Miles, Dollie, Miles again, Maya, Ema, Pearls, Trucy. Grieving for the death of his only parent and being whisked away to an unfamiliar place, child Phoenix might set it aside to reach out for the bossy younger girl who is too proud to admit she is lonely.

Phoenix learned early that one way to disarm Franziska when she would be angry was humor. Lightening up the situation when the pressure for perfection becomes too much becomes his early turnabouts.

Since he never had a sister before and Franziska reminds him of royalty, he would gently tease her by calling her “princess”

The gist of it as children would be:

Franziska: Ugh. What is that tone, little brother?

Phoenix: Uh, affection?

Franziska: Disgusting. Continue.

Just as Manfred tried to drive a wedge between Miles and Franziska by making them compete with each other and partly failing because they both share the burden of his abuse, the same thing would be done for Phoenix and Franziska.

Franziska would be stressed at how harder their home environment would be to Phoenix as his own person and feeling responsible as the “older sister”. Phoenix not wanting her to feel responsible for him and trying harder after.

Franziska being furious that Phoenix was “not taking her seriously” whenever Phoenix would be half-hearted in the competitions Manfred would set for them against each other.

Franziska wanting to help Phoenix improve as a von Karma but not having the tools to do so when she only knew “tough love” and thus driving a wedge between them.

The distance between them growing as Phoenix grows up putting on a front just to survive the household. He still calls her princess every time she calls him little brother.

Franziska developing a better bullshit detector due to Phoenix becoming the master of misdirecting demands, questions insults from her father which Phoenix would sometimes used on her when she would demand von Karma perfection from him.

Franziska knowing Phoenix is drained when he is no longer cracking smartass comments. (Franziska would also have more dry humor than in canon, courtesy of Phoenix rubbing off on her.)

Franziska getting mad at Phoenix’s recklessness every time she would hear of him during his work with the Interpol agents. “If I hear another call from a hospital, I would maim you myself, Phoenix “Wright” von Karma!”

Someone asking Franziska “Why is your brother still alive?” and her answering, “Nor heaven nor hell wants him.” And she prefers it that way.

fuck brooding and corrupt detectives, this is the only valid one

“One more thing, sir. You told me you couldn’t possibly have been at the crime scene at that time on account of your alibi, that being that you were at home playing your PlayStation 3. Now, forgive me, but if that’s true, I just gotta ask– how could you have been playing your PS3 if the PS3 has no games?”

i don’t know if i’ve said this before but Phoenix is so insanely strong. He could fully carry Maya, Pearls, and Trucy all at once.

How is he so strong, you ask? Maya would just. Jump on him for no reason and he learned to catch her. Same with Pearls. Maya and Pearls have fallen asleep on the bus and he had to carry both of them into the apartment on his own. Maya on his back, Pearls in his arms. And he was able to not wake both of them up in the process

Miles doesn’t believe him when he mentions it. Or maybe he makes some off-handed comment about his strength because he isn’t outwardly buff. Phoenix just.. picks him up and Miles does not know how to feel

Spider-Verse fanfiction idea I’ll never get around to writing:

Teacher: Congratulations, Miles. Your paper on multi-dimensional physics has attracted a TON of interest from our Science Mentorship partners. We’ve found you a really wonderful Science Mentor who’s going to be helping you prepare your Youth Science Innovators presentation this week.

Miles: Oh, wow, my parents are gonna be so proud.

Teacher: So, let me introduce you to Dr. Olivia Octavius. Thank you, doctor, for being part of this mentorship program.

Liv: It’s my pleasure, I’m just happy I can help inspire the science community of tomorrow.

Miles: … D:

Important additions:

- Liv is 100% legitimately invested in being a good Science Mentor. After all, today’s young scientists are tomorrow’s reality-warping coworkers.

- Miles’s paper was an edited version of his research on small, stable inter-dimensional portals, so he can hang out with Gwen/get multiverse help against major threats.

- Sometimes, Miles forgets to be scared or angry at Doc Ock and starts actually learning from her, except she inevitably proposes something super unethical and then unconvincingly adds “…theoretically, of course” and Miles starts planning how to counter whatever doom-bot she’s just come up with as Spider-Man.

- May Parker has been helping Miles with spider-gadgets and general science stuff after school. At some point, she and Liv have an angry shouting match over who gets science-custody of their science-nephew.

- Miles has to figure out how to turn down a very plush internship offer from Octavius at the end of the week. His parents insist he take it, he fails to come up with a good reason not to that doesn’t involve Spider-Man knowledge. His parents have Liv over for dinner, she speaks highly of their son and his bright future. The family loves her.

- When Liv eventually figures out his secret identity, she goes full punch-clock villain and keeps mentoring Miles while fighting Spider-Man’s attempts to stop her Bad Idea Science.
