Germanic Paganism Sources

I can’t list these sources without first going through a million different caveats. I’m going to keep this introduction brief due to the length of this post, but be aware that these sources have been subjected to Christianization, speculation, mistranslation, etc. Many of these sources were copied down by Christian authors who may have altered the truth in order to fit their perspective. Some may have vague terms or phrases that we can no longer understand because they existed in an entirely new context. Essentially, approach all of these texts from a speculative and critical lens. This doesn’t mean we can’t decipher the truth. We can decipher the truth by comparing texts from the same time, countries, etc with each other and finding the common threads. Pairing these attestations with archaeological records is also immensely helpful and I hope to compile a list of archaeological records some time in the future. You can find many free records and studies by simply typing, for example, “anglo-saxon burials archaeological excavations.”

This list consists of records of various Germanic peoples, histories, as well as semi-legendary sagas and poetry. By exploring a variety of texts instead of just ethnographic works, we can understand the history, culture, customs, traditions, values, and more. These are all crucial in approaching paganism with the goal of accurate and thorough understanding. I wanted to focus primarily on sources from close to the pagan period, but I have also included current sources in the grimoires and runes section. For the contemporary study of Germanic paganism, I always recommend Stephen Flowers!

Samhain

Samhain

Samhain

S A M H A I N / Ahnenfest

Wenn die Welten sich berühren,

Öffnet still die Ewigkeit

Ihre Tore und wir spüren

Es beginnt die dunkle Zeit.

All die ruhelosen Seelen

Strömen aus der Anderswelt,

Mit Gesang aus toten Kehlen,

Zu dem Licht, das sie erhellt.

Lausche, höre, wie sie singen,

Hörst du diesen Andersklang?

Stimmen, die voll Wehmut klingen,

Ein betörender Gesang.

Niemals darfst du sie verfluchen,

Niemals wirst du sonst erkennen,

Wonach ihre Seelen suchen.

Darum lass das Feuer brennen.

Samhain Fest der Jahreswende,

Fürchte nicht die Dunkelheit.

Nur das Gute siegt am Ende,

Beltane ist nicht mehr weit.

Stimme milde ihre Herzen,

Zeige ihnen dein Gesicht.

Säume ihren Weg mit Kerzen,

Führe sie zu deinem Licht.

Colds and illness are widespread during the coming months, especially with the temperature changes and the dampness in the air. Here are some magickal remedies for when you feel under the weather:

𝐂𝐑𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐒

🍁Ruby, promotes health and wellbeing, and nurtures the heart.

🍁Clear quartz, is considered the “master healer”. Stimulates the immune system and balances the whole body.

🍁Turquoise, holds benefits to our airways, our skeleton, and our immune system.

🍁Amethyst, enhances hormone production, cleanse blood, and relieve pain. It also aids to sleep and insomnia, and during times of sickness, sleep is even more essential.

↟ How do we benefit from these crystals? Well there are many ways. You can surround yourself with them, cleanse them, or carefully place in water for a few hours then take out and rinse yourself in the water. Check the crystal first, water isn’t good for all.

𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐁𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐒

🌿Chamomile, reduces headaches, softens the throat, and boosts our immune system.

🌿Eucalyptus, clears our airways and nose, and will also fights respiratory infections.

🌿Peppermint or Mint, cools the body in cases of fever, eases and prevents nausea.

🌿Ginger, prevents heartburn, clears nose, and eases our tummy.

𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑

↟Gargling warm salt water is a very efficient way to soothe the throat, and it’s a method many people use. But what many don’t realize is the connection to magick. Well, whilst salt is mostly used for protection, it can also heal, especially sea salt. By adding some sea salt to a cup of warm water and gargling it, your throat should feel instant relief.

↟You can also fill a small pillow with lavender, or purchase one. Lavender is wonderful for sickness related stress, and has antiseptic properties. You can gently place it on your head to reduce a headache, or on any other irritated areas. You can also either place it in the freezer or warm it up in hot water to help balance your temperature.

↟A trouble-free spell you can cast involves a lone candle (preferably black) and if you’d like to take it as step further, banishing oil of some kind. Burn the candle (anointed with banishing oil or not), concentrate, clear your mind, and proceeded to say aloud (or whisper if your throat is painful) the next chant:

“As this candle burns, so the illness turns. Melted like this wax, cut like with an axe. Remove and banished, all disabilities vanished. As my word you see, radiant health blessed be”

↟And lastly, rest♡

Do you know anything about creating servitors?

image

A servitor is a spiritual being you create in order to do your bidding.

Servitors are used for:

Protecting you spiritually.

Guarding your property or your loved ones.

Creating glamour: creating a certain aura about you, and how others perceive you.

Bring you things you might need.

Aid in tasks.

Some servitors are such powerful thoughtforms that even others can see it (although this tends to be rare or is reserved for long-existing servitors).

Essentially, creating a servitor is put into three parts:

Construction.

Charging.

Casting.

It is outlined as follows:

Construction

You will need to create a symbolic representation of your servitor. What do you want your servitor to do? If, for example, you would want your servitor to guard you, you might want to create one in the form of a knight or an intimidating dog. Or, if you want to create an appearance entirely of your own, you may wish to add features such as sharp teeth, claws, weapons, armour, etc.The possibilities are endless although I do suggest using features that you associate with protection (I prefer using traditional associations, sometimes I even borrow imagery from tarot cards). Even drawing it out on a piece of paper helps you mentally create a “solid” representation of it if you don’t want to solely rely on your imagination in your head. Also consider: what special powers does your servitor have? What colour aura does it have? It is advisable to create a smaller servitor to begin with because larger ones require more energy.

Create your statement of intent for your servitor (what you want it to do). However, be specific and create guidelines - for example, if you want your servitor to help you gain money, you may want to tell it that causing misfortune in order to gain money is not permissible. You don’t want anything to backfire!

It is also advisable that you create a sigil for your servitor or a symbol by which you will know your servitor. Finally, you will need to give your servitor a name. It can be any name you like or deem fitting. Do not tell anyone its name.

Charging

After you have created the appearance and description of your servitor, you will need to actually bring it to life.

Draw the sigil or symbol of your servitor on a piece of paper and find a place where you will not be disturbed. Focus all of your attention on the sigil, repeating the servitor’s name. Visualise as vividly as you can the servitor’s shape forming. Firstly the base, and then the main symbols and features, and then the detail. You need to believe with all your will that the servitor is real and alive. There is no point in creating something which you think does not exist. This can take from 10-30 minutes. Repeat this for three days. Afterwards, the servitor will be able to function and appear on its own.

Casting

You will need to give the servitor concise instructions on how to do your bidding here. See the servitor alive before you and call its name. Then, give it your instruction and then send it out to do your bidding. Never be afraid of your servitor, it is bound to you and it exists in order to fulfil your work and desires.

You will also have to decide on what your servitor will feed on in order to require energy (you may wish to do this on the creation section too). Here are some examples:

Sunlight.

Moonlight.

Incense.

Candles.

Attention.

Prayers.

Water.

I suggest not using your blood or yourself as a way to charge it because this can very quickly spiritually drain you, especially if it is a larger servitor.

You might also want to create a vessel or talisman for your servitor, and this way “feeding” it is easier as you can place the object on the feeding source. You can use anything you deem fitting for this, either jewellery, a statue, a drawing, a crystal, etc.

To get rid of a servitor

If you no longer require a servitor because its purpose has been fulfilled, you may wish to destroy it. You can either stop using it and feeding it, destroy its vessel, or simply tell the servitor to stop and return to you.

Damon Brand suggests that you add a code word or ritual to the job description that when spoken or done ends the life of the servitor – the warning being that it shouldn’t be a word or ritual that you could do by accident and destroy your Servitor without that being your intention.

Vila Is A Slavic Name For Female Spirits Or Nymphs Who Can Appear In A Plethora Of Different Variations.

Vila is a Slavic name for female spirits or nymphs who can appear in a plethora of different variations. Some live in clouds, meadows, ponds, trees or even high up in the mountains and their appearance can be either almost human-like as beautiful maidens with long white hair, nearly translucent skin and green eyes or they can be similar to ghosts, see-through and with billowing cloaks wrapped around their bodies.

It is said that if even one of their hairs is plucked, the Vila will die, or be forced to change back to her true shape. A human may gain the control of a vila by stealing a piece of the vila’s skin. Once burned, though, she will disappear. Though they seem deceptively frail, vilas are fierce warriors skilled in combat and will attack lone travellers. However, offerings of cakes, flowers, fruit and ribbons might win their favour.
