Going by the old Julian calendar, December 13 was the darkest night of the year — the eve of the winter solstice. This, however, changed after the calendar reformation in 1753, when the Gregorian calendar was put into use in Sweden, and the winter solstice shifted to December 21. But the folk tradition still stood — the night before the 13th was still popularly known as the darkest night, and therefore also the most dangerous, for the darkness allowed evil entities to thrive longer than any other night. This, in turn, has led to a number of traditions, but the most important aspect has always been the one of light and feasting. To keep the evil away, it was important to stay awake and to stay indoors with lights.
But to be able to stay awake a whole night, one must eat. Tradition decreed that almost all preparations for jól (the midwinter celebration) should also be completed by the 13th, including the slaughter of the festive pig, meaning there was fresh food prepared already and the long night served as a good reason to get an early start on the seasonal feasting. Sometimes, the teenagers and young adults would walk from neighbor to neighbor, singing songs in exchange for food and drink, protected with light. Sometimes they would dress up, and sometimes they would do some pranks to scare people.
Today, the tradition is still standing: to lussa is to dress up as Lucia and walk to neighbors or family members with song and cakes. However, the act of lussa was originally to stay awake during the night between the 12th and 13th and was called Lussevaka (Lusse watch). Lucia can still be equally called Lussefirande (Lusse celebration) today.
But why Lussa? Lussi, otherwise known as Lussekäringen (the Lussi witch) or Lussegubben (Lussi man), was an evil entity. She often took the form of a woman who came riding through the skies with her companions called lussifreda. She was one of the evil spirits who would lurk around in the night and take naughty children away through the chimneys, or punish those who had not completed their jól preparation.
And it is due to this, in the dark of the longest night with a despair for light, with evil all around, that the myth of a female figure of light arose. During the pre-Christian era, the light was sworn to keep evil away. The tradition of a light-bringing woman may therefore have its foundation in a heathen goddess of light who was invoked during this night. The tradition of celebrating light in this manner through Lussevaka has stayed on in different forms ever since.
There is also a theory that Lusse is Freya, hence the traditional bread called “lusse cats” would refer to the cats pulling her wagon.
Lusse bread is baked to honor Sunna (the sun) and attract it back when it was at its darkest, today's lusse cats still have the old Sunna symbols (the spirals at the ends).
In the 19th century, a special interest sparked in the Lusse celebration, due to the first wave of nationalism and the search for old folk traditions all around Sweden. Lusse, which was mainly celebrated by men or women dressing up in white with a crown of flowers, holding candlesticks and walking around the farm with food while singing in the morning, gave the foundation to the modern Lucia.
Colds and illness are widespread during the coming months, especially with the temperature changes and the dampness in the air. Here are some magickal remedies for when you feel under the weather:
𝐂𝐑𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐒
🍁Ruby, promotes health and wellbeing, and nurtures the heart.
🍁Clear quartz, is considered the “master healer”. Stimulates the immune system and balances the whole body.
🍁Turquoise, holds benefits to our airways, our skeleton, and our immune system.
🍁Amethyst, enhances hormone production, cleanse blood, and relieve pain. It also aids to sleep and insomnia, and during times of sickness, sleep is even more essential.
↟ How do we benefit from these crystals? Well there are many ways. You can surround yourself with them, cleanse them, or carefully place in water for a few hours then take out and rinse yourself in the water. Check the crystal first, water isn’t good for all.
𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐁𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐒
🌿Chamomile, reduces headaches, softens the throat, and boosts our immune system.
🌿Eucalyptus, clears our airways and nose, and will also fights respiratory infections.
🌿Peppermint or Mint, cools the body in cases of fever, eases and prevents nausea.
🌿Ginger, prevents heartburn, clears nose, and eases our tummy.
𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑
↟Gargling warm salt water is a very efficient way to soothe the throat, and it’s a method many people use. But what many don’t realize is the connection to magick. Well, whilst salt is mostly used for protection, it can also heal, especially sea salt. By adding some sea salt to a cup of warm water and gargling it, your throat should feel instant relief.
↟You can also fill a small pillow with lavender, or purchase one. Lavender is wonderful for sickness related stress, and has antiseptic properties. You can gently place it on your head to reduce a headache, or on any other irritated areas. You can also either place it in the freezer or warm it up in hot water to help balance your temperature.
↟A trouble-free spell you can cast involves a lone candle (preferably black) and if you’d like to take it as step further, banishing oil of some kind. Burn the candle (anointed with banishing oil or not), concentrate, clear your mind, and proceeded to say aloud (or whisper if your throat is painful) the next chant:
“As this candle burns, so the illness turns. Melted like this wax, cut like with an axe. Remove and banished, all disabilities vanished. As my word you see, radiant health blessed be”
↟And lastly, rest♡
once again i am begging you guys: make dandelion jelly this year. it's incredibly delicious.
Ingredients
2 cups dandelion petals, lightly packed
4 cups water
4 cups sugar (2-3 if using low-sugar sure-set pectin)
2 Tbs. lemon juice
1 box powdered pectin
Instructions
Cut the green part of the flower off and place the petals into a quart canning jar. (i have the best success cutting them in half with my thumbnail then slicing just above the seed line)
Pour 4 cups of boiling water over the flower petals. Allow them to cool and then place into the fridge for 24 hours.
Strain the flowers well and squeeze out as much dandelion tea as possible. Using a clean dishcloth is better than a metal strainer.
Place into a large pot 3 1/2 to 4 cups of dandelion tea, lemon juice, and pectin. Bring it to a boil.
Add sugar and return to a boil while stirring. Boil the jelly for 1 to 2 minutes.
Remove from the heat and pour into canning jars. Let the jars cool to room temp then pop them in the fridge to set overnight.
Dandelion jelly lasts 3+ months in the fridge and 6+ months in the freezer though I've unfrozen perfectly fine jelly 9 months later. This isn't a good recipe for shelf-stable, room-temperature preserves, though. Keep the jars cool as much as you can.
“i don’t like writing about my day, but i want to keep a journal”:
quotes and copywork. when reading, if you find something you enjoy, just copy it into the notebook. you can copy a whole chapter if you wish, highlighting what caught your attention the most.
definitions. look up on a dictionary and copy it. you could write your own dictionary as well, making up definitions for words.
lists. a classic, write movies to watch, books to read, the playlist of the month or just the groceries you have to buy.
maps. when going somewhere, you could draw the route you took or just a map of the place itself. just look up the place on google maps and copy it. you can draw a little map of all the places you have lived or the schools you have attended as well.
photos
take “notes” as you watch movies / documentaries. write down phrases that caught your attention or doodle.
illustrations and clippings. if you see an image or piece of art that you liked, put it in your journal. if it’s from a book or from a magazine I would recommend scanning it, tho’. it will serve as a record of what kind of art you enjoy through the years.
newspaper clippings from the day.
tickets and pamphlets. from movies, museums, transportation.
postcards
records. you could record for a month what the temperature was when you woke up and when you went to sleep. if you do that for a year, it gives you a better notion of the passing of seasons. you could record rainfall and other seasonal changes as well. you could choose something (an animal, a plant, an item or object) and write down every time you see it.
rubbings of leaves, coins, landmarks.
count. there’s a scene in the movie Caroline (2009) where Caroline’s dad tells her to go count the windows. you could do the same type of counting game if you are bored and write down.
mindmaps/sketchnotes + timelines of books, movies, music albums.
collages
pressed leafs and flowers
your collections. if you collect anything you could write down an inventory or maybe try to draw the items.

t.me/HueterderIrminsul
