Guide To Being The Dark Academic You’ve Always Aspired To Be

guide to being the dark academic you’ve always aspired to be

1. stand in the middle of a lake staring at the way the moonlight reflects off the blood on your hands

2. start using words with more syllables because it sounds smarter and you need everyone to know how smart you are so they won’t know you bribed your way into the gentleman’s club

3. cover your chin with a black scarf so people can’t see the scar you got from turning the pages of the encyclopaedia too quickly

4. clutter your room with things that you bought from old charity shops, so you can watch them collect dust (and so you won’t have to look at that mysterious red stain on the floor)

5. buy a coffin to sleep in (you can find one secondhand if it’s too expensive - don’t worry, that just adds to the mystique).

6. string balls of cosy yarn across the floor, lest any intruders come. this way, you can catch them easily.

7. spell your name wrong to prevent identity theft

8. cut all your hair off in an attempt to become someone else and then send the locks to your neighbours (don’t provide context)

9. dig yourself a grave four feet to the left of the nearest skyscraper

10. don’t look behind your shoulder or you’ll see her. donna.

giving me ideas on how to ruin statues rn

In the town where I grew up, there was a large statue in one of the parks, of a famous historical white colonizer. I'm not going to say who specifically, suffice it to say that it was someone who wasn't worth memorializing for their deeds. And as you can imagine, this statue was a frequent target of vandalism, with paint or toilet paper or eggs on multiple occasions. Now, the local council was generally pretty lax when it came to repairing potholes or other public damage in the town, but every time, 24 hours after this particular statue was hit, the same person would always appear in a Hi-Vis vest, hat, mask and sunglasses, carrying a bucket of water, and wash it clean. They would do it as quickly as possible, but always made sure the face and the name carved at the bottom were generously scrubbed. This only encouraged people to do it again, and so it became a vicious cycle.

Within a year, the statue had sustained so much damage that it was unrecognizable and the lettering unreadable, so eventually the council came and took it down. Also apparently, the person in the Hi-Vis vest didn't even work for the council. They were supposedly just some 'good samaritan' who cleaned it, often before the council even discovered it needed cleaning, so they just let them do it and ignored the problem. They didn't bother putting the statue up again.

Much later, we found out that the anonymous 'samaritan' had been deliberately washing the statue with a bucket of saltwater, which had dramatically corroded it, causing irreversible accumulative damage far worse than spray paint ever would have done. It's even theorized that they were also often the one spray-painting it, just so that they had an excuse to come back after a day to wash it.

The Boy and The Beast (2015)

Following the story of Ren, a nine year old boy who runs away and becomes the apprentice of Kumatetsu, a brash beast. Together, they fight obstacles within themselves and one another amidst a journey to save the world. To be completely honest, I haven't watched any movies in a long long time, but I was on a nostalgic spiral the other day and one of my childhood youtubers TheAnimeMan recommended this movie in one of his videos. My interest in this film was further sparked as it's directed by Mamoru Hosoda, the mastermind behind Wolf Children (2012), a film which I love dearly.

The narrative takes an alternate twist on the structure of a Heroes Journey. I loved how Ren and Kumatetsu defy the typical dynamic of master and student, their dynamic fuelling their character arcs on both sides. Films within this genre often change the core personalities of their protagonists within their arcs, however Ren and Kumatetsu both remain lovably the same in that aspect, stubborn, boisterous and impulsive. The world of Jutengai is vivid, colourful and immersive, in both visuals and character. Soft world building is impeccably done and draws you in as you learn about the kingdom alongside Ren. His journey in identity as he wavers between the two worlds is something I relate immensely to. There's not a lot more I can say without giving away spoilers, but I will mention I love the dynamic between Ren and Ichirohiko, and the unexpected friendship between Ren and Jiromaru. Please do watch the film, I heavily encourage you all! As I've returned to tumblr with a warmth in my heart. I hope I can watch more like it. Until next time!! Amina

euphoria (first thoughts)

17:22 - 22 Jan 2022

just started binging euphoria and thought i’d share some stuff that came to mind a : this show is like visually amazing - like holy shit, costume design, effects, and oh my gosh can we talk about the hallway scene where rue’s high off her mind and everythings spinning? - that was some next level cinematography and set design right there b :  a LOT more graphic then i was expecting, like they really put the detail into every scene, warning that some stuff you may see (if you haven’t alr watched it) can be triggering c : not a realistic portrayal of teenagers at all, could have easily set them as being in college or even like early uni days - idk if its different for an american audience but teens over here do not act like that. d : casting and acting is cool but in some small moments i find it lacking, like kat’s a bit too calm for a girl who just got explicit videos of her leaked, because if that was real i would be crying my eyes out. so far i’m halfway through ep three but i’ll do another post when i’m done watching - feel like the twists and turns have lacked the shock factor but that’s likely mainly because i’ve watched all the spoilers on tiktok.  i’ll post some more later today or tmrw so look out for that!! - Amimi

another important thing to remember is 1) u can pick up any hobby at any point in ur life and get outstandingly good at it & 2) the project u've been working on & aren't pleased w the current outcome so far will not be your last. u will draw/crochet/paint/sculpt/write another piece, and another, and you will have many chances to be fully content w your craft. so you should cherish the joy of making art instead of worrying ab the results & think ab how lovely it is that we're all vessels for artistry and we can share the divine act of creation!!!!!
