Hmm... Not weird, but sweet fact about me : when I was born, my grandma thought the maternity bay was not heated enough and she bought a blue fleece blanket to make sure I was warm. I have never, not for a single night slept without this blankie since that first ever day of my life. So, kudos to grandma for making a very insightful investment lol π When I was a wee kiddo, I'd run around dragging my blankie around me everywhere, so my parents joked that I was helping them dust the floor and said the blankie was my "SerpilliΓ¨re" (Mop). And that's the story of how "Serpi" (Moppie) became my childhood best friend and lifelong doudou π I still cannot sleep without her and take her with me anytime I travel 27 years later π One of her corners is my favourite one to rub my fingers on as a soothing stim (she's become soooo soft there after decades of stimming lmao) and is starting to fall into pieces a bit ^^" But it's funny because the holes there look like she's a pale blue ghost with a face now ! π»

it's so weird to me that everyone on this website is a human person outside of their weird internet niche so rb this with a random bit of your lore
Having BPD feels like being stabbed over and over for years until one day, I wake up and Iβm not in pain anymore. Not because itβs gone, but because Iβve gone numb. Now it just feels like Iβm walking around with my stomach split open, dragging my own intestines behind me.
Iβm still bleeding. I just donβt flinch anymore.
Yeeessss !!!! I'm super happy you picked up on this detail about Holly's ears π I've always drawn her (and generally elves from AF) with really long ears, I'm especially meticulous about them in my design and fanfics precisely because I absolutely want to bring out more cat-like behavioural features in elves. I really like when fae folks are less anthropomorphised, more animal or even alien-looking. What I love about long ears is how expressive they can be ; droopy when sad, turned back when scared and angry, upright when surprised... Which fits quite nicely with the canon than elves are particularly emotional - I design elves with big eyes and long ears because then everything in their features and behaviours unconsciously underlines how they are feeling. I mean, think Judy Hopps from Zootopia : the animators did such a wonderful job using her ears as an acting tool just as much as her eyes and other facial expressions. She's such a lively and feisty character, who wears her heart literally on top of her head on her sleeve π No wonder a lot of people made the connection with AF ! *realizes she just maniacally wrote some two paragraphs post in two minutes almost unprompted about fairy ears at almost midnight* ... Eheh. Thanks for the reblog and kind words ! Sorry for the digression π
π‘ Reluctant allies π‘
I just love early series Artemis and Holly foes-to-frenemies dynamic. Even though they hate each other's guts, you can feel that Artemis respects and looks up to Holly ; and that Holly empathises and genuinely wants to understand Artemis. I'm relatively pleased with Artemis' suit ; I absolutely despise drawing suits with every fiber of my being. ... Which is a little bit of an issue when you want to draw Artemis Fowl, as you can imagine.
Don't look at the background though. It's trash π«

His Dark Materials is a franchise that tackles so many branches of physics and even creates a universe where the main course of study is experimental theology which is all about identifying and explaining dark matter while also adding dimensions to string theory, the multiverse theory, and the very concept of the human soul. At the same time, it aggressively calls out the problem with the state being controlled by the church, how people are condemned for being different and religious fearmongering stops the chance at growth both on an individual and a societal scale. Itβs a franchise where the heroes of the story are two children who arenβt allowed to know the prophecy theyβre a part of, who save the world unwittingly simply by doing what they believe to be right. Meanwhile, the person who thought he was the hero all along, the person who rallied an army from multiple universes to FIGHT. GOD. HIMSELF. is ultimately consumed by his own ego and forced to take a back seat when he realises heβs just one tiny piece of a much larger story thatβs true heart is his own daugher. The child he abandoned, the child he didnβt know or care to know how to look after. Itβs a franchise about finding love even when your biological family abandon you, itβs about looking evil in the eye and seeing your own mother, itβs about good and evil not being black and white but instead a complex and cruel mixture of both. Itβs about the two worst people you know banding together at the last second to save their daughter with their final breaths. Itβs about exploration and learning how to grow through experience, itβs about kindness being shared across the multiverse, exchanging stories with strangers and saving the whole world by doing something perfectly ordinary and receiving no reward.
Oh, and itβs also a franchise rich with fantasy, with giant talking polar bears, witches and ghosts, angels and daemons, and a mammal-like species from another world that travels exclusively on roller skates.Β
And it fucking. rocks.
Thanks @laeliana for tagging me !
Rules: In a new post, list the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
Artemis Fowl WIPs : - Fragments of Artemis Fowl - Pareidolia Agent (titre temp) - Experiments Weird III (trouve un titre merde) - Oiseaux moqueurs
Film WIPs : - Insubmersible - P(e)aupière - Carnation - Ctrl+Z - Couilles de chat (yes, I keep my fanfic WIPs in the same folder as my work WIPs. as one should)
I'm tagging @bittersuite-iv ! :3
For this, the most glorious of AU days, here is my contribution:
An alternate universe where both Artemis Fowl the first and second were on the Fowl Star, both going missing after the ships explosion, and both kidnapped by the Russians.
Needless to say, Angeline would have done more than break down. She would have snapped. She would have gone into a complete nervous break down, with Butler and Juliet unaware of how to help her. Butler was left behind on the orders of Fowl Sr to protect his wife, since they reasoned Artemis II would be safe with him.
In this nervous break down, Angeline begins to hear voices, whispers in the dark that threaten to drag her down with them. But over time, she begins to understand what they're saying. They whisper of ancient battles, of fairy kings, of being buried deep below the ground for the sake of protecting their people.
Angeline has the old martello tower at the edge of the estate dug up, revealing the Berserker gate.
Her madness validated, Angeline throws herself into research of these magical beings, determined to find a way to get her husband and son back. Such research would no doubt send red flags to the LEP, who order Holly to go investigate. Angeline and Butler have several run ins with this strange creature over a series of months, until they're captured and Angeline is mesmerised into revealing her motivations. This is around the time the goblin gangs start using batteries for their guns, the humans and fairies making a deal for each others help.
By this point, Angeline has learned enough about fairy magic to start wielding it herself, becoming the foremost expert on rune magic, a largely abandoned form of magical research by the people since they favour the ritual.
So, when Opal and Briar decide to start a revolution, stopping Angeline from getting to her loved ones, she does more than just stop them. She uses her new power to burn Koboi laboratories to the ground (so obviously, her mental health is doing so well you guys).
Once they get Artemis original and Artemis delux version back, Angeline (and frankly the other two as well) takes a lot of time in therapy. Her husband and son are different now, closer, more emotive. But they're still the dastardly people she remembers. Angeline, however, is not the woman these two left behind. She's more wild, dangerous, cruel, and they worry about her.
The fairies would have happily had nothing else to do with Angeline, if not for the slight issue of the Demons of Limbo. Angeline hasn't told her family much of what happened to her since they were away and worried that they would think her mental health was getting worse. So she simply goes to investigate these issues with Juliet, saying she's visiting friends.
Upon meeting with Minerva, Angeline sees her less as an rival, but a potential student, negotiating to teach her all she knows of runes if they worked together. Billy Kong didn't exactly like this idea, since he wanted to kill all the demons starting with No1. So, when Angeline manages to escape with the Demon, Minerva is kidnapped and taken to Tapei 101
Artemis's one and TwofastTooFowl however are tailing her through all of this. Butler has refused to speak on the situation, but they know somethings off with Angeline. They follow her to Tapei and, once again, Artemis II gets Holly to take him, No1, Qwan, and the bomb out where they are lost to time.
The next few years are truly distressing for Angeline and Artemis Sr, to lose their son so fast after being reunited. This is made all the harder by soon after learning that Angeline was pregnant with the twins.
Of course, Artemis returns, and things go back to some kind of normal. Angeline teaches both her son and Minerva how to use runes, and they find they have a decent relationship with the fairies, helping where they can.
But then something happens with the berserker gate. Someone tries to open it. Turns out Opal didn't die in the fire and has been simply biding her time. Unbeknownst to her, however, Angeline had already found a way to let the spirits free, reasoning that she owed them that much for helping her find her family. Opal tries to berate the woman for this, but its pretty hard to argue with such a powerful sorceress when your head is encased in a magical block of ice.
(I genuinely only thought of this idea today, so let me know what you think)
!!!
There is no heterosexual explanation for this Daria promo art.
@laeliana asked, and her wish is my command o7 here's a little game : can you find the two Artemis Fowl themed tattoos in this picture ? π (please ignore the 17th century stays I'm working on a costume rn π )
I also have a little oak acorn on my elbow, but finding a way to photograph it would have been a pain in my butt, so that's all you're gonna get π
For the WIP game, of course the "Artemis Experiments Weird" cover π
Well, for this one sadly the file is literally only a blank canvas π So no snippet available, sorry π₯²
What I can say is that I plan to have fun with the glitch options in procreate β¨ and I really want to add Selene someone in the cover because Iβve never drawn her before and I really wanna, sheβs my baby after all π
Artemis FowlΒ is often praised for its originality, and by that most critics are implying that it is not like a poor derivative of JRR Tolkien: a criticism that can be levelled at a surprisingly large share of the modern fantasy market. But AF actually had a surprising amount of similarities with LOTR, while not in the stylish sense that most properties use, instead in an ideological sense.Β
LOTR is a conservative work, with a very traditional view of manβs relationship to Nature. Despite seeming more progressive in many ways, AF has inherited/shares many of Tolkienβs views on Nature and society.
Nature is distinct, but important to βmanβsβ society
Different races are fundamental different
Some races are βbetterβ than others
Some βracesβ are inherently βbetterβ at living in nature that others
Humans , when left on to their own devices will be corrupted by the world
There are distinct ideas of Good and Bad that provide all of Reality and some things tend towards good and some towards bad
Grief is the sole cause of mental illness and magic is what is necessary to cure it
AF isnβt necessarily intentionally copying LOtR in these respects: EC is after all from a similar background as Tolkien; both are white, well-off, well-educated men.Β Many of these views are and were completely pervasive in the cultures that these two authors grew up and wrote in. That said, the strong focus on environmentalism, or pastoralism, that is evident in both texts is something that is distinctly more pronounced from the general cultural attitudes of their respective times.
One notable element of the Conservatism of Colferβs work (NB: only the OG AF series is being discussed in this post, not the spinoff series), is Colferβs uncritical upholding of oppressive systems of power. Fairy societyβs sexism is lightly analysed and criticized in the first book of the series, but many aspects of itβs cultural norms-- most notably itβs racism, that is the belief that each fantasy race will inherently behave differently and have some races will be βworseβ than others-- are reproduced unthinkingly in fairy society, which implicitly legitimizes there validity in the real world. Holly clearly believes in elf supremacy, and believes that the over-incarceration and stigmatization of the goblins are the natural result of the goblins inherent character, rather than the result of the regressive police attitude. Holly, while being stigmatized for being a woman, still experiences privileges as an elf, and it is notable that the three female officers we see throughout the series-- Holly, Lilly and Vinyaya-- are all elves and Lilly is notably from an influential and wealthy family.
