as a Starscream fan, i feel like the portrayal of his abuse has… only gotten worse in recent adaptions?

like… if we look at G1, we can tell that the cartoon does not go out of its way to represent Megatron’s (and a few others) mistreatment of Starscream as abusive, controlling, or similar. and it was probably not their intent at all (because really, it’s a Saturday morning cartoon made to sell toys), so they just balanced out the dynamic by making Starscream outwardly power-hungry, greedy, vengeful, and “just as bad as Megatron”.

and although it still isn’t okay, it wasn’t as much fetishization of their dynamic as much as just a reoccuring joke of “Starscream tries to usurp Megatron, Megatron beats him”. it’s obvious that the way Megatron treats Starscream affects him heavily by the behaviors he displays, but it wasn’t really intended to be seen as such. 

but much of the fandom rightfully found the treatment of Starscream (as a character generally) to be unfair, and thought that the abuse he endured being swept under the rug further damaged his potential as a character, as the writers for the shows and comics couldn’t see how the way others treat him is awful and affects him deeply. Just a psa for fic writers who use the “trauma bond” tag, please make sure you’re using it correctly. A trauma bond is not two people who experience similar trauma and bond over it. It’s a carefully curated, manipulative bond between abuser and victim to keep the victim coming back because of the addictive highs and lows that come with abuse.

If you want to tag two characters bonding over shared trauma, a good substitute tag would be “bonding over shared trauma.” Trauma bonding is, by definition, an abusive relationship and may steer people who have experienced it away from your fic. Please spread the word and happy writing!

Whenever I voice my interpretation of Ron being bi, there's always someone in the comments who's like, "But that's stereotypical, just because he's soft doesn't necessarily mean he's not straight", and while I genuinely agree with the general idea of this, I just can't imagine Ron being grossed out if (or when) Harry confesses his undying love for him. Supporting LGBT identities is great, so Ron MUST be the only straight among his group of friends and be mocked for it because the books have taught us that anything Ron does must be mocked or shut down. That Ron is "the average one". That Ron is "mediocre", the "not special" one...

In this fandom, Ron is forced into this role of "big dumb boy". Written to be "whipped into shape" by Super Goddess Feminist Hermione Granger who is SUCH a role model and empowering and has SUCH compassion for everyone (except for Ron cuz lol Ron's not worthy of compassion, he's just a boy).

So, whether Ron's bisexual or not, it's really just to do with his IMAGE.

This warped ugly image fandom has developed of him, of a stupid dumb boy that's just so basic masculine with sports and shit and needs Enlightened Hermione to teach him to not be a mean boy anymore :))) is TOTAL UTTER BULLSHIT AND I FUCKING HATE IT.
