While I always emphasise spending time with nature in order to build that connection with spirits, this does not automatically mean that you have to hike up a mountain or head out into the middle of a forest.
You can connect to nature from your bed, from the middle of a city, in your kitchen and on a slab of pavement next to a railway.
Nature is everywhere. Nature is everything. You are nature. Rock and stone is nature. Gulls and wasps are nature.
Can't get out of bed? Watch a cool documentary or short ecology video. Read a book on local flora. Draw some cool animals. Talk to your houseplants.
Live in a city? Pray to the dandelions and nettles alongside the pavement. Ask the Spirit of Rat to help you. Look up and see the sky. Feel below and sense the earth. (Making a more detailed urban nature spirit work post, will link here too).
If you are someone who wants to work with nature spirits in your practice, please do not anything (or anyone) make you feel like you can't.
the trees you grew up with have not forgotten you. their branches still whisper your name in the breeze and their roots remember the paths your feet once traced through their shade.
Tonight, I did it.
Not officially, but I almost ran away.
I went to the boundaries of my property, and sat in the road. I ran bipedal the way there but got quadrupedal as I continued.
I let it all out. I couldn't speak. I forgot English. All that came out was sad barks, choking noises and whimpers if I tried to talk.
I sat in the middle of the road. The street light glimmering on my pelt.
I howled. For at least ten minutes. Desperately, signaling "please, i need you".
A response came. 4-8 coyotes joined in. Heard my sorrow.
We chatted. For a moment. Although none of us could understand eachother.
They never came to me, though. Got closer, but realized the road is a dangerous path.
I sat whimpering in my driveway, wondering how I had gotten here.
I growled at a passing car, hoping it wouldn't stop and shoot me for being the big bad wolf I am.
I left at 9:30, It is 10:00 now.
My throat hurts. My paws are limp, rough even. I smell like outside. It's comforting. I smell like a dog after being in the rain.
Im going back tomorrow night. Maybe then I'll get farther and explore past where my leash has confined me.
Hello again! :) I had another question if you don’t mind!
Is it true that our hair color matches fur? Like dark hair = dark fur? Light hair = light fur?
Thanks!!
hello, it's not a problem at all!
I'm not 100% on hair color matching fur color, but it would make sense. I've heard it depends on your DNA, since if you're a shifter with unique pigment genetics (dragon shifters for example. I've heard that they come in all sorts of colors and aren't limited to "natural" colors) your fur/scales/feathers etc would match whatever's been passed down to you through genetics/DNA.
Wolf shifter here 🐾.
Do you have any tips to getting motivation to start shifting again??
hi!
I think something that might help with motivation is going back to the beginning of your journey and why you want to shift in the first place. what are your goals and dreams and what do you want to achieve by shapeshifting? I feel like surrounding yourself with feelings of empowerment and inspiration could help jumpstart motivation and help you get back on track.
also, triggering m-shifts or surrounding yourself with themes or feelings relating to your instincts/species etc could help too. for me, having m-shifts or phantom shifts inspires me to want to p-shift.
if you have stuff like masks, tails, ears, or other things that can make you more wolf-like, it might help to dress in the colors of your wolf side or put things on that makes you look like a wolf. for me when I put on ears or tails I always wish they were physical and when I wear brown clothes (bc my fur is brown) I tend to wish it was my fur, so putting things together to make yourself look like your wolf self might help with motivation to shapeshift so that you CAN have your ears/tail/paws/fangs/fur again.
if anyone else has any other tips, feel free to add on!
a reminder that the trees you grew up with have not forgotten you and the way your feet padded along the ground.
the breeze that sweeps through the foliage once swept through your hair and between your fingers.
the moon has not forgotten you, in fact she still watches over you during the night.

Hi! Wolf nonhuman here! I had a few questions if you don’t mind!
What was your awakening process like? How’d you find what you look like as a fox/your subspecies?
Hello! My awakening process was pretty quick and a little over nine years ago. It all happened very quickly, within a week at most and a few hours at least. I came across some YouTube videos I was recommended about teen werewolves, specifically the news reports about that one guy with the long two-toned hair. The recommended videos under that led to videos about therianthropy, which led to a very quick "oh, yeah, that's me".
My subspecies feels obvious but did take awhile. I live around Appalachia, so I live near my natural habitat, but figuring out that over any other nearby region really came down to gradual research. I never really looked into it super specifically until recently, but when I did, I looked into comparisons between different subspecies and what resonated with me.
My appearance specifically has always been instinctual. My human body is ginger, and for me, I consider my animal self to be the same. Differentiating between a paler red and darker red really was just a matter of over time figuring out what features do and don't feel like me. There's a number of photographs that have the right legs or fur length or tail, and those things just kinda piqued a certain part of my brain, like seeing a picture of myself I forgot about.
If you're looking for advice on how to find these things yourself, I recommend going with your gut and researching. Thanks for the ask!
1. Our talismans disappear into thin air when we no longer charge them with incantations. Not stolen. Not misplaced. Disappeared.
2. Our tarot cards are fiercely loyal to us. When someone touches my decks without my permission, bad things happen to them.
3. We have a standing order for vengeance against people who do or say malicious things to us. We don’t need to cast a curse each time.
4. We make difficult deals all the time. That’s why manifestation is safer than sorcery. It doesn’t require you to give anything back for a wish.
5. We cannot go a week without eating native food. It would weaken our ties to our lineage. Our magic would stop working.
6. We can decide not to pass on our gifts to our children. Sometimes they have the wrong temperament, or are too weak to handle it.
7. There is a hierarchy that emerges naturally. Even if there are some who are older than me, they will call me “Ate” (elder sister) if I am more powerful than them.
8. We can try to learn a craft, but if it’s not meant for us, we will fail. Likewise, we can ignore a craft all our life, but if it’s meant for us, we will shine in it anyway. By craft, I mean divination, healing, spells and the like.
9. We recognize other people who have supernatural powers. It’s not as vulgar as seeing a light above them or seeing a shadow tailing them. We just know. So far, for me, it's never someone with Zodiac sign tattoos or moon earrings. At least in my country, magical people don't make it their personality.
10. We subtly talk about the craft to those who don’t believe, because a part of them always wonders. And that faith — no matter how faint — helps feed our magic.
Please start asking your local metaphysical shops where they source their gems and stones. How many western witches, pagans, etc. are contributing to the slave trade and exploitation of other areas in the world? A lot. Same goes for herbs. Ask them where they source them from. If they don’t know or it’s a place that doesn’t sustainably harvest or grow you shouldn’t buy it. I hate ppl trying to make this about accessibility. Grow your own herbs it’s cheaper. Look for rocks in your area that you feel drawn to.
Your craft should not be about getting the most things. That is colonizer behavior and antithetical to witchcraft. The modern Barnes and noble esque witchcraft movement is inherently tied to capitalism, consumerism, and quite frankly the exploitation of land and other people. I’m not saying you can’t buy tools or that you are evil ppl. What I’m saying is you need to think about what you’re doing further than your goal in doing it.
