This was when the Cold War was in full swing.It was America vs the Soviet Union (that fell in 1994 from internal conflict) because they put up a satellite and we thought nukes were next. It seemed likely. Not so now, Nuclear Weapons are forbidden in Space, thank you presidents Reagan and Gorbachev. The shock, actual shock, of the US failling behind led to an all out effort to regain footing in ”the Space Race” against China (CH), India (I), and South Korea (K,s), ”CH.I.K,s”.

Actually America has 22 of the world’s top 30 universities and graduates more engineers per capita than India or China, and we will have resentment from third world countries like the Arabs or African nations that may be left behind.
