Sponsored by Lady Minerva McGonagall and desperate to find a match before youโ€™re truly considered a spinster, you find yourself caught up in the whirlwind that is The Season. Will you be able to find a husband by August? Or is fortune just as fickle as the ton?

Dearest Gentle Readers | Introduction

Swathes of fabric lined with lace, ruffles, and beads filled the great expanse of the room.

Yellows as pale as cream and blues as deep as midnight thrown over chase and chair. Londonโ€™s dreary gloom seemed brighter the longer such a vibrant array of colors decorated the space. Lady Minerva McGonagall wasted no expense on the three debutantes sheโ€™d chosen to sponsor again this season.

Beside you, Mary eyed the fabrics with rapt attention.

You fingered the expensive satin silk of the dress nearest to you. Simple in silk, but a striking royal purple, it truly was a marvel of craftsmanship.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe how many dresses there are.โ€ Maryโ€™s Scottish accent appeared to be far less pronounced than what you mightโ€™ve imagined, but you three were sure to be an odd bunch. Lady McGonagall had sponsored you lot for two years already. A favor welcomed by your not-so-noble families. Or rather, your not-so-wealthy families.

โ€œIโ€™ve decided on new wardrobes for you this season. You will be married by the end of it, if I have any say. Maryโ€™s are by the window and Lilyโ€™s are by the bed.โ€

Minervaโ€™s sharp gaze turned to you. Youโ€™d had either the luck or misfortune (which one it was, you werenโ€™t quite sure) to additionally spend the last few years as Minervaโ€™s ward. Her rough edges were thorns youโ€™d grown accustomed to, especially in her times attempting to make you a reputable lady.

โ€œYourโ€™s are by the chest of drawers.โ€

Sheโ€™d certainly paid attention to detail. Maryโ€™s dresses consisted almost entirely of her favorites: warm pinks and oranges. Brilliantly cut to showcase her clavicle, each dress appeared as if it would cover her breasts modestly but still draw attention to her long, slender neck. The simplicity of their silhouettes showcased the utterly perfect embroidery that decorated each bodice and skirt.

Lilyโ€™s were a myriad of greens, sprinkled with the occasional peach or yellow. Her soft, drapey dresses contrasted beautifully with the sleek lines of Maryโ€™s attire.

Your own clothes appeared to be a quite suitable mixture of the two.

In moody shades of blue and violet, with the odd periwinkle and silver, you were honestly looking forward to donning the impressive garments. Any jewelry you wore would be borrowed from Lady McGonagallโ€™s extensive collection. A collection, you were afraid to say, youโ€™d miss dearly once you wed.

It was Lily that surged forward to examine her pieces, a chorus of thank yous from each of your lips as you did the same. Minerva smiled knowingly. Your dresses last year and the year before were beautiful, yes, but these actually suited you in a way those hadnโ€™t. Three years of sponsoring the same girls had gone from a favour to fondness. She leaned onto her cane as her gaze flicked between you all. Still, she would be lying if she said she wasnโ€™t eager to find you husbands.

โ€œThis is beautiful,โ€ Lily breathed. In her hands, an elegant ensemble of a cream colored fabric hung. You grinned. If this was any indication of how this yearโ€™s season would go, you were more than ready. Jill, Minervaโ€™s favorite maid, entered the room holding four sheets of familiar pale paper. Your eyes narrowed in delight. Lady Whistledownโ€™s Society Papers were a joy every season. Mary reached for the pamphlet first. She knew better than anyone how gossip could be wielded as a weapon, and her eagerness to uncover the secrets of this yearโ€™s marriage mart was palpable. You felt the same.

Dearest Gentle Readers | Introduction

Dearest Gentle Readers,

How lovely it is to greet you again. Our time away from Society has proven wonderfully refreshing indeed, though I would be quite the liar if I claimed to not miss you. Our extraordinary ton has now returned from our glorious reprieve, and it seems there are a many anxious mamas hoping to prey on the unsuspecting wiles of this Seasonโ€™s eligible bachelors.

Last year, scandal swept through the ton when none other than Miss Narcissa Black married Duke Lucius Malfoy in secret after a supposedly whirlwind love affair. Hopefully, Mr. Sirius Black is as unbothered as he appears.

Regardless of the nearly disastrous ending to last yearโ€™s entertaining exploits, the new batch of debutantes seem sparkling indeed.

There is fierce Lady Charity Burbage, who proves to be a bold wonder amongst a meek crowd. Or perhaps one might find interest in Lady Aurora Sinistra, who I dare say is more brilliant and sharp than ever. Even Lady Pandora Rosier seems dreamier of late.

There is one thing for certain, reader: this season will be one to remember.

Keep your wits about you. Scandal lurks in every corner, as tricky as a hungry fox and more than ready to sink its claws into an unknowing victim. Guard your hearts, gentle ton, for I fear what I will write this season will be quite damning indeed.

Yours Truly,

Lady Whistledown

Idle hands are the Devilโ€™s playground.ย

In this case, itโ€™s more like an idle mind.ย

The first week or so of the month passed by smoothly for __. She was given plenty of entertainment by Miguel, even access to the internet, though it was closely monitored.ย

She hadnโ€™t expected him to agree to leaving her search history and website access unobserved, so sheโ€™d decided against mentioning it in her stipulations.ย

__ was allowed to watch all her favorite films and television shows, and there were plenty of books and puzzles .ย

Simple pleasures, but ones __ had quickly learned not to take for granted.ย

__โ€™s room was very comfortable, and stayed at a pleasant temperature all the time. Since she was (presumably) underground, there were no cold air drafts to worry about, and the heat could be controlled at all times.

The bathroom adjacent to the bedroom was fully stocked with all the essentials and plenty of additional luxuries that __ needed to always feel refreshed and pampered.

Her meals, which were personally delivered and presumably also made by Miguel, were always delicious, and he seemed to have remembered all her favorite dishes.ย

All in all, it really wasnโ€™t so bad beingโ€ฆ

Waitโ€ฆโ€ฆwhat?

__ sat upright in bed, eyes wide and breathing heavily.ย

โ€˜Where did those thoughts come from,โ€™ she wondered silently, bottom lip clutched between her teeth.ย

Ok, to be completely fair and honest, __โ€™s situation could have been much, much worse. And for what it was, Miguel did treat her well.ย

โ€˜Almost better than he did while we were married.โ€™ The thought leaves a sour taste in the back of __โ€™s throat, causing her mouth to curl up unpleasantly.ย

But, itโ€™s thoughts like that that ultimately keep her focused. No matter how good the treatment, __ had to remember that she was still being held against her will, by her cheating, lying, murderer of a husband.

Taking several deep, steady breaths, __ slowly lays back down, eyes fixed on the ceiling and eventually drifting over to the intercom.ย

Despite having tried to harden her resolve, __โ€™s mind couldnโ€™t help but wonder.ย

For all the provisions she had in her prison, she was lacking something major.ย

Human. Interaction.ย

Quality human interaction.ย

Talking to Miguel the predetermined three times a day when she ate and sporadically through the intercom when/if she needed something was not sufficient. Besides, if __ had a choice in the matter, she wouldnโ€™t talk to him at all.

Yes, he was very last on her list of people she wanted to interact with.ย

Butโ€ฆseeing as she didnโ€™t have a choice, the prospect of forgiving him and ending this isolation was a tempting one.ย

โ€œUgh, what am I doing?

The middle of the second week arrived swiftly, and __ was beginning to feel slightly antsy.ย

Miguel, to her surprise, hadnโ€™t done anything major yet, and had instead been asking for simple things, like sharing drinks (non-alcoholic of course) and holding in-person conversation.ย

You had to admit, the time youโ€™d spent with him had been pleasant, and you hadnโ€™t detected anything subliminal or suggestive in anything he said or did.

It was all very suspicious.ย

__ wanted to think that he was being genuine, but something in her gut just wouldnโ€™t let her. Call it a womanโ€™s intuition, or her own unique sort of spidey-sense.ย

Now she sat, quietly sipping a cup of tea, brewed to seeming perfection. __ wasnโ€™t an idiot, and she definitely took into account that Miguel could possibly be poisoning (tainting?) her through her food and drinks, and he swore he wasnโ€™t when she grilled him about the possibility, but she ultimately figured that it couldnโ€™t be helped either way, seeing as she needed to eat.ย

Miguel sat nearby, his nose buried in a tablet. He appeared to be focusing intently on something, and although __ was slightly curious as to what it was, she decided against bothering him.ย

That didnโ€™t stop her from studying Miguelโ€™s face though.ย

Heโ€™d looked much healthier as of late, and he was still as handsome as ever. It pained __ to say, but had the circumstances been different, she might have contemplated giving him another chance.ย

Which, she realized, sounded very shallow given that sheโ€™d only just been talking about his looks.ย

The thought exasperated __, who sighed, sitting her teacup down on the side table next to her.ย

โ€œSomething the matter?โ€ Miguel speaks, his eyes still surveying the smaller screen before him.ย

โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆnothing.โ€ __ sighs again, reclining further in her seat and closing her eyes.ย

โ€œYou know, if somethingโ€™s bothering you, or youโ€™re displeased with something, you can tell me. Iโ€™m all ears.โ€

โ€œAside from the obvious, you mean?โ€ __ canโ€™t help the snarky reply. Miguel seems unbothered, so focused he is on whatever heโ€™s looking at.ย

โ€œYes, aside from the obvious.โ€

Itโ€™s quiet between the two of you for some minutes after that, until eventually you reopen your eyes, staring at the ceiling as you speak.ย

โ€œYou know Miguel, Iโ€™ve been thinkingโ€ฆโ€

At this, he quickly turns his attention away from his tablet, looking at you expectantly.ย

โ€œThis past couple of weeks have been very pleasant. I could say almost suspiciously so, butโ€ฆ,โ€ you shrug, eyes surveying the space around you. โ€œYou could have done all this before kidnapping me, and perhaps even killing Layla could have been avoided had you justโ€ฆtaken things more into consideration.โ€

You finally meet his eyes. โ€œSo, why didnโ€™t you?โ€

The silence returns, this time loaded, the air thick with tension. You and Miguel hold eye contact for its duration, until finally he sighs, setting down his tablet and folding his arms.ย

โ€œIโ€ฆIโ€™m not sure. I suppose I was, I wasโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou were afraid. That would also explain why you had my room set up even before I found out that youโ€™d cheated. You were afraid Iโ€™d eventually discover your unfaithfulness, and you took measures to ensure you wouldnโ€™t lose me if and when I did.โ€

Miguel doesnโ€™t respond for a few moments, before eventually nodding.ย

โ€œTell me Miguel, had I not found out, would you ever have been honest about your affair?โ€

He stills, sighing dejectedly before uttering a quiet โ€œno.โ€

You nod, having expected that answer.ย

โ€œAnd if Iโ€™d never found outโ€ฆwould you ever have stopped seeing Layla?โ€

โ€ฆ

โ€œIt was never my intention to hurt you, __.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t answer my question, Miguel.โ€

The man winces at your tone, harsh and scornful.ย

โ€œ...I donโ€™t know.โ€

With that, you stand, turning away from him and towards the door.ย

โ€œIโ€™m ready to go back.โ€

Without another word, Miguel stands, escorting you back to your room.ย

In that moment, it feels more like a prison than it ever has.

You donโ€™t talk to Miguel again until nearly a week has passed.ย

He still delivers your meals and fulfills your requests when you have them, but you donโ€™t hold real conversation again for a long while after.ย

As much as youโ€™d thought you were completely over Miguel, and had made peace with the situation for yourself, you couldnโ€™t lie that hearing him answer your questions the week before hadn't stung.ย

Bad.

Miraculously, you hadnโ€™t cried, but you had definitely felt your chest burn and ache for some time after.ย

Initially, youโ€™d been sincere in agreeing to give Miguel a month to try and win you over, even though you both knew that truly healing and reparation would take much, much longer. But now, armed with this new information and doubting that Miguel would uphold his end of the bargain, you knew youโ€™d need to formulate a plan if you wanted to make it out of this thing.ย

You immediately figured that you may have to play the long game, but a win is a win, no matter how long the match.

Miguel was beyond agitated. He hasnโ€™t been sleeping, and being away from you for so long has driven him nearly insane.ย

He completely understood why you would be upset at him for what heโ€™d said, but youโ€™d said you wanted the truth.ย

โ€œWe were making such good progress,โ€ he growls, having ceased pacing momentarily. He sits at his desk, hands folded under his chin as he thinks.ย

โ€œFuck!โ€ He screams, fists denting the metal beneath him.ย

Now standing, he takes several deep breaths, trying to rein in his temper.ย

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t lose focus now. All is not lost.โ€

The thought helps calm him further, and he makes his way over to the bench across the room.ย

On the bench lies a single vial, one which Miguel lifts, studying its contents in the dim light of the lab.ย

โ€œItโ€™ll be alright, __. I didnโ€™t want it to come to this, but it seems Iโ€™ve no choice.

Youโ€™re expecting Miguel when he knocks on your door, having just exited the shower. Youโ€™re still wrapped in your Egyptian cotton towel, body still damp with water.ย

โ€œCome in.โ€

He enters, eyes downcast before he lifts them, nearly dropping the tray he holds as his eyes land on you.ย

Miguel can immediately feel his pants begin to tighten, and he struggles between feeling ashamed and casting that same shame into a deep dark well.ย

Little does he know, thatโ€™s the effect you intended to have.ย

โ€œ__! I uh, I brought you y-yourโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThank you, Gigi.โ€ You smile at him, and to his lust and desperation addled mind, it looks genuine.ย

โ€œYou can sit it on the dresser.โ€ย

Swallowing,ย  Miguel nods, doing as you instruct.ย

โ€œHere, sit with me.โ€ You gesture to the bed, taking a seat on it yourself. Miguel follows suit, looking very conflicted.ย

You grin internally, knowing that so far, everything is going just as you intended.ย

โ€œOh Gigi, Iโ€™ve been so tired recently.โ€ You stretch exaggeratedly, more of your skin being exposed as your towel slips slightly.ย

โ€œMm, how have you been? We havenโ€™tโ€ฆtalked in a while. Not afterโ€ฆ,โ€ you trail off, โ€œyou know.โ€

Miguelโ€™s mouth is slightly agape as he watches you pout, and his fangs itch at his gums.ย

โ€œI know. Iโ€™m sorry __, truly I am. I meant it when I said it was never my intention to hurt you. I justโ€ฆyou said you wanted me to be honest, and I didnโ€™t want to lie to you anymore and-โ€

โ€œHey, hey! Sssshhh, itโ€™s ok Gigi, I understand.โ€ You lift a hand to caress his cheek, satisfied with the way he leans heavily into the touch, eyes slipping closed.ย

Studying his face, you notice that heโ€™s got noticeable dark circles, and the lines of his face are more defined, both signs that he hasnโ€™t been getting enough sleep.ย

โ€˜Good,โ€™ you think. โ€˜This should work out smoother than I originally thought.โ€™

You stroke his cheek with your thumb, and watch as Miguel lifts his own hand, wrapping it around yours and moaning lowly.ย

โ€œ__,โ€ he breathes, eyes opening just in time to watch as you surge forward, placing a tentative kiss on his lips.ย

Miguel immediately leans in, trying desperately to deepen the kiss. Both hands come up to cup your cheeks, his tongue fighting for entrance into your mouth.ย

Before things can get too heated, you pull back, Miguel following you with his lips.ย

โ€œG-Gigi! Slow down baby.โ€ You swear you hear him whimper at the nickname. โ€œLetโ€™s slow down a little, yeah?โ€

Miguel somewhat dazedly nods, beginning to ramble quietly.ย

โ€œTรฉ amรณ mucho, mรญ amor, mรญ vรญda. Iโ€™m so, so sorry, I love you. I love you. Iโ€™ll make it right, tรฉ promรฉto. Please just let me touch you. I missed you. I need you. Tรฉ deseรณ."ย

Miguelโ€™s speaking so quickly you can only make out bits of what heโ€™s saying, but you get the gist. Heโ€™s speaking right against your lips, and you can feel yourself becoming aroused despite the circumstance.ย

โ€œI-I missed you too Gigi. I missed you so much. But I was so hurt. You hurt me Gigi. I love you and you hurt me.โ€ Here you turn on the waterworks, beginning to break down into genuine tears.ย

Miguel is instantly beside himself with panic, shushing you and cradling you into his chest.ย

โ€œSsshh, sssshhh, mi amor. Itโ€™s ok. I know, I know I hurt you. And I will spend the rest of my days atoning for my sins. You donโ€™t ever have to worry,โ€ he pulls you back, making eye contact with you. His irises have turned a smoldering scarlet, a clear indicator of his arousal.ย

โ€œIโ€™ll always be here for you from now on.โ€ย

With that, you both surge forward, lips clashing intensely.ย

Tainted tea left forgotten on the dresser, and food having long since gone cold, Miguel spends the rest of the evening well into the night showing you just how sorry he truly is.

In the weeks that follow you and Miguelโ€™s carnal connection, you find that so far, everything has been going according to plan.ย

Miguel has granted you more freedom to roam about without supervision, and now youโ€™re even able to surf the web without being so closely monitored.ย

You realize that in order for things to go off without a hitch, you must pace yourself, and not try to rush into things too fast.ย

Although, given Miguelโ€™s enthusiasm, you may not need to worry about that after all.ย

You take the test right after you miss your period.ย

When you mention that youโ€™ve missed your period to Miguel, heโ€™s ecstatic, already talking about how excited he is that youโ€™re pregnant.ย

โ€œWell, we donโ€™t know that for sure,โ€ you laugh lightly, secretly hoping your first try needed to be your only try.ย

โ€œOh no, Iโ€™m sure of it. Youโ€™re definitely pregnant with my baby.โ€

And lo and behold, heโ€™s right. Both tests you take come back positive, and itโ€™s amusing to see Miguel nearly jump with joy.ย

Youโ€™re admittedly very excited as well, but you try not to get too caught up, knowing you have to stay focused.ย

โ€œIโ€™m so happy,โ€ he says, thumbs rubbing circles into your waist. Heโ€™s beaming widely, and an old, mostly dead part of you stirs at the sight. Now, you just plaster on a smile of your own, trying not to let your distaste be known.ย

โ€œAs am I. Oh! I canโ€™t wait to begin shopping for the baby. And setting up his room. I know itโ€™s still so early, but Iโ€™m just so excited.โ€ You lay the enthusiasm on thick, even though you are genuinely elated.ย

Miguel shakes his head, still smiling, though not as widely.ย

โ€œNonsense, youโ€™re right. It doesnโ€™t matter how far along you are, we should begin making all the necessary preparations. Thereโ€™s doctorโ€™s visits and vitamins, and weโ€™ll have to start watching your dietโ€ฆโ€ Miguel trails off, turning away from you as he begins pacing.ย

You watch momentarily, before a thought strikes you. You canโ€™t gauge whether or not itโ€™s too early to attempt this, but you figure it couldnโ€™t hurt to try.ย

โ€œGigi love?โ€

The man immediately pauses, walking towards you with outstretched hands. His glow is visible from hearing you address him in such a way.ย

โ€œYes my love? What is it?โ€

โ€˜Alright, here goes.โ€™ You pout, looking down and to the side, appearing shy.ย

โ€œI was thinking. With me being pregnant and all the work that needs to be done, and for as lovely as my room is, donโ€™t you think Iโ€™ll need a little more space? I donโ€™t mean to sound demanding, I just worry that being cooped up wonโ€™t be good for me and our baby.โ€ You place your hand on your tummy, grinning to yourself as Miguelโ€™s eyes closely watch the movement.ย

โ€œAnd I,โ€ you begin, intending to hammer the final nail into the coffin. โ€œI want to be with you. Itโ€™s so lonely in my room without you, and the baby needs his daddy.โ€ You give him a bashful smile, and you can almost physically see when Miguelโ€™s already fragile resolve shatters.ย

โ€œOf course, absolutely. Anything you need, anything you want. Daddy will take care of it for you.โ€ You accept his kiss and casually return it, one thought sounding in your head.ย

โ€˜Checkmate.

Miguel canโ€™t believe things worked out better than he ever could have imagined.ย

Layla is gone and the society still doesnโ€™t know she even existed, you have seemingly forgiven him and now youโ€™re even pregnant with his baby.ย

He knows he made a huge mistake in his affair with the Spiderwoman, and he truly, truly wants to earn the right to call himself your husband again. He now fully intends to be the best husband and father in a way he wasnโ€™t before.ย

Heโ€™s so caught up in his newly acquired perfect, happy ending, that he doesnโ€™t notice himself becoming much more lenient with you. He figures that youโ€™re trustworthy enough, and that you canโ€™t possibly want to leave him now- youโ€™re pregnant with his son after all!ย

Heโ€™s especially willing now to give you anything you want, and he easily bends to your will- so long as youโ€™re pleased, he is as well.ย

Everything is perfect.ย

And thatโ€™s exactly what you would have him believe.

Itโ€™s been a few months now, and youโ€™ve finally begun to show.ย

Miguel waits on you hand and foot now, answering to your every beck and call.ย

Having to grin and bear it hasnโ€™t been quite as terrible as you thought, and Miguelโ€™s made it surprisingly easy to get what you want.ย

You feel a little bad about essentially abusing his already fragile psyche for your benefit, and you definitely never wanted to have to use your beloved baby boy as a manipulation tool, but you figured that once you were finally free of Miguel and he was, hopefully, locked away getting the help he clearly needed, it would all be worth it.ย

Now itโ€™s the evening time, and you sit in your familiar swinging chair, on a perch overlooking the city, hands cradling your swollen tummy. You sent Miguel to fetch you something to drink, all while you contemplate your next move.ย

You figure itโ€™s been long enough, and now you can enact the final stages of your plan.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry my love,โ€ you speak to your belly, โ€œmommyโ€™s gonna keep you safe. She promises.โ€

You hear Miguel return just as you finish speaking, in his hands yet another tray. You must admit, youโ€™ve become quite fond of his tea; youโ€™re not sure how he makes it, but itโ€™s always delicious.ย

โ€œThank you, my love,โ€ you smile at Miguel as he hands you your drink, watching as his eyes soften even further.ย

โ€œFue mi placer,โ€ he speaks in a low tone, kneeling down to place kisses across the taut skin of your stomach.

โ€œHello, my son. I hope youโ€™ve been treating mommy nicely. Donโ€™t kick too hard now.โ€ You both chuckle at that.ย

โ€œHow are you feeling, mi vida?โ€ Miguel takes a seat next to you, scooting closer and resting a hand on your tummy.ย

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ you breathe out through a sigh, casually resting your hand over Miguelโ€™s. You swear you can hear the man purr at the action.ย

โ€œOur little one has been behaving well. Heโ€™s only kicked once or twice in the last few hours and not too hard, so itโ€™s been manageable. Iโ€™ve been feeling a little tired though.โ€ You yawn this time, and Miguel stands.ย

โ€œThen let me carry you to bed. You should be getting plenty of rest.โ€ He offers you his hand, which you take and carefully stand.ย

โ€œBefore my midday nap though, Iโ€™ve been wondering,โ€ you tilt your head, laughing internally as Miguel subconsciously follows the motion. โ€œYouโ€™ve never really shown me around the complex, not the upper portion anyway. Baby and I are curious as to what you spend all your time doing around here.โ€

At your words, Miguel looks hesitant, and you worry you may have pushed too far, before he perks back up, and you relax.ย

โ€œWell, why donโ€™t I show you? Come with me.โ€ย

He leads you to his lab, showing you all the different projects and experiments heโ€™s currently working on. He also shows you his surveillance station, and youโ€™re amazed by all the different things you see on the numerous screens.ย

โ€œAre..are these different universes?โ€ย

Miguel nods, expression hardening as he watches events play out on a few of the screens.ย

โ€œYes. I mostly spend my time here monitoring these different timelines, making sure there are no anomalies or abnormal happenings. If and when there are, I and the other members of the Spider Society rectify the issue swiftly and cautiously.โ€ย

You continue studying the screens as he speaks, watching in amazement as people move and go about their lives.ย

โ€œWow,โ€ you whisper, turning to Miguel. Walking up to him, you place a hand on his cheek, smiling as he leans into the touch.ย

โ€œI understand now. You truly are a hero. I just know our baby boy already finds you so amazing.โ€ You lean up and forward, placing a sweet kiss on Miguelโ€™s lips which he, of course, readily returns. โ€œJust like I do.โ€ย

Miguelโ€™s eyes shoot scarlet, and you chuckle.ย

โ€œNot so fast papi, mama is still tired. Which, speaking of,โ€ you turn, taking a seat on the chair nearest the surveillance station.ย

โ€œWould you be a dear and run me a bath please love? I think Iโ€™m about ready to call it a day.โ€

Miguel nods, beginning to turn before addressing you. โ€œYou coming?โ€

You shake your head, eyes fixated on the screens. โ€œCome for me when youโ€™re done, yeah? This is so fascinating,โ€ you gesture to the screens, โ€œI kind of want to stay here and continue observing.โ€ You pause, giving him a shy look. โ€œIfโ€ฆthatโ€™s alright with you?โ€

Miguel pauses for only a moment, before nodding.

โ€œNingรบn problema, mi amor. Iโ€™ll fetch you once the waterโ€™s done.โ€ย

โ€œThank you, love. Youโ€™ll join me as well, right?โ€ You bat your eyelashes at him, and you can see his irises tinge scarlet before he nods and hurries off.ย

You wait until you can no longer hear his footsteps, before quickly and quietly standing and making your way over to the surveillance station. You search around the different buttons and knobs on the panel before you find a row of buttons, each having a different name printed above it.ย

They appear to be the names of different members of the Spider Society, and seeing as thereโ€™s only a few, you figure that these must be some of the most important characters.ย

You check the door again just to be sure, before pressing the button for Peter B. You hope his morality will override his allegiance to Miguel and that ultimately, he can help you.ย

The button blinks red rhythmically, and initially youโ€™re afraid he wonโ€™t answer, until you hear what sounds like ruffling, and then a manโ€™s voice say, โ€œHello?โ€

Youโ€™re a little taken aback, and unable to speak for a few seconds before he repeats himself.ย

โ€œUh, h-hello?โ€ย

Thereโ€™s silence, before Peter speaks again.ย

โ€œOh my God, __? Is that you?โ€

You breathe a sigh of relief, hand subconsciously coming up to rub your belly.ย

โ€œYes Peter, itโ€™s me.โ€

โ€œLong time no speak, __. Iโ€™ve wondered where youโ€™ve been. And not just me, but the others as well. Miguel told us you had gone to visit family but-...โ€

You hate to cut him off, but you know your time is limited.ย

โ€œSorry Peter, but Miguel was lying. Look, I donโ€™t have time to explain the full story but I need your help.โ€

Thereโ€™s a pause, and you pray he can hear the sincerity and desperation in your voice.ย

Apparently he can, because he sounds much more stern when he speaks next.ย

โ€œLet me know what I need to do.โ€ย

You smile widely, on the verge of tears.ย

โ€˜Finally!โ€™ You think. โ€˜Weโ€™re almost safe, baby boy.โ€™

You regale Peter with a very condensed version of your tale, thankful that he listens quietly the entire time. You also give him a brief rundown of your plan, hoping that he can fulfill his part.

โ€œI sent him to run a bath for me but heโ€™ll be back any second. Do you think you can do it?โ€

โ€œOf course. Just hang tight __, weโ€™re gonna get you out of there.โ€ย

Tears freely fall now, and you thank him before the call ends.ย

And just in time too, as not a minute later Miguel rounds the corner, looking none the wiser.ย

Youโ€™ve just made it back to your seat in time, and wiped away any remaining tears.ย

โ€œMi amor, the bath is ready. Iโ€™ve even got a little surprise for you waiting.โ€ย

You smile, standing when Miguel reaches for your hand.ย

โ€œSounds lovely. Lead the way?โ€ย

Miguel grins, taking your hand and pulling you along behind him.ย

โ€˜Iโ€™m counting on you Peter,โ€™ you think as you are led away from the lab.ย

โ‚ŠหšโŠนหš ๐™š This Is Awkward..

It was now nearing the end of the school yearโ€”even if there was still a month to go. James could now be in the same room as you without glaring daggers at whoever you were talking to. Though he told himself he was over you, he knew deep down that the feelings never faded.

He told himself it didnโ€™t matter. He told himself he was fine. And yet, every time he caught sight of you, every time your laughter reached his ears from across the room, it was as if someone had set fire to his resolve.

He wanted to talk to you so badly it was almost pathetic. But it was like the universe itself was conspiring against himโ€”or, more specifically, like Finn Laurier had developed some sort of sixth sense for Jamesโ€™s intentions.

Because every single time James gathered enough courage, every time he braced himself to walk over to you, Finn would appear out of nowhere. Whether it was in the Great Hall, the library, or even during Quidditch practice, Finn always seemed to materialize by your side at precisely the wrong moment, stealing away your attention and leaving James feeling like the outsider in his own story.

It was infuriating.

โ€œMate, youโ€™re grinding your teeth,โ€ Sirius remarked casually one afternoon as they sat under the beech tree by the lake.

James startled, realizing with some embarrassment that Sirius was right. He quickly unclenched his jaw and let out a frustrated sigh.

โ€œSorry,โ€ he muttered, running a hand through his messy hair. โ€œIโ€™m justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJust what?โ€ Sirius prompted, raising an eyebrow.

โ€œNothing,โ€ James lied, though his voice betrayed him.

Sirius gave him a knowing look. โ€œIf this is about her again, justโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not about her,โ€ James interrupted quickly, though he winced as the words left his mouth. He knew Sirius wouldnโ€™t believe him, and he wasnโ€™t sure he even believed himself anymore.

Sirius sighed, shaking his head. โ€œProngs, youโ€™re going to drive yourself mad if you keep this up. Just talk to her already.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve tried!โ€ James snapped, louder than he intended. He lowered his voice and added, โ€œIโ€™ve tried, but every bloody time, Finn shows up. Itโ€™s like heโ€™s got a bloody tracker on her or something.โ€

Remus, who had been quietly reading nearby, finally chimed in. โ€œYou know, maybe youโ€™re overthinking this,โ€ he said, not looking up from his book.

โ€œHow could I possibly be overthinking this?โ€ James demanded, throwing his hands up in exasperation.

โ€œMaybe Finnโ€™s not doing it on purpose,โ€ Remus suggested calmly. โ€œMaybe itโ€™s just bad timing.โ€

โ€œBad timing?โ€ James repeated incredulously. โ€œBad timing doesnโ€™t happen this often, Moony. This is a pattern.โ€

Remus gave him a skeptical look but didnโ€™t argue further.

James leaned back against the tree trunk, closing his eyes and letting out a long breath. He hated how much this was bothering him. He hated how much control this entire situation had over him.

But most of all, he hated the thought that you might actually be happy with Finn.

It wasnโ€™t that he thought Finn was a bad guyโ€”quite the opposite, really. Finn was charming, talented, and annoyingly good at everything he did. He was the kind of guy parents adored, the kind of guy professors went out of their way to praise. And worst of all, he was the kind of guy who could make you smile in a way James had only dreamed of.

James opened his eyes, staring up at the branches overhead. โ€œMaybe I should just give up,โ€ he muttered.

Sirius snorted. โ€œYeah, right. Thatโ€™s the most ridiculous thing youโ€™ve said all day.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m serious,โ€ James insisted.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m Sirius,โ€ Sirius quipped, smirking.

James groaned, throwing a small pebble in his direction. โ€œNot the time for jokes.โ€

โ€œFine, fine,โ€ Sirius said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. โ€œBut seriously, youโ€™re not giving up. Youโ€™re James Potter, remember? Stubborn, arrogant, never-takes-no-for-an-answer James Potter. You donโ€™t give up on things you care about.โ€

James hesitated, staring at the rippling water of the Black Lake. He wanted to believe Sirius. He wanted to believe that there was still a chance, that you werenโ€™t as far out of reach as you seemed.

But as he watched you across the courtyard later that day, standing beside Finn and laughing at something he said, James couldnโ€™t shake the feeling that maybe, just maybe, it was too late.

But his doubt soon melted into something far more unsettling when he noticed your gaze shift. For the first time in what felt like forever, your attention wasnโ€™t on Finn Laurierโ€”it was on him.

James felt like he might throw up.

His heartbeat thundered in his ears, and his hands fidgeted with the hem of his robes as he quickly looked away. In fact, he didnโ€™t just look away; he turned his entire body in the opposite direction, hoping to mask the flush rising to his cheeks.

โ€œCโ€™mon, James, youโ€™ve got a Quidditch game to win today! Channel all that anger youโ€™ve got towards Laurier into winning us the Cup!โ€ Sirius said, clapping a hand on Jamesโ€™s shoulder with his trademark grin.

James gave a faint nod, trying to let Siriusโ€™s words sink in. He wasnโ€™t sure if it would work, but he had to admitโ€”focusing on Quidditch might be better than brooding.

As the match began, Siriusโ€™s advice started to help. Flying through the air, the roar of the crowd, and the adrenaline coursing through his veins almost made him forget the mess he was tangled in. Quidditch always had a way of making the weight on his shoulders feel lighter.

Almost.

At first, he wasnโ€™t paying much attention to the game. His mind wandered back to you, back to everything that had gone wrong. He thought about what he would say, how he could even begin to fix things. And, like always, he couldnโ€™t resist scanning the crowd for you.

Even in the middle of a fight, even when he swore to himself that he was done, James always looked for you in the stands.

And he found youโ€”right where he didnโ€™t want to.

You were sitting with Finn Laurier, your hand clasped in his. Jamesโ€™s stomach twisted painfully at the sight, and he forced himself to look away, though the image burned into his mind.

Of course. Finn fucking Laurier.

He sighed, his grip tightening on his broomstick. There was no point in hoping anymore. Whatever chance heโ€™d hadโ€”if heโ€™d ever had oneโ€”was gone now. Maybe heโ€™d already been downgraded in your life: a friend at best, a stranger at worst. The thought stung, and James shoved it down, refusing to dwell on it any longer.

And then, something golden caught the corner of his eye.

The Snitch.

For the first time all game, Jamesโ€™s focus snapped into place. He leaned forward on his broom, his heart poundingโ€”not from heartbreak this time, but from the sheer rush of competition. If nothing else, he could still win this. He could still bring home the Cup.

James shot after the Snitch with everything he had, the rush of wind against his face only fueling his determination. The crowd roared, but their voices blurred into the background. His world narrowed to one thing: the golden glimmer darting just ahead.

The Hufflepuff Seeker was hot on his trail, but James barely registered them. This was his moment. The Snitch veered sharply to the right, and James followed, his reflexes razor-sharp. He could feel the weight of his emotionsโ€”anger, heartbreak, frustrationโ€”all pouring into this chase.

The Snitch dipped low, skimming just above the grass, and James dove after it, his fingers outstretched. The Hufflepuff Seeker was closing in fast, but James didnโ€™t care. He pushed his broom harder, faster, his body leaning forward so much it felt like he might fall off.

And then, his fingers closed around the Snitch.

The Gryffindor stands erupted into cheers, deafening and jubilant. The sound echoed across the pitch as James pulled up, the Snitch held high in triumph. For the first time all week, a genuine smile broke across his face.

Heโ€™d done it.

Back on the ground, his teammates swarmed him, yelling and celebrating as they lifted him off the ground in a flurry of hugs and pats on the back. Sirius was the loudest, of course, laughing as he shouted, โ€œThatโ€™s my best mate! Did you see that dive? Bloody brilliant!โ€

James grinned, allowing himself to soak in the moment. But as the initial adrenaline rush faded, his thoughts drifted back to you.

Through the crowd, he spotted you walking toward the castle with Laurier. You looked happyโ€”laughing at something Finn said, your hand still in his.

Jamesโ€™s chest tightened, the pain creeping back in.

Sirius slung an arm around his shoulders. โ€œOi, donโ€™t let that git ruin your moment. You just won us the Cup, Prongs. Focus on that, yeah?โ€

James forced a nod, plastering a smile on his face. โ€œYeah. Youโ€™re right.โ€

But deep down, as the team carried him back to the common room, the ache lingered. Winning the match had been a distraction, but it wasnโ€™t enough to erase what he felt for youโ€”or the sting of seeing you with someone else.

Still, James promised himself one thing: heโ€™d get through this. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually. And who knew? Maybe, someday, youโ€™d see him the way he saw you.

The Gryffindor common room was a chaotic blur of red and gold, filled with triumphant cheers and laughter. The moment the team returned from the pitch, the party was already in full swing. Someone had charmed a banner to flash "Gryffindor Wins the Cup!" in shimmering letters, and butterbeer bottles floated around the room, courtesy of a cheeky charm from Sirius.

James stood in the center of it all, grinning as his teammates and housemates patted him on the back and congratulated him. For a brief moment, he allowed himself to bask in the glory of the victory, letting it drown out the knot in his chest. Heโ€™d won the game, and Gryffindor had the Cupโ€”he deserved to enjoy it.

โ€œProngs!โ€ Sirius yelled over the noise, shoving a butterbeer into his hand. โ€œYouโ€™re the man of the hour! You better milk this for all itโ€™s worth, because Merlin knows you deserve it.โ€

James laughed, shaking his head. โ€œDonโ€™t let me hear you say that too often, Padfoot. I might start believing it.โ€

Sirius gave him a devilish grin. โ€œOh, you will. Now, cโ€™mon, letโ€™s make some noise!โ€ He climbed onto a table, raising his bottle high. โ€œTo Prongs, our Quidditch hero!โ€

The room erupted in cheers, and James couldnโ€™t help but laugh, taking a sip of his butterbeer as the noise washed over him. For the first time all day, he felt lighter.

As the party went on, James moved through the crowd, chatting and laughing with his housemates. But no matter how loud the celebration got, his eyes kept drifting to the door, half-hoping, half-dreading to see you walk in.

And then, you did.

James froze mid-conversation, his heart doing that familiar stutter-step it always did when he saw you. You looked radiant, wrapped in Gryffindor colors, your cheeks flushed from the cold. But his chest tightened when he noticed Laurier trailing behind you, his hand resting casually on the small of your back.

James quickly turned back to his conversation, forcing a smile and pretending not to notice. He wasnโ€™t going to let Finn Laurierโ€”or his own stupid feelingsโ€”ruin the night.

โ€œOi, Prongs,โ€ Sirius said, appearing at his side again. โ€œStop moping and do something fun. We just won the bloody Cup, mate! At least pretend youโ€™re having the time of your life.โ€

James forced another grin. โ€œI am having fun, Padfoot. Loads of fun.โ€

Sirius narrowed his eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re staring at her again, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ James lied, taking a long sip of butterbeer.

Sirius groaned, grabbing James by the shoulders. โ€œLook, hereโ€™s what youโ€™re going to do. Youโ€™re going to stop torturing yourself, and youโ€™re going to have a bloody fantastic time tonight. And if that doesnโ€™t work, weโ€™ll prank Laurier so hard he wonโ€™t know which way is up. Deal?โ€

James couldnโ€™t help but laugh at that, shaking his head. โ€œAlright, deal.โ€

Hours later, the party was still going strong. Someone had turned the music up, and the common room had transformed into a dance floor. James found himself dragged into the middle of it by Lily Evans, who gave him a pointed look.

โ€œStop sulking, Potter,โ€ she said, smirking. โ€œYou just won the Cup. Act like it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sulking,โ€ James said, though his half-hearted smile gave him away.

Lily raised an eyebrow but didnโ€™t press further. Instead, she tugged him into the rhythm of the music, and for a while, James let himself get lost in the moment.

It wasnโ€™t until he caught sight of you again, laughing at something Laurier said, that the knot in his chest returned. He took a deep breath, plastered on another smile, and decided that, for tonight, heโ€™d keep pretending.

He watched you from across the room as you and Laurier continued talking, laughter bubbling between you two. He could see the way you looked at him nowโ€”so different from the way you looked at him before. It was like there was a barrier, a wall that hadnโ€™t been there when he first met you.

โ€œProngs,โ€ Sirius appeared at his side again, his voice low and concerned. โ€œLook, I know youโ€™ve been through a lot, but this is ridiculous. Youโ€™re letting Laurier ruin your nightโ€”and you just won us the Cup, for Merlinโ€™s sake. Youโ€™re allowed to be happy tonight. So go talk to her. If you donโ€™t, I swear Iโ€™ll do it for you.โ€

James frowned at him, irritated. โ€œIโ€™m not talking to her, Pads. Not now.โ€

โ€œThen at least get out of here and enjoy yourself,โ€ Sirius pressed. โ€œWeโ€™re celebrating, mate. Youโ€™ve earned it.โ€

James looked over at you one more time, and for a second, he almost gave in. But the knot in his chest was still there, tightly wound, and it made everything feel so much harder than it shouldโ€™ve been.

But maybe... maybe he could find a way to feel better. Maybe he could lose himself in the celebration.

โ€œIโ€™ll think about it,โ€ he finally muttered, glancing at his friends.

Sirius didnโ€™t seem convinced but let out an exaggerated sigh. โ€œFine, but Iโ€™m not letting you go off and brood in some corner. The whole bloody schoolโ€™s celebrating with you tonight.โ€

James smirked faintly, feeling a little lighter. Maybe he could pretend to be okay, at least for tonight. He could let the victory, the laughter, and his friends drown out the ache for just a little while longer.

But as the night continued, and as the music played on, James found himself once again looking toward the doorway, hopingโ€”just hopingโ€”that youโ€™d look his way.

For the first time in forever, the world was finally on his side as he saw you quickly leaving Finn and walking straight to him.

โ€œMay I speak to you, please?โ€ James nodded, Dumbfounded.ย

You quickly grabbed his hand and went outside the common room and into the corridors.ย

You took a deep breath, your fingers twisting nervously. โ€œJamesโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve been meaning to talk to you for a while now.โ€

Jamesโ€™s throat went dry, his pulse quickening as he struggled to find his voice. โ€œYeah?โ€

You nodded, glancing down at your hands before meeting his gaze. โ€œIโ€”Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

That wasnโ€™t what he had expected. Of all the scenarios heโ€™d played out in his head, an apology hadnโ€™t been one of them.

โ€œFor what?โ€ he asked, genuine confusion coloring his voice.

โ€œFor everything,โ€ you said in a rush, your words tumbling out before you could stop them. โ€œFor avoiding you. I was confusedโ€”about what I did that made you ignore me. And I guess I wanted to get back at you for ignoring me, so I decided to do the same to you. Andโ€ฆ Iโ€™m sorry for whatever happened between us that made things so weird.โ€

James stared at you, your vulnerability hitting him like a Bludger to the chest. His heart ached at the uncertainty in your voice.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to apologize,โ€ he said quickly, shaking his head.

โ€œYes, I do,โ€ you insisted, your voice firm despite the tears welling in your eyes.

โ€œNo, you donโ€™t,โ€ James countered, his tone soft yet resolute. โ€œItโ€™s not fair to put all of this on yourself. Youโ€™ve always been there for me, and Iโ€”well, Iโ€™ve been a terrible friend lately. I was practically acting like you didnโ€™t exist.โ€

James faltered when he saw the blank expression on your face. Panic flickered in his chestโ€”had he said too much?

But before he could say anything more, you stepped forward and wrapped your arms around him.

โ€œOh, James,โ€ you murmured into his shoulder. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Iโ€”I was acting like you didnโ€™t exist too, but only because you were doing it to me.โ€

He blinked, caught off guard, before slowly relaxing into the hug. He looked down at you, his hand instinctively reaching up to brush away a stray tear trailing down your cheek.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

You shook your head, a small, watery smile breaking through. โ€œWeโ€™re both sorry. Letโ€™s justโ€ฆ not do this anymore, okay?โ€

James nodded, a faint smile tugging at his lips. โ€œDeal.โ€

โ€œIt feels so much better having my best friend around again.โ€ Jamesโ€™ smile faltered again, he never liked the word โ€œbest friendโ€ when it came to you, he always wanted more.

โ€œDefinitelyโ€

You two let each other talk for what felt like hours even though it was barely fifteen minutes. He enjoyed every second though, until you brought up Finn and future plans they may include him. He couldn't believe it, when had your parents met his? He remembers your dad telling him how much he was rooting you and him to be together, now he's okay with you dating some other dude? And worst of all, your father was okay with that same dude wanting to marry his daughter? James felt like throwing up.

โ€œThen he said that my father laid it out on a silver platter.โ€

โ€œLaid... what out on a platter?โ€

โ€œMy future! Gave him the blessing to...to propose. I don't know what to do.โ€

โ€œYou told me you donโ€™t mind being married straight after Hogwarts if you truly loved the man. That being a wife and mother... is your dream. Finn is.. nice, and both of your guysโ€™ parents are supportive. I don't understand. What's holding you back?โ€

โ€œJustโ€ฆ one thing.โ€

โ€œWhat am I supposed to do? Everyone else is just... moving on, and now youโ€™re... and Iโ€™m still... We never even... And heโ€™s there, and youโ€™reโ€”Merlin, youโ€™re never going to find someone whoโ€”โ€ James stopped, his voice cracking. โ€œI know that much, so how... how am I supposed to... I canโ€™t... Iโ€” We...โ€

Before you could speakโ€“a drunk Sirius somehow found you two. โ€œWoah James you're really speaking to her? Atta boy, now, let's get back to the party, cmon, we are going to do something cool, have you heard of ....โ€ Sirius rambled on, tugging on Jamesโ€™ arm to drag him back to the party.

โ€œIโ€™ll be off, then.โ€ You said, voice quivering as if hesitant to leave.

All James could think about was the previous nightโ€”the talk you two had shared. Your words, your voice, the hesitation in your eyesโ€”it all replayed in his mind like a haunting melody. What wouldโ€™ve happened if Sirius hadnโ€™t barged in, if James had told him to leave, if heโ€™d been brave enough to stay in that moment with you?

โ€œI thinkโ€ฆโ€ James began, his voice breaking as he paced the Gryffindor dormitory, โ€œI think she mightโ€™ve been asking if I love her. Andโ€”and I think I told her to marry someone else.โ€

Sirius, slouched in the chair by the window, looked stricken. โ€œMateโ€ฆโ€ he started, his tone heavy with guilt. โ€œIf Iโ€™d knownโ€”if I knew what was happeningโ€”I wouldnโ€™t have gone looking for you. Iโ€”I practically ruined your chances. Merlin, Iโ€™m so, so sorry.โ€

James stopped pacing, running a hand through his already-messy hair. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter. I donโ€™t even know if she meant it. She said so much without really saying anything, and now I donโ€™t know if I imagined it all.โ€

โ€œโ€˜Sure, take option two,โ€™ when option one is all she wants for her future?โ€ James muttered, his voice thick with frustration.

โ€œWhat is option one?โ€ Peter asked, his curiosity breaking the tension.

James scoffed, bitterness creeping into his tone. โ€œItโ€™s Finn, obviously.โ€ He paused, his anger flaring. โ€œBut both their parents support it, and she told me that! Before she spilled all of that on me, we were talking and laughing like nothing was wrong. But nowโ€ฆโ€ He exhaled sharply, his voice softening as he sat down on the edge of his bed. โ€œNow it feels like Iโ€™m being asked to explain the rest of my life on a bloody ticking clock. And if I make the wrong decision, Iโ€™ve either ruined my lifeโ€”or hers.โ€

The room fell silent. Sirius and Peter exchanged uneasy glances, while Remus seemed lost in thought, unsure of how to respond.

Meanwhile, you had confided in your mother about your plans the night before: to finally tell the man you truly loved how you felt. You hadnโ€™t wanted to bring it up while you and James were laughing and enjoying each otherโ€™s company, but you knew if you didnโ€™t seize the moment, youโ€™d never say it at all.

What you hadnโ€™t expected was for him to turn you down. To tell youโ€”calmly, almost dismissivelyโ€”that you should marry Finn.

Your mother was waiting for your response. You knew she expected good news, a letter confirming that you and James were finally together. Instead, you sat at your desk, penning words that left a bitter taste in your mouth.

Dear Mother,

I did what you told me to do, but I fear I shouldnโ€™t have. We were talking just fine, and then I told him everything. I told him how I felt. And he told me to marry Finn.

Finn is lovely, yesโ€”but heโ€™s not James. I asked James if there was any chance for us, and he said no. At least now I have clarity on where I stand with him. And I know it sounds awful to compare Finn to James, but... maybe knowing what I know now, I can learn to be happy with Finn. Father and Finnโ€™s family are all thrilled, after all. I donโ€™t even want to think about what I wouldโ€™ve done if James had said he felt the same.

You sighed, folding the parchment carefully and sealing it in an envelope. The weight of your words sat heavily on your chest, but you couldnโ€™t dwell on them any longer. You needed to send this letter immediately.

Pulling on your cloak, you found yourself heading for one of the secret passages to Hogsmeadeโ€”the ones you and James had used so often. The memories stung, but you pushed them aside. This time, youโ€™d be using the passage alone.

The quickest way to deliver your letter was through the owlery. You knew exactly which owl was the fastest.

As you walked, you let your mind wander to James one last time, allowing yourself the quiet ache of what couldโ€™ve been. You would never speak to him again, not like before. That part of your life was over.

Finn was your future now. And while it hurt to admit, deep down, you knew it was for the best.

A/N: this is a hanahaki au. WC: 4k This is like 80% James w/ a little Remus sprinkled in there but I promise the next part will have more Moony content!

โ€œMoony!โ€

Remus jolts when a pillow hits him right in the face, opening his eyes with a tired groan.

โ€œWhat the fuck?โ€ He complains, sitting up in bed.

โ€œItโ€™s time to get up, mate.โ€ Sirius says, snickering at the unamused glare Remus gives him.

โ€œDid you have to be so aggressive?โ€ Remus sighs, whacking Sirius with the pillow when his back is turned.

โ€œOi! Watch the hair!โ€ Sirius shouts. โ€œIโ€™ve just done it! And you slept right through your alarm! It woke us all up and you were still snoring, so yeah, I did have to be aggressive.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t hear my alarm go off?โ€ Remus mumbles to himself before giving his friends a sheepish smile. โ€œSorry.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine.โ€ Sirius assures. โ€œNone of us had set an alarm anyway. If it werenโ€™t for you, weโ€™d all be fucked.โ€

โ€œWhat were you dreaming about?โ€ Peter asks curiously as he tries to get the wrinkles out of his shirt.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Remus asks.

โ€œFor the first time, possibly ever, you slept through your alarm.โ€ Peter reminds him. โ€œIt mustโ€™ve been a good dream.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ Remus says, mind once again going back to the kiss you shared the night of the Yule Ball. โ€œYeah, it was.โ€

โ€œSo what was it about?โ€ Peter presses.

โ€œAre you guys seriously standing around talking about your dreams right now?โ€ James asks in an annoyed huff as he exits the bathroom. โ€œWe have far more important things to discuss.โ€

โ€œLike?โ€ Peter asks cluelessly, fastening the final button on his shirt.

โ€œY/N! Obviously!โ€ James shouts.

Peter flinches at the loud outburst before getting back to adjusting his tie, sharing an amused smile with Sirius as he does. Across the room, Remus sighs in annoyance. This is all James talked about during dinner last night, and when they got back to their dorm. Remus thought the conversation was over. Clearly he was wrong.

โ€œProngs,โ€ Sirius groans as the boys finally start to make their way to the great hall. โ€œThis again?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ James insists. โ€œYes, this again! Iโ€™m telling you, something is wrong!โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Sirius asks, clearly having had enough of Jamesโ€™ theatrics. โ€œBecause she didnโ€™t immediately fall into your arms? Because she pushed you away when you kissed her?โ€

Remus stumbles on his feet and looks at James with wide eyes.

โ€œKissed her?โ€ He repeats. โ€œYouโ€ฆyou kissed her?โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ James says, giving Remus a funny look. โ€œDidnโ€™t I tell you?โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Remus denies. โ€œWhen I got here, all you guys kept talking about was how cold Y/N was to Prongs. None of you said he kissed her!โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ All three boys say in unison before they start talking over each other.

โ€œWell I did.โ€ James confirms.

โ€œThatโ€™s what happens when you donโ€™t ride the Hogwarts Express with us, Moony.โ€ Sirius chastises. โ€œYou miss things.โ€

โ€œIt completely slipped my mind.โ€ Peter says honestly, giving Remus his typical clueless smile.

โ€œProngs, youโ€™re my best mate; but youโ€™re driving me crazy with this.โ€ Sirius admits.

โ€œI canโ€™t help it!โ€ James groans, running a hand through his hair. โ€œI just donโ€™t understand. I-I love her... How could she be so cruel? It was like she didnโ€™t even recognize meโ€ฆโ€

Remus turns away at the confession while Peter and Sirius share a concerned look.

โ€œMm-mm.โ€ Peter shrugs, frowning in discomfort when Sirius elbows him.

โ€œMaybe she was messing with you?โ€ Sirius offers.

โ€œYou think?โ€ James asks softly.

โ€œShe had to be.โ€ He insists. โ€œYou know, likeโ€ฆpayback for all you put her through-โ€œ

โ€œI didnโ€™t know!โ€ James defends before sighing. โ€œYou really think itโ€™s a prank?โ€

โ€œCome on, Prongs. This is Y/N. Your friend. Your best friend. Sheโ€™d never purposely be cruel to you. Iโ€™ll bet that the next time she sees you, you guys laugh about this whole thing.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ James nods hopefully, smiling at Sirius. โ€œYeah, youโ€™re right!โ€

With that, the marauders finally make their way into the Great Hall. Remus does a quick scan of the room; and when he doesnโ€™t see you, he takes a step back.

โ€œArenโ€™t you coming, Moony?โ€ Peter asks, having noticed his friend no longer beside him.

Remus does a pathetic attempt of digging through his bag before pointing over his shoulder.

โ€œI actually forgot myโ€ฆsomething.โ€ He lies. โ€œYou go ahead. Iโ€™ll catch up.โ€

Peter nods his head before running off to join Sirius and James. Remus immediately turns around and starts heading back to the common room, turning his head this way and that every time he passes a corridor, desperately trying to find you. He has so many questions.

Why did you kiss him on the night of the Yule Ball? Why did you leave him without so much as a goodbye? Why didnโ€™t he hear from you once during holiday? Whatโ€™s going on with you and James?

Upon reaching the portrait hole, Remus considers waiting in the common room before changing his mind and choosing to wait outside, lest you think heโ€™s trying to ambush you. Remus, lost in thought, doesnโ€™t even realize youโ€™ve arrived until you literally appear right in front of him.

โ€œMorning!โ€ You shout with a beaming smile, coming to a stop right in front of him.

Remus, who had previously been digging through his bag, if only to give himself something to do, looks up at the sound of your voice and immediately has the wind knocked out of him. This is the first time heโ€™s seen you in weeks and you look amazing. Gone is the weak, frail girl he spent the previous term taking care of. The girl standing in front of him now is beautiful; with shiny, bouncy hair, full cheeks, and a radiant smile. Thereโ€™s a warmth to you now, a twinkle in your eye, a skip in your step. Youโ€™ve changed- for the better, of course. Itโ€™s like you wereโ€ฆreborn during holiday. Remus doesnโ€™t even realize how long heโ€™d been staring until you anxiously tuck a lock of hair behind your ear.

โ€œAre-are you not happy to see me?โ€ You ask timidly.

โ€œNoโ€ฆI mean yes!โ€ Remus corrects, shaking his head at himself. โ€œOf course Iโ€™m happy to see you! Are you kidding me? Comeโ€™ereโ€

Remus grasps your wrist and pulls you into his chest before wrapping his arms tightly around you. You let out a surprised squeal before hugging him back. Remusโ€™ hold on you gets the tiniest bit tighter, and he presses a kiss to your head before pulling back. He cups your face and smiles fondly at you.

โ€œHow have you been? Are you doing okay?โ€ He asks softly, eyes roaming over your features, as if itโ€™s the first time heโ€™s seen you. Perhaps it is.

You nod, bringing a hand up and placing it over his.

โ€œYou sure?โ€ He presses, causing you to squeeze his hand affectionately and giggle.

โ€œMoony, Iโ€™m fine.โ€ You assure, smiling up at him. โ€œMissed you.โ€

Remus huffs at that, though he canโ€™t lie that his heart flipped at the confession.

โ€œI missed you too, love.โ€ He replies, โ€œMore than you know.โ€ He adds softly. He doesnโ€™t mean to, but it slips out. His eyes widen the tiniest bit, registering what heโ€™s just said; but he changes the topic before youโ€™re able to comment on the slip up. โ€œCome on. Breakfast is waiting.โ€

You nod excitedly, turning around and falling into step beside Remus. He wants to ask you about the kiss. He wants to ask you about James, but now isnโ€™t the right time; so he simply lets it be, content to be by your side once more. For the first time in weeks, he feels whole.

Reaching the great hall, Remus looks over at you and smiles softly. Youโ€™ve been going on and on about some action movie you went to see during the break. Apparently you loved it so much you went to the cinema a total of six times, dragging your poor parents along for most of them.

โ€œOh my god! And then he does this super cool move, where he does a sharp U-turn? But when he does the turn- for fucks sake.โ€ You cut yourself off.

โ€œWhat? Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Remus asks.

โ€œWhy is he here?โ€ You ask with a frown, nodding your head at the table. Remus follows your gaze and looks back to you with a confused frown.

โ€œWho? James?โ€ He clarifies.

โ€œDonโ€™t tell me youโ€™re friends with that creep.โ€ You whisper as you both look at the table. Sirius and Peter wave at you, and you smile and wave in return. However, when James looks at you, you look away, frowning at Remus.

โ€œIt was a misunderstanding.โ€ Remus tries to reason, even though he himself doesnโ€™t know the full story.

โ€œMisunderstanding or not, I donโ€™t want to sit next to him.โ€

โ€œWhat about Padfoot and Wormtail? Donโ€™t you wanna sit with them?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ You groan. โ€œI guess I can be in his general vicinity for a few minutes. But sit next to me!โ€

Remus nods his head and you let out a grateful squeal, grabbing onto him as he leads you to the table. Remus looks at your hand placed on his arm, before looking at you with a bashful smile.

โ€œThere she is!โ€ Sirius exclaims when you finally join your friends.

โ€œHello gentlemen.โ€ You greet, sitting down with a smile.

โ€œHi Y/N.โ€ James says softly, shifting nervously in his seat.

You look at James and nod your head with a forced smile before immediately looking away, finding your plate of food much more interesting than it actually is. James looks at Sirius with a frown and he shakes his head, silently telling James to let it go for now. Which he does! For a while. Heโ€™s able to make it fifteen whole minutes before he starts, effectively interrupting the conversation you and Peter were having.

โ€œSo where were you during holiday?โ€ James asks, causing you to look up from your pancakes.

โ€œMm?โ€ You hum while you finish the bite you just took.

โ€œHoliday.โ€ James repeats. โ€œWhere were you? I wrote to you every dayโ€ฆI thought youโ€™d write back at least once but I never heard from youโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhy would I write back?โ€ You ask with a confused laugh.

With that simple question the table goes quiet. All four boys share a concerned look before turning to you.

โ€œY/N.โ€ Sirius laughs, because surely you must be joking. โ€œThatโ€™s James.โ€

โ€œRightโ€ฆ Well Iโ€™m gonna start heading to Charms. You coming?โ€ You ask, standing from your seat and grabbing your backpack. James starts to gather his things before you stop him in his tracks with a single word.

โ€œMoony?โ€

Remus chokes on his tea before quickly setting his cup down and looking at you.

โ€œAre you coming or not?โ€ You ask, staring down at him with a smile.

Remus shares a confused look with the boys before nodding his head at you.

โ€œYeah.โ€ He agrees, grabbing his bag as well. โ€œYeah, letโ€™s go.โ€

He shares one last confused look with Sirius, Peter, and James before following after you.

โ€œStill think sheโ€™s just messing with me?โ€ James asks Sirius, watching with sad eyes as you and Remus exit the great hall and turn left, disappearing from his line of sight.

โ€œNah.โ€ Sirius shakes his head as they all start to gather their belongings. โ€œYouโ€™re right, mate. Thereโ€™s something going on.โ€

โ€œYeah, but what?โ€ Peter asks, taking a large, final sip of his juice.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ James shrugs helplessly as they start to make their way out of the great hall. โ€œBut Iโ€™m gonna find out.โ€

๏ธตโ€ฟ๏ธตโ€ฟเญจโ™กเญงโ€ฟ๏ธตโ€ฟ๏ธต

You walk into charms and follow Remus to his seat. He sits down and starts rummaging through his bag while you squat, resting your head on his desk as he gets all his supplies out.

โ€œHey,โ€ you whisper at him. โ€œWhatโ€™s your last class today?โ€

โ€œAncient runes. Why?โ€

You bite your lower lip before smiling mischievously at him and Remus is once again taken back to that night- that kiss.

โ€œDo you wanna skip and go to Hogsmeade?โ€ You ask.

โ€œSure.โ€ Remus nods. The first day would most likely just be a review of what they went over before break, so itโ€™s not like heโ€™d be missing anything important. โ€œIโ€™ll tell the boys to meet us at the usual spot.โ€

โ€œActually, I was hoping it could be just us?โ€ You clarify.

โ€œOh?โ€ Remus says, brows furrowed.

โ€œJust this once?โ€ You plead with a pout before smiling at him. โ€œI missed my Moony.โ€

Remus feels his heart stutter in his chest when you refer to him as yours. He canโ€™t fight the goofy smile on his face as he nods.

โ€œOkay. Sure.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ You ask with hopeful eyes.

โ€œYeah.โ€ He confirms.

โ€œOkay, cool.โ€ You smile at him. โ€œItโ€™s a date.โ€

Remusโ€™ eyes widen at the word. You smile at Peter as he takes his seat next to Remus. You stand up, prepared to take your own seat only to groan when you see James sitting in the row in front of you.

โ€œOh, you gotta be kidding. Wormtail, switch seats with me.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Peter refuses, sinking further into his seat.

โ€œCome on.โ€ You plead.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Peter asks skeptically.

โ€œLook whoโ€™s sitting in front of me!โ€ You whine, jerking your head to the side. โ€œI donโ€™t wanna sit with him. Heโ€™s weird.โ€

โ€œGood morning, class!โ€ Professor Flitwick greets as he enters the room. โ€œI trust you all had a good holiday. If you could all settle down so I can start taking attendance.โ€

โ€œY/N, please.โ€ Remus begs. โ€œJust for today. Weโ€™ll talk about this later.โ€

โ€œUgh, fine.โ€ You concede with a roll of your eyes. โ€œBut if he tries to kiss me again, Iโ€™m drawing my wand.โ€

Remus nods his head.

โ€œAnd getting a restraining order.โ€ You add, causing Peter to snicker.

โ€œFair enough.โ€ Remus agrees with a chuckle.

You begrudgingly walk to your desk, dropping your backpack on the table before falling into your seat. You start pulling your supplies out, only to groan when your parchment rolls off your desk. James, having heard it hit the ground, picks it up and hands it back to you.

โ€œThanks, Jeremy.โ€ You nod at him.

โ€œItโ€™s James.โ€ He corrects with a frown.

โ€œWhatever.โ€ You shrug.

Sighing, James turns around and faces the front once more. He doesnโ€™t try to talk to you again, no matter how badly he wants to. Itโ€™s near the end of the lesson when James, and just about everyone else, gets the shock of a lifetime.

Professor Flitwick, having wrapped up the lesson a bit earlier than expected, decided to let everyone talk amongst themselves until class was over. Youโ€™re doodling on the margins of your notes when someone comes to a stop beside your desk. You look up and smile when you see Lori, a girl you had tutored the previous year, standing in front of you.

โ€œY/N!โ€ She greets excitedly. โ€œLook at you! Youโ€™re glowing!โ€

โ€œI am?โ€ You ask with a confused smile. Sure you feel different, but you didnโ€™t think you looked any different.

โ€œYes!โ€ She confirms with an enthusiastic nod of her head. โ€œYou look so happy and healthy and- and full of life!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because I am!โ€ You tell her with a smile of your own. โ€œIโ€™m all better now.โ€

Youโ€™re so absorbed with the person standing in front of you that you donโ€™t even realize nearly everyone in the room has stopped talking, desperately trying to eavesdrop on your conversation.

โ€œReally?โ€ Lori gasps, eyes widening. โ€œDoes that mean the guyโ€ฆhe loves you back?โ€

โ€œOh, I donโ€™t know.โ€ You reply with a careless shrug of your shoulders. โ€œBut even if he did, itโ€™s too late.โ€

That sentence causes the marauders to share a concerned look.

โ€œI got the surgery done during holiday!โ€ You exclaim, biting your lip in an attempt to hide your smile.

Jamesโ€™ heart drops at the announcement.

โ€œYou did?โ€ Someone sitting behind you asks.

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ You nod, turning around in your seat to face them. โ€œIโ€™ve got a big olโ€™ scar going down my chest to prove it. Itโ€™s very hot.โ€ You joke, causing a few classmates to laugh.

Sitting in front of you, James finds it difficult to breathe.

โ€œWere you scared?โ€ Lori asks softly.

โ€œWell sure,โ€ you nod, giving her a kind smile. โ€œBut I didnโ€™t wanna die. I meanโ€ฆyou saw meโ€ฆ I was getting worse and worse. At the end of the day, he just wasnโ€™t worth it.โ€

โ€œProngsโ€ฆare you alright?โ€ Sirius asks softly, whispering so as to not draw attention to his friend.

โ€œFine.โ€ James nods, smiling tensely at his friend, desperately trying to keep it together.

โ€œAre you su-โ€œ

James stands abruptly from his seat, grabbing his backpack before rushing out of the room. Sirius stands, prepared to go after him, only to stop when Remus shakes his head.

โ€œGive him some space.โ€ He mouths from his seat a few rows away.

Sighing, Sirius nods, sitting back down and rubbing his temples.

โ€œI thought seventh year was supposed to be easy.โ€ He grumbles to himself. โ€œThis whole situationโ€™s fucked.โ€

๏ธตโ€ฟ๏ธตโ€ฟเญจโ™กเญงโ€ฟ๏ธตโ€ฟ๏ธต

After Defense Against the Dark Arts, the marauders all convened in their dormitory for an emergency meeting. Well, the marauders minus Remus, convened in their dormitory. But to be fair, they didnโ€™t have time to track him down in a time like this! They trusted him to find his way eventually. And sure enough, he comes rushing in only a few minutes after them.

โ€œWhatโ€™s all this?โ€ He asks, breathlessly, clearly not expecting to run into anyone. โ€œWhat are you all doing here?โ€

โ€œWaiting for you!โ€ Peter exclaims. โ€œSit down, we were just about to get started.โ€

โ€œWith?โ€ Remus presses, still completely lost as to what heโ€™s just walked into.

โ€œWith our meeting!โ€ James stresses. โ€œTo talk about Y/N. Figure out whatโ€™s going on and you knowโ€ฆset up a game plan of some sort.โ€

โ€œNow?โ€ Remus asks, glancing at his watch before heading to his trunk, trying to find something acceptable to wear. โ€œI canโ€™t. Iโ€™m sorry. I have plans.โ€

โ€œYou have plans?โ€ James repeats incredulously.

โ€œCancel them.โ€ Sirius says simply.

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ Remus repeats.

โ€œWhy not?โ€ He fires back.

โ€œBecause theyโ€™re with Y/N!โ€ Remus admits, releasing a shaky breath before turning to face his friends.

โ€œYou have plansโ€ฆwith Y/N?โ€ James asks softly.

โ€œWhat plans?โ€ Sirius interrogates, crossing his arms as he stares at Remus.

โ€œShe wants me to go to Hogsmeade with herโ€ฆโ€

โ€œJust you?โ€ Sirius asks, to which Remus nods.

โ€œJust me.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Peter finally asks.

โ€œI-I donโ€™t know.โ€ Remus shrugs.

โ€œThis is great.โ€ James says, getting everyoneโ€™s attention.

โ€œIt is?โ€ Remus and Sirius ask at the same time.

โ€œYes!โ€ James assures them. โ€œBrilliant actually. Think about it, guys! Who was by her side the whole time she was sick?โ€

โ€œMoony?โ€ Peter guesses.

โ€œRight.โ€ James nods, โ€œSo who do you think she trusts the most right now? Who would she spill everything to? Who would she let pick her brain?โ€

โ€œMoony!โ€ Peter repeats, more confidently this time.

โ€œMoony, you could be our man on the inside.โ€ James tells him eagerly. โ€œGo to Hogsmeade. Find out what happened. What really happened. Then come back and fill us in.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think this is such a good ideaโ€ฆโ€ Remus trails off unsurely, toying with the jumper in his hands.

โ€œDonโ€™t think, just go!โ€ James insists, pushing Remus out the door before throwing himself onto his bed.

He groans in discomfort when he feels something jabbing him in the neck. James pulls it out and sits up when he sees itโ€™s a letter from his mum. He rips it open, wondering whatโ€™s so important that it had to be delivered straight to his dorm instead of the owlery.

โ€œHello love.โ€ James reads out loud. โ€œI found this tucked into the back gate while tending to the garden. I think it might be that letter you were waiting on this whole time. Iโ€™m sure by now youโ€™ve probably already discussed whatever was written inside, but I figured Iโ€™d send it to you anyway! Love, mum.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ Peter asks curiously, sitting down on his bed as well.

โ€œItโ€™s a letter from Y/Nโ€ฆโ€ James says, taking in the weathered envelope. He rips it open and pulls out the parchment inside, unfolding it gently before holding it up.

โ€œWell?โ€ Peter presses. โ€œWhatโ€™s it say?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ James sighs, shaking his head as he puts the letter down. โ€œI canโ€™t read it. Iโ€™m scared.โ€

Sighing, Sirius stands and holds his arm out. James gives him a grateful smile before handing him the letter. Sirius clears his throat before reading.

James,

In case you havenโ€™t figured it out yet, itโ€™s you. Itโ€™s you Iโ€™m in love with. Iโ€™m sure that right about now youโ€™re hating yourself for not realizing sooner, and blaming yourself for everything I went throughโ€ฆ Donโ€™t. It wasnโ€™t your fault. I donโ€™t blame you for any of it. And you shouldnโ€™t either.

I knew what I was getting myself into when I fell in love with you, and I donโ€™t regret it. I donโ€™t regret any of it. It was worth it. You were worth it. And I would have happily died loving youโ€ฆif only I loved you a little more.

The thing is, the thought of dying terrifies me, Jamie. The thought of leaving you behind, of never seeing you, or Peter or Sirius or Remus, it keeps me up at night. You guys are my best friends, the most important people in my life. I canโ€™t leave you. Which is why Iโ€™ve decided to get the surgery.

โ€œFuck.โ€ James sighs. โ€œY/N, why didnโ€™t you wait for me?โ€

Sirius gives him a sympathetic smile before continuing to read the letter.

Iโ€™m afraid youโ€™ll get the short end of the stick. Iโ€™ll come back in January and I wonโ€™t love you anymore. Hell, I wonโ€™t even remember you. But Iโ€™ll be alive. Thatโ€™s enough for me. I hope itโ€™s enough for you.

Iโ€™ll apologize now for whatever the new Y/N does. I imagine she wonโ€™t particularly be nice to you. She'll probably tell you off and roll her eyes whenever you look in her direction. Sheโ€™ll make her disdain for you apparent. She might even raise her wand against you. Donโ€™t take it personally. Thatโ€™s only because she doesnโ€™t remember you. She doesnโ€™t remember loving you, or being loved by you. Go easy on her, yeah?

From where Iโ€™m standing you have two options. If you donโ€™t love me back, then you have nothing to worry about. You can carry on loving Lily and you wonโ€™t have to think twice about me. I donโ€™t remember you, remember? Donโ€™t feel bad and please, in the name of Godric, donโ€™t feel guilty. All Iโ€™ve ever wanted was for you to be happy; even if that wasnโ€™t with me.

If, however, by some stroke of luck you do happen to return my feelings, I am so sorry. Iโ€™m sorry because what Iโ€™m about to ask you to do is going to be incredibly difficultโ€ฆ Jamie, you need to let me go.

โ€œNo.โ€ James says immediately, angrily shaking his head. โ€œFuck that. I wonโ€™t do it.โ€

Sirius huffs in amusement. James and Peter look at him questioningly before he points to where he left off in the letter and continues.

Iโ€™ve known you my whole life, James. I know what youโ€™re thinking. Youโ€™re probably reading this letter, shaking your head defiantly, saying you wonโ€™t do it. So that leaves you with one last optionโ€ฆ

Somehow, you have to get me to fall in love with you again. And youโ€™ll have to be quick about it; because if you do love me, when I come back in January youโ€™ll be the one with unrequited love. And wherever unrequited love is, hanahaki is not far behind.

I donโ€™t know how, but Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll be able to pull it off. After all, you already managed to make me fall in love with you once before- and you werenโ€™t even trying that time! This time around should be easier, right?

I know it doesnโ€™t feel like it right now, but Iโ€™m still here. Donโ€™t give up on me, Jamie. Iโ€™m still hereโ€ฆsomewhere.

Sirius carefully folds the letter back up and hands it to James.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ.โ€ Peter trails off.

โ€œWhat are you gonna do?โ€ Sirius asks, leaning against the wall.

โ€œIsnโ€™t it obvious? Iโ€™m gonna get her back.โ€ James says with a determined nod.

Threads ; Part One

The Great Hall is thrumming with activity as the anticipation of the new school year sets in.ย

Sunlight pours through the windows, casting a warm, golden hue onto the tables and cold walls. The clinking of cutlery melds with the lively chatter and bursts of laughter that permeate the hall. Students eagerly catch up with their friends after the summer break, their faces illuminated with excitement and anticipation for the year ahead.

"I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m quite ready for this year." You admit softly. Lily, seated to your left, casts a surprised glance in your direction. Your tone carries a hint of nervousness, a stark difference from your usual excitement for the new school year.

As seventh year begins, the reality of it all felt surreal, almost as if time had slipped through your fingers without warning. Contemplating life beyond Hogwarts seemed daunting, a foggy landscape you weren't quite prepared to navigate. The thought of a future without the familiar halls and comforting routines left you feeling unsettled. Questions about your path post-Hogwarts lingered causing anxiety to tighten in your stomach. The uncertainty of what lay ahead, and where your friendships would stand in the grand scheme of things, clouded your mind.

"Because this is the year you find your soulmate?" Marlene's question hung in the air, causing your stomach to sink even further.

Soulmates were tethered by a thread, an intangible connection that tightens with proximity, drawing them closer by an irresistible pull. As their 18th birthday approached, the magnetic pull between soulmates intensified, drawing them closer together in an undeniable bond.ย

Even in their younger years, soulmates could sense the faint tug of their connection, though it often was difficult to discern between fleeting infatuation and the unbreakable bond between soulmates. However, as the milestone birthday drew nearer, the pull became unmistakable, a magnetic force guiding them to their soulmate.ย

At least, that's what you've heard from those who have experienced it firsthand.

โ€œI donโ€™t know if Iโ€™m ready for that.โ€ You confirm, and Lily sends you an understanding look. Neither of you had found your soulmates, while Marlene had found her soulmate in Dorcas.

The timing of finding one's soulmate varied greatly from person to person. Some discovered theirs early on in life, while others didn't find theirs until mere days before their 18th birthday. It all depended on the person and how open they were to the connection.

"We'll be going through it together." Lily says, her smile soft as she bumped her shoulder against yours. It did offer some comfort. Lily Evans had been your best friend since first year, and the thought of her being by your side made the upcoming year feel a bit more bearable.

"What if James is your soulmate?" You ask, your tone laced with playful teasing. However, Lily's hopeful expression catches you off guard, prompting you to shift your gaze towards Marlene in shock. Across the table, Marlene and Dorcas appear just as taken aback by Lily's unexpected reaction. It's a stark contrast from the adamant denials she would have offered last year.

"Maybe he is." Lily says quietly, her tone nonchalant as she offers a simple shrug, as if what she just said isn't a big deal.

โ€œAre you..When did this happen?โ€ Dorcas asks, and you and Marlene eye Lily curiously.

Since the moment you met him, Lily had been skillfully evading James's advances, urging him to seek out his true soulmate rather than pursuing her. Despite Lily's dismissals, James remained steadfast in his belief that she was the one destined for him. Deep down, you sensed a potential soulmate connection between them, but you never brought up the subject with Lily, knowing she would vehemently deny the idea.

Lily looks up with feigned innocence, โ€œWhat?โ€

Marlene sighs, โ€œLily Evans, donโ€™t you dare play dumb. When did your feelings towards James change?โ€ย

"I donโ€™t know. Over the summer, I guess, I realized Iโ€™ve been a bit unfair to him," She sighs. "Heโ€™s been nothing but kind, and Iโ€™ve just blown him off. And honestly, he was on my mind most of the summer."

"Merlin, we've barely been here for two hours, and the soulmate bonds are already starting." Marlene grins, amused.

"I didn't say I thought he was mine!" Lily cries out.

"You said maybe. That heavily implies that you do." You chuckle at the panicked look on Lilyโ€™s face, fully aware that she's going to be teased about this relentlessly.

"Have you felt a pull with him?" Dorcas asks, and Lily's cheeks flush with a delicate shade of pink.

โ€œI mean, yes. But couldnโ€™t that just be the annoyance I feel towards him half the time?โ€ Lily asks.

"With that logic, you and Sirius are soulmates." Marlene interjects, her grin mischievous as she takes a sip of her tea, her gaze fixed on you over the brim of her mug. Your expression sours at the mere mention of his name, a subtle shift in mood palpable in the air.

โ€œThere is no way that Sirius Black is my soulmate.โ€ You snark, the mere thought of Sirius causing your stomach to knot with intense emotion. Hatred, you conclude.

It's the mere mention of Sirius Black that tends to stir up the worst in you. His name alone triggers a cascade of emotions within you, igniting a visceral reaction that you struggle to contain. Just the thought of him is enough to set your nerves on edge, reminding you of past conflicts and tensions that still linger beneath the surface.

It's not as though you hadn't attempted to be friendly with Sirius. Shortly after your arrival at Hogwarts, James Potter had introduced himself to you and Lily in the Gryffindor common room. He was accompanied by Remus, and while James eagerly engaged Lily in conversation, you found yourself drawn to Remus, the two of you hitting it off. You chatted for what felt like hours, so engrossed in your conversation that you barely noticed Sirius and Peter entering the common room.

However, the moment your eyes landed on Sirius, it felt as though the air had been knocked out of your lungs. For a brief second you had wondered if he was your soulmate. Everything blurred into a hazy backdrop, your eyes unable to part from his figure.

Remus didnโ€™t miss the way you seemed to drift away from the conversation, your gaze fixed on Sirius as he made his way over to where you all were seated. You and Remus occupied the couch, while Lily and James were comfortable in their own armchairs. Sirius and Peter hovered nearby, a curious expression etched across their features, clearly unsure who the two unfamiliar girls engaged in conversation with their friends were.

Remus had introduced you while James and Lily remained preoccupied, not yet noticing the two boys, "Mates, this is Y/n," Remus had said, his warm smile welcoming.

Peter had been friendly and eager, extending his hand with enthusiasm as he shared a bit about himself. But Sirius remained silent, his expression etched with a subtle frown. When you attempted to engage him in conversation, he responded with curt one-word answers, leaving you feeling increasingly self-conscious, questioning what you might have done wrong.

Remus had assured you that Sirius wasn't usually like that, and he promised that the next time you saw him, he would likely be more talkative and outgoing. You clung to hope, eagerly anticipating a change in Sirius' demeanor, only to be met with disappointment when his behavior remained unchanged. In the company of others, he exuded friendliness, cracking jokes and radiating outgoing energy.ย

Yet, when his attention turned to you, he completely shifted, hardly communicating and barely sparing you a glance.

You couldn't figure out what you might have done wrong. From the moment you met Sirius, you had been nothing but friendly, offering a warm smile and introducing yourself with genuine enthusiasm. Lily, who shared many similarities with you, greeted Sirius in much the same manner, yet he responded to her without hesitation. It left you wondering: what had been so different about your interaction with him?

Over time, frustration crept in, and you found yourself growing increasingly sarcastic or curt in your interactions with him. Before long, your relationship devolved into incessant bickering and exchanging snide comments.

Any inkling that Sirius might be your soulmate was swiftly forgotten.

"Oi! Princess! You talking about me over there?" Sirius' voice cuts through the chatter, drawing your attention to the Marauders down the table. His cocky smirk meets your gaze, and for a fleeting moment, you wonder if he overheard your conversation. But he's too far away to have eavesdropped, yet close enough to call out to you, and his voice effortlessly grabs the attention of quite a few other students at the Gryffindor table.ย

The students in your year hardly flinch, accustomed to the heated banter that often erupted between you and Sirius. Observing the familiar fighting between you and Sirius was almost expected; it wouldn't have felt like the first day of school without it for some of the students.

โ€œNot everything revolves around you, Black.โ€ You retort, rolling your eyes at his arrogance. Anger begins to simmer within you, heat radiating through your body as frustration builds.

You assume he must have just noticed you, considering you've been had a peaceful morning so far. But little did you know, Sirius had fixed his gaze on you the moment he entered the hall, and he's been eager to get under your skin. Anything to capture your attention.

Sirius, undeterred, flashes a grin that seems to stretch from ear to ear. โ€œSo mean already. Didnโ€™t you miss me? The months without you were unbearable.โ€ He calls, his tone dripping with amusement, clearly deriving great enjoyment from riling you up.

โ€œDo you really think I spend my free time thinking about you?โ€ You're sending him an irritated frown, but your eyes are lit up with a fire that's reserved only for him. It's the same look you get every time the two of you fight, and he loves it.

"I think you do, princess. I think I drive you crazy.โ€ He declares with that smug grin plastered on his face, igniting a burning sensation in your stomach.

You remain silent, too consumed by anger to muster a response. His words strike a chord because, deep down, you know he's right. He has a way of driving you to the brink of frustration. You have wracked your brain, relentlessly trying to decipher why he harbors such animosity towards you and where you might have gone wrong with him.

You're momentarily caught off guard, your mind racing to come up with a response that doesn't betray your irritation, much less let Sirius think he's gotten to you. Fortunately, Remus swiftly engages him in conversation, likely sensing the tension brewing on your face.

"I'm telling you, there's a connection there." Marlene insists, and you shoot her a glare, prompting a laugh to escape her lips.

The initial night back at Hogwarts always proved the most challenging for you. It took a few nights before you could finally settle into the unfamiliar bed and drift off to sleep without difficulty. The weight of it being your final year lingered heavily in your mind, along with the daunting task of uncovering your soulmate.

Seated before the crackling fire, you enveloped yourself in the warmth of your blanket, captivated by the dancing of the flames. Your silent wish lingered in the air - that, perhaps, if you remained in this cozy atmosphere long enough, fatigue would gradually claim you.

"Up late thinking of me, princess?" Sirius's voice breaks the silence, causing your body to tense reflexively. You shoot him a glare over your shoulder as he settles into the floor beside you, his gaze fixed on the flickering flames instead of meeting yours.

"What are you doing?" You quip, your tone laced with irritation. Sirius glances in your direction, leaning back on his palms with a subtle smirk playing on his lips. Amusement dances in his eyes as he takes in your furrowed brows and the unmistakable look of irritation etched across your features.

โ€œWarming up. Itโ€™s rather cold in the dorm,โ€ He says, before glancing down at the blanket thatโ€™s wrapped around your figure. โ€œCare to share? โ€

โ€œGet fucked,โ€ You huff, pulling the blanket tighter around your figure, your gaze fixed on the fireplace as you ignore Sirius's laughter, โ€œWhy are you sitting here? Go somewhere else.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s the fun in that?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not in the mood to deal with you.โ€ You snark, your hopes of relaxing by the fire dashed by the unexpected disruption.

โ€œAnd when are you?โ€ Sirius's tone carries a teasing edge, and a mischievous grin tugs at his lips as he observes your bristling reaction.ย

He longs for you to turn and meet his gaze, to shoot him the scathing glare he's so accustomed to receiving.

You turn sharply, your eyes narrowing into thin slits as you fix them on Sirius, a silent warning brewing in your gaze. There she is, he thinks.

โ€œGo somewhere else.โ€ You repeat, staring Sirius down.

โ€œNo.โ€ He declares, shifting his position to squarely face you, leaving no doubt that he has no intention of backing down or leaving anytime soon.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your problem?โ€ You grit out your words, and Sirius narrows his eyes at you as though you've struck a nerve. His reaction is swift, catching you off guard. While you and Sirius have always engaged in banter, he had never looked at you with such palpable hatred before.

โ€œYou.โ€ He snaps, his voice dripping with disdain, devoid of its usual teasing lilt that never fails to irk you. Instead, his expression morphs into one of genuine animosity, a stark departure from the usual banter that fuels your frustration.

โ€œWhy? What have I ever done to you?โ€ You're worked up now, your heart thumping with frustration as you pivot to fully face him. In your angered state, you miscalculate the proximity between you, and you're startled to find yourselves mere inches apart. Neither of you budges, both refusing to back away, as doing so would feel like conceding defeat.

Neither of you speaks, the air heavy with tension as you stare at each other through narrowed eyes, chests heaving with unresolved emotions. And in a heart-stopping moment, you feel itโ€”the undeniable tug, the unspoken connection between you.

Your mouth parts in surprise, caught off guard by the intensity of the moment. Before you can truly react, Sirius rises abruptly and strides back to his room, leaving you sitting in stunned silence by the fireplace.
