Hey I was wondering if you had any advice/resources on beginning/using osteomancy?
sure!resources:
- this site gives a pretty good overview of bone throwing and even gives some ideas on bone types
- this site is also good for info on how to interact with your bone set
- this video is also a good source of information
- this book was my go to when starting out in bone throwing. it has a lot of information and ideas and can really give you a good idea of where to start
tips:
- this type of divination is very personal and super intuitive. there’s no right or wrong way to read the bones. you assign each bone their meaning and so the interpretations are always solely on you.
-anything can be used in osteomancy, but it’ll still generally be called a “bone.” for example, i used a bullet shell, and a bottle cap and various other oddities. i still call them bones
-this may not be up your alley, but i’ve found that talking to my bones and “feeding” them has only made my intuition with them stronger. don’t worry about looking silly, it’s fairly traditional to do.
that’s really all i can think of. you can find more articles and such by googling “bone throwing” instead of osteomancy. if you have any more questions about it, feel free to ask me. good luck!!
So these are my correspondences from my grimoire for times of day, plus my reasoning, which may or may not coincide with other associations. I focus on my personal associations, but also the practicalities of doing certain spells depending on how light it is (based on autumn in my region of the UK). Since my focus is on how light it is, I’m not distinguishing “morning” from “afternoon” and such.
Night:
The sun is asleep and it’s totally dark. This is a good time for preparation: preparing for the next day, an upcoming spell or ritual, an upcoming event. It’s also a good time to do anything involving secrecy, especially once everyone’s asleep and the house is quiet.
Spells for: understanding, cleansing, magical powers.
Dawn:
The sun is starting to rise. Light is returning and the day is beginning, but it’s not totally light yet. This is a good time to work with beginnings and goals for the day ahead. Since the day is beginning to get brighter and brighter, this is also a good time to start spells that you intent to grow throughout the day.
Spells for: motivation, confidence, luck.
Day:
The sun is high in the sky. This is a good time to focus on your daily responsibilities, and everything associated with them - relationships, habits, and skills.
Spells for: fertility, relationships or communication, improving skills and knowledge.
Sunset:
The sun is setting, and the day’s almost over. There’s still some light left, so this is your chance to finish off anything needing done each day as well as reap the rewards of your efforts. As daylight hours are decreasing, this is also a time to do work with banishing or breaking.
Spells for: dedication, success, prosperity, banishing or breaking.
Spells throughout the day:
You could include aspects of each time of day into a day-long spell. Taking a luck spell as an example:
Night: cleanse anything you intend to use and incorporate understanding to help you understand the effects of the spell on yourself and others.
Dawn: begin “growing” the spell, and incorporate luck. Make sure your goal (intent) for the spell is clear.
Day: incorporate aspects of your daily routine that you need the luck for. (Charge the spell after class if you need luck for an upcoming test, for example.)
Sunset: incorporate success to help the spell work well, incorporate banishing to banish unintended effects and complete the spell.
The spell is now complete, and can be cast at any time. Of course, you could include any combination of these times (though I’d only include times that follow one another - so I wouldn’t just skip dawn and do night and day, for example).
Spells throughout the seasons:
Since this can be season dependant, it can be adapted if that suits you better. It might be better to start a luck spell at night and charge it while you sleep if dawn is at 3am, for example, or you could just do it during the day.

Bone Divination (Osteomancy) is an ancient practice of fortune telling used throughout many cultures. It’s important to find personal pieces that you deeply connect with.
List of objects commonly used in Bone Divination sets: - Old Coins - Crystals and Stones - Dice - Seashells - Animal Claws - Small animal Jaw bone - Animal feet - Nuts - Seed Pods - Skeleton Keys - Beads made of glass, wood, animal horn or bone - Metal Charms - Personal Jewelry such as rings or pendants - Any items that hold a personal meaning for you
Taking care of your divination set: - Regularly cleanse your pieces with White Sage - Keep them with you during the day to form a deep bond with the pieces - If unable to keep them near during the day, keep close to you at night - I find that most pieces like to rest on natural surfaces- wood, moss, etc - Charge them under the Full Moon when possible, especially crystals or stones - Meditate with the pieces and listen to what they have to say - Occasionally bury the bones lightly in an indoor flowerpot for a short time (or outside in the garden if not raining). Bones tend to like being in the ground. It allows them to rest.

Trick or treat!
Treat!
(A poppet spell for breaking negative energy)
Create a poppet with a taglock for your friend or family member who is dealing with bad energy or vibes. Lovingly bathe it in a cleansing bath of charged water with rosemary, lemon, salt- maybe some rose petals to help soothe them.
Since you’re using a poppet feel free to use rainwater or moon water, rose petals from any grocery store or boutique, and even essential oils rubbed into the poppet’s fabric/skin.
Afterwards, draw tiny protection sigils or bindrunes on thin strips of paper and fashion them into wrist braces and a necklace to twist around the poppets arms and neck
Keep in a safe place until at least your friend/family feels better- or as long as you like.
Repeat the cleansing bath if needed as necessary.

Of course, only put in your book of shadows/grimoire what you want. If you don't want to put certain subjects in your book then that's fine. It's your book, utilize it how you want. This is just a masterlist of ideas that I've put together. Feel free to add anything else to the list that I may have missed, because there's absolutely no way I included everything.
And for the love of all the gods, if you come across a closed entity or practice, don't try to work with the entity or practice if you're not already part of that group or tradition. You can research it but don't practice it.

This spell is designed to let a specific spirit know that you are open to communication. It includes protective elements to avoid attracting negative entities.
*It is important to research the side effects of herbs before coming into contact with them. One should also keep in mind their personal allergies and medications taken when ingesting herbs. Your safety is more important than an ingredient.*
Ingredients
Dried Rose Hip (2 or more)
Clove incense
Dandelion (one stem and flower)
Mint leaf or scent, in any natural form
An item that relates to the spirit you wish to contact
A Brown or White candle
Directions
Light your Clove incense and your candle.
Sit with your item in your hand. Rub it clockwise.
Picture the spirit as you know it in your mind. Verbalize your openness to receiving communications (if you are unable to verbalize this or do not feel comfortable you can think it instead).
Take your rose hip and dandelion. Wrap them together (with string or cloth). Bury them under your doorstep (if you do not have a traditional doorstep you can put it on your porch, hang it in your doorway, or bury it by an entrance).
Leave a window or door open (it could be slightly open or fully open) for one hour.
Be sure to pay attention to little signs and happenings after performing this ritual and be sure to try and remember your dreams!
This spell is dedicated to my Grandmother, Marie, who I never had the chance to meet during her short time on earth. I hope to see you someday.
I think the first step towards the life you want is often to just say yes to more things. Accept that coffee invitation from your coworker even if it seems awkward. Sign up for that free class at the library that you're not sure you'll like. Join that club. Book that tour. Say yes to as many things as you can and kill the part of your brain that gut-reacts with a no.
i store all the witchy things i find here
