I’ve been around for a really long time in various fandoms, and no one ever writes this stuff down. I’ll start. Please add to the list. We can’t expect people to follow “rules” they don’t know exist.

Fanart

if you like something, reblog it. Help the artist get their work out there in front of more people. Share the joy that it brought you. 

if you want more of it, support it. This can be via commissions, reblogs, recommending the artist to other people, shouting in the tags, or sending the artist asks/messages. 

if you hate it, keep scrolling. Keep the hate in a message window with a friend, not in the artist’s notes. 

if you want to use it, ask permission. Artwork is beautiful and you want to show it off. But please ask the artist before you throw it into your header or your icon. 

if you use it, give credit. And not just a post where you say “Do you like my new icon? X made it!”. Put it in your blog description, that way when someone rolls around your blog three months from now, they also know where your icon/header came from.

if you like something, reblog it. Help the author get their work out there in front of more people. Share the joy that it brought you.

if you want more of it, support it. Kudos are fine, but if you want more of the thing you like, you should comment. Subscribe to the story or the author. Send them a message about how much you like what they wrote. 

if you read it, kudos it. Or give it a thumbs up. And this is just if you managed to get all the way to the end. If you finished the story and you actually liked it? Comment and reblog. 

don’t demand content. Be patient. Stories take time. You can encourage without being demanding. Show your love for what’s there without telling them to post more often. 

be gentle with criticism. Some people want it and some people run away from it. If you don’t know what type of person the author is, it’s best not to go there. “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.”

ship and let ship. You love your ship and other people love theirs. No one needs to “win” when we’re all going to end up in tears anyway. 

if you hate it, stay out of the tag. This has two meanings: 1) don’t deliberately put hateful commentary in a tag and 2) if you  hate a tag, don’t go and read through that tag just to make yourself angry

if someone makes you something, appreciate it. Read and comment the fic. Like and reblog the artwork. Pimp it out and tell them how much you loved it. It’s a gift, treat it like one. 

if it’s a gift, put some effort into it. You signed up for that exchange three months ago and now it’s a week before you have to send the gift and you don’t have the time or the inclination to do the thing. Well too bad. Someone out there has been working hard in your gift, so you should do the same for them. 

none of us are “better” than anyone else. We’re all trash for our particular show/film/book/ship/artist/what-have-you. My fave is no better than yours and yours is no better than mine. 

actors are not their characters. They are people. Treat them like people. 

Minneapolis Police Killed Another Innocent Black Man: Winston Smith

I havent seen any posts about this on tumblr yet, and it seems like local MN tweets aren't reaching as wide an audience as usual, so here I am.

Winston Smith was murdered by MPD in broad daylight on June 3rd, 2021 around 2PM in Uptown, Minneapolis. MPD claimed that they were pursuing a "felon with a gun"/"murder suspect" to try to cover up the shooting. They then claimed that there was no bodycam or dashcam footage of the pursuit. Below are headlines from the Star Tribune, which broadcasted directly what MPD told them to.

It is believed that Smith may have been targeted and murdered by MPD due to his radical protesting beliefs and involvment in the Minneapolis protesting scene. I encourage to watch the video he himself made and posted.

Mayor Jacob Frey has only allowed the situation to escalate by deploying more MPD to south Minneapolis. MPD has already injured a civilian for trying to bring food to protesters who have been holding down the streets of Uptown, near where Smith was killed.

And this was all done while the city was forcefully opening George Floyd Square. They removed barricades, violated the memorials, and are attempting to allow traffic to flow back on 38th and Chicago. This was all on the same day. Mayor Frey has no respect for his constituents. This community is in mourning.

Genuinely, I thank y'all from the bottom of my heart. Fanfic is my mind palace- even the sad ones that make me bawl my eyes out, help. Love you guys and your effort and talent💖

This will probably go unnoticed, but I just want to take a second to give a big thank you to all the fanfic authors out there.

I'm not sure if y'all are aware of how much of an impact you're making on peoples lifes.

Personally I struggle with a lot of things that I won't specify here, but fanfic is something I can escape to, even on the worst days.

So if any fanfic writers see this, this is a personal thank you note from me to you.

So for years black girls have had to read fanfics where y/n was automatically described as being paled skinned with long flowing hair and blue eyes. We couldn’t relate to it exactly, it excluded us, it ignored us. But we read it cause it was all that was out there. Now when we start writing fanfics for other black girls to feel included and represented, now you all are saying that you ‘‘can’t relate to it” therefore don’t support black writers when we were supporting your work all those years even though you were acting like we don’t exist within these fandoms.

THESE types of posts really need to stop being made or spread. I have OCD and these are a massive trigger, because I physically cannot ignore them. I thought it was just a me thing for a while but then I posted a rant on my story on Instagram and so many other people with OCD (or even without) feel the same, and on top of that they just clog peoples feeds.

And it’s not not just the ones with consequences. Even the ones with rewards trigger it, because my brain automatically fills in the consequence.

This is becoming a serious issue and it’s really been affecting mine and others mental health. I don’t know if this will get anywhere but I’m trying to spread the message in the hopes that people understand.

The night of November 5 the Sula valley was severely flooded by the overflows of various rivers, there are approximately 4 cities completely underwater and numerous small villages i can't even count. Even the airport of my city San Pedro Sula is underwater. Aproximately 300,000 families lost everything they had, there are hundreds of people going missing, our social medias are flooded with posts of people desperately searching for their family members since communication has been lost due to the floods and lanslides on roads. And almost 200 people have been found dead including drowned kids. Our indigenous people have lost all of their crops they live of. They have nothing left and up to this day there's still people trapped in the roofs of their homes waiting to be rescued. The government has abandoned us ever since covid came into our country. And literally we have no one, it's only us helping each other with what we have. Hundreds of hondurans have shown their golden heart by providing shelter to those who have nowhere to go and lost everything, you have no idea how much i've cried seeing how with the little we have, we've tried to help the most. This is a third world contry, victims of a narco state and a corrupted government, we have gone through so much, fought for too long for the justice we have never gotten. So please, spread awareness, i beg you to do so.

Learning about this case made me sick, though what I'm feeling could never compare to what Aiyana Jones' family and friends felt. Its disgusting how people can get away with killing innocent black people, fucking. CONSTANTLY. I've had a family member of mine try to remind me repeatedly, that "all lives matter". That statement could never- will never- be true until black lives matter. People need to get their fat heads out of their ass's and look at our reality. Its sad, the fact that this has been going on for forever.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on my dash tonight about users who are threatening suicide, with other Tumblr members posting in effort to try to get ahold of them. I think you all should see this:

IF THERE IS EVER A TUMBLR USER WHO HAS POSTED A GOOD-BYE MESSAGE, SUICIDE NOTE, VIDEO, OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS POST.

1. Scroll to the top of your dashboard.

2. See the circular question mark icon at the top? It’s the third one over from your home symbol. Click on that, and a screen similar to the one in the picture will come up.

3. Where you can type in questions, the box with the magnifying glass at the top, type in the word “suicide.”

4. Click on the first link that shows up. It should say, “Pass the URL of the blog on to us.”

5. Type in the user’s URL and tell Tumblr admin that the user is contemplating suicide and has posted a message indicating that they are going through with it or will be attempting. Hit send! Tumblr administration will perform a number of actions to contact the user and take the necessary steps to prevent the suicide.

TUMBLR: THIS COULD SAVE A USER’S LIFE. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE SUICIDE THREATS.
