10 Things for 10 People You’d Like to Know Better!

Tagged by @groovebunker <3

• last song: Origami by Totemo

• last book: I just finished Conflict is Not Abuse, by Sarah Schulman, and I really liked it. It gave me a lot to think about.

• last movie: Gosh, I really can't remember. I think it may have been The Breaker Upperers, which I liked very much. It was a while ago.

• last TV show: Severance. I'm on S1E1, no spoilers pls :-*

• favourite colour: It's all about context, for me -- the same color in one setting can be flat and boring, or grating, and in another setting can look so alive and lovely. I love that gorgeous dark cerulean that the other half of the sky turns, when the sun is setting on a clear night. Or I love neon red things on a bright overcast day; I love how they glow.

• sweet/savory/spicy: Savory. Give me all the mushrooms and seaweeds and seeds and nuts.

• relationship status: 100% single right now, and really into that.

• last thing I googled: Boston Public library reading room, on image search.

• current obsession: My country is struggling and I'm trying to figure out what else I could be doing to slow down the coup, take care of my people and move things in a better direction.

• looking forward to: Springtime is starting here and it feels really special. It's such a treat, to see the flowers start to bloom. I love the way the air smells and feels.

Join in if you want @vaguemylk @chainofclovers @toomanygh0sts @so-i-did-this-thing @disasterbiwriter...and also whoever else feels like it <3

I slow blink at people all the time. My roommate's dog has come to understand what it means and now sometimes does it back to me. So I guess I accidentally taught a dog how to speak cat, or one word of it anyway.

I haven't meowed at anyone, but I have reflexively hissed at people. Also, during the years when I was living with just my cat, and not getting a huge amount of interaction with other humans, I would occasionally slow blink at people instead of smiling 😻

I still slow blink at people to indicate friendliness and I no longer have an excuse.

It’s never been negatively received but on some occasions cat savvy people have paused before demanding, “Did you just slow blink at me??”

Oh my god. I finally realized what this reminds me of. It's opera.

There’s something uniquely perverse about cruelty performed by people who will never experience the consequences of their own ideology. Unlike the Somali pirates or the Taliban—groups operating in extreme conditions, driven by survival, ideology, or desperation—the architects of modern American cruelty live in comfort. They do not suffer. They are not struggling for food or security. And yet, they choose cruelty, not as a necessity, but as a luxury. This is performative suffering, an aesthetic of toughness projected by people who have never known real hardship. It’s the lawmakers who gut welfare programs while vacationing in gated resorts. It’s the TV pundits who sneer at working-class struggles from air-conditioned studios. It’s bureaucrats who deny migrants soap and toothpaste—not out of logistical necessity, but because cruelty itself is a flex, a demonstration of power detached from material reality. It has no greater purpose beyond LOOKING ruthless. It is the political equivalent of posing in tactical gear without ever seeing combat, of calling for war from the safety of a country club. It is not the brutality of warriors or the desperation of insurgents. It is the decadence of empire—violence for the sake of self-image, cruelty as a luxury good.

Bro absolutely COOKED with this.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Tonight is the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, a time for new beginnings. The moon plays an important role in our world’s ocean—from controlling the tides, to playing conductor in the orchestra of marine life cycles.

Closeup of the white translucent moon jelly highlights its delicate frilly tentacles against a dark broody background

Moon jellies—named simply for their lunar satel-likeness—are delightfully drifting reminders of our nearest sea-lestial body. We hope that tonight you can find time to reflect in the shadow of the new moon and shellebrate new beginnings.

Wishing you a year of prosperity! ♥️ 🌑 🧧

[Video description: an overhead shot of a reddish-brown millipede walking. It is dawn or sunset and the daylight hits the millipede at a low angle and projects a relatively long shadow, for such a small creature. The millipede's legs are not visible from above but from the shadow we can see that the millipede isn't merely walking, but prancing and skipping. Its movement has an up-and-down, playful quality; it's not hurrying but it's moving with a distinct pizzazz and panache. Video is captioned Shadow of a millipede walking. /End video description.]

If you persevere, in time you will have an entirely different problem – not that life is meaningless, but rather that life has almost too much meaning. As the scales fall from your eyes the world rushes into focus, presenting itself with a kind of vibrational eloquence that can, at first, be almost overwhelming. Everything shimmers, everything clarifies, everything wrestles for your attention. Trees feel super-real, their roots plunged into the earth, their branches stretching to the sky, birds are flesh and blood souls, fragile with life, the sky unfolds and rolls, the ocean crashes, people fascinate, books are beautiful, children are whirling dynamos of chaos, dogs bark and cats meow, flowers shout, your neighbour glows, and God runs like a helix through all things. The world awaits you, humming with meaning. You are alive with potential. You are not dead.

— Nick Cave on getting clean, Red Hand Files #258
