my mother taught me to crochet when i was young. she was left handed, so she taught me how in the bathroom mirror so her hands would be in the right position.

she learned to crochet from her grandmother, who was right handed. her grandma was the one that originally used the bathroom mirror to teach her granddaughter properly.

i find something poetic about that. here in this bathroom mirror, through generations, we adapt to our young who have a different way of learning and interacting with the world

front page of a zine called 'Tips for defying the end of the world (from people who were right before)'. there's doodles of speech bubbles and lightning bolts
In 2000 (when I was 8), I heard about 2012. [caps lock with lightning bolts around it] THE END OF THE WORLD. [end caps lock]. I curled up by the radiator and I sobbed. What was the point? why go to school if I was gonna die at 20 anyway? But my mum came in and said, [text in a speech bubble next to a picture of me in the corner, curled up by the radiator.], "But what if the world doesn't end? What if you live? Then, if you quit now, you'll have to catch up". [end speech bubble.] And I persisted. And I didn't die.
And when I was real depressed one time, I told my doctor how overwhelming it felt to try to fix all the world's problems when I'm just one person. Activist burnout. And he said, [text in a speech bubble next to a picture of my doctor speaking to me], You ARE just one person. So you can't fix it all. But you can pick small things in your small radius, and start working on the small wins instead. [end speech bubble]. And he was right. I've done so much more with less stress since then.
And now, I look after some folk who are younger than me. They also fear the future. They fear politicians, and they fear hatred, and they fear climate change. They're burnt out.
But what if it works out? What if small changes today make tomorrow better?
Hope is a tool. Hope is a weapon. Hope is a plant we must nurture.
[There's a plant drawn dividing the page]
Even if things go wrong, we can at least say we tried. But we hope for more. Because if we can picture it, we can work towards it.

[Image description: text reading, All the best things in life require a degree of embarrassment, or at least the possibility of it. Dancing, singing, sharing art, cooking food, having sex, holding hands; there is risk in it all. You could burn dinner or sing off key; no act of self expression or love is exempt from this danger /End image description.]

[Image description: text reading, Lovely video. I have a little personal anecdote that slots surprisingly neatly into the themes of this video.

71 years ago, my grandfather took a cycling trip around the perimeter of France with a friend. He kept a diary, meticulously documenting the events of almost every day. Last month, my brothers and I embarked on the same journey, following in his footsteps. I'd avoided reading the diary beforehand, so every day I'd read about his experience at the same time that I had them myself: the places he'd visited, the food he'd eaten, the people he'd found, and at the same time we'd see the same sights. Some days we were ahead of him, some behind.

After a few days, I realised that something very surprising was happening. 71 years later, and 40 years after the death of this man we never knew, we stopped talking about him in the past tense. It took me a while to notice it, but it slowly became more obvious. We'd say things like "he's just 10 kilometres ahead of us now" or "he's over there as he's taking that photo". Seven decades, suddenly erased - an experience that felt almost out of time - and in those few days he felt closer and more alive than he ever had before. It was a strange experience, and something I doubt I shall ever have again. End image description.]

Oh my god. I finally realized what this reminds me of. It's opera.

There’s something uniquely perverse about cruelty performed by people who will never experience the consequences of their own ideology. Unlike the Somali pirates or the Taliban—groups operating in extreme conditions, driven by survival, ideology, or desperation—the architects of modern American cruelty live in comfort. They do not suffer. They are not struggling for food or security. And yet, they choose cruelty, not as a necessity, but as a luxury. This is performative suffering, an aesthetic of toughness projected by people who have never known real hardship. It’s the lawmakers who gut welfare programs while vacationing in gated resorts. It’s the TV pundits who sneer at working-class struggles from air-conditioned studios. It’s bureaucrats who deny migrants soap and toothpaste—not out of logistical necessity, but because cruelty itself is a flex, a demonstration of power detached from material reality. It has no greater purpose beyond LOOKING ruthless. It is the political equivalent of posing in tactical gear without ever seeing combat, of calling for war from the safety of a country club. It is not the brutality of warriors or the desperation of insurgents. It is the decadence of empire—violence for the sake of self-image, cruelty as a luxury good.

Bro absolutely COOKED with this.
