Do you have any tutorials for painting with gouache? I really want to learn some techniques!

I did this process post on my gouache techniques a little while ago. It's a really fun medium but it can be tricky when you're first learning it. The biggest issue folks seem to have is that, since it's water soluble, you really can't work back into it too much, at least not at all like you would with acryllic. I tend to work very graphically with gouache so laying down flat areas of color next to flat areas of color suits me as much as does the medium. You can layer over it, it just takes a bit of practice until you nail your preference for applying your paint down.

Other tips! I find inking brushes work very nicely (I like Winsor & Newton 222 Cotman). Stonehenge brand paper has a great tooth for painting with gouache. Look for a yogurt-like consistency when you're loading your brush with paint. And, I always tell the students I do demos for this, but - for serious inspiration, if you want to see an artist who really kills at gouache and in a little more painterly style, check out Israel Sanchez (his work is fantastic).

Good luck! Have fun!

Hi Andrea, I was in Greg's Monday class this past semester and I found your Tumblr by chance. I didn't know you had graduated MICA already, I assumed you were still a student because you were Greg's TA. It's so cool that you've done illustrations for NY Times! How did you get such a big client like that? I guess I'm just kinda gushing now. I guess I'll leave this message by saying I really admire your work =]

Hey miss ma'am! Haha I'm...glad? you thought I was a student. But no, that youthful glow and non-jaded outlook on the bitterness of life left me when I graduated MICA....Counterpoint: did I mention how I think Sailor Moon is super fun? And did you see? Kali turned me into a sailor scout! wee!

Anyhow, I actually got contacted by the NY Times rather than the other way around, which was (is) a hugely exciting thing, but probably not to be relied on as a typical occurrence. My best recommendation is to do what I do too little of and promote yourself as much as you can. Be friendly, make contacts, and send your promos out to all the people you want to work with. But most importantly, just keep making work, even if it's just for you. Try not to get seduced by trends, always aim for making yourself proud, and put some soul into your work (by loving what you do)! You never know who'll notice you.

Thanks so much, Shirley! Best of luck!!

I Had The Opportunity To Work With Meg Mateo Ilasco At Anthology Magazine Recently For Their 2013 Winter

I had the opportunity to work with Meg Mateo Ilasco at Anthology Magazine recently for their 2013 Winter and Spring issues. Here's my illustration for their seasonal Screen Play article and a map (which I rarely get the chance to do!) for their feature on Oakland. These were both uniquely-proportioned layouts and so this was a fun exercise. Anthology is a beautifully designed and curated magazine, so if you haven't already, definitely check it out!

EDIT: I'd credited Anh-Minh Le as my art director initially, whereas Anh-Minh is the editor of Anthology. My mistake!

Nobrow 6

Nobrow 6

Nobrow 6, The Double is available for preorder! The big reveal feels pretty good.

My piece entails an unwelcome invasion into a private bucolic garden. I was psyched to be included in this dauntingly great lineup of artistic talent. The book features work by Luke Pearson, Chuck Groenink, John Martz, Tom Gauld, Niv Bavarsky, Nick Iluzada and tons more, and has a good chunk of comics in this issue as well. Thanks very much to Alex Spiro for extending an invitation my way.

Get your hands on it!

here are a couple details if you'd like to take a look:

Reblogging my own post because GOBLIN. THE GOBLIN. IS IN BALTIMORE. TOnight. And I'm gonna see them and wear my own dumb shirt and it's gonna be the strangest, most rad time, and everyone? go ahead. be jealous.

"Suzy, Do You Know Anything About…witches?"

"Suzy, do you know anything about…witches?"

Suspiria, a masterpiece by Dario Argento. This trippy, amazingly surreal horror film is the subject of my newest tshirt design for Pizza Party Printing's upcoming movie night at the Ottobar. They'll be showing not only Suspiria, but the 1989 horror, The Church (paired with a fucking metal shirt by Jimmy Giegerich), so if you’re in Baltimore at the end of the month, be there! Immerse yourself in blood and beer (and the music of the one, the only Goblin). It’s gonna be spooky.

The Suspiria shirt is up for sale now at Pizza Party! Pick one up while you can!

My lovely friend Kelly Lasserre's handwritten type is so good and so enviable!  There's something really sweet and silly about this that I adore, and all the painted objects she's been creating just make me so happy.
