A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA March 13 – July 4, 2016

A Japanese Constellation focuses on the network of architects and designers that has developed around Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and SANAA. Providing an overview of Ito’s career and his influence as a mentor to a new generation of Japanese architects, the exhibition presents recent works by internationally acclaimed designers, including Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata, and Junya Ishigami. Departing from one of Ito’s pivotal works, the Sendai Mediatheque, completed in 2001, as well as SANAA’s 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2004), the 44 featured designs range in scale from small houses to museums. Organized through intersecting spaces separated by translucent curtains, drawings, models, and images reveal the structural invention, non-hierarchical thinking, and novel uses of transparency and lightness that link these practices. Exploring a lineage of influence and cross-pollination that has become particularly relevant at the start of the 21st century, the exhibition highlights the global impact and innovation of contemporary architecture from Japan since the 1990s. With its idea of a network of luminaries at work, A Japanese Constellation is intended as a reflection on the transmission of an architectural sensibility, and suggests an alternative model to what has been commonly described as an individuality-based “star-system” in contemporary architecture.

Utrecht University Library Wiel Arets Architects

The Utrecht University Library, established in 1636, is located on the Uithof campus, situated a short distance from the city center. It is comprised of the library itself and an adjacent parking garage with multiple voids–between which is a courtyard garden and a café named for ‪Johannes Gutenberg‬–and the fenestration of both is fritted with an abstracted image of fossilized papyrus. The relief of this image is imprinted on concrete panels, which are equal in size to the fritted glass panels; together they compose the building’s façade, and the concrete panels return within the interior.

IT HOUSE

The IT HOUSE Component Package combines materials and technology that are visually compatible and clip together with simple details. As the elements of the house are components they are extremely pliable and can create a wide range of floor plans to suit any site and client.

The essential components of the IT HOUSE are the flexible aluminum frame, both for structure and wall framing, an acoustical steel deck roof, aluminum framed glazing system primarily consisting of large sliding doors, panelized enclosure system, and built in cabinetry. The framing system can be used to easily create fully or lightly enclosed spaces, exterior courtyards or screened in porches.

The IT HOUSE can be completely off-grid, generating its own heating and energy reinforcing the goal of achieving a minimal building footprint. Energy efficiency is achieved in the IT House through passive heating and cooling, utilizing site orientation and cross ventilation, radiant floor heating, hi-efficacy appliances & equipment and the use of solar photovoltaic & thermal panels.
