Send my muse lies about people they care for.

When they brought her back to the interrogation room she was confused. She didnât think that Moody would need anything else from her, but maybe he did. Or maybe he was here to tell her that he tried, but that he couldnât get her out without giving himself up. That was something that sheâd have understood. She wasnât worth anything, not really, not in the long run. Her contributions to ending the war would be minimal if he managed to get her out. She could heal, sure. She was a great dueler. But there were other duelers. There were others who could manage basic healing spells. She was nothing, but Moody was crucial. He couldnât give himself up, or even hint at any sort of suspicion. Not the kind that could have him in a cell next to hers. Maybe that was why he was coming back. Maybe he was coming to tell her goodbye and good luck. Sheâd understand.
But when she walked in and saw Alice she was confused. The interrogation rooms were freezing, but they were so much warmer than the cells, out of the reach of the effects of the dementors. She could think clearer the second she crossed into the room, and clearer still as the heavy metal door closed shut behind them. When she wrapped her arms around her Dorcas didnât react, not at first. Alice was soft and warm and comforting â but did she deserve that?  How was she meant to accept her comfort after everything. Why was she even here? She should be with her baby.
But after a few moments she responded, lightly wrapping her trembling arms around her.  âIâm okay,â she said softly, her expression blank, her voice a hoarse whisper. Â
...
Alice squeezed hard, despite the fact that Dorcas remained limp in her arms for far too long. When she finally did reciprocate the hug, it was weak. Pulling back, Alice looked into Dorcasâ eyes, worried about what she saw there. She knew very well what the dementors did to people, had experienced it plenty of times herself when she had to come here for Auror duties, but she had never been through it like Dorcas was right now. It had been six long days that Dorcas had been stuck in here, forced to relive her worst fears and memories on a constant loop -- it was no wonder that her eyes looked deadened. Alice waved her wand to cast an extra warming charm and transfigured one of the chairs into a blanket, wrapping it around Dorcasâ shoulders. âNo, youâre not okay,â she replied softly, her voice filled with understanding.Â
Alice sighed. âIâm not really involved in the case, so I donât really have any updates for you except that Moodyâs working hard and heâs determined to get you out of here. It was probably a major stretch even to come here, but I had to see you. I couldnât stand the thought of you alone in here after everything.â Her eyes filled with tears, but she blinked them back, cursing the postpartum hormones. Dorcas didnât need to see Alice cry. âThey donât have a case against you, not unless they want to take Rodolphus down too, and we know thatâs not going to happen.âÂ
She reached out to touch Dorcasâ arm, wanting her to feel human warmth and contact for at least just a little while. âI brought you something, too.â Reaching into the pocket of her robes, Alice pulled out a picture. It had been taken in happier times, at an Order meeting. In the picture were Fabian and Gideon, their arms slung around Paulie, Fabian laughing as Gideon mussed up her hair. âItâs a little risky, but I donât think the dementors will notice that you have it, and I wanted you to have something to remind you of who you have out there waiting for you.â

Where: We all know where Who: @alicelxngbottomâ
With hands in his pockets, Evan wandered the main room under the request of Greta that he spend some time interacting with the friends and family she knew heâd have at the party. Normally one would take it as a bad sign that their date had been so intent on getting rid of them, but theyâd only come as friends and he knew Greta had only good intentions on the matter. She was big on family and friends, of course, she wouldnât want to be the cause of him missing out by standing by her side all night.
Heâd almost called it quits on the rounds he was making around the party, figured heâd been gone long enough, made enough conversation to please Greta on his return. However, his plans immediately changed when he spotted a familiar figure, albeit a bit bigger than when heâd last saw her, but his cousin was pregnant that was part of the whole deal.âNot even late pregnancy can keep you from the duty of showing up to a Pureblood party, huh?â Â He asked, approaching not to think if sheâd recognize him with a mask or not, after all, heâd been able to pick her out.
...
Alice was just beginning to eye the tables on the far end of the ballroom, thinking about giving a rest to her aching feet, when a familiar voice floated towards her. Turning to find the source, her face broke into a wide smile as her eyes landed on her cousin Evan. He may have been wearing a mask, but she would recognize him anywhere. Of all the cousins on her fatherâs side of the family, Evan was probably her favorite. Andromeda was beginning to grow on her too, and Annalise was always amusing to be around, but none of them had the easy charm and cheer that Evan seemed to possess, a remarkable feat considering how harsh her uncle always acted towards his only son.
Alice laughed, shaking her head. âWell, ten years is a lot to celebrate,â she pointed out, motioning toward where their cousin Bellatrix stood across the room. âBesides, you know as well as I do that if any of us happened to miss this, Aunt Druella would bring it up in the most passive aggressive way possible for the next ten years.â Taking a slight step back, she gave him a quick once-over, smiling. âNow you look quite dashing tonight, Evan. Do you have a date you need to get back to, or can you keep your old pregnant cousin some company? I was just about to find a place to sit down and rest my swollen feet.â

âYouâre of plenty use,â she said softly. It never sat well with her when people downplayed their strength or usefulness, and although Alice didnât necessarily need a self-esteem boost, she still deserved to know that she could be an important asset and pregnant at the same time.  âNearly no one else has the same access you do. Iâm a halfblood, you know? Iâve been working at this for nearly a year now and the trust is still only minimal. Enough that I overhear important things, but not enough that Iâm told them, anyway. Youâll be a good asset down here while I try to run interference where I can.â
When she started all of this she would never have had such a frank conversation in a room full of people, but she had quickly learned that no one expected a secret conversation to be held in a room full of people â but the background noise made eavesdropping more difficult.  âI donât like when things are out of my control,â she admitted.  âIâm good at this, I get why this is my mission, but it makes me nervous when others, who are less used to their tactics, have to put themselves at risk. But it should all be fine. Itâs â itâs fairly simple.â
...
Alice listened intently to what Dorcas was saying, appreciating that the younger witch considered her useful despite how far along she was in her pregnancy. Giving her a sympathetic frown, Alice glanced over to where Bellatrix and Rodolphus were greeting guests. âYouâre doing a great job,â she murmured, looking back at Dorcas. âIt takes time to do what youâre doing, to gain the kind of trust weâre after. And I may be a pureblood, but my cousin knows me well enough to suspect my allegiances, so Iâm fairly certain I only received an invitation because of my maiden name.â She laughed. âStill, Iâm glad to be here, and Iâll do what I can to protect our people and eavesdrop for any useful information.â
Alice sighed, nodding her agreement at Marleneâs statement. She felt the same way every time she watched a young Order member go into battle or on a mission. They were eager and skilled, of course, but until you had seen as much of this war as people like Alice and Moody and Dorcas had, there was a certain naivetĂ© that always put you at risk. âI know,â she said softly, thinking of all the people here tonight that she would have preferred to keep home. âPaulie and Lily really shouldnât be here, but Moody wanted to let anyone who volunteered come. Personally, Iâm not sure this mission is really worth the risk.â Alice looked into Dorcasâ eyes. âHave you heard anything so far?â
