This Time For Sure (2025)

"you can draw whatever you want, as long as you are not hurting yourself or other people."
stick figure says, "what the fuck does that mean? what if i AM hurting myself? what if i AM hurting other p--" they are interrupted by a giant centipede attacking them.
later, bandaged, figure says: "if i draw the things my mind was actually constantly begging me to draw, it would be a lot of stick figures committing suicide. i have no idea why. i'm not even suicidal"

a graph describes "artistic subject matter per year". from 2015 to 2018, the artist draws lots of meaningless and juvenile art. from 2023 onward, the artist almost never draws and it's still mostly meaningless.

a chicken fills the rest of the space to discourage the artist from drawing stick figures committing suicide.

i tried to turn this page into something honest, but the task felt impenetrable. the only thing that would come through, coherently, consistently: "i would rather be dead than childish". why?

rewinding back to 2016, the figure says, "wow, i actually survived the new years. oh well." faded: "this time for sure".

at the bottom, the lyrics to Los Campesinos! - The Sea Is a Good Place to Think of the Future:

"And all you can hear
Is the sound of your own heart
And all you can feel
Is your lungs flood, and your blood course
But, oh, I can see
Five-hundred years dead set ahead of me

just saw the viral video of an East-Asian Australian influencer being ✨shocked✨ that the Aboriginal man she's interviewing on the street doesn't feel "national pride" and the comments are FULL of anti-Black, anti-Aboriginal racism. you really cannot talk about any form of racism in so-called australia without acknowledging that the white supremacist infrastructure of the nation was built on the attempted genocide and continued disenfranchisement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (Blakfellas). the model minority myth in Australia infers a racial hierarchy in which Blakfellas are always at the bottom. i really wish more marginalised Australians, including non-Indigenous Australians of colour, were more willing to acknowledge their settler privilege. I wish they had more empathy and compassion for Blakfellas and understood that their struggles will not go away without solidarity with Blak people because EVERY form of institutionalised racism (like the White Australia Policy) was and is built quite literally on the mass graves of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. and for the record we cannot have pride for a nation built to kill us.
