VPNs do not make you more secure

here's how they work!

first of all, most of your internet traffic is already encrypted via TLS (Transport Layer Security). Things that aren't encrypted are usually videogames or less important applications.

a VPN encrypts traffic between your computer and the VPN server you're using.

your Internet Service Provider (ISP) sits in the middle of that transaction.

cue the MS paint diagram

Without a VPN:

VPNs Do Not Make You More Secure

With a VPN:

VPNs Do Not Make You More Secure

the traffic between your VPN server and the rest of the internet is not encrypted any further.

things that VPNs are good for:

bypassing geo-blocking

bypassing website blocks set up by your ISP

obscuring network traffic from your ISP

things that VPNs are not good for:

browsing the internet without having your activity logged. every company that gives internet service logs the activity, it's half of how they make sure they're not being hacked.

hiding information from the government. VPN providers WILL bend to subpoenas, they WILL turn over logs of your network activity.

cybersecurity. VPNs can't save you once the traffic is between them and the final destination. they don't analyze your traffic to detect and stop hackers, they don't add any encryption where it matters.

VPNs are not a shortcut to security. you cannot pay 15 dollars a month to forgo all responsibility for your own digital privacy. do your research, use a password manager, stay safe.

my friends i hope you find this information useful. you have been sold a lie. remember to show extreme skepticism to youtube sponsorships and journalism websites which sing their praises.

sources: i have a certificate iv in cybersecurity

It is with the deepest frustrations that I must report Microsoft has pushed out Copilot onto Microsoft Word no matter what your previous settings were. If you have Office because you paid for it/are on a family plan/have a work/school account, you can disable it by going to Options -> click on Copilot -> uncheck 'Enable Copilot'.

(Note, you may not see this option if you haven't updated lately, but Copilot will still pop up. Updating should give you this option. I will kill Microsoft with my bare hands.)

In addition, Google has forced a roll-out of it's Gemini AI on all American accounts of users over 18 (these settings are turned off by default for EU, Japan, Switzerland, and UK, but it doesn't hurt to check).

To remove this garbage, you must go to Manage Workspace smart feature settings for all your Gmail/Drive/Chat and turn them off. Go to Settings -> See all settings -> find under "Genera" the "Google Workspace smart features" -> turn smart feature setting off for both Google Workspace and all other Google products and hit save. (If you turned off the smart settings in your Gmail, it never hurts to open Drive and double-check that they're set to off there too.)

Quick Edit: I found the easiest way to get to the Smart Feature settings following the instructions above was to do it through Drive. Try that route first.

Now is the time to consider switching to Libre Office if you haven't already.

psst, tumblr just quietly rolled out collaboration with ai training models, and it's opt-out, not opt-in, go into your blog settings to fix it [on desktop, anyway, dunno where you'd look on mobile] keep fighting the good fight <3

I don't see an option for it now, so it may not have rolled out for everyone yet? Unless I'm just missing where it is

Because I've seen you discuss nutrition & basic life skills: do you know of any trustworthy websites/resources that teach food safety? I learned all my cooking info from my mom, but she doesn't believe food poisoning is real, so tldr I've realized that some things that I learned/do are unsafe. (Eating disorder cw) I have tried to find online resources but searching for food safety has led me to some psychologically unsafe results, hence asking a person instead. (1/2)

(2/2) thank you if you can help, and no worries if you can't; either way, thank you for all of the advice that you have shared with all of us on here!

Okay so for good basic food safety you probably want to start with something simple, and the FDA has you covered!

This is the very, very basic introduction to major food safety concepts.

Here is some more in-depth information about food safety in the home kitchen.

Here is food safety information for young adults who might be doing most of their food shopping and cooking on their own for the first time.

Here is a more in-depth selection of food safety topics.

If you're interested in getting a better handle on this stuff, you might want to consider taking a food handler certification course online. In many US states you have to pass a food handler certification course in order to work in restaurants, so there are good, comprehensive online courses and assessments available at a fairly low cost ($15). ServSafe is one of the major companies that offers these courses.

Here's a basic video on food safety:

There are actually many kinds of food-borne illnesses that we call "food poisoning." It sounds like it's difficult to deal with someone who doesn't think it's real, but that's a more common attitude than you might think.

If you'd like to learn more about food poisoning, here's a video about how the FDA tracks outbreaks of food-borne illness:

And here's a video for doctors discussing how to handle and recognize food-borne illnesses:

Anyway I'm glad you like the blog, and you have correctly guessed that I am PRETTY SERIOUS about food safety, so I'm glad I could share some resources about it! I hope this helps!

IF YOU’RE READING THIS I NEED YOU to go to neocities.org and make an account.

It’s an emergency. Look. People are really getting into it now. Do you want to be the last kid on your block still depending on corporate social media for your self-actualization?
